Maaate - do the deep dive as to who is singing... that is my Australian youth soundtrack. You have the privilege of tasting how Australians survived the 70/80s...! Cheers!
This was a Memorial Concert for a guy call Andy Durant who was a member of the band Stars. Only three members of Cold Chisel were on this stage….Jimmy Barnes, Ian Moss (guitar and first vocal) and Don Walker (piano). Other artists on stage were Richard Clapton (black hair and guitar) and Renee Geyer (female vocalist) and no doubt you will find both now that you are this far down the rabbit hole.
I had the album, dont know what happened to it. Was a great album and now I have been reminded I will look at picking up the CD or download. I loved the Stars, Mighty Rock, Look after yourself, Last of the Riverboats etc. If Andy hadn't passed they would have been huge I reckon just as Little River Band were.
This concert was at The Palais Theatre, StKilda, Australia. The core of the band were the members of Stars. Andrew Durrant, the song writer of the band had passed away from cancer. A benefit concert was organised to raise money for cancer research. The invited guest's performer's were some of the best Australia had to offer. It was broadcast on ABC TV live.
The day Australian rock stood still. The Andrew Durant Memorial concert. Jimmy, Mossy, Don Walker, Mal Eastick, Mick Pealing , Broderick Smith, Richard Clapton, Renee Geyer gather to honor a great talent. Broderick Smith singing Ocean Deep still gives me chills to this day
The song was done by Bob Dylan. This was a memorial concert to raise money for Andy Durants family after he died of cancer. Its different artists..the encore song for the concert
There was so much talent on that stage but man... Broderick Smith, Broderick Smith, Broderick Smith.... l hope you get to see more of his stunning vocals from this show.
No Back Up Singers here. An All-Star Line Up. The 'girl' ( Gods! - they were all so Young here! ) is the fantabulous Rene Geyer. If you haven't discovered Rene yet... Strap IN !!! She's the Aussie Queen of Grit & Growl & Soul & Blues & Jazz... Queen of Everything really! { Might be just a tad biased}
Nick - I nearly fell off my chair when you posted this! This Bob Dylan song is the encore from the Andrew Durant Memorial Concert, Andy was the songwriter, rhythm guitarist, harmony singer and harmonica player for Stars, he died at age 25 of a melanoma. The remainder of Stars, with all the other talent you see here put the concert together (with one rehearsal) and they played every song that Andy had written for the band, then played this for the encore. I was 14 at the time, Stars were my jam back then, and the rest of the concert was overwhelmingly powerful. Broderick Smith may appear drunk, he was just emotionally spent and, as were others on stage. Glad you enjoyed Mick Pealing (sang 2nd verse), Mal Eastick (my inspiration for picking up guitar at age 10 - even got to have lessons with him many years ago) and all the others. The concert and the DVD/VHS/cd/LP etc all raised $$$ for cancer research, I believe there is an Andrew Durant cancer ward in the hospital he was treated in.
John is great. But Jimmy Barnes is the man!!! Greatest ever, in cold chisel or solo and beats everyone he sings with. So talented it’s crazy. The Goat and just a great guy
Ian Moss, another talented musician from Cold Chisel. This is a Bob Dylan song and a lot of artists finish their concerts, where there are multiply performers with this song. It is a classic
The ‘drunk’ not drunk guy, was a Broderick Smith - lead singer of the Dingoes , former number 1 on the US charts in the 70/80’s. Blues singer and harmonicast extraordinaire
It really depends on what your definition of drunk is especially in Australia. Have had the pleasure to work with jimmy and some of these musicians. They don't compete when There all on stage, they jam together it's beautiful to watch. For our mate Phill Emanuel, rip. C U O T O S.........C U On The Other Side . Jake Daniel s on the rocks baby 🤙😎
This is from The Andrew Durant Memorial Concert. List of singers in this song. Jimmy Barnes, Ian Moss, Richard Clapton, Renée Geyer, Broderick Smith, Billy Rogers, Glyn Mason
Watch Renee Geyer doing the the James Brown classic "It's a Man's World". She recorded it in the 70's and is one of the best versions I have ever heard.
The smile I have watching your reactions! Big confession to make: I've been on a ThatSINGERREACTION binge for three weeks just watching the Aussies I used to listen to as a non Australian kid in the 80's and early 90's, living in Melbourne. I am soooooo enjoying it!!!!!! Brings a smile, definitely worth recommending when down and out!!!!I'm loving the reaction by our lovely bear of a host and actually rediscovering Barnsey! Never gave him credit, he's amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Big big fan of Farnsey but what a voice Barnsey has and all the Cold Chisel crew!!!! F'u......'n WOW! Full of mastery and so much soul!!!! So thank you and big shout out Down Under! Last of all, now living in France, I get chills when listening to Farnsey singing Help in the car with my ten-year old daughter... Bisous to all!
Thoroughly enjoyed your channel for so long as it really has opened up my eyes even more to appreciate music that is in Australia take as the norm. Your honest reactions are amazing. But even more do I see things that I hadn’t seen before. The performances that are requested are nuts. This I hadn’t seen although I knew of the concert. Insane.
Bro this is the greatest lineup of Aussie talent ever on stage together, the Andy Durant memorial concert, I was there, still gives me goosebumps so many years later. Love your videos mate, cheers
Cold Chisel played my 1st fresher year concert at the University of New England NSW in 1980. Unforgettable night!! I saw Renee Geyer in the late 1970s. What a powerful voice and a beautiful woman.
That my friend was a generation of Aussie musicians and a period of Aussie music unlikely to ever be repeated again. Poker (slot) machines killed the Aussie live music scene/industry in the 90s. 1970/80s was the pinnacle of great bands
It was A Benefit concert for Andy Durant who passed from cancer in 1980. He was a member of Adelaide band Stars, who were pretty big locally. All the top talent of the time got together to raise money for Andy Durants family. They released a VHS and album, I think proceeds went to cancer research.
Such a fantastic version. So many great songs sung there that night. So glad that you then took the initiative to then review Broderick Smith (aka "drunk guy" (that wasn't drunk) singing "Ocean Deep" from the same concert, and then several Renee Geyer songs. They're locked and loaded to watch next. I've watched many of your "reactions" and love how you are so emotionally "touched" by the music you are hearing.
This Memorial to Andy Durant featured some of Australia's top performers honouring Andy ,who may well have ended up as one of Australias top song writers. He died, aged 25 . The song from the same Concert, featuring Broderick Smith - Ocean Deep -was the last song Andy wrote, while literally on his deathbed-It's on TH-cam
Great to hear Jimmy getting some points for his singing, for a long time his voice was almost treated like a joke, believe it or not but he is a genius singer. Ian Moss and Don Walker and all who contributed to Cold Chisel will always be remembered by those who know as one of the great bands who wrote some of the best original rock songs.
Andrew Durant Memorial Concert..Amazing line-up & musically brilliant..Gold class musicians.. I'm so lucky I bought this album new in 1982.. It's a double vinyl album & recorded live at the Palais Theatre in Melbourne Australia 19 August 1980..16 tracks on the album all written by Andrew Durant except for 3.... Respect was shown by Australia's premier talent to perform the songs he wrote...Full artwork & lyrics with album opened shows the whole stage & artists..Most intriguing is having 2 drum kits playing simultaneously.
That Gritty voice you were talking about is Broderick Smith, he was in bands Carson, Dingoes and Broderick Smiths big Combo, the lady that came in later with the big voice is Renee Geyer. All big Aussies Stars at the time.
Tribute to Andrew MacLeish Durant (2 October 1954 - 6 May 1980) was an Australian musician-songwriter. He was a member of country rock group Stars (1976-79) providing guitar, harmonica, and backing vocals. He was also a session and backing musician for a range of artists. He died of cancer, aged 25
Aussie music lesson 101….. this was a music ensemble…. The Andrew Durant Memorial Concert….. Andrew was a Member of STARS … band from Adelaide… Andrew died of Cancer Age 24…. Heavens Door ( Bob Dylan ) was the closing song…. Ian Moss ( Chisel) vocal…. Jimmy Barnes ( vocal)…. Mick Pealing( Stars) vocal…. Broderick Smith ( vocal)…. Mal Eastick (Stars) guitar…. Renee Geyer ( vocal)….. Richard Clapton Backing vocal….. check out IAN MOSS….. and STARS… Aussie band …. West is the Way ( Andrew Durant vocal)…. Paradise, Back Again, Mighty Rock…..etc enjoy Dom… cheers Craig.
Nice work, Craig. You saved me from spending Xmas morning compiling the list. Outstanding line-up and suitable tribute to a great musician taken too soon. Season's greetings to all.
Loved this tribute concert for Andrew Durant, Got this on tape as soon as it hit the shelves.. Even more sadness as I sit and watch this song with Broderick Smith passing away today and also losing the beautiful Renee Geyer a few months back.. Just all talented AUSSIE musicians playing for one of their lost mates. RIP to Andy, Renee and Broderick, Gone but never forgotten
We were at that concert. The guy in centre stage in the jacket is Mick Pealing. He was lead singer in a band called Stars Also from Stars was the singer, song writer and guitarist Andy Durant who died at just 25 yrs old from a skin melanoma. This was a fund raising memorial concert in Andy's honor. Mick Pealing is still playing around at local venues and his voice hasn't changed. 3 albums - Paradise, Land of Fortune and 1157. All should be found on youtube, its a mix of Aussie country rock boogie. Some great songs.
Nick , Renee Geyer and Vanetta Fields where the backing singers for Cold Chisels last stand tour in 1983 you would remember Vanetta from John Farnham’s band
The woman singer, Renee Geyer, has been around for ages. Here's a link to an old clip of her singing A Man's World th-cam.com/video/pV7Ca6pgMMc/w-d-xo.html
Want to hear what Jimmy really sounds like? check out this acoustic clip he did in his lounge room with his daughter and her friends (recorded on a phone) for the late great Doc Neeson . . it's brilliant - Jimmy Barnes - After The Rain (Doc Neeson Tribute)
This was originally a Bob Dylan song but it's been covered by soooo many artists. There are solo artists and ppl from several groups on stage here. Maybe a benefit concert? The woman singing with Jimmy Barnes is Renee Geyer, a soul singer who had a number of Aussie hits in the late 70s-early 80s.
Fund raiser for Cancer research after Andrew Durant from Stars died at age 25 from a melanoma. The remainder of his band were joined by the who's who of Oz music at the time and they played every song that Andy wrote for his bandt, and they finished with Knocking on Heavens Door as the encore. I've watched the VHS/DVD of the concert about 100 times. Stars were my favourite band growing up, Mick Pealing is a phenomenal singer, as is Broderick Smith and of course Jimmy and Renee.. Mal Eastick (on the black Strat) should be world famous
The guy on the piano is is Don Walker. He is the writer and architect of most Cold Chisel songs. Sure Jimmy and Mossy had their own masterpieces but the greatest was written by the original Drummer. "When the war is over" Get to know Don Walker and his Genius.
"Knockin' on Heaven's Door" is a song by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, written for the soundtrack of the 1973 film Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Released as a single two months after the film's premiere, it became a worldwide hit, reaching the Top 10 in several countries
Oh and one more Thing…. Broderick Smith …. Ocean Deep…. From this concert… Andrew Durant’s final song written…. About his health , death etc….. need to really listen to these words…. Very teary and beautifully sung…Top shelf.
People should give more info when they request songs. Written by: Sung By: Year of Concert: Relationship of Singers to each other: I think it would be helpful
The thing is that in the 70s and 80s everyone in the music industry knew everyone, they worked together and supported each other, it was just one massive family, because it was a relatively small industry, but it was a competitive scene, so they had too be good.
Renee Geyer was gaining popularity in the US when her singing was being introduced into US radio during the late ( 70's early 80's?) by Quincy Jones. Her biggest fans were amongst the blues fans there. She tells the story, with bitter but comic, self deprication of how Quincy warned her not to put her face on her first album release there because she needed to become more established before some people would accept that she was white. She said she thought it was rubbish and put her album out " ...with my stupid big pink face on the cover...." and that was the end of her big chance in the US.
@@sofiamiliaressis5403 It wasn't really so sad as she was exposed enough to big blues names over there who actively sought her out to sing special back ups and she still worked with big names there for years and around the world also with big names that admired her talent. They all knew her or of her, she just wasn't a big name to the American public even though they would have heard her voice backing many famous artists on famous songs. She has probably had more fun and opportunities working amongst so many of her blues idols and other greats while still being a well known giant award winning talent in her own home.country. She wasn't starved for recognition at home and if recognised as a big name in the US she might have had less control and not so much longevity and fun. Renee always laughs about that gaff of her typically being headstrong and not listening to Quincy Jone's sage advice. She has a very healthy accepting attitude of her own forceful independenr personality. It got her far and it brought her and audiences around the world happiness. She is in her mid 60's now and has a raft of interview videos she has given throughout her long career. Look her up on you tube, her attitude is a real tonic.
JB came tot he Pilbara twice, and twice was blown away by cyclones. I got to see JB at the Nookenburrah - It had 2 lines surrounding it, but I got in, and JB was amazing - pub band on steroids, and I was unbeleivebly lucky to hear this master, JB!
Yeah this is Cold Chisel Nick with special guests. Ian Moss has the smoothest voice. The girl that sings with Jimmy is Renee Geyer. Another Aussie legendary vocalist. The best contrast to Jimmy's power. Best Australian band ever... Bob Dylan wrote the song...
Hmmm.. Not Cold Chisel with special guests, it was the remainder of Andrew Durant's band Stars who were joined by various other performers including 3 members of Chisel, after Andy died of cancer
The female is Renee Geyer, she did a lot of back up singing for Cold Chisel, she is also a brilliant soul and blues singer and had a career in her own right.
I'm up at 1:51am fixing to lose my mind again just as soon as Jimmy Barnes starts singing knocking on Heaven's door ! I'm telling you this is gonna be something to see ! And Mr .TSR always deliveres the best reactions on TH-cam ! No debating nothing... That's just the Facts ! Im editing this because I am just going to mention this and kick back and wait for you to react to it and it's Jimmy Barnes and Joe Bonamassa doing Deep Purples Lazy ! Bro you will lose your mind when you do watch it .
I have been wondering when someone would request Renee Geyer, who was phenomenal. I was lucky enough to see her in concert and she wails up a storm, then soothes it to sleep.
Dude, it was the Andy Durant Memorial concert. This is a who's who of Australian rock. Half of them are dead now in 2023. Andy wrote for all of them and died at a young age mid 20's. The female was Renee Geyer, she died this year from a hip infection following surgery. Broderick Smith died this year as well. He was the frontman for Brod Smiths big combo. You have cold chisel members, Richard clapton and the list goes on. Such a pleasure and a walk down memory lane. Thank you. I love Australian music!
And, in regards to the best of the best, they most probably don't come in the top 100 of the trillions of people that have ever existed, lost in the fog of incomprehensible human history. In the vacuum of space/time, it's forever relative. You've got a great talent for singing IMO, and musical dissection. And finding ones talent's is a great joy of life:)
Ohhhh knock knock knockin on heaven's door... (BTW your show is great.... I couldn't do what you are doing.. I just like watching you feel in blues and soul mate.. )
The best version ever
Maaate - do the deep dive as to who is singing... that is my Australian youth soundtrack.

The whole Andy Durant Memorial Concert album was fantastic.
Well called. I’d completely forgotten about this concert. I’ll have to drag out the cd. Cheers
@@spy7538 and the video should be in every Aussie home
Cold Chisel did a better version as well.
When I say cold Chisel, it's just Chisel so there's much more Barnsey and mossy.

The song is written by Bob Dylan. The female singer is Renee Geyer, an amazing Aussie blues singer. You should do a reaction to her. She's just great.
Oh and one more Thing…. Broderick Smith …. Ocean Deep…. From this concert… Andrew Durant’s final song written…. About his health , death etc….. need to really listen to these words…. Very teary and beautifully sung…Top shelf.
This song is a classic that has been covered by many people. Randy Crawford and Eric Clapton are 2 that spring to mind.
I can't help but feel sorry for Americans not growing up hearing our amazing talent
🤪😀🇦🇺
Thanks, this is great. I've always loved Renee Geyer too, she was my fave! 🌏🪐🍀🌕🙏🐝🦋🎶🌈🇦🇺😊🦉🏡🌲🌴💖
Omg the goosebumps just a small example of our Aussie talent once again
People should give more info when they request songs.

Relationship of Singers to each other:
I think it would be helpful
Absolutely!
The thing is that in the 70s and 80s everyone in the music industry knew everyone, they worked together and supported each other, it was just one massive family, because it was a relatively small industry, but it was a competitive scene, so they had too be good.
Don’t think jimmy barnes has ever shown another singer up on stage - just seems to know how to meld and enhance in his collaborations
she is barnes equal .....no doubt ..every time i have seen her she blew me away -
Renee Geyer was gaining popularity in the US when her singing was being introduced into US radio during the late ( 70's early 80's?) by Quincy Jones.
Sheesh… that’s sad!

It wasn't really so sad as she was exposed enough to big blues names over there who actively sought her out to sing special back ups and she still worked with big names there for years and around the world also with big names that admired her talent.
Hey there, thank you for your review. I grew up with this and love it!
She's Renee Geyer - one of Australia's finest.
MANNNNN....that was SOOOOOO COOL...GENIUS
Yeah this is Cold Chisel Nick with special guests. Ian Moss has the smoothest voice. The girl that sings with Jimmy is Renee Geyer. Another Aussie legendary vocalist. The best contrast to Jimmy's power. Best Australian band ever... Bob Dylan wrote the song...
I got a request coming for her 💯
Hmmm.. Not Cold Chisel with special guests, it was the remainder of Andrew Durant's band Stars who were joined by various other performers including 3 members of Chisel, after Andy died of cancer
@@richardkenna149 Yes was a great concert and Andy's passing a sad loss.
@@richardkenna149 I stand corrected. I wrote it before I saw the rest of the band. What a concert though!
@@NeilBlanco you are forgiven haha
Renee Geyer, fantastic singer. Check out Dock of the Bay Renee Geyer live @ The Basement
he was there the whole time
The female is Renee Geyer, she did a lot of back up singing for Cold Chisel, she is also a brilliant soul and blues singer and had a career in her own right.
The female singing with Jimmy is Renee Geyer. You want to listen to this song which Chisel cover on their double live album 'Swing Shift.'
Thank you so much brother ❤
That Lady is Rene Geyer , my GOD you will like her Vice , The guy you mentioned possibly drunk , Brodrick Smith he is a Fab Australian Blues singer .
jimmy and the all stars
This is a Bob Dylan classic. And Cold Chisel knocks it right out of the park. ✌
I have been wondering when someone would request Renee Geyer, who was phenomenal. I was lucky enough to see her in concert and she wails up a storm, then soothes it to sleep.
We all love a bit of Aussie “Grit” 🇦🇺👍
The great Renee Geyer 👏👏👏
Dude, it was the Andy Durant Memorial concert. This is a who's who of Australian rock. Half of them are dead now in 2023. Andy wrote for all of them and died at a young age mid 20's. The female was Renee Geyer, she died this year from a hip infection following surgery. Broderick Smith died this year as well. He was the frontman for Brod Smiths big combo. You have cold chisel members, Richard clapton and the list goes on. Such a pleasure and a walk down memory lane. Thank you. I love Australian music!
Man what a great song make you want to just chill
And, in regards to the best of the best, they most probably don't come in the top 100 of the trillions of people that have ever existed, lost in the fog of incomprehensible human history. In the vacuum of space/time, it's forever relative. You've got a great talent for singing IMO, and musical dissection. And finding ones talent's is a great joy of life:)
Ohhhh knock knock knockin on heaven's door... (BTW your show is great.... I couldn't do what you are doing.. I just like watching you feel in blues and soul mate.. )
