    Let me make this crystal clear, Mike Flanagan can adapt anything in the horror genre, this is a masterpiece that sadly didn't get the respect it deserved at the box office, but we true horror/King fans will never forget it and hold it very high.

      I agree..the book "Doctor Sleep" knocked it out the park..the movie nah.. too much was left out..same w/the Shining and I hated how the killed off the protagonist team when none of them died in the book. Dick Halloran didn't even pass til later on in Dr Sleep.

      King's softened a LOT on the first movie over the years. His rancor about initially he's come to recognize as youthful pride. How DARE the filmmaker change HIS story! Y'know? He's since realized that that's what it mostly was back then, and he's cool with it now.

      The Shining was a cold, detached and clinical look at a man’s descent into madness. Doctor Sleep is a redemption story that involves human connection and compassion and as someone in their late 50s, the story resonates with me more. Statistically I’ve probably got 20 years left so the idea that Danny Torrence redeems himself in the end is what makes the movie special for me.😊

      Not sure which version the girls watched but the extended cut includes a longer version of that scene which is much more graphic. The kid gets killed in both versions, but in the extended the Knott cut him and torture him so he feels more physical pain before they drain him. The behind the scenes video I saw showed that the actor who played Baseball Boy had the easiest time of all of the actors, he would be screaming and crying in pain, they would cut and he would be laughing and joking straight away while the "bad guys" were still feeling like the monsters they were playing.

    This film does an amazing juggling act of serving as both an adaptation of the actual novel while also acting as a sequel to Kubrick's film, which itself is an adaptation of a novel that the source material for THIS film is a sequel of.
    And to me, finding the balance between all of that is executed so incredibly well. This is definitely one of my favorite King adaptations in recent years, and another success for Mike Flanagan.

    • @JakkFrost1
      @JakkFrost1 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      Been a little while since I've read either book, but as I recall, this movie also re-ties full circle back to the original novel by doing something the Kubrick movie skipped, by making The Overlook forget (or "overlook" if you will) the fact that the boiler needed its pressure released or it would destroy the hotel, which it finally did this time.

    While The Shining is the more iconic film, I actually love Doctor Sleep a lot more. It focuses more on Danny’s trauma and recovery, it’s more faithful to Stephen King’s books, and the villain Rose The Hat is far more terrifying than Jack Torrence because Jack was possessed and twisted by the ghosts of the Overlook whereas Rose is a near immortal psychopathic serial killer.

    There's an interview with Rebecca Ferguson where she talks about being unprepared for how the scene with the boy, Jacob Tremblay, would hit her. He played it so well that she had to hide tears, so as not to ruin the scene, and then, when the scene was done, she was worried about how hard it hit the kid, but he just popped up and went to go get a soda, like nothing.

    46:00 The shining is a wonderful film but I felt little connection to many of the characters. Jack's descent into madness took centre stage, Danny was a little creepy and it even took me a little time to be comfortable with the mysterious Dick Halloran. The heart and humanity came from Wendy Torrance but she was incredibly over the top because of Kubriks direction to keep us constantly on edge.
    Doctor sleep turns that all on it's head. As well as expanding the world of shining, I felt so much more invested in most of the characters here.

    46:55 the Irish accent is such a clever choice. It's a little playful and comforting and endearing at times so matches Rose the hats disarming demeanor when she chooses to be. English, Scottish and Irish accents along with not using too many modern English terms gives an authenticity that some of these people have lived for thousands of years.

    You are 100 percent right it is a story about drugs and alchol and you willl see a lot of that in Mike's tv shows because Mike himself struggled with both those addictions for years and was able to finally find the strength within himself to beat it. Mike is a master of minipulaiting both horror and emotioins as well and he mixes them both together so well. He also has a lot of the 'we go on after we die' thing in his shows which is always interesting to see. The actor of the baseball boy was laughing his head off while doing the death scene he had a blast with it but it was really hard on all the other actors around him. The actress of Violet the girl in the beginning who by the way's real life name is Violet as well is actually the actress of young Nell in Haunting of Hill house which like this movie is another Mike Flannagan masterpeice and she was also in M3gan as the main part Cady. Stephen King said he liked how Mike did this with his story unlike when they did the Shinning. The actor that plays Danny's dad here is actually the actor of the kid in ET all grown up and yes Mike uses him in most of his tv shows that he did after this movie. If you want to see more of Mike's movies check out Hush,Occulas and Oujja 2 orgins of evil all amazing movies of his. Side note if you have not seen Huanting of Hill House I recommend you do so. The actress of Abra here is an amazing actress and has been in a lot of things since this movie including Mike's latest tv show Fall of the House of Usher which is based off short stories of Edger Allan Poe but with it's own story to it as well. Rebecca as Rose is amazing and she really brought Rose to life in a way that one would expect her to be. If you saw the tv show Revenge than you know the actress of the one that can control minds here because she plays the main character when she was younger in the tv show Revenge,she is just a lot older now haha. To make the set so much like in the Shinning they actually built a set based on the actual blueprints from the Shinning and made it with their own twist as well. It's interesting that you thought Carl Lumbly who plays the ghost that helps Danny was the same actor from the Shinning. Yes they look a lot alike but they are not the same person and actually Carl himself has been in many movies and tv shows that I like. I love this movie so much and I am glad you did as well grate reaction girls and glad you did this one.

    This is a good reminder that I am long overdue to watch this film. I'm in the definite minority that thinks "The Shining" is the most overrated horror film of all time. I was disappointed in it on opening night in theaters and a few subsequent viewings over the decades since hasn't swayed my opinion, although many of the reasons I dislike it have 'aged out' as newer generations have seen it (mostly how much I dislike Jack Nicholson in it and how he was woefully miscast, IMHO, as was Shelley Duvall). But, having said that, I've heard so many good things about this sequel and now that I'm a big Mike Flanagan fan, along with pretty much all of this cast, I'm going to try and watch it ASAP, then come back and watch your reaction!

    Flanagan is currently working on a limited series for Amazon based on King's "Carrie" and an adaptation of "the Dark Tower" series as well. Him and Frank Darabont (the Sawshank Redemtption, the Green Mile, and the Mist) are THE BEST directors at adapting King's work.

    I watched this movie and then read the book. Now I can never look at RVs on the interstate the same way ever again. Some say that this is part of a larger universe in King's books which includes Firestarter. And the white cat is based on stories of such animals in elderly rest homes. And actually the angelic name of the cat is based on a good natured kindly angle of death. Great reaction, thank you.

      And according to the book, Rose the Hat is right. There are others and they have connections to power and wealth. So plenty of material for sequels.

      I work at Wal-Mart, and I used to go in at 4 AM. We have to park at the back of the parking lot, and a lot of nights RV groups would park overnight. This movie made those nights a lot more uncomfortable.

    I’m sorry, I don’t want to be controversial with this take, but it was so great seeing the two of you together for this reaction, considering all of the new contributors to the channel. Your chemistry is why I started watching this channel. This is maybe the best sequel ever made, considering the original movie is so well regarded. Stephen King really knocked it out of the park with the story.

    Something from the novel that I wish they'd kept for the movie is that Dan discovers he really is Abra's uncle. It turns out Abra's grandmother slept with Jack before the events of the Shining.

    Doctor Sleep is THE greatest horror sequel of all time. This movie had no business being as great as it was, not to mention a whopping 40 years later! And no less a sequel to one of the greatest horror films of all time. Flanagan killed it. The real bummer is that no one saw it at the cinema. It was a massive bomb and it pisses me off. That said, I'm glad people have come around and started discovering this horror gem.

    Achara & Steph are the perfect reactors for Mike Flanagan's type of horror. If they haven't seen his Haunting series or Midnight Mass or some of his other films like Oculus or Before I Wake, they'd be great videos for them to watch.

    Fun fact: unbeknownst to Dan, Abra's mom is Jack Torrance's illegitimate daughter, making her Dan's little sister, which means Abra REALLY IS his niece. He actually IS 'Uncle Dan', for real.

    This is one of my favorite movies. I think the changes they made to the Dr Sleep book to make it fit as a sequel to the Shining movie was masterful and i didn't mind the changes at all. The Shining book contained a lot of this lore but was removed to focus more on the cabin fever aspect that Kubrick decided to go with. I like Kubrick's shining, but i love the Shining book which had much more complex characters and focused on this lore a lot more. I am so happy with Kubrick's Shining and Flanagan's Dr Sleep as a duo because now it includes the aspects that Kubrick removed.

    Mike Flanagan might be THE best director in horror ever. He does nothing but knock it out of the park, and it's not coincidence that he loves Stephen King as much as he does.

  • @justarandomveryintelligent8934
    @justarandomveryintelligent8934 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Its not completely accurate to the book but thats because it had to be a sequel to Kubrick's the shining as well. Kubrick changed two major things in The Shining. First thing is that book Jack Torrance genuinely loved his family but had childhood trauma from an abusive father that fueled his alcoholism and while he had brute forced his sobriety he hadn't dealt with and healed that trauma yet and the Overlook played on that to get to Jack so that it could get to Danny. The other thing is that in the book DIck Halloran (the character that Scatman Crothers played and that Carl lumbly plays in Doctor Sleep) survived in the book and that story about his grandfather was waaaaay darker. So Mike Flanagan had to work around the fact that Dick Halloran was dead and that Jack Torrance in the film was far less sympathetic in the film to make this sequel and he did an amazing job. Aside from those things theres small changes like the fact that in the book the True Knot were all dying from modern diseases and thats why Rose the Hat was desperate for a big supply of steam. Also Snake Bite Andy's backstory was in the book and was very dark. A big change was that the Torrance family was linked to Abra's family in the book and not in the movie. I kinda wish they kept that reveal but it would require explaining Jack Torrance's activities before the events of the Shining which would have taken time away from the plot of this movie considering the Shining film didn't go into it.
