    Wow! Thanks so much for this video. I have seen siccative on magazines, adverts etc. but never saw or heard how to use it. Long drying time is what put me off oil painting for years. It’s also great that you only need a couple of drops of it mixed with linseed oil. You have encouraged me to get back to painting again. 👍

    When I paint with oils I use a medium made of equal parts turps, damar varnish and boiled linseed oil. Works a treat. Not as fast as siccative but it won't remove hide from hands.

    Once mixed can the Cobalt drying medium be saved? and if it can how long? Very good information I purchased a bottle of the Cobalt Drier from Dick Blick today and cant wait to test it out.

    Is there any other substitute for the fixative 'coz it's kinda hard to find that one and not usually available? Thanks

    Isn’t it extremely important to use active ventilation when using cobalt thinner? Like it’s not enough to have two windows open, you also have to have an exhaust fan going always?

      Cobalt is a surface drier which is supposed to protect painting from dust as the inside dry longer.
      Too much though might cause wringlking on the film.
      By letting the batch polymerize like this in the video, i suppose that reduces the chance of wrinkling.

    Hi there , thank you for your information , please tell me how to use Linssed Oils from the first Layer to the last layer [ maybe any painting would need at least 3 layers of painting while waiting the previous layer to dry ] , and how to avoid CRACKS in the subsequent layers ? And what is the maximum layers i can put on a Canvass and at the same time avoiding subsequent crackings of layers after layers ?

    • @PaintingCourse
      @PaintingCourse  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Walter Herro "Thick over lean" is what is commonly taught in Art Schools. Which means you should add more oil to the paint as you add layers. Painters like Vermeer had dozens of layers on a painting.

      Hi , thanks for your reply , but at different layers we should wait the Canvass dries well before going to the next layer , and what proportion of Lin Seed must be added into Turpentine at each further layers ?
      Most probably Vermeer did lost of glazing beside Linseed oil mixed with Turpentine , and old artists used other techniques to make the surface more Shinny , such as adding other than Linseed oil ....

    What will happen if i use only Siccative, without any other medium, when glazing ?

      It would be really brittle if you're painting on canvas. I wouldn't recommend it. Plus smell would be very strong.
