Is MG 5 worth your attention as a potential buyer looking for a great deal on a brand new car with a long warranty and rather attractive looks? I've test driven MG 5 Vibe model today and would love to share my honest impressions with you!
While the difference in quality and everything is obvious, I believe that with a stretch one could definitely see a resemblance of MG5 with some Mercedes models!

I have one where i live in Thailand.had it now about 18 months..love it... no problems so far...done about 19km in it...have same colour..which is only available here as top spec model with sunroof and 360 camera...stands out as most cars here white, black or grey...PRETTY CAR😊
Awesome to hear! Yes it does look like a fun car as long as you don't mind sitting lower (I do!)
Great Value For Money.
Hands down the warranty is what saves this brand and gets buyers interested along with a good after sales reputation 😊
I wouldn't call MG the best, but it's definitely value for money
Great review, I'm just wondering if you plan on testing the essence version? That's the model that I'm looking at getting the most for the bit more power. You mentioned this would be a good second car, would you say this would also be good as your only car? You know I used to be one of these people who are so against Chinese cars that I just never have them a chance and one day a friend who bought an ldv t60 asked me how many of my items at home are from China? That kind of made me think twice and coming from someone who doesn't earn big money and has alot of things at home that take most of that this would be lovely to own.... after all I would be coming from a 2003 mirage 😂
I'll revisit the dealership and see if they have an Essence model to take it for a spin, stay tuned. But in any case, just go test-drive one yourself and compare to similarly priced GWM vehicles (for starters)
Hi Dmitri, been driving essence not bad just a tiny bit of lag, if sudden acceleration is needed other than that smooth drive😊
I need to give Essence a try, thanks.
Great & honest review as always sir! I'm considering getting myself one.
Glad to hear it, apparently Essence model is much better and not much more expensive
@@ValueCarsAU Thank you sir. If I am only looking for an everyday car to work (30mins drive back and forth) do you think it's worth getting the Essence? Personally I don't really care about the paddle shifters nor sunroof, but about the reliability and also quality. What do you suggest sir? Vibe or Essence?
Planning to get this car, please make a in-depth review and also your advice / prediction of selling the car after 3 years of usage
I'll tell you right away - consider something else, such as a Haval Jolion for about the same amount of money currently, but a much more solid vehicle overall (in my humble opinion anyway).
Can the rear seats fold down?
To increase boot space.
Good question, maybe someone else could confirm as I haven't tested it during my test drive, and haven't had a chance to go back for a more extended look
This car called long Wei in China more than 10 years and very bad sales, (pricelow than $20k)but after change of the new brand send into The Australia and Australian love it.😅😅😅
Too early to tell if Australians "love" MG5, it's too new on our shores to tell...
They’re absolutely evveryyywhereeee in brisbane at the moment
They did seem to come out of no where ..
I’m very torn because of the mixed reviews
you definitely got it wrong with longwei. longwei is an independent brand in China n it's almost closed down thanks to the fierce car make competition in China at present. MG was acquired by SAIC Motor Corporation." it is well known in China though.
Good car considering corrolas and Yaris is more then 28k now which is ridiculous... people wonder why folk buy mg when a mazda 2 is 27990
Agreed. People pay more for familiar brands to fight depreciation and feel like they have something not immediately perishable in their hands. But overall value of this is unbeatable vs. the competition.
@@ValueCarsAU ow definitely especially if all you need is a modern getz or early 2000s corrola equivalent, I hate lane keep assist and all that stuff so the mg3 is perfect for me simple no fuss cheap motoring
Thinking of getting one as a second car ! Get around town, small engine etc , we just bought the tank as discussed with you before as our main car! Cheers for review, also looking at Korando , SSANGYONG
I'm always interested why people diversify with their car brands they buy for the family, why not sick too the same brand (if you like it)?
@@ValueCarsAU I like the price 😂
Dmitri,
Over the years I've owned cars that have had engines ranging from 1200cc to 5.2L and decided decades ago not to return to small gutless cars - my minimum was 100Nm. However, times have changed and fuel efficiency is front of mind these days. What the MG5 has is an excellent interior design with plenty of space, good ergonomics, comfortable seats and it may be just what I want. Its a nice place to sit for what could turn out to be several thousands of hours of driving!
As another guy's TH-cam review of the Essence's wet DCT struck it off my shopping list, I like you to please check some aspects of the Vibe to see if it's a contender before I go for a test drive.
I've driven CVT cars before and think they're fine for ordinary urban driving and only drone badly when flooring the pedal. However, a gutless 84Nm and 150kW engine may be a pain for overtaking and climbing hills and so it really depends on how the CVT gearing is tuned.
Would you please test the MG5 Vibe for the following performance aspects:
1. Is there adequate acceleration to keep up with the normal flow from a standing start at the traffic lights without excessive droning?
2. What is the drivetrain's usability like for passing traffic on freeways between 70 to 130kph in auto and manual modes at full throttle?
3. What's the CVT's droning noise like when climbing gradients that were originally built for 19th century horse drawn carts (the standard used for long mountain roads) eg at 60kph?
4. What is the acceleration time from zero to 100kph, nil wind on level ground with only the driver and full fuel onboard?
5. How is the usability of the manual shift function of the CVT eg any hard shifts under full acceleration or declaration or, at high rpm? Does the CVT work well in manual mode and sound like a normal torque converter AT?
6. After 3 hard panic stops using the ABS from 60kph to zero, one after the other, is there any noticeable brake fade?
7. Cheaper cars often have insufficient rebound control in the rear shocks and a light back end will often bounce around excessively over poor road surfaces as a consequence. Does the MG5 exhibit this problem?
8. What is the sway bar control like rounding corners at the limit of comfortable speeds?
A few weeks ago my wife and I sat in the Vibe for 15 mins and then did a thorough visual inspection and liked what we saw. I realise it's got a gutless engine for good fuel economy but it still has to have enough performance to be able to live with for normal driving, both suburban and country. Alternatively, a hybrid is the go. I don't want to buy a shopping trolley that turns out to be the slowest car on the road, no matter how pretty it is on the inside. Thanks for your previous TH-cam review.
Ted
Hi Ed, thanks for a thoughtful writeup and clear, practical questions. Not sure I'll be able to answer all of them - as I'm not a super diligent pro-reviewer, as you've figured out by now - BUT I'll take note of your questions and keep them in mind next time I plan to take MG5 for a longer test drive. There's interest in the car from my audience, so why not revisit it and take a closer look. Cheers mate, stay tuned.
Dmitri,
Thanks very much for getting back to me. If you go to many auto websites these days most of their time is spent on gadget assessment rather that how a car actually drives; its main function. One contributor to an MG5 review made a backhander about Peter Wherrett but he was actually an excellent motoring journo. Just look at some of his Torque TV episodes on TH-cam. He was very popular in the late 70's because of his frankness and condemnation of sub standard vehicles, of which there were heaps at that time. I know, I drove them. If it wasn't for the Japanese and Germans lifting standards of everything auto, we'd still be driving junk because junk is cheap to make. Same in the States, UK and Europe - have limited driving in all 3.
I've now spoken to three ZS owners who were all very happy with their cars and said the performance of the 1.5L atmo around town is fine. That covers my question about the MG's performance from the lights. However, would you please get the 100kph time - by wristwatch is fine. For me it needs to be less than 13 sec.
I like the paddles and torque of the Essence but its wet DCT is sluggish on takeoff, according to reviews by Matt Campbell & Chris Thompson plus, Ford and VW had lots of warranty problems with DCTs. So the lower powered CVT is better suited for urban traffic and the higher powered DCT better for country touring. A simple choice and that's why I'm interested in the Vibe - it's not the price. As those guys said that handling and ride comfort are very good (even with the 17 inch wheels) they've also answered those questions.
The highway overtaking time is important. When one gets stuck behind a slow driver on a country road the need to overtake quickly from 80 to 110kph is paramount to reduce time in the oncoming lane where overtaking opportunities are few - we've all been there with these clowns! So if you could also please get that time and give me your impression of the CVT in manual and auto, that'd be great.
The 7 year warranty covers the company's confidence in serviceability and longevity and the CVT's droning on long mountain climbs might just need to be fixed by turning up the radio volume.
As I said before, when we sat in the car (all seats) we were very impressed by the space, comfort and ergonomics and thought, 'this should be a nice drive.' When I checked MG's range about 18mths ago the backrests of all front seats were too narrow for my back and the side bolsters dug into my lower ribs. I mustn't have been the only one to complain because MG have now made the front seat backrests wider across the whole range here in Oz. A company taking notice of feedback; now Peter Wherrett would be pleased.
Cheers
Dimi, awesome review and appreciate the honesty.
Everyone is talking about how bad/cheap this car is but no one really see the value for money.
Glad you liked it!
I pick up my new mg5 yellow next week, I am trading in my mg 3 excite, mg5 has a lot more room and space
MG5 is hands down better than MG3 mate, congratulations
Does this car have booking
What booking
Is MG backed by Atecco or someone else?
I think so, but who cares?
@@ValueCarsAU You mentioned spare parts availability. I've read a lot of complaints by LDV Van (Atecco) owners being let down by lack of spare parts.
I wonder if MG Australia is going to bring their MG5 EV to Australia? I think it will be a great addition to their existing range.
No idea, but I agree that they should be bringing in new and trendy car models, replacing the rubbish (MG3) that has absolutely zero value or use on our roads.
The best looking MG,very Mercedes looking
If sedan is your thing! 😉
It's look very nice
They should put the turbo engine in the MG3
Absolutely. Or lower its price to $15k to make it somewhat justifiable as a purchase
Handsome car. 👍
I agree - if sedans are your thing!
Would prefer review of the Essence version.
And I'd prefer to be in Bali and drink a beer right now. But here we are.
@@ValueCarsAULOL 🤣
I worry how the dash will last under the Australian sun after a fill years
Just get a dash mat, it will also help reduce the reflection of the sun
@@user-rw6lp3vj5v great idea I keep that in mind
@josh GWM is different quality to SAIC though, but overall I agree that this plastic would probably be "not any worse" than something from a Suzuki or a Honda - why should it be anyway?
Why the car price in Australia is significant high? Australian people are all very rich. In China, this car is only sold at approx $15,000, same model, same configration.😇
Things are changing for Australia with the rising interest rates, etc. People are not spending as much as they used to on cars. Plus, import taxes have always been unfairly high for Australia - I don't think it's directly related to some wealth factor
where's the drive?
Gotta love the entitled viewers, keep it up!
I knew it’s ryde area from the street and grasses 😂
Yes it is
Ryde mg doesn’t exsist anymore
I'm aware of that, the video is old
POV: MG stole the rear design from Mercedes C class
Pretty much, and I love it! 🤣
The whole car is probably a jig saw of other car brands. Copying is a national sport, I vaguely remember the Chinese copied a car so well they even copied it's faults. 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 If you asked someone about the brand MG somewhere in their heads they would probably still think the British still have some input. 😬
Well MG sounds better the Great Wall 🤣😂🤣 it’s a cheap ordinary Chinese car , you get what you pay for. Let’s hope they put Japanese ball bearings in them. 😬
You sound like you either work for MG or don't know much about Chinese cars mate
@@ValueCarsAU I know a lot more than the guy that thinks replacing break rotors in thirty thousand ks is ok. 😬
Yes it makes sense up front but this car at $25k will be the same cost vs a $40k Corolla over 7 years, let me explain. You can buy a Corolla for $40k in 2023 and sell it for $27k in 7 years, losing $13,000. If you buy this MG for $25k and sell it for $8k in 7 years you will lose $17,000.
No way 7 years old Corolla can sell for 33k mate. Unless there is another pandemic! Also, in the next 7 years, EV tech will be much better and more affordable. ICE value will drop even more
@@apocalic Proof is in the listings. I also know this first hand, sold a 11 year old Camry Hybrid (2012) with 240,000km (yes 240,000km) 3 months ago for $22k. I speak with experience.
@@john_barnett A used 2023 Corolla ZR with 5000km is $4000 more than a brand new Corolla ZR. ($44k vs $40k). So a used Corolla right now will actually earn you money after using it for 1 year.
I'm not a believer in beneficial bank loan machinations, but what I will say is how much you'll win or lose due to depreciation of a vehicle. Corolla will retain value better, you'll sell it after 5 years for more than this MG. For sure. Problem remains that not everyone 1) has $40k to pay out right, while they might have $25. and 2). MG is much nicer to drive in general than a Toyota, that's just a simple fact. So not everyone might want to sit in plastic Corolla for 5 years while all they want to do is drive a squeaky brand new and leather-y MG for 2 years and then sell it. There are different ways of looking at it all.
Solid calculation based on one problematic assumption that a buyer will find a 7-year old Corolla with worn out tyres and brakes and no warranty but an asking price of 33k more attractive than a brand new MG5 at 25k drive away and 7 year warranty left. This is their game. They don't need to offer better value than a brand new corolla; they just need to offer better value than a used car from more established brands. And if MG or GWM or whatever comes next proves itself reliable enough (which seems to be the direction they're headed towards), soon your 7-year old Corolla won't be worth the money you assumed they would.
This car just got 0 stars ANCAP safety rating. No value is worth your life.
This review was published way before this rating was announced, you're a bit late to the party.
Not a safe car to drive. 0 Ncap rating
Nope, looks like it's not
