I’m starting over. When my kids were all growing up I canned all the time. After my divorce at 50 I bought my first home by myself and I’m buying canning jars and water bath canner back. My grandson helps me garden. I’m 74 and told my grandson I wanted to make ketchup next. Thanks for showing me how to make it easier.

Hi Rachel! When I spent summers with my grandmother she ALWAYS had an abundance of tomatoes . I think we must have canned a hundred quarts of tomatoes in every way possible. Funny story- we were exhausted of canning everything their 2 acre garden provided- especially burnt out with tomatoes. My grandpa brought in 1 last #3 washtub of tomatoes and promised that was all for the season. My grandmother thanked him then she proceeded to carry that washtub full of tomatoes and dumped them in the large compost bin. 😂 she came back into the house laughing and yelled ‘hallelujah’! I was never so happy that summer and learned there are ways to handle stress with grace and humor.
Oh, and then close to hundred tomato plants sprung up in the compost bin with the promise to have another prosperous tomato harvest again. 😁
Thank you Rachel , Leisa and 4 Jars for all of your work to make Canuary 2024 a success!
    I LOVE CANUARY!

I love your recipes! Thank you so much for sharing all the canning/recipe ideas. My bestie and I are new to canning. Her husband has recently been diagnosed with inoperable cancer. I am able to pull your recipes, can with her for an afternoon, take her mind off all the bad stuff. Pls keep sharing! I appreciate the difference you’re making in our day to day!

I made it! I canned up 6 pints last night, after receiving my Mrs Wages and steam canner. I used 3 quarts of tomatoes that were getting a bit old to keep on the shelf. I did use the sugar. I tasted it just before putting it into the jars and dang!!!!! It is SO, SO good. I am going to try the honey version as well. The steam canner was so easy compared to water bath! Thank you so very much Rachel.

I made a lot of ketchup for the first time last year using Mrs. Wages and we love it! Like you, I also added extra tomato paste to thicken my ketchup so I didn't have to reduce the tomatoes too much. My grandkids told me the homemade ketchup tastes better than the store ketchup too! I loved your suggestion of using honey instead of the sugar. I will be trying that trick when I make the ketchup again as I think it's important to reduce the granulated sugar intake too. Thank you for sharing this canning project. I love adding homemade sauces to my pantry that can be used to make a variety of meals. Thank you for participating in Canuary 2024 and thank you to ForJars for your sponsorship and your awesome lids and thank you to Leisa Sutton at Suttons Daze for making this collaboration happen!

I love how you deal with "feeling overwhelmed and getting to a better place" when your garden is producing an over abundance . It's awesome to get the how-to video and a life lesson at the same time. I have never made ketchup before thinking I would have to cook all the tomato juice forever to get it thickened up. Your version using tomato juice, paste, Mrs. Wage's mix and honey is exactly what I need! Thank you, Rachel!! And God bless all the Canuary contributors!

Appreciate your reminder about just canning up the plain tomatoes to not get overwhelmed, and then can turn them into separate products later when there is more time and/or need. Really great! Love idea of using honey instead of white sugar. Thank you for sharing this recipe, and really love this collaboration. The cute pop graphics at the end, love them!

These Canuary video's over the last couple of years actually gave me the courage to start canning. I grew up with a mom who barely knew how to cook and her only food preservation tool was a freezer. I always dreamed of having a large garden and being able to stock a pantry from that garden. 4 years ago we bought a small piece of land in Idaho and today I have my own pantry. This collaborative has helped so many of us create basic food security for our families, thank you so much Rachel for being such an inspiration

Thank you for sharing the ketchup recipe. My husband and kids get excited when a new Todd and Rachel recipe shows up in our feed (We use Todd’s sausage Alfredo recipe ALL THE TIME). You both inspire us to be graceful with our aspirations while trying new things and pursuing our passions. It isn’t easy getting out of our comfort zones, but necessary for growth.
I don’t can just yet, but getting the motivation and encouragement from all the great Canuary videos. I specifically appreciate the multi-use reference for tomato sauce. I've never made ketchup and all of your suggestions on how to adjust to make it thicker are really helpful. Mrs. Wages is new to me so thank you for the affiliate link. I'll have to go back to your video to see if you commented whether the honey substitution was 1:1 (1.5 cups of honey) or modified. Great, perfectly-timed, garden suggestion to plant at least 5 types of tomatoes to get fuller flavor. This is my first Canuary and I'm a new subscriber to your channel. Thanks for your relaxed, helpful contributions, Rachel! I loved the little POP's at the end. :) And thanks to @suttonsdaze and @forjars for sponsoring Canuary 2024..

I've never heard of steam canning until I saw this u-tube video that had been posted on Gab. That looks very interesting to try. I try to have as much variety in my garden as possible, as I feel it's so important to eat your own grown foods over store bought. And for me it's even more important as I have no immune system due to fighting leukemia. I do have to be careful in the garden because the soil can contains things that would be very harmful for me, but i don't let that stop me. I had meningo-encephalitis 2 1/2 years ago which has some permanent symptoms such as double vision and balance issues, but i just ignore those symptoms and keep on plugging along. I'm exhausted by the end of the season, but it all keeps me active and is helping me to heal as well.

I've been thinking about making our own ketchup for awhile now. I often say ketchup is at its heart chutney. The history of ketchup is fascinating. It's commonly one of the first strong flavors introduced to infants. Which is why adding ketchup when introducing new foods to picky toddlers often works. Almost like somewhere deep inside us we believe "ketchup fixes everything." 😉

Then, I thought I had processed all the bags out of the freezer until we had to shuffle with incoming beef and found 2 more gallon bags!!! 🥴 I had a tantrum and threw them back to the bottom of the deep freeze! Looks like it will be ketchup! Thanks for sharing Rachel, I am always inspired by your content ❤️❤️

I made ketchup one year and my family turned up their noses at it. Looking forward to trying Mrs Wages. Thank you for sharing! 😊

Hi Rachel it's so good to hear you talk about being overwhelmed in the garden. You're absolutely correct and so realistic. I'm with you on the ketchup I haven't found any that I really liked I will have to try Mrs wages. Thank you again Rachel. Thank you Leisa and for jars for this wonderful opportunity and sponsoring this collaboration.

I’ve not canned ketchup before, my brother did and said it was so much better than store bought.

I haven’t made ketchup since my 20’s when I had small children. Once and done back then! I will try this recipe, so much quicker and easier. Thank you Rachel and Leisa

Thank you Sutton's Daze for hosting CANERARY collaborative.
I'm really enjoying this years. I do can alot during this time of the year. Due to the fact that canning produces lots of heat, so it helps heat my home.
Thank you ForJars for sponsoring Canurary. Your company makes folks feel more comfortable about canning due to the quality of your products. As soon as I as I finish what lids I have, plan on restocking with your's.

I always thought ketchup would take forever. I’m inspired to make this and I love that you suggest we just get the tomatoes in the jar and can something later. All the tomatoes!
