I think a mix of drugs, body dysmorphia, and cruelly relentless paparazzi sent her over the edge. I remember a video where she was covering her face with some fabric to avoid paparazzi photos while she was trying to get into a building (I think her residence), and one paparazzi man kept pulling the sweatshirt off of her head. She said “please don’t touch me” several times. But he reached up to her face and pulled it off over and over. My jaw dropped when I saw that. That was honestly depraved. I sure as hell don’t blame her for wanting to black out her windows and all of that, even if it didn’t seem like a rational behavior... because from her experiences, it kind of WAS a rational behavior, whether she was using drugs at the time or not.

I think it also didn’t help that she had no support system. Her mother basically made her spiral into her eating disorder by saying she looked good when she was severely underweight from mono so she felt like she was only worth something when she was that weight and tried to maintain it. Then she had ‘friends’ who send pictures of her apartment to the paparazzi who then proceeded to expose her living conditions and shame her, which definitely didn’t help her obvious mental turmoil

    • @MalcH
      @MalcH 3 ปีที่แล้ว +106

@@lunarialoonatic I certainly agree with you about that - had she had a better support system, I think things would’ve turned out differently for her. When she was inpatient and when she was under her conservatorship with her family for a period of time, she seemed to be doing much better - but that’s only based off of the narratives we’ve seen, and we can’t really know what was going on behind the scenes unless that information is disclosed.
Western beauty standards (namely, being thin, wealthy, and white) propagated via Hollywood and popular culture certainly influenced her from a young age in the entertainment industry, and her mother’s snarky comments (whether intentionally snarky or not) were probably sprinkled throughout her childhood and into her adult life. I’m sure that had a lot to do with her self-image and eating disorder, unfortunately. A better support system to help her and care for her would have been greatly beneficial for her.

@Mal c.H You’re right, I would totally want to black out my windows after that. Throughout the whole video, I was wondering if it would be illegal to carry a taser around and taser somebody that touched her even when she asked them not to. I would honestly lose my mind.

I've always had a sweet spot for Amanda, I actually went to FIDM during the same time she was there and would often see her minding her own business and seemed relatively normal from what I've seen in the tabloids. But one day she walked over to me and my classmates while we were doing homework in the library, and asked if we were taking photos of her. We were kind of shocked that she was talking to us but at the same time were confused and told her no. She did not believe us and asked to pull up the last photo we took on our phones. My classmate then showed his phone and she immediately apologized and walked away. At that point, we all felt bad for her and can't imagine the detrimental trauma the paparazzis must have caused towards her or towards any celebrity really. My heart goes out to her!

Thank you for not being immediately offended or rude when she asked if you guys were taking pics. And an extra thank you for showing her your camera rolls. You gave her the peace of mind no one had allowed her to have almost her entire life. I wouldn't be surprised if she remembered you guys simply because of your kindness to her. I imagine small interactions like that is what keeps her going, knowing that there ARE good people in this world that aren't out to exploit her. Thank you for showing her such kindness

Poor girl i cant imagine the constant paranoia she felt being in public. That could possibly be one of the reasons for the drug abuse. Except stimulants make you extra paranoid especially when they cause severe insomnia. So add not sleeping for a couple days into the mix and you've got textbook psychosis. i wouldn't blame anyone for acting the way she has given what shes been through.

    • @feliperea3271
      @feliperea3271 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

I mean. Back then a picture of Lindsay for instance could go for upwards of 10K. A picture of her would be worth less money yes, but putting yourself in her shoes, you would eventually learn to be completely paranoid that at any moment anyone could be watching you, and at any time you saw a phone in your presence and any semblance of a happy face in the person holding it, you would assume he is thinking “wow, I just got a perfect one, that’s gonna be worth much more than 10K look she has her finger in her nose “ or something like that. Over time anyone would start seeing things, especially if you have a mental illness. And in that situation people might even make things up and involve your name into it so they can make such amount of money by selling it, their hearsay story like at this point in the video 10:15 i mean where’s the proof it was Amanda ? Where’s the scratch actually? All there’s there is something anyone can actually do to themselves, it’s just pressing your arm with your fingers, there’s no bodily damage there, there’s no video or picture of Amanda doing that, but that person got at least 5K for those pictures and that story back then. So living in those circumstances i mean. We all would be completely paranoid to a point of maybe even having a complete breakdown, like everyone everywhere is trying to make money of taking and selling pictures of you, and the more humiliating, or revealing, or anything like that the more it paid

They get to run the highest office in the land and billion dollar businesses. And this video clearly shows Amanda being distressed by the paparazzi. People who call the paparazzi on themselves, like the Kardashians and influencers, are fair game to call attention seekers bc they have no actual talent to perpetuate a career other than making headlines. THAT is the difference between overworked young female stars and actual attention-seeking vampires.

@Karl M I feel like we can’t hold child celebs to the same standard for every single one of them.
Amanda Bynes, Lindsey Lohan, Britney Spears, and Paris Hilton have all made it very clear that they didn’t have any type of support system and their parents did more harm than good.
A lot of the people you mentioned (which this is purely anecdotal) are people I have NEVER heard of. Which means they didn’t have the same attention and audience that major celebs like Amanda Bynes at the time and Britney Spears did.
That’s not even concerning the fact that many mental illnesses are genetic and can manifest in sooo many different ways and at different stages of a person’s life. So even though some child stars made it out okay, they probably had parents who were protecting them in certain aspects, a good support system, and most likely were completely neurotypical for a lot of their time in the spotlight before developing their mental health problems after years of the exposure to Hollywood.
I know you’re not arguing against the points being made. But I don’t think it’s a great perspective to look at struggling child celebs and hold them to the same standards as other child Celebs who made it to adulthood with little controversy. It perpetuates the idea that those girls were just messed up and didn’t deserved the attention they received or were ungrateful for it and Rhine sit for themselves, or just fucked up from the get go. Rather than addressing the key issue. That being the lack of resources they had compared to other celebrities.

I think everyone can relate to feeling self conscious and worrying about their appearance and the terrible feeling of seeing a friend or family post a photo that you hated online. Now she is experiencing this on such an incredibly cruel and unique level where the whole world is witnessing this. I don’t understand why it is tolerated for paparazzi to swarm you, surround you, physically assault you, demean and insult and having absolutely no respect for their wish to be left alone. Just a terribly sad situation and I’m not sure how she can possibly be treated and recover in such an environment.

I don’t know if she has any real friends other than her bf but if not I really hope she can meet some more healthy, kind, and loving ppl somehow. We all need more than just one person to count on bc god forbid if anything were to happen then you won’t be totally alone again. I think her focus on ugly this, that, etc., stems from never being casted in pretty girl/love interest roles when she was acting, compounded with being told her face was too round for those roles and that she was beautiful when she was in the throws of mono (which led to her ED). All Amanda wanted was to be shown via projects that she could be the pretty girl, she could do that role, and her thing for fashion plays into that: her mental faculties latched on to her deep deep need to be seen as pretty/sexy/gorgeous as Lindsay Lohan and Megan Fox and her fellow contemporaries.

I remember this was the first time I saw a celebrity have a “meltdown” where I was old enough to understand that they weren’t just “crazy.” When I first heard about all of this years ago, I remember feeling so saddened. With Britney and Lindsay, I was only 9 or 10 when most of their stuff was publicized. I didn’t understand, and I wrote them off as being insane, though I was still a fan of both.
These videos are super important, because so many people still have that mindset that these women are just “crazy crack addicts.” For the most part, what we see is a sudden spike in illegal activity and mental instability, but what your videos show is that it was cultivated over years of being ridiculed, pitted against other women, compared, stalked, shamed, and defined. I also want to say that much older men dating them doesn’t help either! Her WILAY costar was 25 and she was 16. Her Amanda Show costar was 18 and she was 14. Very creepy!

Adderall is basically clean and legal meth and abuse of that drug causes paranoia, delusions, and breaks from reality. It happens. She clearly suffered abuse in the industry, as most beautiful young women do. Compound that with the trappings of fame and the body dismorphia and there is the perfect storm for the behavior she displayed. It also seemed like she was completely alone throughout most of this. I know that Amanda was extremely sick mentally but she was in public countless numbers of times with the wigs or disheveled clothes (and that's not affecting anyone else but she deserves better than that, she was mentally ill she cannot control it most likely), then the incidents which did affect people like locking herself in different places, and then finally starting the fire unprovoked, like she ruined that person's driveway for no reason and her poor dog got hurt.
The case for Amanda is not the same as the case for Britney at all- she didn't do half the things Amanda did and Britney was really only once notably shown doing something criminal

As someone who has ADHD and has been taking medication for it for several years, I'd like to add a few things:
Firstly, taking ADHD meds with a mood disorder can dramatically worsen your symptoms. This isn't true for all of them and is also highly individual - Ritalin (methylphenidate) is infamous for causing depressive episodes whereas Vyvanse (lisdexamphetamine) generally does not. Like Vyvanse, Adderall is a form of amphetamine, and while I haven't taken it myself it seems like it causes euphoric feelings rather than depressive. It *is* sometimes used to treat bipolar disorder but it's very much not recommended as it can worsen manic episodes.
Secondly, ADHD meds can induce psychosis. Your brain works so fast because so many neurotransmitters are active and it can cause hallucinations/ lucid dreams etc even if you DO need the pills. If I take my meds at odd hours or accidentally mix them with energy drinks/ alcohol I get quite bizarre side effects, and I'm someone who has to take pills to activate those transmitters. My friends who take them recreationally at times have also reported strange dreams and feeling like they're in a very weird state of mind. (Caveat: this has been when taking them at night, mixing them with other substances, or taking too high of a dose.)
Thirdly, they can cause paranoia. This is a part of psychosis (hallucinations, delusions, paranoia) but I'm giving it its own point because I want to emphasize that large doses of ADHD medication when you're already in the public eye would very likely cause someone to feel extremely paranoid.
Fourthly, you can get very dependent on Adderall!!! You build up tolerance fast and will require more and more of it to get the same effects. This isn't necessarily unsafe in itself, but it can make quitting Very difficult. On days that I have skipped my Vyvanse I get severe headaches and feel extremely tired TT Methylphenidates like Ritalin can be taken when you need them since they're short-term, which makes skipping or irregular hours more okay, but amphetamines like Adderall or Vyvanse really require a schedule for when you take them because they stay in your body way longer. So beyond wanting to stay on meds to e.g. lose weight there's a clear disincentive to quit the pills, even if you absolutely can and most people handle it quite well.
To lose substantial amounts of weight on Adderall you also need to be taking quite large doses of it. I haven't lost anything on Vyvanse and I'm on 90mg a day - for reference, the recommended daily max dose is 60mg for Adderall and 70mg for Vyvanse. Of course this depends on the person, but she must have been taking quite a bit...
I want to make it very clear that I am not trying to blame everything on pills or undermine the role that the media played in this. ADHD medication can be taken safely and without issue just like any other type of medical treatment. I'm very grateful to be taking mine. However, it does absolutely affect your brain - that's the whole point -, and shouldn't be taken so lightly. Adderall is NOT just a weight loss pill that makes you focus. It's a serious medication for a serious medical condition that's very rarely seen as such, neither by the media nor the GP. (As a sidenote, the attempts at destigmatising ADHD I've been seeing lately really aren't helping at all - making it into this generic condition with traits so vague that 95% of the population would fit the description just means it isn't taken seriously. It'd take too long to get into but it causes a Lot of problems for me, please don't throw it around so much.)
TLDR: Adderall will seriously fuck up your brain and I think we should keep this in mind when discussing how Amanda Bynes ended up in the situation that she's in.

i agree with everything you said, and i appreciate you writing something so informative and eloquent. i do however believe that her cannabis use also played a part in the development of her psychosis.
as far as i know, frequent cannabis use can accelerate the development of mixed/manic episodes including rapid cycling in people with underlying/undiagnosed/untreated bipolar disorder, as well as psychosis in those predisposed to it, especially in those whose brains are still developing (before age 25). the short-term effects of cannabis can feel very helpful for managing psychotic and bipolar symptoms so it is very understandable why cannabis and these illnesses seem to come together so often.
i think the adderall's encouragement of sleep deprivation and overstimulation of dopamine receptors and the nervous system certainly worsened amanda's condition, and combined with cannabis use, and the external factors in her life, it unfortunately created a 'perfect storm' for a breakdown.
i wish you and her all the best :)

@@JulietLong oh yes, i kind of forgot about that! thank you for pointing it out. i always feel a bit uneasy about speculating too wildly about someone’s brain and addictions, but i also dont want this to go unsaid. thank you for bringing up the point about cannabis as well . you’re probably right that that could be more responsible for psychosis.
thanks again and i hope you’re having a nice day!!

@@maxens_is_here thank you for saying that :^) i dont want to speculate too wildly about someone’s mental state and their drug abuse, but i never see anyone bring up the actual side effects of adderall (or other ADHD medication) beyond weight loss, not even in this quite in-depth series, and felt that it was important to point out. glad it could be of help to you.

Yes!! I absolutely agree with you! Someone who struggles with mental health and who has a history of being self conscious (putting it lightly) do need uplifting. She’s received the complete opposite of that which would bring anyone who struggles with mental health issues way way down. This whole story breaks my heart. Thank you SO much for covering this and for bringing to light what’s going on for those of us (me) who really didn’t know. This series is the first of your videos I’ve watched. I adore you already and respect and appreciate the time and effort you put into your work. Thank you!
