    Great video. Always fun to see what kind of ammo a rifle likes best.

    It's really a treat to see someone firing rimfire trying to get the best groups, people in general, don't appreciate the challenge of target shooting with a .22 LR, accuracy is there with the .22, however, some think that centerfire has some sort of edge as if the foundation of .22LR isn't serious. "Ya.. is just a .22" How many times have you heard that? Good video. -Dave

      With the price of ammo I feel better going slow and trying to wring the most out of the stuff.

      I was replying to this one earlier and lost the response. It's more than a reward to be able to do this and take your damn time. I couldn't agree more with Dave and the author here being that the slower you do it, the better it gets!

    I'm a fan of the CCI standard velocity ammo as well. Seems to shoot decently in everything.

    • @314299
      @314299  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it seems to. I think it is easier for standard velocity .22 ammo to shoot more accurately than the high velocity loadings.

    My Remington 521-T is my favorite .22 rifle. Mine belonged to my father. I refinished the stock and put a Lyman AML globe sight on the front. It is lightweight and fun to shoot. I always get nice comments on it at the range.

      @314299  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's in quite nice shape for it's age. The only real down side to it is a somewhat heavy trigger. I have other "target" ammo that I need to try in it to see if there is a loading that it likes better.

  • @philip4193
    @philip4193 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, the CCI 40gn LRN target rounds usually shoot very well across all my various 22lr rifles for both plinking and match use, and it is definitely on the cheaper side. In fact, the only time I ever fork out double the price of the CCI for fancy match target rounds is when I'm shooting in comps with my club, and then I will use SK Club or Rifle Match for slightly tighter groups (the CCI is just as good, however I have found there tends to be a noticeable flyer every 12-18 rounds not found in the SK's).

    • @314299
      @314299  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that "flyer elimination" is what you pay the extra $ for. I have come across lots of lower cost 22 ammo that would put nine of ten rounds into a nice group, with the tenth shot doubling the size of the group.

      I'm not surprised either, CCI is a reliable performer, especially the standard velocity stuff. I was a bit surprised that the rifle did not care for the Federal 510 load, as it usually shoots better than in this Remington.

    I had a Remington .22 target rifle like that but it had a globe front sight with spare sights contained in a cap which screwed onto the bottom of the pistol grip. I sold it because it was a little bit clumsy as a gopher gun and now I'm kicking myself ( for me the true acid test of a .22 is how it performs in the gopher patch).

    • @314299
      @314299  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a nice one. Those globe sights are excellent (with the right insert installed) for shooting round bullseye targets like I was using.

      I would call it a moderately breezy day when I did the shooting. Overall I expected better accuracy than I got. Perhaps the barrel needed a better cleaning before I started the testing.

    A clean barrel is a must . Also to be fair to the ammo used, cleaning after changing brands is also necessary. Then a couple fouling shouts after cleaning . Then take your 5 shots for group. Takes time and alittle work. But remember, this is supposed to be fun. Right ?🤣

    • @314299
      @314299  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally I think that cleaning between brands/types is a waste of time and ammo. I'm sure the ammo makers and sellers approve of it. As for fouling, sure, fire a few fouling rounds with the "new" round before shooting for groups. As for five round groups, I'm not a believer in them for testing 22 ammo as ten round groups tend to show up the "flyers" so often found in 22 ammo.

  • @diogenes5381
    @diogenes5381 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Remove Carbon ring at chamber throat. That build up can resize bullets. Also try loading rounds single shot. The trip out of the magezine could force the bullet into the top of the chamber scraping or bending the bullet out of concentricity. Not all 22 bullets are the same. When loading rounds by hand you might notice some rounds slip easily into the chamber & some are tight & need more force to chamber. Those rounds will have different points of impact.

    • @314299
      @314299  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is good advise. Normally I do give used barrels a cleaning before use but this time I failed to give this barrel a clean of any sort, I just gave it a quick look to make sure it was clear/safe and took it to the range. It may well be fouled with carbon/lead enough to effect accuracy, it certainly should have shot better than it did. After a proper cleaning I will try again to see if things improve any.

    Nice ammo test. Thank you for posting that.
    Boy that Aguila stuff certainly impressed me!
    All I've ever heard about it is that its dirty and inaccurate, but your testing seems to prove the opposite.
    Maybe they're getting better about their QC?
    ...by the way, I looked it up (I've been curious too), "Aguila", is pronounced "Ah-Gee-La" (The "G" in "Gee" like in the word "Get").
    Apparently, its Spanish for "Eagle".

    • @314299
      @314299  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I remember shooting Aguila with my brother 40 years ago, and back then it was cheap and dirty, but generally reliable. Their current production seems much, much, better. I purchased a case of the standard velocity stuff last year, it shoots pretty well for the price and it has been 100% reliable in the guns I've used it in.

    If you was to chronograph that lot, I would be completely unsurprised if they have a rather large velocity spread. With the CCI being the conspicuous exception.

    • @314299
      @314299  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's quite possible. I have noticed "flyers" in otherwise good groups tend to be different in speed. If my chronograph would cooperate I would be inclined to use it in conjunction with these sessions, however it does not want to communicate with my phone as it is supposed to.

  • @leighrate
    @leighrate 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you hadn't got an acceptable result with the CCI, I would have been questioning the rifle, the shooter or both.
    It would have definitely been time to get the sledge out.

    • @314299
      @314299  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In fairness to the rifle I neglected to give the bore a good cleaning prior to shooting it, perhaps that might have improved results. The trigger on this rifle is pretty heavy for a "target" type rifle, and I was starting to wonder if I was just not getting the rounds off cleanly. Seeing that the CCI shot decent was a bit of a vindication. I have more types of ammo to try and it will be interesting to see how well the rifle does with those.

    • @314299
      @314299  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doing this test over and use a different 22 rifle would rather miss the point of seeing how this rifle shoots, would it not? The video was more about how the rifle shot rather than than the specific individual ammo types used. I do plan on doing this test again, after the barrel has been properly cleaned, as it's quite possible that it is carbon or lead fouled enough to effect accuracy. It really ought to have shot better than it did.

    • @314299

      Apparently a lot of people are not aware of the fact that they make target plasters/patches. I'm not rich but then again I'm not poor either, and other entities that "cant afford more than one target" include the military who issue and use target patches on their targets. Personally I see it as wasteful to use a new target for each group when patches make the target reusable. Of course there does come a time when the target has been "used up" and should be replaced, and I do tend to get a lot of use out of mine prior to throwing them out.
