Thanks Nick for doing my request! I thought you might really like this one! Both Jimmy and Ian are the main vocalists and the other three are backing vocalists but both Steve and Don have taken the lead vocals on a handful of songs. You are 100% correct that the different vocal styles of Jimmy and Ian compliment each other so well and then backed by the song writing genius of Don Walker (keyboards in this video), make them truly one of the greatest bands of all time. Great reaction keep up the great work!
Take the song writing genius of Don and Ian, and don't forget the small fact that there is very few bands that every single member has written a hit song, and I believe they have all taken the lead singer role on those hits as well... It would be good to see a reaction of the top hit from every member, but unfortunately I can't afford to put the proposal forward.
I just went to see Ian Moss in concert 21st October 😃😎 he is 68 now and he's still amazing! Voice is just as good and his skills in the guitar are legendary. Just love Ian Moss 🤗🤗🤗🌏🪐🌕🙏🍀🌸🇦🇺🐝🌷🦉🏡🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Don Walker the keyboard player wrote this song about his daughter. Cold chisel will always be my favourite Aussie band because aside from their awesome musicianship skills, I love the stories they tell that are so relatable and emotive.
Nick - Don Walker on keyboards (who wrote the majority of Chisel's songs) and Phil Small on bass provided backup vocals. Cold Chisel is, was and always will be, Australia's greatest band. They hail from my hometown of Adelaide.
Haha I pissed my pants laughing when he said that, and in the early days Jimmy would have knocked your lips off your face if you looked at him wrong 👍😂😂🇦🇺🇦🇺
You'll find that as you listen to more of their songs, your favourite will keep changing - so many of them are great. Like others here, the live versions of One Long Day & Georgia are highly recommended.
Cold Chisel has just so many great sound but When Jimmy and Ian sing together it's another level and you still haven't done Bow River yet. You have a treat ahead for you.
@@ThatSingerReactions Someone suggested you won't find a good live version of Bow River. Not true. The version from those same Last Stand concerts is great.
“One of the most destructively powerful voices in history… His voice is that thunderous, it’s that powerful, it’s like a destruction, it’s like a hurricane, or a tornado, or an earthquake.”-ThatSingerReactions Dominic, you’re always such an astute observer. You’re right and what a fantastic description! I’ve been reading the Jimmy Barnes autobiography series (Working Class Boy, Working Class Man, Killing Time) and Jimmy states this is exactly what he wanted to be. He wanted to sing like and be like and have his band like a powerful, the most powerful destructive force of nature a band could possibly be. Jimmy suffered a destructive childhood and he was angry. He wanted to offend adults by being as loud and coarse as he possibly could. He wanted the band to spew anger and to be loud and to be destructive. He used to push the band to go faster and harder any way possible. He used to turn up Ian Moss’ amp and loud as he could when Ian wasn’t looking so the rest of the band was forced to turn up too. He used to goad Ian to go faster, he even used to jump on the backs of other band members to piss them off so they would go faster and harder. He wanted to whip the audience into a fury of energy any way he could. This pushing to and fro between Cold Chisel members is a major part of what made the energy of the band so powerful. The record producers tried to tame their sound down. This is why everyone says that their live performances were always so much more powerful than their recordings. This is why Cold Chisel fought with producers because they knew their appeal, they knew what their fans wanted. Cold Chisel did not want to be tamed. Once again, you’ve nailed it Dominic. You understand the essence of Cold Chisel and Jimmy Barnes. 🙂
The happiness in your face when you hear Barnesy and Mossy sing puts a smile on my face as well. If you ever listen to Mossy sing "Georgia" - especially the Barking Spiders version, you'll hear just how great a soul singer he is too. And if you are reading this - love your voice man, you got IT 🙏
Every Cold Chisel will be your favourite, just like every song has been for decades our favourite - Jimmy is awesome but "Mossy" is a legend in his own right 🇦🇺
They complimented each other so well, the Moss Barnes combination ruled my youth. Mossy is a brilliant artist in his own right, you need to check out more of his work
I love your take on this extraordinary Australian band mate! They were all very talented in singing, songwriting and musical ability. Most still are. RIP Steve Prestwich. Legend.
Hey! Jimmy's playing here in Adelaide tonight, down on Glenelg beach, at a festival by the sea. Also playing is Diesel, Jon Stevens, Mondo Rock and Vanessa Amerosi. I can't afford tickets, but will be hitting the beach further down to listen to Jimmy later!! Woohoo!!!!
100% agreed their vocals are the greatest I’ve heard in a rock group and yes they’re the main vocalist’s. This song gives me all the feels! Jimmy’s voice is primal.
Mossy's version of Georgia on my mind from 'the last stand' live 1983 you NEED to check this out just moss , don walker and mossys stratocaster, sublime
@ThatSingerReactions Thanks for introducing me to this Cold Chisel song Nick and too SAK230876 who 'requested' this :) BTW By 'Destructive' I think you mean he, "Tears it up!" Well, Tears it up, vocally. :)
All the other band members sang very good background vocals on a lot their songs, when you listen to "When the war is Over" you'll appreciate Cold Chisel as one of the best vocal bands in the world (apart from being great musicians too).
You are playing my youth! Written by Don Walker, the keyboardist and most prolific song writer of Chisel about his daughter Danielle. Loooove when Barnsey and Mossy do their duo thing - this band knows how to build a song to a crescendo and bring it home!
Absolutely brilliant song and performance. I've just spent 11 days in the Maldives were Mossy and several other Aussie singers performed is a series of sunset concerts on the beach. Mossy's performances were off the richter scale. And now Chisel are rehearsing for their Big Five O tour that kicks off next month. I've got tickets for six of the shows - I'll be in Chisel heaven.
Chisel plays every card in the pack. All five band members wrote songs - must have been some wild scenes as they made final choices for album track lineup. That diversity of writing alone puts them in a special place. And one of the five, Don Walker, knocked out poetic lyrics like he was writing grocery lists. Diversity... with five creative guys all writing, it's no surprise they moved through an array of styles: pub rock, blues, reggae, soul, rockabilly. Occasionally, out would come a radio-friendly pop tune. And how many of the select class of multi-writer bands had such a wealth of vocal talent to exploit? So often, they hit us with their patented one-two punch: Mossy opening the verse and chorus, Barnes filling in and harmonizing, then stepping forward for the bridge and unleashing his massive vocal power. The band knew they had a rare gift with these two fine but contrasting voices, and they wrote for this, played the drama for all it was worth. Jim Barnes can play the classic rock front man to perfection, but I love that he pulls it back and lets the band shine, lets Mossy shine, and just plays his part. So much better together.
Cold Chisel still playing together to this day, albeit only on occasion, but still sounding on top of their game LIVE! I took my kids with me to see them in February 2020, and nevertheless a new generation of Chisel fans were born ❤️❤️❤️
You know there's three things I love about vids like this.. A younger generation hearing and appreciating the music that defined mine. Realising how good the Aussie scene was. Getting to re live it. Great stuff mate.
Trivia for comment readers . If you watch interviews with Barnsey when Cold Chisel were on the way up, Jimmy spoke with an Aussie accent . Colin Hay from Men at Work did as well . Colin actually has mentioned in interviews which year he reverted to a Scottish accent. I thought perhaps when they were younger they wanted to fit in ,and when they got older wanted to stand out .
I love that you love this as much as we love it. Chisel is an institution in Oz. It was a right of passage for all males in the 70s/80s that they know all their songs well enough to sing them at the pub. You either loved Chisel, or you were unAustralian. Both artists are still touring (not together that often) and still sound amazing considering their age and previously life styles (especially Jim).
Great reaction Nick. This could be my new favourite too. Not sure if I’ve even heard this one before but I’ve definitely not heard it live. Astounding that these guys keep blowing you (and me) away. I think the whole band can sing and are all ridiculously talented musicians. As Simon says below Don Walker is a genius in his own right. He wrote a vast number of Cold Chisel’s discography. Many, many of them hits here in Australia and he wrote for other artists too. You should check out Tex, Don and Charlie

Ian Moss has the smoothest voice. Still does today! This is one of my favourite Cold Chisel song too Nick! Great reaction as usual. Peace... ✌
