    Sedge and Big D - thank you for making this video. Beginner DIY woodworker here and I was struggling with 1/2 inch plywood this weekend and was so frustrated. This was so timely and made my first drawer box today that perfectly lines up and was so easy to put together!

    videos on ways to do bulk things in a fast and efficient way are always very helpful! If only we could still get the vac sys to really speed things up. I learned about it a few months ago and was very sad when I saw it's no longer available.

    Grest build. For paint grade, always keep some of the pre-finished drawer sides and 1/4" (5mm) pre-finised plywood around. Boxes ready to be installed in 10 minutes, no waiting. Pretty joinery to the front, Pocket holes to the rear. Even replaced my mom's kitchen and her bathrooms drawer, with pull outs, years ago using this method. So you know it has to be good.

    Great video and technique. Now I want to get some Sipo dominos and try through versions. I recently made my first set of drawers using a dovetail jig with the OF1400, but this looks like a much faster version that offers a nice alternative.

    There is a waaaay simpler method. Clamp the front of the drawer to the top of your bench so the narrow edge is flush to the edge of the bench. Then clamp the side of the drawer to the side of your workbench so it forms a 90° butt joint with the front. Set your domino to the appropriate thickness and depth, and bore your mortises through the sides into the fronts/backs in one go. If your vise is wide enough, you can put all four pieces on at once. No marking required, no vertical plunging, and only 8 operations instead of 16.

    • @sedgetool
      @sedgetool  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This method you mentioned has never worked well for me ..... you should do a video on this technique....

    • @jessehughes3877

      That's how I did my entertainment center drawers. Built the boxes, then added domino connections to keep them from "pulling apart" when you open the drawers. Worked well for me.

    • @bigredracingdog466
      @bigredracingdog466 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@daveklein2826 I don't make videos. If you want to test the concept, go out to your shop and try it with a couple scraps of wood. It will take you longer to get your Domino out and set it up than to make your mortises. There is zero chance of a misalignment this way because you're boring both corresponding mortises simultaneously. If you don't like it, fine, do it Sedge's way. Woodworking should be about experimenting and finding what works best for you.

    Are these the correct measurements for the Drawer Bottom?
    Groove for Drawer Bottom
    * 6mm deep
    * 12mm from bottom
    Drawer bottom dimensions
    * 10mm + Length of side piece
    * 10mm + Length of front/back piece

    Why not clamp the two pieces together and cut both mortices at the same time, from the outside of the drawer? I think I saw Jason Bent do it that way.

    Hey guys, I notice you use a lot of 3/4" material. I have a Domino 700 and I was wondering if there is anything wrong with using an 8mm bit (and an 8mm domino) for 3/4" material. I know that a lot of guys use the 5mm or 6mm because it's close to 1/3 the thickness of the material, but that's not an option for the DF700 ,and I see a lot of guys using 3/8" dowels for 3/4" material and that's half the width of the material. Any advice you could give would be great. Thank!

    • @sedgetool
      @sedgetool  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      using a 8mm domino is doable ...but ... it leaves a weak shoulder....I have seen woodworkers do this and it has worked well in cherry and white oak..

    An alternative is just to butt-joint glue the box first, and then comeback with domino 700 which can mortise deeper holes. The dominos are now effectively fat wood nails.

    I think through tenons are nice in theory, but the Domino doesn't make the cleanest hole profile. As shown at 18:59 you've also got some jagged edges on both the drawer face and the tenon. I guess you could sand it and add some glue/sawdust to fill, but then you're losing out on the pre-finished aspect. I almost think you're better off not doing through tenons with the Domino.
