I love the respect Justin showed Punk in calling him the best fighting game player of this era. That’s a high honor coming from Justin. Major tournament wins are obviously a factor, but you can’t deny Punk’s pickup, knowledge, and consistency.
@SLICKone-zm1kvYou go on every video involved with him simply to talk shit. I appreciate your consistency to hate someone while being on your knees for them. You're truly a trooper cause I know your neck is hurting.
Old man gamer here. . I feel Punk even with his accolades is underrated. Tons of talent, I feel he wouldve been more dominant in previous Fight Game eras because there were less anti-neutral mechanics and you could control games more on defense. Dude is a beast.
True, I do not play fighting games, but I can watch the tournaments. If SF didn't go heavy on the damage and yolo mechanics, punk would be basically the american daigo. If punk ever learns to be random or at least becomes comfortable with going for high risk, let it rip, no care just 1 round type gameplay it would be sooo bad for everyone else.
This is my favourite in the series so far, really cool to see Punk being so open about his style and his thoughts on other players, state of the game, etc. Excellent stuff, Justin : )
Loved this discussion, and i hope you keep making content like this because you ask some great questions that other people rarely touch on, and the players respect you so they give you the real answers. I really liked Punk's answer about neutral in how a lot of peoole people know how to "look" like they are playing neutral just by playing it safe and walking back and forth, but that doesnt mean they know how to actually use certain buttons at the right time or how to cause someone to make a mistake thru footsies. That's the actual difficult part of the skill. The part about him and his siblings talking crap while playing was funny too and makes perfect sense.
This is definitely the most interesting video I've seen relating to Punk. The chemistry between you two is so chill and listening to you guys talk about FGC and life is great. Justin vs Punk cookoff when?
My favorite content on this channel by far! I think because Justin's been interviewed so many times, he knows what questions to avoid asking and just be random. The fact that he hangs out with these guys gives him an in for those you-had-to-be-there questions. I laughed at the random Chinese hair stylists that was struggling with trying to dye Punk's hair.
This was a great interview! I need to watch more of these too. As for Punk, he’s one of my all-time favorites, and if there’s any doubt about how deep his knowledge of an FG is, when you watch his reactions to SFV or SF6 matches, you can learn so much about the game just from his commentary. He’s one of the greatest (for me, at least). Now let’s get those payouts! ❤🎉👏
No one was born with the skills to play fighting games, and at some point, everyone was bad, but it all comes down to the player: whether you rage quit and give up, or say GGs, and keep fighting til you reach that goal.
What about when you rage but still keep fighting and still keep losing? I feel like I am the King at being the advanced gate keeper LOL! Not expert or master top tier player or even remotely close to being pro. Just like that high end mid player, stuck as a forever gatekeeper for new people to come in and learn against and get destroyed because they lack the knowledge, then come back a month later and wash me HAHAH!
This is a dope ass format. I've also seen Tokido interviewing you on his vlog, which was cool. The dream interview partner for Run the Mindset would be Daigo imo, even if it would probably need a translator.
Punk's breakdown of his match with Tokido he did that same day at Capcom Cup was one of the best things he's ever made. I wish he'd do more of that stuff.
This interview was great! I feel like Punk has really reeled in his trash talking as he's gotten older and become a content creator, but Justin was really egging him on to drop some hot takes.
Justin u give such a nice energy & vibe, bringing the best in people. I would like to see u interview a variety of people, maybe even Capcom Executives.
31:37 is such a very good insight. In fignting games if you play a set long enough against a person, you know shit about them that they might not realize and it becomes a battle of the mind and not neccesarily the match up. I see this with my friend a lot when we play fighting games. I know him so well and hes the same way, very fundamental and mechanical player. By being almost completely random and playing against the human, I excel better rather than playing against the character or even even acknowledging their strengths. Then when they are visibly doubting themselves in terms of aggression or defense, thats when it becomes a lot easier to play with my characters strengths and formulate a more grounded approach instead of relying on a complete unpredictable strategy. My biggest weakness as a player into fighting games is mirror matches and being observed. With my homie, when I played him alone, it got to the point where I could crush him easily but the moment someone watched, something set in and I basically would just sell out. He even acknowledged it too . Then I realized if I turn on music and drown everything out, I am in a different zone and nothing really bothers me except brief pauses in play where I might start to overthink and go cold. This is why I like fighting games though, because there is a level of psychological warfare that just excites me. Learning people on the fly in online battles is really awesome, and overcoming obstacles with ingenuity and quick adaptations just makes you want to keep going and get better.
Didnt watch the video yet but the title is very correct. It's why players like him and Sonicfox dominate new games. Smash players too. Frame data, combos, flowcharts, etc are more important long term but you can immediately know who has bad neutral when they switch to a different game
20 minutes in I thought to myself “I wish I could hear someone ask punk in good faith what he thinks contributes to his lack of big event 1st places” and Justin did it. Fantastic interview, great questions & energy w/ punk. Future old man casting duo?
I think all Punk needs to do is take a moment before grand finals to write down or remind himself to focus and do what he always does. Concrete for and lock in for one more set and the chokes will go away,

@jettisonantics if you're a pro, it's because you've eclipsed basic and semi pro status... the tournaments invite good to great players... being neighborhood or basement buddy good is not the same as tournaments or league good... you find out very fast what league you're in upon the game you play vs a top local... you are not on their level. If you have seen the Brian Scalabrine vs average joes challenge videos, you'd understand exactly what I mean...

This is such a cool look into the FGC
