    In this episode we take a(nother) look at the Source Audio Nemesis Delay and the Boss DD-500. They’re both incredibly capable, modern, multi-feature delay units that offer you an almost infinite amount of sonic and creative potential.
    The issue with so much capability, however, is that that it can take a while to get to grips with finding it all, as we found out when we first looked at them. We went away, studied manuals and came back slightly better equipped to scratch the surface of what’s possible. Join us if you dare (and can stay awake) as we engage with a little option paralysis and the interesting discussion that ensues. Do you need one? Maybe…

    The Boss DD-500 might secretly be the best delay pedal on the market, especially at the price. Since getting it, I’ve retired all of my Strymon delays. I find it sounds better, and it’s easier to use.

    • @ryanslauderdale
      @ryanslauderdale 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And in the used market, I've seen them for about 200 USD. So a lot more sensibly priced than the Strymon camps.

    A welcome return to the Nemesis. Thanks! I love this pedal. It is simple enough to get great useable sounds right out of the gate and deep enough to keep things interesting. Add in the Neuro Hub and scenes and it is just what I want in a pedal. The Source Audio folks are doing some great things.

    The best thing about the sub-division settings is when you have MIDI plugged in from a synth sequence and you get BPM delays.

    Thanks for taking the time to learn and dig deeper with these units. As you can see, sometimes taking the time to really dig in and get your hands dirty can reveal wonderful results. Keep rockin it you guys, I love it.

    Most of the time this channel gives me GAS. Today it gave me option paralysis. Thanks for doing the homework for me, guys!

    I own a LOT of delay pedals and the dd500 is my favorite. Easy to make good and usable sounds. Don't have to dive deep if you don't want to.

      At the price, it’s probably the best delay on the market.

      Same here...as far as gigging sound goes, it’s top of the heap, imo. It’s that perfect combination of sonic quality and “mix cutting”

    The comments on these always make me laugh. You've got all the people complaining that things are too complicated and that the sounds aren't usable. And then you've got the people who heard one note of one of the super tweaked out modulated delays and went "I know exactly how I can use that."

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +Matt Snyder It's all good Matt! Our challenge is trying to stay relevant to as many people as we can, without getting so bored that we want to give up altogether. I see a future (Mick here) where we do more stuff that genuinely interests and inspires us, and less stuff that's there because it's 'popular'. Meantime, we live and learn!

      That Pedal Show Mick and Dan, i would like to thank you guys for every single second of these educative videos. Your show has taught so much to so many of us.
      For the new year, i wish to you, good health, and to see your show getting bigger and better than you would ever hope. Cause i believe you deserve it, with all the info you give us. May you always have fun doing what you do.
      Now, if i may, a few requests😀.
      Can you cover, if you haven't yet, the following matters:
      1)Attenuators in use with amps that are too loud for bedroom practice, and how, if at all they change our amps and pedals sound.
      2) Equipment suitable for protection of our amps and pedals, from power surge spikes and other currrent problems. E.g.: maybe U.P.S. equipment and such...
      3) Signature pedals, and what extra they offer, e.g.: The Jerry Cantrell Wah pedal, or the Joe Bonamassa Fuzz Face pedal.
      4) Weird, unusual and/or funny pedals.
      5) Maybe some more guests/ friends?
      The best to you for 2017, guys. Cheers.

    You guys thank you so much for the deep dive! I have a DD500 and you taught me how to do things I didn't even know it could do. I was worried when I chose it instead of the strymon but it looks like the boss is a better value given that it's way cheaper.

    Nemesis owner well over a year. I don't really mess with the app for deep editing. My tip:. Use app to audition the engines you like, then "Burn" to engine slot (this was not demonstrated in video). Then you'll be fine with the controls on the pedal w/o app. Ex: swap out Degrade for Oil Can. If I like engine layout then I can get around by saving Preset 8 as Binson tape to avoid burning over more. I keep it simple & the community support is immense at TGP forum.

    Pedals as complex as these absolutely need to have easy access to user preset sounds in a live situation. The DD500 looks amazing.....offering multi tap delays via the 2 preset at once feature........Shadows heaven.

    Watching you guys say nice things begrudgingly, knowing you guys would never use these types of pedals, is kind of fun.
    I get it. There is something to be said for immediacy. For my home studio though, there is something to be said for having every reverb under the Sun at my disposal.
    I would like an Earthquaker Devices episode. They make some of the coolest, whacky pedals around, and they sound GREAT!

    Thanks for this episode. I was looking at the Nemesis and loved the sounds but the placement of the jacks won’t work for my board. The DD-500 was ok in other gear demos I watched but after seeing how you went through the options of what it can do I went ahead a ordered the DD500. Like you said, “they all sound great, just pick one and get to playing”. Another factor is price. If the Timeline is out of your budget then there is always another pedal with similar sounds at a cheaper price.

      Hi, Michael. Yes, you can set the pedal for a global Tap Tempo across all presets - you just need to go into the Neuro Mobile App and hit the "Keep Delay Time Constant with New Preset" switch. You can change preset a few different ways - a MIDI controller can change presets, an external switch (most 1/4" TRS switchers) will do it, or (when the pedal is bypassed) you can scroll through presets with the Tap Tempo switch.

    I'm glad you did this. It reflects my experience. I arse around endlessly at home with my Timeline & Big sky & pro logic. But if I'm playing with my mates, velcro is disturbed & it's a DD7 with a short analogue delay which I don't change at all. Perhaps I need 2 boards. One for the real world & one for messing about. A good excuse to buy more pedals ;-)

      +2speedy4u22 Thank you much! As you might be aware, Dan and I started TPS essentially in our spare time. Nobody is funding it (our T Shirt sales, Patreon and small retail sponsorships are just about funding it now), and we still run our own respective businesses as our day jobs. This gives us an advantage and also a disadvantage. On the advantage side, we're not commercially obliged to anyone, which means we can do and say what the hell we like. Hooray!
      On the disadvantage side, we're always running just about by the skins of our teeth... so the occasional mistake and misjudgement is inevitable. :0) We're lucky to have such a big group of people who will take us as they find us, good and not so good. We're extremely grateful for the support and feedback and we will ALWAYS try to be better.
      Thanks for watching and getting involved!

    I really, really enjoyed this. I didn't think the original Serious Delays Part 2 was all that bad, but this format of the show is so cool. Just a thought: Maybe every six months or so you guys could set aside an episode slot for another like this one really detailing big complex pedals that you know well, cause I really have never seen a review as helpful as this one of anything. It really uprooted my conception that the TimeLine was still the indisputable king of multifunction delays, and I was in fact the person that Mick was talking to at 48:30. Obviously you're both very busy to learn new giant pedals all the time, but I for one would very much benefit from it. You guys have really helped to restore my faith in the future of electric playing, so regardless of what happens with TPS down the road, I'm glued to my seat!
    If that falls through my other suggestion is for Six Fantastic Tremolos! (Chase Bliss Gravitas requested of course, though you may also wish to check out the Spaceman Voyager I)
    I will hopefully be able to donate to Patreon/buy a T-shirt in 2017 and also look forward to hearing those new songs! Happy new year guys :)

    Great vid guys, I remember you doing this video for years ago… Holy crap I’m getting old! But I find myself looking for a multi function delay… Thought about getting a stamp or a helix but just don’t want to pay for overdrives that I won’t use… And the thought of programming one of these beasts is a little intimidating but at least it’s only working with delays. That degrade sound on the nemesis, Dan as soon as he started playing I was transported back to the 80s and I felt like I was watching Miami Vice!! @Regular Joseph Its a great delay pedal and you can find just about any settings you need in this delay to play with. I find myself pairing it up with a BOSS DD3 so I can use the Nemesis for more tricky types of delay and able to cut back to a always on delay of the DD3. The inner settings of this pedal gives you near endless possibilities.

    Dan, be sure to browse through the shared presets in the Neuro app. There are some great ones in there although the ones you made sounded excellent, too.
    Mick, the DD-500 can blow your mind even further. It's kind of insane. You can make the modulation speed increase when you play harder 😳 Crazy stuff like that.

I'm learning about analog synths now-Moog has a Model 15 app that's a bottomless pit of tinkering and experimentation-and I get that "Oh no I have to read the manual" feeling a lot. Frustrating to not just get great sounds right away, but I've turned a corner and learned quite a bit.

    I'm not sure I like the separate cell phone interface. I just want it right there in front of me. Turn the knob, flick the switch, cool organic, earthy tones and effects. I think most people are biased against Boss because the brand is EVERYWHERE and often the sounds their pedals make are also either way too familiar or cheesy sounding.

    For me what really sets the DD-500 apart (aside from its epically terrible manual) is the 8 assign functions that can be changed using the Tap/Ctrl switch. This lets you change up to 8 different parameters with the touch of a switch. Additionally, you can use the Wave pedal assign to assign an LFO to change those parameters at any rate you chose (similar to the way Chase Bliss pedals do) These are incredibly powerful tools that make the depth of the pedal near endless.

      Bruce Johnson something I've learned over the years, when you're dealing with really full-featured pedals, don't feel like you need to use all the features and modes. That's where most people go wrong. They're bending over backwards trying to find a way to use the crazy helix delay in their blues gig. Don't even try. Find 3-5 (or whatever) sounds you like and can use, tweak them until you love them, and use them. The other modes aren't going to have their feelings hurt if you don't like them.

    • @777Yoni
      @777Yoni 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. I got it more for some nutty studio sounds, but I still have to sit with it for a bit. I didn't make my original statement as any slight except perhaps toward my time management. Peace.

I am saving and want to set a budget for a generator and the rest of the power supply goodies from the Gigrig that I might need. On your spread sheet, you don't have the DD-500, so I would like to know if I will need another Timelord etc. for it. Saving up, because before another pedal, I need a good power supply to build my board. Thanks and keep it up!!!

    There's a clear role for these pedals ( read effect units) in the studio. I find just as you said there can arise unexpected and and inexplicable inspiration from playing a second or two of any of these sounds. It's not all about playing out or functioning in a band.

    BTW, when you tried to demonstrate max delay on TAPE on the DD-500 you managed just to hit max at 600 ms. It is constraining max delay time if you use a) A/B simul mode, i e two delay engines at once b) the Input/output mode at A/B. You have to set them at mix mode first, and also, leave A/B simul mode, and choose "Normal". Then, 10 seconds is available on most engines, including tape, except filter, and tera echo mode. Especially with latest firmware.

    • @ThatPedalShow

      +Paul Honeycutt Ae we conclude, it doesn't matter which one you buy. Buy the one your heart is telling you to buy and spend time learning it. There's nothing to choose between them in sound, once you get editing. If you can be arsed, that is!

    Very often, I observe non-analog drythrough delays beat their ADT competitors in terms of sheer tone. Nemesis and the Empress Vintage Modified Superdelay had some of the best delay sounds I heard online. On the other hand, for many including me, ADT is a huge priority.

      @ThatPedalShow  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Larry Lachmann Yep! That's what we'd do Larry. Dan absolutely loves the TimeLine, whereas I know that I will literally never give that much time to something this complex so it's a total waste of money for me. That said, I would absolutely buy an Echoplex... more money, one sound. Horses for courses! :0)

      My left and right brain are at war when it comes to these things. I agree with you that it takes quite a lot of time to learn. My usual, "just start turning knobs" approach didn't work at all with the Timeline. I have many things to cover when I'm trying to write and record a song, so like you, I kind of abhor the learning curve time vacuum. My right brain is in total agreement with you. Get the Echoplex and shut up!! haha But a new one super tweakable one? No way!!! No way!!! lol

    Great work guys, its nice to see someone reviewing pedals that doesnt throw it out the window because they dont understand the functions. Would be really good if you could run through what the details in the menu of the DD500 are. Its an amazing delay but tbh theres a bit of guess work when it comes to things like pre depth and post depth ducking, all those crazy things we dont hear about as guitarists unless we get into audio engineering lol

    Entertaining and educational, as always! Mick, there is a DD500 owners group, on FB, that is extremely helpful with custom shared patches and preset lists. Hey Mick, Dan... You guys Rock! Being the owner of a Big Sky, I just ordered a SA Collider... Sometimes I like keeping it simple, other times, when playing ambient type guitar, I want the odd.. this pedal does both within reason, and the sound quality (especially in stereo) is too boocoo! lol

    • @mattgilbert7347
      @mattgilbert7347 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm considering the Collider as it has analog dry-thru and like to play wet/dry (if possible, right now I'm happy if a venue allows amps at all, let alone more than one).
      Apparently, you cant use non-analog dry-thu in wet/dry because...idk. It messes with the amp phase or something. It's a bummer because I have 3 One Series pedals and want to run them to one amp only, my wet amp. Might have to just go stereo, which is fun at home but not aways practical live.
      I'm trying to persuade myself to keep the Nemesis because I can't afford any new gear, so I'm up late rewatching this.

    Nice! I'm glad it's back up. I think it'd be interesting to see a head to head of the Nemesis and Alter Ego x4. For me, the Alter Ego x4 was the way to go because it's so manually accessible and has three presets on the fly.
