  • I have so many miscellaneous problems with this movie, and I decided to compile 10 of them here.
I don’t know why I pick on this movie so much. I think it might be because the animated version is one of my favorite movies ever, so I think I’m defensive.
I’m fully aware this video is petty and useless.

That whole comparison about the beast's horns facing backwards like a goat making him less intimidating, as opposed to the smaller but front-facing bison horns making him more so, that's a very clever observation. I never thought of that. And you're absolutely right, the forward-facing bison horns are actually more intimidating. Ironically, the backward-facing goat horns appear to be the design that most other mediums outside of Disney tend to go with -- the Zenescope comics, Don Bluth's original design from back in the 80s, etc.

I think the Enchantress being more prominent in this is a response to the internet debates as to whether or not she is evil but I think it just takes away from the mysteriousness of her. The fact that we never saw her outside of the stained glass windows in the original film makes her more ambiguous and powerful. Not only that, but if they were trying to make Belle a stronger character, why take away her moment of with the Beast and let the Enchantress give the final push to have the spell broken?

Also, can we talk about how they "fixed" the "timeline mistake" and created a different plot hole entirely? People in the castle are not getting older but their loved ones outside of the castle are, because only their memories were affected by the curse... Just why? Who wrote this please?!

YES YES YES I LOVE YOU FOR THIS! Giving the "I love her" line to Mrs. Potts was the nail in the coffin for me - like you're gonna take what might be the most important line in the whole story - the literal culmination of everything we've seen them go through - and give it to another character??? Also totally with you on all those little moments they took away from the Beast. He lost so much of what made him endearing to the audience, so for example, when he and Belle had their little snowball fight scene, it didn't feel awkward in a cute, comical way, it felt awkward because they had zero connection. Thank you for this amazing breakdown!

Belle knowing that the Beast is just a normal guy under a curse takes away a lot from their relationship. "Love conquers all" means very little if you know that the obstacles will go away soon. :/ The only thing I liked about this movie is that in my native language one of my favourite local musical theatre actors dubbed Gaston. And while I think he would have been better for the Prince, and he was also autotuned to resemble Luke Evans's singing more, at least I have a bunch of funny voice lines with him :D

A MAJOR issue i had with this movie was how the town treated Belle's habit of reading.
Theres a lot of historical analysis that places the timeframe of Beauty and the Beast not too far before the French Revolution. During this time period, it was normal for women to read, fashion magazines were very popular (iirc, rhe original fairy tale actually first appeared in one of these magazines)
So, in the original, the town is like "oh look at Belle, she has her nose in a book and her head in the clouds. She's a bit odd, we don't get it. She's so much more into that book than the real world, how silly tee hee~"
In the live action the town is like "A woman? Reading? How disgusting! Hurr durr durr, women don't read, women do housework without any assistance. Using tools is bad, reading is bad! Look at Belle, what a freak."
That change in tone is.. not good

What really bothered me about them making the townspeople hate Belle so much is that they kept the opening musical number the exact same for... some reason??
Like one minute they're all singing, "Look there she goes the girl that's strange but *special!* " and the next minute they treat her like the town pariah. It's pure tonal whiplash lol

  • @ParadoxFreak

For me it’s the Evil Enchantress, I mean Enchantress, she is a complete witch in this. First, they could have shown the Prince being vain, narcissistic, greedy, etc and not just telling us - would have added 5-10 minutes tops. Second, she not only curses the Prince but also everyone around because magic? She then proceeds to add that he must find true love to break the curse but also wipes the memories of the townsfolk to forget there was ever a castle, monarch, and their own loved ones. Also, she makes it almost impossible to find the castle other than by mistake of getting lost. How is he suppose to have even a chance at breaking the curse with all these contradictions? She might as well ended his life right there. It’s a perfect example of the writers trying to overcorrect the mistakes of the past film.

Lefou standing up to Gaston could have worked when he sees the way Belle talks about the Beast, realizing she's fallen for him. Before that, when Gaston makes his plan to force Belle to marry him, Lefou could try to convince him to do things differently - Maurice didn't harm him and Belle would never love him. He realizes based on Gastons response that Gaston doesn't love Belle, but sees her just as a trophy wife.
So Lefou is the one who frees Belle and Maurice (Gaston might have told them to guard them to keep them from escaping) - and Lefou uses one of Belles actual inventions in the fight. He tries to stand up to Gaston, telling him to stop before he does something he'll regret. Gaston knocks him out, but by the time the castle is back to normal, Lefou wakes up.
Redemption arc for the original gremlin - also a potential reprise song of "Gaston", where he makes the townspeople realize Gaston isn't great and that they're partially to blame.
Now, for this to work, Belle would need to be an actual inventor, Maurice would be nice to Gaston (that it's Belles choice who she marries, not Maurices) - and the town likes Gaston before and is encouraging him like in the og.

Belle really didn't need to be more feminist, in this movie. Most of that is just Emma Watson's influence. While I have nothing against Ms. Watson, or her acting, I hate that the filmmakers let her intervene as much as she did. The original version of Belle is intelligent, yet also strong, gentle, and kind. The original version of the Beast is allowed to evolve more. The remake version of Belle is intelligent, and strong, but that's about it. And the Beast is too cold. How are we expected to believe that they're in love?!

I like when Potts says the line for Beast in the musical because she says it differently. "Because he finally understands what love is." And it's franed by a bunch of discussion about how he should tell her and when he actually feels it's the right moment. Potts speaking for him there is done because she is the figure of motherly love in the show and so she understands that kind of sacrificial unconditional love like nobody else in the castle. It directly develops the relationship between the servants and Beast in the musical. But in the live action, it's like they took Mrs Potts delivery from the musical and combined it with Beast's line from the animated and made a mess. It's unfortunate.

  • @EditorOfSL
    @EditorOfSL 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

The entire cast were wrong for this (with the possible exception of Kevin Kline) when you compare them to the cast from the original. Gaston was originally played by an OPERA singer for God’s sake - Luke Evan’s can’t compete with that! Emma Watson was bland, boring and couldn’t sing - in the end they made her too much like Hermione Granger for my liking, and I can’t stand Hermione in the films. Dan Stevens is okay but not very convincing as a beast. Emma Thompson and Ian McKellen are good in their own right but as replacements for Angela Lansbury and David Ogden Steirs? Nope! And why they thought Ewan McGregor was a good substitute for Jerry Orbach I’ll never know!
Rant over, the other thing I hate in this film is when Belle attempts to escape right after promising the Beast she’ll stay. The original film proves that Belle could have escaped whenever she wanted but CHOSE to stay because to her a promise is something that shouldn’t be broken (she admits that in The Enchanted Christmas) - this proves she’s a character with morals. In this film, I guess the filmmakers thought it would make Belle seem like a stronger character but it just shows that she’s flaky. Just like “inventing” a washing machine so she can read instead of doing her chores just makes her look lazy and having her constantly reading even when she’s eating with the Beast makes her look rude.

    Wow. WOW.
This video made me see even more errors and mistakes in this movie than I already saw.
Beast's design is more disappointing than I realized. The observation on the horns is so on point (no pun intended btw) I don't care if the goat-like horns are the most common interpretation for the character or whatever. This is supposed to be DISNEY'S interpretation, which the original nailed, and this reimagining ruined it. Not to mention I absolutely deeply agree with the points about taking away so much and so many details about scenes and dialogue from the Beast. I almost feel rage about giving the line about being in love with Belle to Mrs. Potts; but since this versions of Belle and Beast didn't convince me they loved each other, I can't really say I'm super mad... Which of course doesn't make matters any better.
Stuff to notice is that the animated version is a character *full of soul* whereas this cgi caricature is soulless from every angle you look at it. In the animated movie right after the end credits there's the sweet homage to Howard Ashman (may he rest in peace) that mentions he gave a mermaid her voice (The Little Mermaid) and a beast HIS SOUL. Where is that soul in this live action?! The entire live action adaptation lacks soul and that's detrimental, not to mention unforgivable. At least to me.
Honestly, this remake just makes everything and everyone unlikable. And I know that after thinking about all of the stuff the live action does wrong, I desperately need to go watch the original for the 10000th time. Because nothing can top that beautiful masterpiece of a movie.
Also, I hate the "details" of stuff like the enchantress being in the middle of the final scene because I'm sure it was made that way to "answer" to people making dumbass questions that don't need answer for years about is the character being evil or not. And just so many other details do this in the live action. Cogsworth in the oginal has the best line about all this: *If it's not baroque, don't fix it.*
    Good video👍

The Enchantress needed to stay mysterious--she's clearly fae and capricious. Yes, the Prince was cruel and inhospitable, but the punishment she bestows upon him and everyone around him does not fit the crime--but she doesn't care about that. She was slighted, and so that was justification enough to ruin everyone's lives. She's not masquerading as a beggar woman in the nearby village for ten years just to check in on the Prince's character development. If she was concerned about teaching lessons to people who deserve it--WHY ON EARTH WOULD SHE LET GASTON HAVE A FREE PASS? Get out of our transformation scene--you don't deserve to be there. You wrote that Prince off as being unable to change and undeserving--but he proved you wrong. He broke your curse, and you have no more power over him. Let the Prince have his gosh darn character development!

The one thing they got right was the music direction.
If the cast were as bad as Disney seemed to think which based on some of the rehearsal footage I’ve seen which has some of the casts natural singing voices heard. They weren’t bad at all in my opinion. But what with all the tune and pitch corrections they added and the filters it was impossible to tell how good they were. Just hire trained singers dub them Disney.
However I thought it had a perfect blend of both new and old. How the new score had familiar elements from the original animation score. Plus I liked how some of the classic songs had their lyrics altered by inserting unused lyrics from the original movie.
What let it down was the fact that they auto tuned the hell out of it so it was hard to tell if the cast could actually sing or not. Overall the movie had potential but they just tried to fix what wasn’t broken instead of drawing from the strengths of the original and expanding on that to make the story even stronger.

Yes, yes and yes!! I had the exact same thoughts about this abomination, especially about the "I love you" line that the Beast didn't say, and his design (the horns;everything). I would also add the auto tune they put on Dan Stevens for the whole movie, I can't listen to any of his dialogue without cringing. It's weird how they wanted to fix the "Stockholm Syndrome" from this story by making the Beast so unlikable the whole way through, yuck.

I never noticed the point about how static the Beast's fur is before. Even weirder that happened when you consider that they created software specifically for hair when they made Tangled in 2010. The technology existed, why wouldn't they use it?
The phrase 'unexpected intruder' always bothered me too; apart from the points you made, are they really an intruder if they're expected?

  • @nager1997
    @nager1997 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

In my opinion the remakes arnt that bad just badly thought out. They do have their merits. Another thing I liked about this remake was the ending showing the consequences and effects on the sevants. With the original score playing over it. I also liked how they extended the transformation score because I loved that score in the original and I was excited at the fact they extended it in the remake. And getting more of Ashmans lyrics at the very end was brilliant. I just loved how they didn’t just do the classic songs like the original but added lyrics and extended the backing music and gave the music a boost in the way the instruments were used, if one ignores the filters the songs are fantastically done and the new songs are just as good.
In all beauty and the beast was in my opinion one of the better remakes. Not perfect and there are a lot of flaws but it’s one I’ve watched over and over again.
Disney are trying to make lightning strike twice and it’s impossible to recapture the magic that a animated environment gives. So I find it best to just take the remakes with a pinch of salt.
At the end of the day it’s never the casts fault because they are only doing what they are scripted and directed to do by Disney and Disney unfortunately will always have final say on how the film turns out.
Filters and auto and pitch correction included.

In this movie isa few moments who they change a bit relactionship between Beast and Belle which i like it but for now I told just about most important and I hope I won't critise for that, When the Belle for the first time go into the castle, find the prison tower and her father ask beast for last conversaction with Maurice. Before they separated and he agree. And they talk saying goodbye to each othen and at last the man leave the tower .For me it was so much better than when we saw in the animaction that beast not only scares Belle's father and trap him into cold, high ,dark dungeon despite even their servants try to explain him that Maurice was only old man,who get sick a bit, cold, and lost in the woods losing his horse,He just look at him and said ,,You are stranger, you not allowed to being here and watch the beast!" and even after he told Belle to relace him he just thought him out into some kind of chimney? Or whatever it was and shout"She's no longer your concern!". After something like that, I'm not surprised that the girl went off on him. I would even do more. I would try to beat him up or at least punch him in the face. Well, people, how can you do that?! First, you imprison an innocent, sick old man, even though he did nothing wrong and just wanted to spend the night somewhere, he can warm himself up at the same time, and when it turns out that he is an even more noble man than it seemed at first, you threaten him with life imprisonment and separation from his family. only family and at the end you throw her out the door, saying that she no longer has a daughter. After all, this is real brutality! Really. That's why in this respect, I'm very glad that they changed it in the movie. Thanks to this, they gave him a little more heart right away. I'm also glad that in the movie, in one scene, the Beast apologizes to Bella for what he did to her father. It's nothing, and apparently in the animation it was also visible that he felt some regret about what he had done, but he never said it openly. Which for me was a huge mistake. And remorse is sometimes much too little for me to be forgiven. Especially something like that..

The funny thing is while you can tell the direction of the film was to prop up Belle to a point of exaggeration that she lost the subtle qualities that made her appreciated in the first place. Then comparing that to the robbing of Beast’s development, the Beast ironically ended up being more likable, even though we didn’t witness his character growth as much as we should have.
The worst part is there’s zero chemistry between the two, very little humility which is important for both characters to learn to connect to each other! It’s a part of the lyrics of the song Beauty and the Beast, “Barely even friends, Then somebody bends, Unexpectedly,” and “Bittersweet and strange, Finding you can change, Learning you were wrong.” Etc. Both ended up being pretty prideful throughout the movie, it resulted in the lack of dynamic to allow them to grow together that was essential to the story, the main point of their live story.
