The recipe includes buttermilk powder, parsley (or alternatives like carrot tops), garlic powder, onion powder, dill, chives, salt, and pepper, with optional additions for sweetness or spiciness.
Rachel offered substitutions based on what might be available or preferred, such as using carrot tops instead of parsley and freeze-dried green onion tops in place of onion powder.
She highlighted the benefits of keeping buttermilk powder as a versatile pantry staple and how it can be easily mixed with water when needed.Making homemade mixes can save money and avoid unwanted additives found in store-bought versions.
Rachel illustrated this with the ranch mix, noting that a single bag of buttermilk powder costs less than multiple bottles of ranch dressing, and many ingredients can be homegrown.
The ranch seasoning mix is versatile, usable in various recipes beyond dressing, such as for chicken coating or popcorn flavoring.
Rachel encouraged viewers to explore other homemade pantry staples like taco seasoning, cake mixes, and hot chocolate mix, emphasizing the ease and benefits of preparing these at home.

I think schools should have videos like yours for Home Ec class. I’m in my early 70s and when I went to school we had Home ec. I learned so much in that class.

I'm 42. When I was in middle school we had Home Ec. By the time I was in high school in the late 90s they had officially changed the name to Family and Consumer Science but the students still called it home ec. I took 3 years of home ec and got that as my technical education seal on my high school diploma (if we took 3 or more years in one elective course, we would get a special seal displaying our knowledge in that subject).

I just made homemade buttermilk ranch dressing this morning. It’s a very forgiving recipe. I just trimmed a bunch of herbs from my plants and added to my dressing. I always keep a half gallon of buttermilk in my fridge, and everything else is just pantry staples. Once you make your own dressing, you will never go back to store bought

Great video and recipe. I found out in 2019 that I have developed an allergic reaction to monosodium glutamate. It took my engineer husband's devotion to deduction to find it. He start focusing on cause effect, and found it. It was a mystery prior, because we looked at food's we were consuming, soaps, shampoo, laundry soap, lotions etc. But it was in spice mixes, salad dressing, sauces, crackers, and so much more. We went through every item in the house and gave 2 grocery bags full of items to family members. We now check every label, we rarely ate out before, so not doing it isn't an issue. The incredible thing is that I have no problem whatsoever when we travel throughout Europe. They don't allow that in their food. We all need to learn to scratch cook and avoid all of those chemicals.

I can’t believe you don’t grow parsley, it is so easy to grow, super healthy, helps deter pests in the garden and is super easy to harvest and dry ! Carrot tops are healthy and good too, but parsley is actually easier because one plant produces A LOT ! Plus it just keeps growing more stems after you harvest. I grow tons of celery too, I can the stalks and dehydrate the leaves. For those who haven’t grown their own herbs, you really don’t even know what they taste like, homegrown packs punch of flavor !!!
Mirepoix is a French flavor base and is a handy canned pantry staple, onions, celery and carrots canned together you have a start to any dish !!! I suppose you could freeze dry it too !

Two things. First. I made yuur chili base the other day (last years tomatoes were still in my freezer 😂) anyway, the chili base is amazing!! I added some pumpkin purée and dried zucchini but used your base recipe and it was fabulous!! Thanks!
Second, I too make bulk ranch dressing mix and made some recently using what’s left in my bulk herb storage of my parsley. So in my head, I’m thinking I need to plant some more parsley so that I will have enough to get me through the winter. I was just thinking about doing that this weekend. I also have three beds of carrots that are ready for harvest so I won’t be planting parsley, I’ll be harvesting carrots and freeze drying carrot tops. Thanks so much for that as well!

This is one of my favorite videos!! The extra tips for substitutions. I am the kid in school who couldn’t be given a piece of paper and told to draw something. So when it comes to cooking I need a recipe. I am slowly breaking away from that. I grow carrots and the thought of not have to grow parsley in my tiny space and just using carrot tops instead is perfect for me.

I started reading ingredients from store bought products to educate myself on What are they putting in there. Now I mix my own staple items-WAY HEALTHIER, TASTIER & CHEAPER. Taco, Alfredo Sauce, Italian Spice , Hamburger Helper, Ranch, Seasoned Bread Crumbs, Spaghetti Sauce, Sloppy Joe, Meat Loaf, Italian dressing, French Fry Seasoning and more. Over the last 7 years I saved a ton of money, I NEVER buy the packets. Buying BULK- example 1 gal. black pepper 6 lbs. approx. $30, wow I literally save thousands. Those 3 inch high pepper containers are like $4 for maybe 3oz. Bulk 96oz. so 32 -3 inch cans for $30 instead of paying $128, I package extras in mylar to keep it fresh with an oxygen packet. Normally $30 would only buy me 7 1/2 cans, instead I get 32 cans when buying bulk. Spend $30 save $98 on just this 1 product. This provides STOCK in my pantry. By mixing my own it has allowed me to share with my daughter who is always throwing together some type of gathering for everybody and those packets can add up quickly when your making several dishes to feed 20-30 mostly youngsters with big appetites after swimming,camping,4 wheeling, hiking etc. (boy was I glad when she stepped up and took over the responsibility of feeding the "HERD" :).10teenage boys 1 girl and a 5yr.old boy. I get to sit back and enjoy the outings and watching the lessons taught over the years being performed by the next generation-a family that plays together stays together. Since I have been raising 3 grandsons and the 19 1/2 yr. old is moving out in a couple of weeks, I have shown him how a penny saved IS a penny earned and he will be able to eat heartily by saving money on making the convenience items in bulk which establishes a routine in always having what he'll need to cook for himself while being able to better afford good meal making habits. Sure it takes a few moments to mix together your ingredients, in the long run your saving on garbage bags too because your not opening a new convenience packet, saving on gas because you have enough at home in bulk there is no need to run to the store daily fight traffic then find out the product has sold out. I've shopped once a month since 1984, maybe 1-2 times a year I go twice. Use it up wear it out make do or go without.

I love ranch dressing and being able to adjust the recipe to my tastes is perfect. I love cilantro but not sure I would use it here.

I stopped buying ranch dressing mix several years ago and started making my own. I have not bought it since. I also make my own taco and chili seasoning. I make all 3 a pint at a time. 1/4 c is about the equivalent of 1 package.

Juicing my sour cherries today. The rain we have gotten (3 inches in 24 hours and not done) has made them split so its juice instead of pies. But cherry jelly will be so good in the middle of winter.

We are just not milk drinkers but need it in cooking so a few years ago we started buying dry milk packets at walmart. PERFECT!!!

I would love to know if there are ways to make the au jus mix at home as well. I like to be able to control the amount of salt and of course the preservatives.

Rachel, you’ve got me thinking. We use a lot of Montreal Steak seasoning. I’m going to figure out how to make it!

You're so calm in the kitchen, especially when canning. Thank you for the recipies. I live alone and don't put dressing on my salads normally. I might have a hard time using up even a small amount of ranch dressing, but I have saved the video just in case.

You could just use a up to a Tablespoon of this powder to 1/4 cup sour cream for a dip or combo of sour cream/ plain yogurt & milk for dressing. Make a smaller batch of the powder and store in freezer maybe?

Thanks Rachel for another great homemade recipe. As crazy as it sounds, ranch dressing is also great to drizzle on top or dip pizza in. I've found that so many convenience spice mixes have MSG or other crazy things, I am in the process of converting everything I can. Found a major pickle brand that is putting high fructose corn syrup in dill pickles. Just got cucumbers today so won't buy those anymore.

I don’t even LIKE ranch dressing, but do use it for dip and when grand kiddos visit… thanks for this. Have you ever freeze dried it? Would love more freeze drying vids and ideas, although i know it’s a more limited audience….

Thank you for giving alternatives for the ingredients. I am still trying to find a copycat Rice-a-roni rice pilaf recipe. ;)
