Very interesting vid. Ofcourse too expensive for a hobby, but for a pro, who makes this kind of joints several times a day, is this tool an absolute must.
It’s not ‘a must’ - as I say in the video it’s not for me - but of you typically have half a dozen carcasses on the go on any one job the it would be a time saver. 👍👍

Hi Peter, I have just bought myself a domino 500 and have been having fun learning it's ways. What I find frustrating is that I've spent £1000 on a tool set to help me build a kitchen that I now (it seems) need to spend another chunk of cash on to make it work as expected. When I watch all the festool live and demo stuff they make it look so easy! In reality it takes a lot of concentration to get perfect joins with the kit they sell.

I’ll have a ‘domino basics’ series coming out before too long, so keep an eye out for that. Re accessories, honestly the only one I’d recommend to start with is some kind of domino-plate, either the Seneca woodworking one, or a hone-made one. It takes the fence out of the equation, and makes a much more consistent workflow if you’re mostly working in sheet goods. 👍👍

NIce idea, but very expensive. I'll stick to the Metric Domiplate i have.
Love my domino, but keep on going back to my Lamello for board/carcass work. Much faster and easier than Domino.
I've been thinking about those dominoes, the cheapest - but most time consuming - way to do it would be chain drilling the holes with a milling drill bit .

Yes, it’s only a minor thing, and a consequence of splitting the edge/face cuts between the two parts of the system. But worth mentioning as anyone expecting ultimate accuracy could be disappointed - d the materials. 🤷♂️👍

Looks fancy but will it really save you time? I'm thinking, setting this thing up and the fact that you have to switch baseplate must take more time than drawing a couple of lines on each board and taking extra care to place the domino by hand will.
You need to do a lot of repetitive holes to make up for the extra setup time spent using a gig like this. A lot. Ikea a lot.
Well, as I say in the video, it’s aimed at guys who routinely have 5 or 6 (or more) carcasses on the go with any given job, so you would batch out the tops with the DCS (base plate) and the sides with the DVS (support bracket). And what if you don’t want / can’t have, pencil marks on the material eg pre-finished or veneered. Again, as I say in the vid, it’s not for me, and it won’t be for everyone, but if you’re the target market then it’s a *lot* cheaper than a CNC big enough to cut the mortises for you. 👍👍

In my opinion, as a cabinet maker, both the Festool domino and Mafell doweller have their place. Regrettably, Festool were in front of Mafell and didn't think forward enough to make the nose landing plate (on face side , face edge - as required) with registration zones in an aluminium extrusion. Consequently, Mafell took this lead.
However, Festool have the `Cross stop` to combat some of their lack of vision. Even this is not as good as a true `registration plate`.
CONCLUSION. Mafell wins, yet they are dowels. and then Festool wins ..... Sometimes !!!!

Am I right in saying you can buy the centering plate to start with to use as a standalone item like a domi plate? Then buy the rail later down the line if you require bit easier on my wallet that way
At the time the video was made it was available as a complete unit, but I believe they can be bought separately now - but do check with the FCTools website👍👍

Thx for the vid Peter. I have both a Domino XL (with the Seneca plates and small bit adapter), a Porter Cable plate joiner, and a pocket hole jig. For case work, it sure seems like the plate joiner is the faster and easier method, what are your thoughts on that?
I tend to think of the Domino when I need a particularly strong joint.
Thanks! I’ve never owned a plate jointer/biscuit jointer until recently tbh - I went from dowels straight into Dominos without touching biscuits, so I’m definitely faster with a Domino, personally! 👍
Not a bad price considering the obvious quality of the jig, of course it will be twice that price when it lands on Australian shores.
Don’t be too sure; ask Frank at FC Tools for a price to ship to Australia. Unless you meant import duties? Can’t help with that one! 🤷♂️👍

Hi Christopher, and welcome! I’ve only ever used cheap & cheerful dowel jugs I’m afraid, so don’t have any experience of anything better, though I’m told the Axminster one is pretty good; no personal experience of it though, I’m sorry. 🤷♂️👍

If you do a lot of carcass work, that's a lot cheaper than investing in a cnc to cut your domino holes.

Yes, it’s aimed specifically at guys in the trade who routinely have many cabinet carcasses on the go at the same time - it’s the for me, either, as I say in the vid. And yes, lots to come very soon with the CNC, I’ve been shooting video solidly for the last couple of weeks; a few more days and it’ll all be in the bag. 👍👍
We use 16mm board for carcase work in Australia, 18mm is fairly rare to see, unless you specifically order it. Will this work with 16mm board?
As far as I know it’s purely for 18mm, but throw the question over to the guys at FC Tools to be sure - link in the video description. 👍
Seems like the DDF40 will do the same thing with its attachments.
Similar, perhaps. Pricey attachments for the Mafell though. 🤷♂️👍

Yes it is, but that’s the wrong way of looking at it really; it’s aimed at *existing* domino users who routinely have 5 or 6 carcasses on the go in any given job. If you’re not a domino user, or if you don’t have that many cabinets on the go, then talk probably not for you. As I say in the vid, it’s not for me, and it won’t be for everyone. But even £1200 is a *lot* less than a CNC big enough to do the same job. 👍👍

Hi Peter, was just watching this video again as I am doing a job doing a tall carcass that requires fixed shelves within it. My question is, will this kit allow for this and could you do a video on that?
Hi Philip. Not specifically; if it’s just a one-off or small number of carcasses/fixed shelves, then you’d be better off working from pencil marks in all honesty; this jig is really aimed at folks cranking out a dozen carcasses a day, where repeat marking and alignment becomes a chore, 👍👍
Too many bits that could get lost. Nice idea tho. Whilst more expensive I think the woodpecker system is better...with exact flexibility to put a domino anywhere u want

I do a better job with a lamello/ biscuit machine, a bit of leftover kitchen worktop made into a bench dog with a 90° upstand to support the carcase sides when cutting the slots.
This seems the 'solution' of a person who's made some money in a different career and decided to be a TH-cam maker from their double garage in their retirement years.
I'm sad to learn these are promoted by an experienced maker and designed by a Scottish joiner.
What on Earth are you talking about? I’m a cabinetmaker of 20-odd years, who’s been making TH-cam videos for the last 3. Frank Cochrane is a time-served master joiner who has designed and made a variety of these jigs and templates for himself, and others through the little side business that grew to become F C Tools. This is a Domino accessory - if you’re a Lamello user (like I am) then it’s not for you; if you think you can ‘do a better job’ with kitchen worktop scraps lashed together into some kind of jig, then good for you - but again, this won’t be for you, will it?
And to be clear, nobody’s ‘promoting’ anything (a promotion implies payment, and no money or goods are being exchanged here) I periodically do videos about things I think are useful, or might be of interest to my audience, and yes, I try to showcase smaller British manufacturers and makers because I like to ‘fly the flag’ especially in these uncertain times. If you check the back catalogue you’ll see videos on products from Superior Levels, Ooznest, The Block Scribe, Benchdogs, Swanky Scribe, and many others. Do they benefit from being showcased here? I sure hope so.
Like you, I am also a bespoke cabinet maker of 20 years, (Rycotewood-city&guilds1-3 - 3 year apprentice+decades in the trade).
The worktop isn't a jig as such but rather a flat surface to aid biscuit jointing with a 90° upstand to stop the carcase side from slipping away from the machine, think of it as a more substantial reduced depth bench with a 90° back.
I had subscribed for along time and watched many of your videos previously, hence my disappointment with this particular video.
I'm not commenting to disregard this method i.e wrong application of Domino as others have also commented or the reference issue the jig creates but rather that there is a more accurate (on the plane that you need the accuracy)/cheaper/faster solution.
I feel this channel has a rather unhealthy obsession with this particular machine now (yes I have one with the aftermarket depth extension bits to overcome it's depth issues when a machined on bead is in the way of the female mating surface on the styles and use other festool equipment on a daily basis). I'm also a champion of British products (I use wadkin, Clifton, Robert Sorby not lie Nelson or non Brit equivalents where possible and warranted).
My use of the word promotion wasn't intended to suggest payment in any form but I can see the inevitability of TH-cam paranoia though.
