Subaru WRX GC8 Super Rusty Rear End Restoration - Part 3 - Epic Transformation!

- You've no idea how happy i am to see this car back on it feet with all its rust issues finally sorted once and for all!
Anyway in this episode as i said above i get all the restored and refurbished parts installed back onto the frame of the Impreza, My first job was to apply an anti corrosive cavity wax to any areas i wont have easy access to clean when the car is all built up.
After applying the wax and setting the parts aside to dry i focused my attention onto cleaning the paint from the hub mating faces with a 60 grit flap wheel, this leaves a lovely clean finish for the parts to sit on and not cause any alignment or torqueing issues later on.
Once cleaned headed over to the press to press in a pair of new wheel bearings. After that job i grabbed the tank straps and tank and got them back into position in the car as these need to go in first as all the other parts fit around the tank, once the tank was in final position i fitted a new fuel filler neck as mine had rusted through and wasn't salvageable.
By the time i had done all that the cavity was had skinned over and i could get the bushes pressed into the crossmember and subframes and get them back in the car and of course torqued down to spec.
From this point onwards in the video its pretty much a case of grab a part, fit, repeat so i wont bore you with all the details lol .
When all of the standard parts were back in place i could set my attention onto the fun part of fitting the upgraded 2 pot brake calipers, as i say in the video these can only be fitted with an adapter bracket of by changing to new age hubs. I also fitted the larger 290mm brake discs for that wee bit extra stopping power :)
And thats pretty much it for this episode, bumper on, wheels on, back on the ground and ready for the next stage, middle section restoration, a new stainless steel exhaust system and a full detailing session and it will be good to go.

A little History
The project in question is the engine bay in my 94 Subaru Impreza WRX. As i can be heard saying in the intro of this video i love impreza's and i wanted a rust free one as all the UK ones suffer from lots of rust issues so in 2004 i imported this car from Japan and it was totally rust free when it arrived all those years ago. It has a couple of blisters here and there now but thats to be expected when living in Scotland.
Anyway im getting off track, I was having lots of fun driving the car at full boost everywhere until 2014 when the thought popped into my head " lets go for more power" so i took the engine out and begun the process of having it all upgraded, better gaskets, race bearings, forged pistons, con rods etc etc then life got in the way and the engine was put to the side and the car was stored in a shed for the past 5 years.
The initial condition of the car looks horrifying but its only a thick layer of dust and crud on it and there is a good layer of carnuaba wax separating all the crud from the paint so a quick pressure wash and she'll be looking good again .

I can't help but say, from my perspective, its almost like watching someone assemble a new car. Very neat and tidy job. Giving such attention to detail only ensures confidence and peace of mind when you go for a spin. When you fully restore the part between the two bumpers, you can take comfort in knowing that you'll never have to worry about the next part that will give out, rust out or fall off. I always admire people that do this kind of restoration of cars, it's good to see people still valuing old things in this rubbish throw away society we live in now.
Exactly far to much waste in todays society! This car is a prime example the amount of people that said just fling all the parts out and buy new... why? The old stuff is still perfectly serviceable and with all the rust removed and repainted will be just as good as new for years to come and by using the cars original parts it keeps it genuinely original :)

I really like the simplicity of your videos @RRC Restoration. Currently going through a similar process with my 2003 WRX which was in good nick until I got it 9 years ago but after 19 years, half of which have been sitting on the street in Scotland it's pretty crusty.
One thing I'd recommend to anyone pulling the back end of their classic apart and wanting to upgrade to the 2 pot rear calipers, is to order a set of newage WRX backing plates for the back. If you have everything apart anyway it's a simple job to swap them in and it means you don't need to run adaptor brackets as the caliper bolts straight in as it would in a sewage car.
Absolutely beautiful car. Would love to be driving that around here in the states. I did a light cleanup on an 07 WRX I picked up a month ago. Watching this video has me convinced to clean it up more.

I run a land rover defender for work, and had that same problem with the filler pipe. I’m sure the company we lease from repaired it in the same fashion (you did for jokes) but it was for real! Won’t mention the company name, but after they had finished the job, they called me up to tell me NOT fill it completely up! Unbelievable!

I'm about to do the same on a Lincon LS, the only difference is it has been sitting outside for over 6 years and the rockers are completely gone, I live in Iceland so the salt has been doing work on that one. these videos have been giving me more confidance to start on that project :P

Absolutely love these video's,, the reason for torqueing the bolt is that each face will have a different friction coefficient , so tightening the bolt will localise it and concentrate the torque at the bolt 🤔👍

Howdy. The only thing I didn't like was pressing the bushings without a bit of Vaseline or oil ... I suffered 10 years ago at a service, when they forgot to put Vaseline on a log, he took it crooked and damaged it. So be very careful. The rest down with the hat. You are an artist. I own a 2003 GD blobeye WRX, and I've been dealing with rust and body repairs just last month. I have the car back since yesterday, and I've never been happier:-) Can't wait to see your car ripping the roads again, and I'm really curious about the final numbers for HP, and torque. You had me going with that fuel filler neck and duct tape. At first I was confused (What?!), then the anxiety set in (He's not....) and finally disbelief (no he can't!!!). Classic. Funniest thing I've seen for a while.
Oh, and that's a HUGE amount of rust. Do you guys have salt on your roads? We don't get that sort of rust unless we're using the car to tow boats. And I doubt your rex has been towing boats!
