- Next up is the Remington Model 514 which is a bolt action single shot .22 rifle circa 1958. Made from 1948 to 1970, these were produced in very high numbers and are a staple on gun store racks to this day. Here we explore it's design, patents, and optional models. Of note was the 514SB or smooth bore which led us down our latest rabbit hole.....the Mo-Skeet-O.

Thanks for tuning in.
This was my first rifle, my Dad paid $18 at Oshman’s Sporting Goods in Six Flags Mall, Arlington,Texas. He me shoot a box of shorts the first outing, then we packed up and left. A week or two later we returned , another 1 or 2 shorts, then he pulled out a box of LRs and watched my surprise.
This revealed itself as a pattern over the years, 42:51 stepping to a 410 full choke shotgun and at long last Grandpa’s pump 12ga, finally something with ‘kick’!
On the 514 after years of banging around in the closet, the bolt handle just fell off , having broken the braze joint at the bolt. Many years later I worked up the courage to send the bolt into Remington, about 2 weeks later a gunsmith called, said it couldn’t be fixed , (commented they came from the factory broken, probably to take potty on me), he said he was returning the bolt, but if I sent in the gun, he had a bin of bolts, but they had to be hand fitted. Well I didn’t send it, who knows why, and eventually found a gunsmith who fabricated and welded a descent bolt, rather better than the ‘bolt’ in the video.
It has always been accurate, the bolt has always shifted like a truck transmission, rough no matter the amount of oil, but never failed to delight the eye.
In my 30, Dad said if I learned to shoot on bad triggers, then shooting fine ones like his Rems 1100 or 721 was truly delightful. Such a careful, thoughtful method of teaching skill first, the hard way, then letting the finer things earn deep respect.
I miss him, of course, he wasn’t the average country preacher.
Thanks very much for the video, had no idea I had the last production year 514, a last surprise!
Sounds like you can certainly thank a great man for making you the man you are today. Takes a special person to have the patience and knowledge to not just teach but correctly relate the information. Thanks for tuning in and for the very inspirational memories.
I've got one of these, too. It was my uncle's and it was manufactured in '53. I was manufactured in '52. Close but no cigar.
Very often manufacturing dates were actually stamped at the end of that examples production and Remington was famous for making large batches early and stamping later. It might very well be made the same time you were.
Another great video from Milsurp Garage on a nice Remington rifle! By the way, don't disregard the "5" next to your date code letters. There is a site on Remington date codes by a guy "leeroys ramblings" where he goes into detail into the Remington markings. He indicates that the "5" means the rifle was manufactured to be sold to a Remington employee. Kind of puts a neat extra spin on your rifle.
Interesting. I always used to skip over that section on the way to the date code chart….I should have been paying attention! Thanks for the heads up.
I found one at shop down the street for $200. Thinking about picking it up. Thanks for your review
Let me know what you think if you bring it home.
Just printed the Store Brands Crossover list. Thanks for that. Been needing that list for awhile.
Yeah, no Remington….interesting huh?
They did the Mohawk brand but sold them all by themselves….like Savage did with Springfield. The Remington factory in Illion was built on the Mohawk River.
Very cool. Thanks - now I see one for sale and thanks to you I might be buying it.
Let me know how it turns out. Thanks for tuning in!
I had a routledge bore model 510 several years ago
Did you shoot Mo Skeet O with it?
Never got a chance to try that. I also had the Mossberg model (the model number escapes me at the moment) with the smooth bore that also had the screw on Rifle adapter.
Hi Nibs 😀
I just put a routledge bore on layaway. Thought it was strange that it had no sights besides a shotgun bead so I did a little research and found that they only made around 5700 of them. It's not the prettiest one but it didn't break the bank and I had to have it.
Nice. Now you need the whole set up!
@@MilsurpGarage I think that little skeet thrower is gonna be hard to find.

I knew a man that was in the US Army and was sent to Vietnam. In advanced infantry training they were trained to snap shoot with smooth bore 22 Remington rifles. I believe it was called snap shooting. Starting with larger targets and gradually going to increasingly small targets. The targets were thrown similarly to skeet shooting. In basic training they trained on the M14 rifle. He never saw a M16 until he was in Vietnam.
Hmmm, snap shooting. Interesting.
I have one of this model. It has been cut to 16.5 threaded. With a muzle brake, that way when I got it.
Sounds like an interesting set up. Thanks for watching.
@MilsurpGarage We have a lot of interesting things like that. We have an AMT . Copy of Ruger Mark l with a 16 inch barrel and 7 power scope. A Savage mod. 101
Looks like a single action revolver, except it's single shot. Swing out barrel and cylinder together.
I'm looking forward to hunting with mine tomorrow morning
Cute animals and drawings??? I hope you draw the cute ones BEFORE blowing their heads off….
The one I have has sentimental value. Belonged to my uncle.
Nice. I love those members of the collection. I only have one.
@@MilsurpGarage I have 4 guns that used to belong to relatives. A Rossi 92 in 357 that belonged to my dad, a S&W 18-2 that belonged to my grandfather, a Winchester model 37 12ga and Remington 514 that belonged to my uncle.
Dad had a couple other guns. A WesternField bolt action 22 that now belongs to my cousin`s husband, and a Hi-Standard Sentinel 22, don`t know where that one went to.
I’ve Got This Very Rifle My Favorite Single Shot Bolt Action 22 With a Weaver Scope 😀😊😀
