Timberfalling is actually very hard work and lacking in glory.

  • Cutting the bottom along creek ribbon.
    According to my calculations, it would cost about 6000 dollars to haul a tethered buncher and anchor in here. And it would cost about 4000 dollars to bring a Yoder in here.
    What we are doing instead, is very dangerous, shipping every stem up the hill to the flat where a shovel can grab it. But at a cost of three day's wage for two men, that comes up to significantly less than either of the alternatives, so we take our time and do it safely.
    Enjoy the more boring parts of our job. Heavy wedging and no cuts to the exciting part.

    Yes what you said is true. You have to love it. And you will either love it or hate it. Or even love it and hate it. But if it’s in your blood, then it’s in your blood. And as the Bible says, life is in the blood.
    Thats why having good felling buddies/friends and being close to them is important as well as having the best hottest saws possible, along with the best equipment so to not only make it a bit easier but a little more fun.
    Stay safe brother and have fun. This work keeps you not only fit but strong

    Those are tough and potentially dangerous days when they want everything laid uphill, especially if everything wants to go downhill. I worked an area that was very steep with a flat plateau above. They wanted everything uphill toward that plateau, and a lot of trees reached past the breakover. Some trees just broke at the breakover, and others lifted the butt twenty feet in the air and sideways. You had to have a good escape path and when they started to go, just give it a bit more on the back cut, and then get out of dodge! Go like hell and concentrate on not tripping! It was almost better if you had to wedge, because you could set the saw aside in a safe spot, and not have to worry about taking off with it in hand or having a good place to ditch it as you exited.

    I’ll tell you anyone that has ever fell timber for a living it is one of the hardest jobs you’ll ever do and there’s a lot of skill that goes into it. If you have never done it you will not understand. That’s some Good wedging! Stay safe.

    Lotta work ! Do use do any residential work ? Up here in WNY I gotta purty good gig going felling , Buckin and splitting into firewood - dead ash trees that have been decimated by the emerald ash bore beetle 🪲 (EAB) - can pay for saw with 2 days wage 😉

    • @timberfallingcouple
      @timberfallingcouple  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      we occasionally do some residential or commercial "property work" we occasionally cut trees near buildings or power lines and are insured to do so. but it is rare, and i make my wages to cut them down so they can sell the logs or make the firewood and make the wages back and i dont have to Dick with a splitting maul

      @@timberfallingcouple I’d love to be able to fell timber like that , we just don’t really have anything to compare up here in WNY straight up like a popsicle… Dead ash processing from standing tree to firewood ain’t a bad gig - u make good $ IF ya don’t mind bustin your Fanny a bit. On a single tree or less than say 2-3face cord we use axes 🪓 or mauls , more than that I have a kinetic splitter I bring to the job and it just EATS like a mofo. Outside and it makes for good exercise - I guess it’s either in your blood or it isn’t … best regards and merry Xmas 🎄
