    Brother I have the same exact feelings as you in all these topics. I have been stockpiling my 372 and 390’s for quite awhile now, because I’ve seen where the saw industry is headed for some time. I also agree about not needing a hotrod saw to cut timber. I run them because I do the work myself. A sharp chain and clean smooth work are worth more than all the horsepower in the world. I cut some pretty nice timber on occasion with a hot 372 and a 32” bar. And I like to think I do a fairly clean job. Like you said I ain’t the best out there, but I’m no slouch either. I hope I get to bump into you in my travels someday. I’d enjoy cutting with you.

    Sporty Rick here! I just retired from Woods logging supply 23 years of modifying saws... I hear you!
    I've had good luck with the 661, they had thin cases at first and would crack at the bar studs... And after about 6 mo. the carbs need to be replaced rebuilds usually wont help fuel and crap running threw the solenoid.... I miss the 461 I believe the best saw Stihl put out! The 660 also badass if you don't mind the weight..... I have modified thousands and sent them across the globe... Now takin it easy till its ass kickin time... If we get our country back, I'll be refurbishing and modifying old favorites to turn in private....
    Woods is now owned by Bishop lifting and has a mech. Sebastian which I trained and he caught on quick!

    I have a 390 and a 592. I still pick up the 390 most days. I've never had a problem with it, never had to mess with the carb except for when I opened up the exhaust a bit. I don't even know what I'd do with the 592 if it wasn't running right.
    I do tree removal though, not timber falling. It's less of an issue, since I've always got 2 or 3 more saws in the truck.
    That being said - M-Tronic doesn't work as good as Autotune. I imagine you wouldn't care for either, which I get. But if I had to pick I'd take autotune.

  • @bobaverage
    @bobaverage 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I 100% agree. We mainly run 50cc limbing saws here for most the stuff we do. So I reluctantly got a 550xp when my 357 popped and I needed a saw for the coming week. And it's been fine and almost converted me to accept that the autotune 3 has cleared previous problems. So push came to shove and I wasn't using my 880 anywhere near enough to justify so I sold it and bought a new (but off of eBay private sale) 592xp. It never ran right and even the husky dealer couldn't figure it out. It literally has 1.5hrs on it according to the diagnostics. High compression, good spark but just pisses fuel through it. Rebuilt the carb, no joy. If I want to put a new carb on it it has to be paired with the coil! Can't buy the solenoid you have to buy the whole carb. Just another thing to piss me off. I'm trying to figure out if the 585 normal carb will work, but that's out of my wheelhouse.

    Been watching you two on IG reels for a while and decided to subscribe here. I'm only a casual firewood cutter and the only pro type saw I've ever run even a little was a stock 372 Husky with a 32" bar. This was back in the early 90's and I still remember how much pull it had. I just set it up on the 30" doug fir I was cutting up and it pulled itself through the wood.
    Stihl started going cheap years ago by not using replaceable bearings on the cranks. The O series saws were the best they ever made. I completely agree with your admonitions about thed importance of doing the maintenance and using goog techniques instead of hotrod equipment.

You have a lot more knowledge about the saws than I do but run them all week every week. The 462 has been one of my favorite saws I ever ran. But yeah the 661 is janky and beyond your standard fixes I need help. Thanks for the info and love the channel by the way.

I have the 500I and it was just as you described until I vstacked it and put a Exile Performance muffler front that dumps exshaust to the recoil side and the improvement was instant. Efi is a good idea, but I'm betting theyre trying to squeeze as much fuel efficiency as possible, as why would you not run a carb otherwise? The real benefit of efi, is is runs right at all atmospheric conditions, so if you can't flash a better tune for them, they're not gonna be very useful. I'm a huge 2t efi fan, and would never no back to a carb backcountry snowmobile, or Dirtbike ever again, hopefully stihl can figure out their efi.

    I used to run my saws all day doing line clearance. let me start with my disclaimer, I am a user, not a REAL chainsaw guy. I was like you, pretty hard on my stuff, but within reason. We ran stihl saws… a 201 top handle and a 362. I got out of professional tree work, and into another industry after they fired me while I was on short term disability, but I still do work on the side. Currently I run a 201 top handle, a 361, and I just bought a 660. The more I do on my own on the side, the more I am researching all this stuff, so let me ask you this. If you could have just three saws, what would they be? I don’t know if you climb or trim, because this is only the second video of yours I’ve seen, but three saws… A climbing saw, ground saw, Big saw.
    What would you get and why. Make a video and link it, or write whatever you need to in the reply.

    • @timberfallingcouple
      @timberfallingcouple  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did plenty of climbing work in the past but did not do any pruning, just removals. I did everything with regular saws, because I didn't have enough need to warrant a 201.
      If I had to do climbing a lot more often, I would invest in whatever crap top handle got me by, so that would be one of them and I probably don't give a single damn which top handle I got.
      Next would be a 390xp because it will do anything I need it to do al the way up to 42 inch bar stuff.
      If I had to have a third it would be an 084 beause it was the 7 cube I knew and I loved them.
      If I didn't have to have a 7 cube I'd ditch the 390 and have a couple 395s to do both. Although a 390 does damn well up in the tree with a 24 inch bar on it.

  • @JZ909
    @JZ909 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I certainly don't have the saw knowledge you have and I was a tree climber, so a slightly different industry, but I wasn't impressed by most Stihl saws, especially the new ones.
    The plastic components broke all the time when the saws banged into the tree, which is inevitable if you climb. Husqvarnas, Echos and the older Stihls seem to be built more robustly.
    I wanted to love the 500i, because the power to weight ratio is fantastic, but it's too expensive and the reliability isn't there. I saw two blow up when run hard.
    The 462 actually seems like a decent saw to me. Light weight and doesn't seem to have the reliability issues of the 500i, but I didn't get to use them much before I moved on from that company.
    Personally, I went with a hot rod Echo 7310 as my big saw, and couldn't be happier. It's a little heavy (about a 461), but it has plenty of power, and I know I can run it hard without issues. It will probably fail on me faster than a stock saw, but as a climb saw, that's an acceptable cost. Otherwise, I'm paying for it with my body by carrying a bigger saw to get enough power.

Other that chains and a new bar every so often completely trouble free...I personally dont know anyone with these new saws, but I've heard good and bad....ill stick with my old school reliable carbed saws.

    I love this video because you hit EVERY SINGLE POINT I talk about. People don’t want to admit that those 661s/500 suck. I personally run all 0 series stihls and 2/3 series husqvarnas. The 461 was the best damn upgrade saw ever. I love my 390s I’ve had and I’m happy I have a “new” one and I have to say those 585s are amazing they are a good upgrade from the 390. The 3 series gets shit on for the screws backing out and small issues but the same people I find are in denial about the 661 solenoid issues. I love all saws but the 390/395 and 066 were and forever will be the best true timber cutting saws out there the new ones can’t compare. But hey that’s what some guy on the internet says but I’ve seen a lot and worked on a lot. But great video brother and you and Sadie are both badass cutters I’d love to meet and cut with some day

      That's a piece of equipment that is worth getting to know, if you meet a piece of hardwood that overwise would prove itself to be exceptionally tough and mean. From a saw person's perspective (I'm not talking about large pines or softwood, I'm talking stuff that is like a boxer with a chin made of stone). You're not going up against that timber with anything less than your best, as far as .058 full cisel goes, in whatever brand that you have faith in. I did get out of the last unused Husky 372 that was available. And I've settled now on a semi chisel archer, with a .058 Husqvarna 24 inch heavy duty type of bar that I run it with. Just to process and saw up my hardwoods for fencing end poles. Because the 372 is a saw the veterans in logging grew up with, and I wanted to get to know that tool. But when a tree is still vertical, and it will laugh back at you if you touch it with most saws. That kind of hardwood. I don't mess around, the 585 has been solid for me. And for softwood felling, it's equally reliable. I tended to use the 585 with semi chisel on 28 inch Husqvarna bars for the softwood, and I tend to drift down to 24 inch Husky or Oregon bars for hardwood.

    • @academicmailbox7798
      @academicmailbox7798 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I didn't have a 24 inch Husqvarna bar at the time I got the 585 this year for it. So I use a 24 inch Oregon lighter bar. Since that I added a couple of heavier duty 24 inch Husqvarna bars to my selection (those things aren't inexpensive I learned either). But I'm delighted that I did. As I said for horizontal log processing and shaping with the 372 saw, that heavy Husqvarna 24 inch bar is working out so far. And I've used a lot of different 20 inch bars for a while now. The Oregon 20 inch semi chisel chain I got not long ago makes real nice chips when cutting hardwood. However, having used the 24 inch with some Archer semi chisel lately, except for smaller wood, I think I'm done with 3/8 inch pitch chains and bars in the 20 inch dimension. I always say that though, and something comes up, typically tree care work. Where I find all of my larger saws getting 20 inch bars and chains on them (I think it is that I hand file, and except for my own personal use I'm not willing to spend a day filing a selection of 24 or 28 inch chain). Just for tree care work outside.

    My first saw was a 1988 Husqvarna 281XP, and it wouldn't die. I ran it 6 hours a day for 14 months falling timber in Oregon. Then bought a Stihl O64 and made the 281 my back up. The 281 did vibrate a lot and the O64 was smoother and well balanced. But I only got 11 or 12 months before it blew, so I used the Husky while it got rebuilt. I cut for 4 years, using 064s, then joined the Coast Guard to fly on rescue helicopters, and sold the Husky to my father in law. He used that saw a fair amount cutting firewood, and 3 years later, I got out of the Coast Guard and went to work falling timber for him, with that same 281 still on the same piston! He ran the cat, and I cut and sat chokers. The oiler finally went out and the shop loaned me a 394XP while they ordered the part. That saw was so smooth and much lower on vibration, plus more power, so we bought it and made the 281XP the landing saw. And it got used bumping knots on the landing for the next few years. I'm about to buy a new saw. What would you suggest for a 36" bar? 390, or 592 perhaps?

    • @timberfallingcouple
      @timberfallingcouple  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@timberfallingcouple Thanks, I appreciate that. The 592 is similar weight to the 390, and more power, but I was wondering if the older, less powerful 39O might be the more tried and tested option. And, in most cases, you don’t get a more powerful saw at the same weight without trading something. Usually reliability. Like you, I never hot rodded my saws. I like reliability over sheer power, and I am a firm believer that a sharp chain is more important. A well ground chain off a Simington makes way more difference than 500 more rpm.

    • @timberfallingcouple
      @timberfallingcouple  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well another thing to note is that if you have good torque, they make 8 tooth sprockets. And I run them, and they run well with a sharp chain.
      I can't speak to a 592 because I've never run them. I don't know how they do. I know if I was scared a 390 wouldn't have enough power, I'd buy a 395, put an 8 tooth sprocket on it and literally want for nothing.
      If I wanted a light fast saw I'd get a 390 or a 372 even and have a nice fast l8ght saw.
      I don't personally have any use for a 460/461/500i/372 sized saw at this stage in my career, but if I did, 461 or 372 is where I would go.
      I consider a 390 to be a perfectly equal, perhaps even more capable analog to a 660.
      And I consider a 395 to be more analogous to an 056 or 2100, 6 cube saw than a 5.5 cube saw.
      Just my experience. Your mileage may vary.
      I also have found that if you keep your plastics snug and replace plastic parts and keep blue loctite on your plastics screws, a 395 is absolutely without a doubt the longest lasting saw made in the last 30 years. 660/066 being a close second. Then 390xp

    • @twowheelsdown2002
      @twowheelsdown2002 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@timberfallingcouple My 281XP only made 5.7 hp, and my 064 only 6.3, and I dropped plenty of 4, 5, and 6 foot trees with both of them, so I don't think I would need much more power than that. And they were both quite manageable limbing with a 36" bar. A 390 at 6.5 hp is more powerful than both of those at a nearly identical weight to the 064, so it would probably be my best overall option for both falling and limbing. The 592 is only slightly heavier, but I kind of wonder about the reliability of a much newer model when the 390 has been around nearly 20 years. The 390 is so close in weight and power to the 064, and that was a great all around saw for me. And that old Husky 281 amazed the shit out of me just how long it ran, so maybe the 390 might be right in the sweet spot.

    • @twowheelsdown2002
      @twowheelsdown2002 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@timberfallingcouple Well, I just pulled the trigger on a 390XP. It was a tough choice between it and the 592XP. They had the 390 but I waited for them to get the 592 in and handle them both side by side. The 390 felt lighter. Husky lists the 592 as only 0.2 pounds heavier, but I could feel a noticeable difference with each in hand. I saw some channel where a guy weighed them both, and he said the 390 was half a pound heavier. Well maybe my arm is out of calibration, but the 592 felt a good pound heavier. And I also like that the 390 is tried and proven and simpler technology. As well as a couple hundred dollars cheaper. My 281 did ok at 5.7hp with a 36" bar, as did my 064 at 6.3hp and the 390 makes 6.5hp. Yeah, the 592 makes more power, but I am more about reliability, and a sharp chain versus horsepower. I got it set up with a Husky 36" light bar, and Oregon full chisel, full comp chain. Now I have a lot of wood to cut, and down the road I will be getting a Simington grinder again.

    Stupid engineering this electronic carburetors junk . Same goes for Husqvarna auto tune. Saws will go into default or compensate mode when there is an airleak. Yup it will blow your engine in short order without warning. They want to try and reduce emissions as much as possible. It's just a gimmick in the end. Husqvarna auto tune is a nightmare. The diagnosis software update tool needs to be linked to the Husqvarna site to get access in troubleshooting solenoid valves or sensors on your saw. Plus the module harness needs to be attached to the diagnostic tool and then a laptop to gain access to the history of the saw and last calibrations. Really stupid just for a saw and you need to be a Husqvarna dealer to gain access to the mothership Husqvarna site. Waste of time. Conventional carburetor adjustments were and are always better.
