Maj Askew explains how to use three different oil paint mediums to get the result you desire! Oil paint can be very challenging due to it's long drying time, but with the help of these mediums you can make multiple layers in the same day.

It take less than three days for a linseed oil mix to dry depending on the color. If you can't mix your paint correctly (more than necessary), or are glazing with extreme amounts of oil, then maybe what you say is true. Liquin Original is an alkyd resin, and just like all resins, they have their problems. First problem is resins yellow, and there is no solution to this. Linseed oil will also yellow, but UV treatment will reverse the yellowing with no degradation of the paint film. Another problem of alkyd mediums is they can "cry" as they age, the paint might actually begin to weep tears of resin constitutes after a number of years. If used below other normal oil films, this can cause de-lamination.
I would suggest using acrylic if you want these fast drying techniques, just like the alkyd, it dries even faster. Alkyds have a matte finish, which is not unlike that of acrylic paint, and to me, if you are using solvent based mediums of alkyds, you might as well go full acrylic and drop the fumes. The alkyds are basically acrylic but instead of a water respired catalyst, they use solvent based catalyst. The Daniel Smith medium might contain another resin, damar, in the mix, which will impart gloss.

Fine and interesting information about mediums that shorten drying time. I especially appreciated that you told about the differences in shine of the three mediums you presented.

So, how do you know if you’re ratios are such that you have a fast drying layer under a slow drying one?
Also, if you’re using these, how many days do you give yourself to complete the painting before it’s too dry to layer more into?
Lastly, how long do you wait till you varnish?

How fast does the Dan Smith medium dry compared to the other two mediums you featured here?

Hi, I loved the video. As a new oil painter it was VERY helpful! Is the Daniel Smith medium you are using the water soluble stuff? I can't find any other type listed on their website. By the way, is there a chirping noise in the background of your video or am I going slightly mad? Thanks.

+Alena Freeman I am also unable to find anything other than the water soluble medium on their site. I am unsure if this is because of a change to their product line or if they simple carry it in their physical stores.
Also, I am happy to say you are not mad! Maj had a smoke detector that needed a new battery. She did not have a way to replace it since the ceiling in her studio is at least 20' high. That is where the chirp is coming from and I tried to take it out of the audio, but it's still there and it makes me mad.

Liquin Fine Detail is just regular Liquin diluted with turpentine. Liquin is a synthetic resin desolved in linseed oil; it's best to think of it as a synthetic hard varnish. (Natural hard varnishes are copal varnish and amber varnish-these were used by the Old People in paint mediums because they do not re-dissolve after they have dried. The soft varnishes, such as dammar and mastic, were NOT used in paint mediums because they create a weak paint film which will re-dissolve when the painting is cleaned. Soft varnishes therefore cause a lot of paint to come off when the painting is cleaned.)

Just use linseed oil cooked wirh calcined marble dust, and thin it with solvents as regular. You can melt dammar orr mastic crystal, or wax if you want at cooking. But just oil cooked with 5 percent calcined marble would be 10 times better than any liquin.

Doc B I just did a search as was also unable to find it online. I will check with Maj to see if she knows if you can only purchase it in the store or if they may have discontinued that product.

Maj said they recently got rid of a lot of tier online store for some reason, but she expects they still produce it as it is a staple product of theirs. She suggested you try calling their customer support and seeing if you can purchase it that way.

what if I put the painting in freezer? Will it dry fast

    • @LastingImpressionArt
      @LastingImpressionArt  8 ปีที่แล้ว

+shevanti verma I have heard of people storing their oil paints and dirty brushes in the freezer to keep them from hardening as quickly, but it is very important to make sure they are covered. Oil paint hardens from oxidation, so the more exposure they have to air the faster they "dry." Covering them and storing them in the freezer will slow down the process.

Very informative video. I would thank for that.
But as others pointed out it is frustrating to listen to you because you get stuck with 'aw a aa ...'.
You need little practice for fluency. May be a mental rehearsal would help.
Thanks for the video. It was useful.
