- Anyone who has owned and built a Subaru knows that the things are like Legos. Engines and parts from all sorts of different years and models can be made to work with each other with relative ease. So in the never-ending search for power, our buds at I-Wire decided that 4 cylinders just weren’t enough - so the EZ36 flat six out of a Subaru Tribeca was their swap of choice. And since wiring swaps are their bread and butter, you know this is going to be a clean build.

its still essentially a 90s souped up econocar, i own one and it definitely ticks the shitbox list. cheap plastic, awful sound insulation and rattles and i wouldnt have it any other way :-)

I personally don’t think you need to have the fastest and craziest stuff, to have a fun car.
This thing would make an amazing autocross or track car as well because it doesn't have too much power and is well balanced and linear.

As a rare SF/GC parts guy, I can really appreciate this build. It's the little things that most people would think is a complete waste of time which make the car awesome! Props to the owner.

I remember when the Brat came out and everyone talked about the seats and how it was a tax work around to keep it from being classed as a truck

23:16 that's because Porsche worked with Subaru in the development of ez30 engines, 9000 rpm in a SUV or a family car (Legacy/Liberty/outback) thank you very much Stuttgart.
rivahoff the EZ30r redlines at 7200RPM. But yeah he said he has no limiter which would be an absolutely insane experience hitting 9000rpm that’s the goal for mine

Alexander Martinez the ez30R I know was definitely co-designed by Porsche they helped developing the active variable cam lift and active variable valve lift which is similar in power delivery to v-tec but comes in around 4500rpm through too 7200rpm. Don’t know where that 9000rpm thing came from probably sounds like it because it’s high compression

h6cole i know it’s not a Porsche engine? it was co-designed by Porsche and Subaru meaning they helped develop the AVCS and AVLS but was built by Subaru. I know it doesn’t rev to 9000rpm as I already stated twice, but the one in the video can as the owner said that there is not a rev limiter on it. I own an EZ30r and could only imagine what it would sound like revving to 9k

I have to give you a huge thank you for the gc8 content. I've always loved these cars and will in one some day but I have a 94 legacy SS turbo with 71,000 mi and absolutely love it. Keep up the killer content thanks man.

@The King I know it's not, just mine could keep up with them. Was always fun seeing them later in life on their 2nd or 3rd engine rebuild and could still keep with them
I love made up stories on the internet. I used to build N/A subuarus for my old gen legacy. Now I have old cars that are turbo swapped with iwire harness merges. My head isn't up my ass about turbos .But it's cheaper and more fun in the end than trying to make N/A power.

Adding a rear wiper is ALWAYS the first thing I do on the Porsche configurator! Rear wipers area must have!!
I would build an airbox to fit under that air filter to isolate it from the heat and the rest of the engine and shape it to match up with the stock hood scoop so it’s sealed off when the hood is closed acting like a cold air intake.
They actually used to make something like this called a gravel sports intake. Would be fun to recreate.
I was in to 90s Subarus for a long time. This guy embodies the Subaru scene from the mid 2000s - all about the rare parts and offbeat accessories. Love it, this brought me back and is everything I wanted in a car back then.

sounds great, deep six growl and has a nice rip to the tone, I swear I can still hear a turbo swishhh lol. And the paint on this car, wow, its almost mirror like. Great build and a real credit to the owner.
i had my wiring made by iwire around 8 yrs ago and it was very quick and excellent job.
I have the compass in my 00RS coupe. Used it all the time doing navigational rallies! I run the same intake setup, great throttle response. Absolutely addicted to these cars lol. I have a garage full of them... saw it coming years ago and invested. One does not simply aquire enough GC's
Bro that thing is so clean it doesn’t look real in the pictures near the beginning of the vid! It looks like its in gran turismo photo mode or something. Was waiting for the exhaust sound the whole vid and was expecting a more Porsche sound, but still sounds very cool and unique to hear out of a subie
OMG I want a flat 6 swaped Subaru now as my dream car
I once looked into swapping a 4.0 Flat 6 from a Porsche GT3 into a Bugeye WRX. I wondered why nobody ever did it, figured that engine (500HP and revs to 9000) would be amazing in that platform. I just thought it would be a really unique and special car. I had quite a bit of money to put into it, $15-20k for the engine swap. So I start researching the engines, and only then did I realize why nobodyy ever did it..... $30k+ for a nice example, just for the engine. YOu could get a Formula Renault 3.5 engine for less.
Which, regarding the Formula Renault 3.5 engine swap, THAT is my new dream. Not in a Subie though.
Look up possum Bourne page from new Zealand on the h6 3 litre builds. The best h6 was basically from the 2007 ,models.

Amazing build! Making it look "stock" is hard to pull off. And it sounds a lot like a hot 350Z - that throaty 6-cylinder sounds amazing!
One of the few times that more cylinders and NA give more real advantages, and not only sound! Super smooth, instant, linear power delivery and fast revving!
I miss my 98 2.5RS. Black coupe 5spd gold wheels it was such a fun car that never ever got stuck in the snow. I took good care of her and after fourteen years of ownership and 58k miles only I gave it to a friend of mine’s son who was going to Penn State in the fall and they couldn’t afford a car. Ten years later I believe he still has it in his garage. Beautiful build great memories

I daily drive an E92 M3 and rarely feel like driving other peoples cars nowadays. I'm not sure if its the engine sound or the way the car is built, but I would LOVE to drive this one.
When I was like 20 I bought a two door 2.2 Impreza 5 speed at an auction for $600. Was one of my favorite little cars. Was stock but alot of fun in the winter months in the north east. Racing out in the lake when iced over. Great times

I had a 2010 Tribeca. That 3.6l is a good engine. DOHC, timing chains. Never had any head gasket issues. Only problem I had is that small 17 gallon fuel tank.
Rev and exhaust tone sound like the sound in the racing video games. Nice!!
I had a 2010 Legacy with that motor, i never knew they could sound like that. Sounds vaguely like a Skyline but without the turbo noise

The real STI wont be available in the US for another 2 years, but they were lucky to get all their ordinary imprezas as 2 doors, while the rest of the world only got 4 doors.

@@lgz2006 yes no doubt. But the only 2-door sti besides 22b is the Type-r and it was only sold in japan, besides a few softer variations of it in UK and australia. So its kindof rare. All the US cars were 2.5 non-turbos

I already have a flat 6 in my 2.5rs. It's the 3.0 h6. Not the fastest but it's a beautiful conversion and really torquey

My buddy has a straight piped Subaru SVX and this sounds just like it. It's a flat 6 as well, 3.3L. He rally-crosses it and is gonna stage rally soon.

Way slower driving vs what happened with car Paul walker died in.
@@jaredtopilko1313 His ability to not be able to break properly is what killed him with those tires. THat could happen on a highway and someone hits the breaks in front of you in your 1994 Corolla on 10 yo+ ties, it will be the same thing. Too many examples of this. I just used the biggest story of this. I'm not here to educate the ignorant, but stick to your bike if you think running 10 yo tires is a good idea.

In my opinion the above Subaru is the best model ever made, P1 22B TypeR etc etc. Beautiful looking car even today.
