  • Rarely is there a movie that is ALL bad. 2017 BatB does have some things I actually like. I’m normally very harsh on this movie, and I wanted to make a positive video to try and balance the negative a little bit.

The Beast's song is my favorite part of this remake.
Such a powerful and heartbreaking song.

Me too! I played that song on repeat after it came out. I also like How Does a Moment Last Forever. But it felt more like the talented song writers who did the original were able to have their talent shine and not hampered by the production team that messed up pretty much everything else.

I also really like the concept of letting belle and the beast bond over their shared love of literature, but I dislike the way they did it. Even in the clip you showed of them talking about king Arthur and the round table I find the beast unlikeable, and in my opinion there’s zero chemistry between them. I’ll mourn the potential.

Yeah, it makes sense that someone as isolated as the Beast could have found tons of solace in books. But I also like how in the original Belle is clearly more well-read than both Beast and Gaston, and I like seeing how both of them react to that fact. I love how the Beast is willing to support Belle's hobby even though he doesn't really understand it.

Agreed. I like the idea of them bonding over literature, it’s just a shame there was no chemistry.

    6. Ewan McGergor as Lumiere, as well as the design
    7. The love between the harpsichord and the armoire
    8. Designs of Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, and Chip
    9. The design of Belle’s baby rattle

I liked Josh Gad's performance as Le Fou. He's still funny, but there's more depth to him. And I liked how the curse was added, and how they removed the 10 year line, and how hte curse must be broken before his 21st birthday. In the remake, the prince is actually an adult. Makes the enchantress less sketchy. ANd I liked how they added in that everyone forgot about the prince, the castle and the servants due to the curse. Makes it more beliviable, that no one would know that there's a castle nearby the village. And how if the curse is not broken before the last petal falls, the servants turn into actual objects.

The getting dolled up for the dance scene in the original (animated) version always amused me, because he comes out looking like the Cowardly Lion when he gets dolled up in Oz, particularly the book illustration (though the 1939 movie's take is also similar).

One scene I loved was the Castle vs Mob scene. When the harpsichord character started using the keys as bullets was funny to me and the way that the wardrobe put the three guys into a dress and the middle guy loved the dress and look. He slayed that look!

My list in no particular order:
    1. Gaston
    2. Plot holes be gone
    3. Why the servants were cursed along with the beast
    4. Evermore
    5. How the dad was imprisoned for picking a flower like in the fairytale
    6. Be our guest
    7. Shared intellect of Belle and Beast
    8. Kill the Beast
    9. Belles blue dress (for the most part)
    10. Belle teaches a girl to read.

OK so with evermore, I don’t think it’s a bad song. I think it is a really good song. I think people that like the music though and in particular people who were also musical theater fans like me were more mad because they had a perfectly good song called if I can’t love her sitting at their fingertips and they didn’t use it. I understand that they wanted to be nominated for an original song in the order that year so I get it but yeah, I think that’s where a lot of the discourse at least among the musical theater fans was coming from with this song.

I heard Alan Menken say that If I Can’t Love Her was written for a two act structure, so they wrote Evermore to fit the three act structure of the film.

I liked the aesthetic of the movie. It's opulent and beautiful to watch. I also liked how Belle's and Beast's relationship has moments where it feels like it's evolved, like when they discuss literature and how they bond over the loneliness that they feel, in their environments, even if the scenes aren't all that well-executed. I also like how Le Fou does have a change of heart towards Gaston, even if the movie doesn't really expand that character arc. Overall, it's not terrible.

Thanks for your videos! I watched the Broadway musical of Beauty and the Beast (actually, a record), and some changes of the live-action were already present in the musical (Pots say that the Beast love Belle; some extra songs). I do not liked the Evermore beause it replaces If I can't love her of the musical, which is perhaps my favorite song. But I must agree that it is a good song.

I heard Alan Menken try to explain the songs. He said If I Can’t Love Her works for a two act structure, but they wrote Evermore because it fits better with a three act structure. 🤷🏻‍♀️

First of all, this movie deserves the criticism it gets. What it does bad, it does it really bad. But I once liked this movie and I recognize the good it has.
The ensemble is good. The singers and dancer are great. Absolutely.
Luke Evans' performance is probably the best out of the entire cast. But about his singing, to me he is second to best with Audra freaking McDonald right there.
I agree the scene with Belle and Beast outside where he is reading King Arthur is a very good scene and we finally see them bonding in a possitive way. If I had to say which one is my favorite scene from this movie, I'd probably would say that one. I even believe they took inspiration from the Broadway musical where Belle is reading the legend of King Arthur to the Beast before he invites her to dinner. Still, I believe the original is way better because having the Beast being interested in books and stories and encouraging Belle's hobby is a striking and meaningful contrast to Gaston always belittling Belle because she likes to read.
I like Cadenza too. But none of the jokes hit for me.
I used to love Evermore and I did listen to it a lot. Now I can barely remember the lyrics. I would have preferred they had If I Can't Love Her and A Change in Me instead of Evermore and How Does a Moment Last Forever. But they would have to re-write the entire movie to fit those songs in ways it makes sense...
    Anyways, good video.

I don't really like this movie but I do like some things about it. Luke Evans, the side cast, the setting. I also like that they made Belle a city girl who had relocated. That adds a little context to her place as an outside without drawing too much attention to it. It wasn't really necessary but, as a plot point, it works. I also really like Dan Stevens' but the script did not help him.

The song Evermore is these thing this movie produced, arguably the only thing, based on opinions. Funny in that is the song that cemented Beast’s feelings and affections for Belle, not the dance scene, or the banters they have, but this song was able to express Beast’s development that made it up for his rude behavior in the movie. Really highlights Dan’s performance, if only the CGI was able to help assist Dan’s role as Beast. So I think the song helped him demonstrate he did phenomenally.

I LOVE the new songs. Days In The Sun, Evermore and How Does a Moment Last Forever - those are actually my favorite parts of this movie. Haven't rewatched in a good while and still revisit these songs constantly. So full of emotion and sincerity... idk I love them with all my heart. I also like how Belle and the Beast bonded more over books and adventure. It's what Belle always yearned for when she was in the village, and her having that in common with the Beast, both unnable to explore the world due to being trapped in their own realities, and then finding comfort in one another once they meet and talk. I also liked the backstory on Belle's mom. I guess I like everything that was added to the movie as something new. What already existed was already great on its own, but the new stuff was able to make the story richer and the movie more entertaining than it'd be if it was a carbon copy of the animated one.

I think you might be a little generous, but I also think there's a lot of merit in finding at least one or two positive things in an otherwise not great movie (something I learned from getting into b-movies).
But I was trying to think of something good about this and I realized I don't actually remember anything about it. It was neither the best nor worst adaptation of B&B, and was just a typical Disney production that tries to stay in the middle lane.

I think you’re right, I was pretty generous. But I like to be a positive person and I’ve done a ton of negative videos, I felt the need to try and do a positive one.
It was definitely one of their remakes to forget. I think the only reasons I remember it is because the animated one is one of my favorite movie of all time so I feel insulted and scarred by the remake.
