Thanks for going to all the trouble of making this video. I've been painting on and off for years. I only just started oil painting again after quite a long hiatus and found this really helpful. I've never been quite sure how to use mediums, I just thinned the paint with solvent and hoped for the best when trying to get the precise flowing details out of my brushwork. This should help quite a bit :)

I bought my 2 first gamblin mediums..They are SOLVENT FREE GEL and NEO MEGLIP..They just arrived yesterday, and I quickly
made some little works with them and oil colors.....
Solvent Free works fine....BUT Neo Meglio it's just PERFECT 👍...The bending of this medium with oil color is just so good,.the feel in your brush's hair when you work with it , the spreding ...are ALL so right .....
The medium don't adds very much gloss when mixed with oil colors ,but make them more transparent and allowds you to work with fluid transparent colors in the stile of italian Renesance masters....🙏

I was born with microcephaly similar to aurtisum and I can’t use things that’s toxic . I want to use safflower oil ,solvent free non toxic gel that comes with one of the kits of of the colors and walnut oil. Everything else has chemicals that can harm your body and can give you cancer and causes cancer . My grandma from Canada 🇨🇦 Ontario is a high stage of cancer and one of her last words she said to her family sence she was speaking French and I found out in 7th generation Métis . My mom is addicted to protecting me and body . Which nontoxic mediums do I use because it’s time for me to oil paint again because I was afraid of oils because of bad toxic chemicals and because trying to find the right oils and I keep messing up . Acrylics and waters colors and oil pastels are the only things I’ve used sence I stoped . Which mediums should I use and can you do each of the mediums Like mixing the paints . I don’t like too fast drying paints or mediums and too slow .
Thank you for this video .

      @sydneyreneeart  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hey there! I would recommend using non-toxic oils such as lavender oil, walnut oil or linseed oil while working. There are some solvent free mediums out there or you could also try water soluble oil paints. As for cleaning your paint brushes, a non-toxic solvent option is Bio-based Artists Solvent sold be The ART Treehouse or Turpenoid Natural. Manny of the essential oils make good brush cleaning solvents. Lavender oil is actually a stronger solvent than turpentine. Walnut oil is good for cleaning brushes while painting. However your final cleaning should be done with soap and water. I hope this helps. :)

Hi, I bought a tube of gambling free gel, my question is: Can I start the first layer using pure oil paint out of the tube and after it dries I paint the next layer with gel added to my paint? And can add a layer of pure paint over the Layer that gel added to paint without breaking the fat over lean role? It is confusing that the gel is both fat and fast dry.

    Quick question…
I noticed that you used an “Artisan” water soluble oil paint for part of your demonstration. Is this something you use often in your work and do you use water as a solvent when using it?

Heyy I appreciate it! So glad you were able to take something away from this video!! I don’t use water soluble oil paints often at all in my work, in fact I believe I only have a couple tubes of it in my arsenal lol however you can use it in conjunction with oil paints that are oil based, along with different mediums and solvents and it won’t mess up your painting. You can also use water to dilute it but for the sake of this demonstration I used a variety of mediums to show the difference effects you can still make with a water soluble oil paint. Hope this helps!

Please make another video with other painting mediums....if you own some....My favorite oil painting medium until now is Venetian Medium from french brand Lefranc-Bourgeois ....I see on videos that european art products are not that popular there in USA......
Also the american painters on You Tube they are not awere about TIXOTROPY...This medium from Lefranc Bourgeois is tixotropic = you can easely build 2 or even 3 layers of paint , fresh paint , one on top of another , in the same painting sesion....Fresh paint over fresh paint WITHOUT dessolving the undernith....
It may worth to give it a try....
I understand the popularity of Galkyd becouse it offers quick polimerization ( quick "drying")...but tixotropic gels offers quick setting.....It's better and I did not seen, by reading , that american brands ofers this tipe of product....
Maybe Maroge Medium from Old Masters might be.........
ALSO : The isues of thinner named terpentine....I understand it's so and so....BUT : IT OFFERS YOU THE MOST INTIMATE BLANDING, THINNING, SPREDING qualities from all the thinners I ever used.....I did not used Gamsol........

Hey Astrid, great question! I didn't even realize that's what I used in this example lol I just grabbed a paint bottle and got to it! However you can actually use water mixable oil paints with other paint mediums and solvents. It's certainly a nice option that allows you to use water instead of solvents, but it won't harm the painting if you do. Just make sure to stick with one or the other and don't mix solvents and water together. I really don't prefer one over the other, I use both of those products all the time in my paintings. :)

@@lifeismusicparnadonkers hey! You don’t necessarily need solvent to clean your brushes, you can wipe off the majority of the paint from your brushes on a paper towel or rag.. and then use some sort of oil like linseed or walnut oil to remove more paint. Then you can take some soap (I like to use pink soap or dawn dish soap) and wash your brushes with lukewarm water. Use your fingers to gently work the soap into the brush, and then rinse thoroughly. It may take a couple washes to get all of the paint out. I then like condition & shape my brushes with more oil (Linseed or walnut) and hang them upside down for my next use.
