    Hoagy Carmichael’s 1930 classic. A jazz standard covered by more people than you could poke a stick at. Most are sterile and even more fall miserably short of capturing the heart and soul of this song. Who would have thought two rock virtuosos from Oz would deliver this. Mossy with some help from Walker absolutely nail it. In my humble opinion the best cover on TH-cam.

    I'm 68 years old. I've been into rock all of my life. I can still remember being six years old, 1957; and hearing Elvis sing "Hound Dog" for the very first time. Comin' through the neighbors screen door in the tenement we lived in. Mesmerized! What I want to know, is why I never heard of Cold Chisel until now? I heard Jimmy sing Stone Cold on a Joe Bonamassa search and couldn't believe my ears! Absolutely incredible voice. What a band....

      @@roostersbays95 What a shame. I don't know much about the Australian story, apart from books and movies; no way to tell fiction from truth there. I remember a song from when I was a boy, about a "swagman" if I remember correctly. The intro was spoken by a man with a very thick accent. If I remember correctly there were all kinds of arcane references to things Australian. I loved to read, and had a very active imagination; that song really set me off. Words like digeree do, and "He sang as he watched and waited 'til his billie boiled..." couldn't get enough of it! Tell me about the "swagman", if you would. My grandmother lived through the great depression and would tell me stories about the "Hobos". They'd leave a mark on the door if you fed them, to let others know it was a safe place (no shotgun reception) to get a meal, or a days work, or whatever the story was. I could and did listen to her stories for hours. She'd make us both a cup of tea, and enchant me ...

    • @ajo3085
      @ajo3085 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ericellquist7007 The swagman was basically our version of the hobo, very active during the Great Depression. The song you mention is Waltzing Matilda and there are plenty of versions on youtube, but one in particular you might be interested in has an animated video that will show you what some of those strange words reference with a comment at the end about what our modern life might have done to that Billabong. (Check out "Waltzing Matilda - an Australian Animation" here on youtube).
      If you'd like to read more Australian books, google "50 Must Read Australian Novels (The Popular Vote) - Booktopia" and as far as music goes, Cold Chisel's main songwriter Don Walker and a wonderful singer/songwriter named Paul Kelly have probably captured various aspects of life in Australia better than most in their lyrics.

    Wow. Just wow. Thanks so much for having the wherewithal to pick up the camera that night 34 years ago. I'm like Simon below - as a 14 year old - this version got me addicted to guitars and in particular Strats. I spent many years transcribing and perfecting this version - the transcribing was easy - the touch dynamics, changes in volume and attack were what really took up the time. Ian is a phenomenal player and I had the life-highlight moment of meeting him a couple of years back. I still don't think he knows how much he's touched so many people - musos and punters alike - with this arrangement. It's flawless and still captivates those new to it til this day. \m/ Cheers!

    • @aflsteve9139
      @aflsteve9139 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@johnkershaw3125 Part of the reason for that was that prior to them reforming for the Last Wave of Summer, Mossy only sang a couple of songs during their gigs and most of the attention was focused on Barnsey. Hard as it is to believe now, I saw pub shows in '83 where he only sang lead on Bow River and maybe on one of the covers like Something is Wrong or Knocking on Heaven's Door. There were plenty of people around in that era who didn't realise that Cold Chisel even had a second singer and by the time he got Matchbook out, a lot of people didn't realise he'd been in Cold Chisel. It was really only as their music continued to grow while they were disbanded that his vocal work started to get the attention it deserved.

    • @ajo3085
      @ajo3085 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello again Jane, and yes, that was my link from Rebecca's page. Jimmy Barnes was the band's lead singer as you've probably worked out by now, but if you're specifically looking for Mossy's songs, he also sang lead on all or part of Rosaline, One Long Day, Plaza, My Baby (a hit), Never Before, Best Kept Lies, Bow River (a hit), Houndog, When The War Is Over (a hit), Saturday Night (a hit), Janelle, Build This Love, The Party's Over, Knocking on Heaven's Door and Let's Go Get Stoned from the band's initial 78-84 recording period. After they disbanded he recorded a number of solo albums and has also sung lead on many tracks since they released new material from the initial 1998 reformation onwards. One of my favourite of his vocals is This Time Round from The Last Wave of Summer album, yet another in the series of songs where Mossy kicked the vocals off then Jim came in and finished it off. Enjoy! Jo. :-)

      @@ajo3085 Thank you very much for all that information Jo. I did look at a few songs earlier and will search out more. They are a very interesting band aren't they? As fine as the performance of Georgia was, I could tell that with a guitarist like that, they'd be more of a rock band, but wow, the amount of different sounds in their music just in the handful of songs I watched is quite amazing. A couple of nice ballads, some really hard rockers, a long blues song and one that sounded like it almost had a reggae vibe to it. I will definitely watch more and probably buy some of their music. It's always a great surprise when you find music or a book or movie that has been around for a long time that you'd never stumbled across. Thank you again!

      @@janej3600 Glad to help Jane and really glad you are enjoying it. The variety in their music was a major part of the appeal. The first disk of their live album Swingshift is a great example. Conversations is a hard rock song, Shipping Steel is normally another rocker but this version has a much more laid back almost country rock feel to it. Breakfast at Sweethearts is the pseudo reggae song, Rising Sun a fast rockabilly number, Choirgirl a nice pop ballad that got plenty of airplay, Khe Sanh our unofficial anthem, My Turn To Cry another hard rocker, Four Walls a beautiful ballad and One Long Day a long blues workout and also Mossy's first lead vocal on that album. They are still great live now, but back in the day they were simply extraordinary.

      Yep... my guess is the final night. We had tickets to the 2nd and 3rd last shows and I don't remember seeing cameras (but it was a long time ago and there might have been 30 cameras the way my memory is these days lol). Georgia was a fairly regular encore for the band over the years and always a knock out to see. For those of us lucky enough to see Chisel regularly, their musical influences were often obvious in the choice of covers they played, but the over 2 hour length of the Last Stand shows meant they pulled out all stops. Georgia, When Something Is Wrong With My Baby, It's Only Make Believe, Don't Let Go, Knocking on Heaven's Door, Wild Thing, Twist and Shout & River Deep Mountain High were all in the setlists. My friend taped the 2 shows we saw and although the sound is rough, they are a great reminder of a couple of great nights. I've always hoped they'd release more of these shows but Barnsey's voice was in pretty rough shape (hence why our shows were rescheduled from October to December) so maybe what we got with Barking Spiders, the Last Stand video & cd and some of the b-sides is all there will be. There are a couple of other performances of Georgia here on YT if you haven't seen them. Audio from a Live at the Wireless broadcast and also performances of it for the Rockturnal TV show and also a longer show from ABC studios.
