  • These two dance scenes get compared a lot, and I wanted to contribute my opinion. Cinderella (2015) did a great job but Beauty and the Beast (2017) did not. Topics I go over include cinematography, choreography, acting, lighting, the dresses, etc.

    i still don't get it why Belle had to go on horseback wearing the ball gown. it made no sense, no one in the village (not even her father!) expressed any surprise at what she was wearing. and then there was that weird strip moment when she headed back to the castle. the logical thing was for her to change into her normal dress before leaving the castle, like she did in the animated film.

    • @AnywayJenniferSim
      @AnywayJenniferSim  ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I completely agree. I think it’s ridiculous she went back to the village in her ball dress.

      @@AnywayJenniferSim Belle changing out of her ball gown would make her seem less serious about her father's wellbeing. And seeing that yellow dot fade away in the distance is more impactful. Yellow is the color of joy, so Beast is literally watching his joy going away.

    I think that the dance scene in Cinderella was bold, bright, and beautiful. I love how her gown just flows, while she dances, and how excited she and Kit are to see each other. When he says that he will lead her through their first dance, she knows that she can trust him, and he goes out of his way to make her feel comfortable. In Beauty and the Beast, however, a lot of it just feels like it's going through the motions of the animated movie. In the animated movie, you can feel the romance developing between the characters. During dinner, she's the one who encourages him to dance with her. Her gown is amazing, and watching her cozy up next to him is adorable! Also, when he's about to dance with her for the first time, he's awkward and shy, but then she makes him feel comfortable, when she snuggles up next to him. In the remake, however, a lot of it just feels forced. You can't really see their facial expressions, but during those rare instances when they do have close-ups of their faces, it looks really uncomfortable to watch.

    The problem with the beauty and the beast Dance is also the lighting. In the animated version the lighting is very glowy its very intimate it's very romantic you can clearly see the faces of the characters and the surrounding areas of the castle and that makes it more enjoyable. In live action you can barely see anything because the lighting looks hollow there's not that much light for us to process the character's faces. When the candlesticks dim it signals the end of the dance we're finally able to process the emotions with the characters as they go to the balcony. It's a simple visual q that something is starting to change, we're getting to the moment where they really do love each other but they can't say it yet. In the live action you can barely see anything and that you can't see the beast's face and you can't see Emma Watsons that well. So all the emotion is lost, it feels hollow like they're just dancing for the hell of it and not dancing because they really want to. It feels too much like a reenactment and not a steady progression. And there is too much dead spagain without the lighting effects The scene feels hollow every time I look at it I'm looking at the background because the characters aren't lighting up the room.

    • @bakudekuqueen

      I want to add something more to this because I've been reading all the other comments and I love the likes they're awesome but I also want to point out how the scene went in the animated version. In the animated version beast is very shy and belle is taking the lead in the dance because he is too shy. Again we get this very intimate moment where they're actually very comfortable it's the amaldination of all their time spent together and the actual difference in their relationship. In the animated version there is clearly a progression which can be dumbed down to 3 stages. The first stage is obvious it is the beginning of their relationship and they hate each other, Belle is the prisoner and Beast is well the Beast. In the second stage we can see that something is changing they're no longer the same people but they still haven't gone to the point of love yet. Third stage which is the dance stage it is the biggest moment, It is the physical and emotional ending to our story arc before all the other characters get involved. they clearly do love with each other but they can't say anything because the movie is not over and too they still don't understand how to say they love each other. The dance is where their feelings come out even if they're not actually saying it. We as the audience are clearly swept up in its rhythm And the feelings linked to the rhythm. The intimate and closeness that has been building which is important because In the live action we get none of that. As The candlesticks dim It is Clear view to the audience that their feelings coming to the surface
      In the Live action we can't see that like I said in my previous comment the Lighting is horrible and the amount of dead space really makes it worse. Because the shots are so dim your eye is naturally looking at something else we don't get the glow of the candlesticks we don't get that intimate warmth because it feels like they're not dancing It feels like they're just going through the motions. It Painfully feels like a reenactment there's no progression they're just dancing Because that's the next scene that has to come on. Hurts because all the romantic and intimate feelings are no longer there from Emma Watson's face and especially the beasts you can't see anything it's like there's Stone face there is no emotion.

    I'll never forget the start of the dancing scene at the beginning of the animated movie. How Belle lifts the beast's hand to her hip, and he's swallowing, and her leading him to the dance floor, although he had asked for the dance, she was leading him into this gentle interaction that was so new for him. His happiness when he realized that he could dance as a beast as well as a prince. The scene in the live action was so ... sterile. And in my opinion, they took away from Belle's true strength and kindness by making it like that.

  • @emmam4123

    In Cinderella, she and the prince have *that face,* my mom calls it the "Stupid face", the one when you put when you are in love. It's so cute.😊
    In the Beauty and the Beast, both of them have a strait face. Maybe for the poster could have work, but I don't now. In the animated version, Belle was so happy and Beast was so shy, it was cute.

    @rayofsunshine8743 2 ปีที่แล้ว +63

    Yeah, I totally agree with your thoughts on the dancing in both films.
    The main thing about the dance of romance trope is the enjoyment of physical closeness and basically enjoying each other's company. Ella and Kit were physically close yet were also enjoying to be with each other and fall even more in love with each other. With Belle and Beast, well, I guess they were physically close but I feel like they don't want to be here with each other, and the romance didn't really progress that much

    Personally I would have went in a different direction of Belle’s dress. Scratch out the yellow, make it gold and cream. Sorry Emma, this dress required to be a corset dress. As for the skirt, I would have had a split skirt opening to a pleated cream skirt underneath. To top it off, have Roses made of fabric be the details to the edge of the skirt and perhaps a center piece in the middle of the bosom, easier to see than the gold details we only saw just in one part of one scene. And I would have at least kept the off the shoulders look, if not that, poor off the shoulders would have been fine to avoid a replica of Cinderella’s previous dress. I also thing just a little more volume to the hair could have helped too, I did like the hair piece, but the hair just needs a smidge of volume as it was too modern.
    Imo this direction would have been more of a target to the French rococo fashion while having an aesthetic that modern women would have enjoyed yet a small nod to the 1991 style. It would elevate Belle’s chance to live in that fairytale she always read about and it would have matched the castle’s grandness.

      I've seen beautiful fanarts of what Belle's Dress could have been like in Live Action... Emma's choice is strange since I've already seen images of her in much prettier clothes at Parties. Having a prettier Dress wouldn't stop her from being the strong Character she wanted her Belle to be. I would have made the Dress sleeveless and actually more Gold than Yellow as it would match more with the aesthetic color of the Film.

    How do you feel about the digitally altered color of Cinderella’s dress? I get that a bright cerulean gown looks more striking in the scene, but I think the actual iridescent, multi-layered, periwinkle-ish color is so much prettier.

    I hate Belle's hairstyle in the live action, but that's because I hate how her hair is often shown in that type of half up half down in general. It's more of a bun with a tail sorta in the original and I like that because it draws on some historical hairstyles, though not necessarily of the rococo time period. I was kinda sad it was over and instantly wanted to watch it again. It's the only disney live action remake that I actually *own* on blu-ray.

    The drooping downward ruffles on the yellow dress make Emma's Belle ( or rather just Emma because she was playing herself) look sad and sanguine. Like a wilting flower. The ruffles should be hanging in pretty tapestry style curls and you could do that without wearing a corset. Its almost like the designer hated their job.

    I tried, I really did, I watched the full clip of the Beauty and the Beast (2017) dance and tried to find something to love. All I came back with was extra things to hate. The song which by the way was one of my top favorite Disney songs (both the original and the Celine/Peabo remix) was so grating, so many unnecessary pauses and bad rhythm that just took me out of the visuals. Emma is the one taking the lead during the dance and my Hermione vibes were flaring which is not what I wanted to think about when I was watching this movie. Plus something I realized; If you were to cut out the cut-aways ( Mrs. Potts and Chip, Lumiere and Cogsworth, the visuals of the ball room) during the Beauty and the Beast dance scene and focus only on the parts where you can see the characters dancing the scene would be even shorter.

    In movies that integrate CGI characters especially, they try to hide mistakes and any uncanniness by using dim lighting. Understanding and replicating how light works and bounces off certain objects is a very hard thing to do, so it’s easier and more cost effective to keep the lighting to a minimum. Also why the Beast hardly ever emotes.

It would have taken an amazing actress with great imagination to create the falling-in-love-vibes in those circumstances. The inexpressive CGI Beast is terrible. For an actress who has a "limited acting range" - Emma Watson has done very well for herself. Why is the movie called Beauty & the Beast? If we were supposed to see more of Dan Stephens - should he be playing a different role? Have you tried dancing in the beasts costume? Whoever it was should be applauded. Heard / read somewhere that Dan Stephens actually did get in the costume because it took a while to get used to walking on the beasts feet. The moral of the story and the reason the beast became the beast was to be a better person. What was he supposed to be - happy, smiling all the time & life's wonderful? This is a fairy tale movie - the story line has the beast learned his lesson, fell in love & "the happy ever after" ending.

    Am I the only one who doesn’t like Cinderella’s dress? I mean don’t get me wrong it’s way better than Emma’s dress (I’m not calling it Belles dress because it’s not Belle) but I still have a lot of issues with Cinderella’s. I just think it’s a bit too over the top for me because I cannot take it seriously. It reminds me too much of Giselle’s dress from enchanted but that was made for comedic purposes with the huge skirt and puffy sleeves. Yes Cinderella’s hasn’t got the puffy sleeves but the skirt is still huge and she has butterflies around the collar (I’m not great with dress terminology). I wasn’t too much of a fan of the underskirt and since in the dance we see it a lot it distracted me too. To be honest I think they felt they had to go over the top because the dress she wears throughout the majority of the movie is also blue and too pretty which is another huge problem I have with the costumes. Honestly my favourite live action Cinderella dresses are Brandy’s and once upon a time’s because they had a great balance of being elegant, not too over the top but it was in the little details that made them stand out and gorgeous.
    Fair enough that you love it but just wanted to share my personal issues with the dress especially since I seem to be the only one.

      The good thing tho, is that the whole cast has over the top and unrealistic dresses... So inside that world it doesn't look too out of place. Cinderella was the origin for Bridgerton, or whatever it is called. Seems that they like using acrylic fabrics to cut corners in the costume budget. And that I think was a trend that Cinderella cemented and made it an acceptable cannon

      My favourite live action for Cinderella is the one with Drew Barrymore. I'm sorry I cannot remember the name, but I am a Spanish speaker, so the names of movies are different

      Ever After. It’s one of my favorites too!

      Your thoughts are totally valid. Her dress is insanely huge. But where I feel the difference between her and Giselle are is in Enchanted her dress is contrasted by reality, so it looks ridiculous (in a fun way). But in Cinderella the whole world is over-the-top so it all feels cohesive to me. But I totally see where your coming from. I, personally, love the fairytale feel of the costumes though.

    What's truly amazing is the sad fact you made this commentary in the first place - and received so many viewers. Came across this site by accident - wouldn't give you 1 cent for your opinions - never mind 2. Everyone is entitled to their opinion on a subject but Dance Scene Comparisons between Cinderella & Beauty & the Beast (live actions) - why do you think you're one to talk about it? If you're such an expert on movies - why aren't you producing them - then you could address your issues - the movies would be perfect & you'd have nothing to talk about 😂😂😂. It's a huge risk in every department of film making to turn a timeless classic film like Cinderella into a live action film just as it was when Disney first made it. Everyone knows what the films are about whether one would admit it or not - no need for a re-cap at the beginning. The creativity is amazing. You try making those dresses, dancing in them or if you were the beast under that costume. The 2 storylines are so different no matter what category in film making you pick to debate. When one goes for a job - first impressions matter - won't be subscribing to this channel - no chemistry between viewer & presenter ...

    Emma Watson is overrated. Where is the femininity and kindness of belle ?
