  • Hi Everyone and welcome back to Route 7 Railway.
    This video is another in the workbench Sessions series.
    One of my favourite areas of model railways is repairing and keeping running older locomotives, and rolling stock.
    In this video I upgrade an old rake of uk made Hornby ‘Blood and Custard’ coaches. I use Hunt Couplings and Dapol metal wheels.
    The coupling modification required a little bit of rivet removal but nothing too technical on these models. The work on each coach took less than ten minutes.
    The results were amazing. Smoother and more reliable running. Much simpler and convenient handling on the layout. Reduced instances of derailment.
    A very enjoyable and successful workbench session.
    Regards….. Steve 👍👍👍

      Hi DonniB… Thanks for watching and for your nice comments. Yes that Hymek is years old and still goes well. The dapol wheel really made a difference.

      Hi… Thanks for watching and your nice comments.
      There is a good variety of magnetic couplings available these days. It’s just a matter of deciding which type to use in your modification. And will it do the job you want it too.
      Regards… Steve 👍

    I enjoyed this video very much. I love buying old stock and 'modernising' it - for want of a better word. To me it's a major part of my hobby. Right now I'm working on an old pair of Hornby MK1 Buffet cars and I'm turning a cheap HST into a Pullman train so videos like yours always are welcome to me. Thanks a lot.

      Hi Alan….. Thanks for watching. Yes Hunt couplings are so good. I also use the ones from GLR bespoke services. The improvements in running and ease of use on the layout are well worth the cost.
      See you soon…. Steve 👍

    I found that drilling the rivets out works if you use a 5mm drill or bigger and just remove the top of the rivet instead of drilling through.. Like you say they can vary in how tight they are.

    • @route7railway567
      @route7railway567  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi DJ. Thanks for watching. Yes I use the bigger drill on the stubborn ones. Some practically drop out while others are sometimes glued in or deformed by previous owners.

    Hi Steve, it’s amazing the difference the couplings make on a train they can literally make it or break it. They’ve clearly made your train! Runs beautifully, so nice to see that

    • @route7railway567
      @route7railway567  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John…. Yes they run so well. No derailments in both directions, even across parts of the layout they didn’t like previously.
      Old coaches running like new ones…… Result 😜

    Hi Steve another nice video. I've got an old rake of blood and custard as well and I do like them so it's another order from hunts couplings for me. Think I'll try some bachmann wheel sets and see how they get on. Cheers Steve atb Andy

    • @route7railway567
      @route7railway567  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andy and thanks for looking in. These magnetic couplings by Hunt and the ones from GLR Bespoke Services are excellent for improving how wagons and coaches run on the layout.
      Like I say in the video they also give older coaches that are in good condition, but maybe a bit tired, a new lease of life.

      Hi Alan and thanks for dropping in again. I’ve also used magnetic couplings from GLR Bespoke Services on a rake of HO STVA car transporters. They have always been a bit erratic and uncooperative so to speak. Since the couplings have been fitted they have turned into a really nice running set…. result 👍

    A Cracking job Steve!, Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to show us this "How Too", so good to see we can upgrade our older stock,... can you let me know the best place to get these hunt couplings from mate? ... many thanks again Steve.

      @route7railway567  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Keith. Thanks for dropping in and checking the video out. It’s very satisfying when a small upgrade project works out so well.
      West Hill Wagon Works is the company that make them. There is a variety to choose from. If you’re not to sure which ones to get, they do a starter variety pack so you can compare types and see how they fit on your different kit.
      Regards….. Steve 👍

    Hi Steve,
    A very impressive refurbishment and they do run very well so well done a very nice video all-round keep well and safe. I will see how mine go as can always do this at a later date can you tell us what you actually bought to do them?.
    Cheers Robert.

    • @route7railway567
      @route7railway567  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Robert… Thanks for dropping in. Yes I’m very satisfied with the results.
      The couplings I used in the video are the West Hill Wagon Works Hunt Couplings.
      ‘Screw type Standard coupling’
      The alternative ones I showed are:-
      ‘Screw type pivoting’.
      They sell them in different sizes depending how close together you want your coaches or wagons to run.

    Hi Steve, just getting round to improving my couplings now, did the Hunt couplings come with the screw fixings or can you recommend the best size screw for these Triang coaches. Thanks for the video, very helpful, done the wheel upgrade massive improvement.

    Very helpful video Steve. I have replaced wheels but not tried changing couplings yet but will now give it a go. Incidentally what make is your cordless tool and where can you get them. Thanks for sharing.

    • @route7railway567
      @route7railway567  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tezza. Thanks for dropping in. Replacing the wheels makes a big difference in performance. Upgrading the couplings also lowers derailments and makes them much easier to swap and change.
      The tool is by ZEODO www.ebay.co.uk/itm/313828071052?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=zzxsldgjrx6&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=i4pFl-hGRhm&var=612576657953&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
      It’s only a cheap one but does the job. I have one with my layout for cutting track and such, and one on my workbench.
      Regards…. Steve 👍

    There not old couplings still running Tri Ang carriages with the old ones that undo themselves on corners and randomly on points, crossovers and anywhere else why get rid of the fun of that and coaches that come off the rails for going to fast 🤔
