To explain the shadow the hedgehog comparison. The video game titled shadow the hedgehog was the first sonic game to have both guns and swearing be prominent. Basically fans feel that it was a level too dark for the series. Shadow himself is loved by the fans for the Most part.

I wish Ben had therapy for his trauma. He faced many horrors as a teen, but he acted normal. UAF events would scar anyone. I like OV Ben for showing his mental state. Half of the stuff that happen in UAF would give basically anyone else PTSD. I mean, ngl, it's actually one of the many things I like Omniverse Ben for. Plus, I haven't been pushing for it anymore, but actually seeing this [21:53] I kinda understand the point of 5YL Ben a lot more. I honestly really like when Fan-Projects like this make designs that are radically different then the canon ones, like Atomix and Way Big, it just feels a lot more interesting and gives the project more of it's own identity to me.
My main issue with 5YL was that I had a very hard time understanding what was happening in later chapters. Like, I seriously couldn’t tell what I was looking at. I’m hoping this becomes more clear in the motion comic.
Same, but with first few (since I stopped reading it by then) but I would like to mention that besides a few comic strips here and there, I don't really read comics like these but the panel placement in some pages confused me. Also when it comes to the big artwork like the page where Gwen and Ben were there and there's this alien (?) there or where Eon(?) became an amalgamation of Ben's aliens, I either couldn't see the art bc of the color choices or there was just too much going on for me to decipher what it looks like.
I feel the same way. The designs are overdesigned, the panelling is messy, the art is too much... It was genuinely exhausting to read through. I still liked it tho.

He did have a stand-alone spin off where he outright murked people and casually said words like DAMN and Hell which were big deals at the time and made him a symbol of edginess on the internet. By the year 2010, that just became his default character trait and stayed that way until 2019 I believe. So his vampiric, low voice, edginess was recent enough for people to regard him as an edgelord and bring it up on this reddit thread. Love your work man. Keep it Fizzy!
5:18 i kind of had to look up what alien atomix was because his redesign was so different that i thought he was a brand new alien entirely when rereading ch12, so i'd personally say that design fails to be recognizable enough
I actually really like that 5YL made some aliens more organic looking, the main reason is because some of them you look at and go, “how the heck does that have DNA”
Some of the redesigns are great for this reason. Armadrillo looks like an actual organic being. And the redesign for Bloxx, making him stone instead of legos, was genius. Some of the redesigns are rough though, like the heatblast pants he mentioned.

when you originally said you were taking a step back and no longer appearing in videos I felt a bit sad. while it may not have been your goal I enjoy your insight into Ben 10 and so I like your breakdowns and other content. It might not have been what you originally wanted but being the face of the channel feels like a good thing at least it does to me. thank you Rob for doing what you do in whatever way you do it.
I don't hate 5YL by any means, but I'll be the first to admit that I'm not huge on its art style. That doesn't mean the art style is bad by any means, and in fact it's certainly high-quality, its just not my cup of tea yk?
i'll be honest when im saying, i love the design of aliens like heatblast and fourarms, even brainstorm. but some designs like waybig just dont fit for me, but i still dont even hate it
there's one thing that it's kinda... weird to me. and that is the alternate Bens controlled by Eon/Technus. like, there's concept art of them and how their Omnitricces work, and... it's kinda disapointing that they just use master control to turn into the EVOs. i love them and all, but i'd like to see them use their Omnitricces like they "normally" do
Making a fanfic and it becoming so successful is the peak of any fandom. It's awesome that people can take something they like and continue it past its canon ending and explore the ideas while having fun with it. That's what creative work is all about; inspiring people to create their own worlds and fantasies
At around 15:15 , yes, Shadow has become the symbol of edginess, but I would describe it more accurately as "Wannabe Edge" because the most swearing in his solo game is saying "Damn" and the excessive gun use was just to keep up with all the shooters that were happening at the time. And to top it off, SEGA never has Shadow do any of this ever again and joke about it by changing Shadow's character from "misguided hero who wants to help and fix his mistakes" to "stubborn loner that's angry but still has friends". I could be paraphrasing or just be outright wrong, but that's basically how "edgy" Shadow gets.
about the story escalating to quickly, I think it is because of the pacing of the story, it does not have the pacing of your average webcomic/fanfic (it is written in visual novel format, not webcomic), so, thought the chapters are long, with them being so sparse and few, it does feel like the story is a bit rushed. what i would say about the comic (not really a criticism, just an note) is that the art is great, you put way more work on it than other comics I see, but I am not sure what you are do with the story, I feel like you are just having fun with some character you like (which is very valid and I like, but some people may find weird). An example would be the Orion squad, which seems like a set of OCs for us to watch their story and see them grow, but instead they are just random characters we don't know that are thrown in a battle they have no place being, like, they don't even add much emotional stake because we don't know them. I also think that the comic is just a small part of the project, the things I really like about it is the worldbuilding we get on 'and beyond' and other discussions we get on the fandoms. and the great art, obviously.
the thing with the story being just making some cool stuff because I wanna is very comum in fanfic, I just think that with this being such a great project people may have different expectations for it.

Agreed on the Waybig part. I would also like to add that the 5YL redesign severely downplays the Ultraman elements of the original designs. They are what made Waybig unique and awesome, IMO.
That Shadow the Hedgehog tangent really shows how much you don't know lol, in his game you literally do have the option to just murder people, and he does swear.
Honestly art style wise i really appreciate the look of 5yl overall watching your artstyle develop and seeing it become better and change over the years its one of my favorite parts of the comic
My problem with the clothing is that it’s made in a way that directly influences the alien. Juryrigg’s clothing is mostly for aesthetic appeal, and doesn’t change anything other than how it looks or functions. Wildmutt could’ve had many other types of clothes but a helmet with a horn just feels wrong
So about Shadow... ya when he is written wrong he is extremely edgy. Like his game is dark and brooding, he uses guns, swears, can choose the good or evil paths, and the game starts with an alien invasion that destroys a city.

Even ignoring the obvious plot holes with his backstory (literally everything relating to Gerald and GUN), the guy doesn't have real motivations. He just.. does whatever he thinks other people _want_ him to do and will switch on a dime accordingly.

I say this because the game has instances of mild swearing, among other things, that wouldn't be seen in a traditional sonic game. There's also the case of the game ruining the perception of the character for anyone looking outside the fandom for a while, but that's another can of worms.

I wrote the comment about allchemist. I teally like 5YL, its the only last thing we have of new ben 10 content. It just was my personal opinion on a design of an alien but I think mutiple aliens do look goofy yeah. But the story, the idea and the depth are all great. Some designs are very cool
1:55 I actually thought that Vlad was less powerful than danny, because he was exposed to a much smaller portal. I assumed that the reason he can trounce Danny so thoroughly was due to experience.
Not to mention the portal was corrupted by diet cola and he got blasted in the face and contracted acne, meanwhile Danny got his entire body engulfed in pure ecto energy.

Not gonna lie I wish the Inktank explored more about the alternate Bens and what are they doing in 5yl. That storyline where every Ben fought should have been longer like 5 episode minimum or atleast as long as the DNA arc because they was so much to explore
I feel like a lot of people struggle to separate preference from valid criticism. Because a lot of these complaints seem to be based on just how they would prefer the characters to look and act. It’s tricky, and I think everyone does it to an extent when the internet lets us constantly give our unfiltered thoughts.
Been following the channel since the season 4 classic breakdowns and here's something i want to tell. Every video on the channel feels like a well designed project, with a careful effort put on to every single detail and i always look onto these projects as being a full-fledged presentation of information in the most insightful and entertaining manner. Kuro's talk about him playing sort of a character really hit home for me, because sometimes we just rag on people by knowing just a thread of their existence. I don't know i don't find anyone more genuine on here than you guys( i know about the bodies) Anyways, about the critics, i must say that the over analysis of things often stems from ignorance and being judgemental. Having spend some time outside the social media bubble recently, i have begin to appreciate things more and i genuinely just enjoy 5yl for what it is. Yes i don't vibe with some character designs as well but the story is enough to hook me in and overshadow the flaws(being flawed is not negative guys). I don't why i wrote this but i just wanna write sort of a letter to you guys whose creative and passionate working style inspires me. I don't know why but i just find the messy stuff 😂around kuro and the various projects you guys remain busy in really uplifting and inspiring. Keep rocking guys As always, keep it fizzy ❤❤
Funnily enough, that's... exactly what Shadow does in his game. He doesn't say fuck, but he does say damn a lot and the occasional hell. Like, when he gets hurt he goes "dammit" and when he dies he goes "damn not here." In one of the endings, he tells Eggman he's going to "send you straight to Hell". And indeed, there are multiple missions in the game where you have to kill a certain number of humans. Granted, the game relies on a morality system, so you can avoid those missions if you want, but yeah.
15:35 as a sonic fan, the reason why shadow is considered edgy is because his backstory involves a kid being killed and his own game involves him using guns and (as you said) murdering people.

I think issue with Zim having that much of presence is that people havent seen his show. Like i never did and hes inclusion just felt weird and confusing. Its kinda like if in the middle of ben and rex crossover we got Ron from Kim Possible and become part of the plot without any explanation. I dont remember if 5yl explained who zim is but i was still confused by him.
I had an idea for a Danny Phantom, Ben 10, Kim Possible crossover back in the day lol. Because they were all superhero cartoons on different networks. I was thinking of a play on Rise of the Tangled Brave Dragons, if anyone remembers that weird crossover fandom.

5YL's existence is like a miracle. A fan project with this much passion and talent put into it is always a blessing for fans. Stuff like this can often get taken for granted.
3:17 since in that stream where you were making a 5yl poster of every alien, and joked that he's an angry Scottish man, John DiMaggio would be perfect for him. Since John voiced a few Scottish characters. Example: my favorite character from Samurai Jack, The Scotsman.
The only alien I really had a problem with is Waybig. Other then that ai love your art style. It bought back some of the more grosser uglier sides of the aliens that Classic has that I felt Uaf lacked and Omniverse had less of
I was the one who brought up the Shadow the Hedgehog comparison in the reddit thread, so I should've specificied I was talking about the game and not the character- I absolutely love the character. The game however shoved in murder and swearing solely to "get with the times" in the 2000s. Like they showed Shadow murdering Sonic and human soldiers in the intro just for the edgy factor, which really gives the same vibe as Animo getting decapitated, it just feels jarring and like others said, for the shock value. At the end of the day its not that deep and I love the project otherwise lol.
ive personally adored your guy's stuff. the artstyle im neutral about, but honestly, the approach to how you guys designed things (the ultimates, the sayians, the redesigns) has personally inspired and drastically helped improve my own art skills. also as someone who was a huge fan of both danny phantom AND ben 10 growing up, the whole "5YL" project was mind blowing when i first found it! (and IMO, as a fan of both, i feel there's a healthy mix of "DP" and "ben 10" content in the story, keep up the good work)
I think the biggest issue with way big is that he’s just naked. He’s a fleshy alien in your design and that’s fine, but fleshy aliens should have clothes. That’s why juryrigg looked so weird in ultimate alien but looks fine in omniverse. Imagine four arms, but he has no clothes at all. That would look weird. I don’t expect every single alien to have clothing, but I think it’s kind of backwards that heat blast gets leggings and way big gets nothing. And some of the aliens are just kind of like… why? Like echo echo. I’m not a fan of his redesign. His arms being in his head just look so funky and his head is too big. One of the appeals of echo echo was how small and sleek he looked. When redesigning a character, you have to keep their original concepts in mind and stay true to their character. It’s fine if it’s just a random design you wanted to post, but for a fan comic you can’t really get away with that. A lot of the concepts are interesting, but not every concept needs to see the light of day you know? Also, it’s great that you’re giving other artists the chance to be in your comic through their designs, but you (unknowingly?) stated the reason why that’s a bad idea. Most artists aren’t gonna want their designs to be changed too much because… well, it’s their designs. And it wouldn’t feel like their designs anymore if they were changed too much. So by having different artists’ designs in the comic, it makes the art style really inconsistent and messy. For example, I think your ghost freak and xlr8 are great because they stay true to the character and don’t add too much to them that makes them feel like a different character. Wildmutt is in the middle because he does look like wildmutt, but the horn was maybe adding a bit too much. Maybe instead of it being a base design, you could’ve had it been a feature of your omnitrix to include battle armor for aliens that wouldn’t normally have them. Overall the designs aren’t anything to get upset about. I will say though that it is kind of hypocritical to say that the ghosts are reality warpers and that’s why they beat alien x, but when it came to green lantern beating him, his feats weren’t all too relevant anymore. Trust me, I hate that he won and especially in the way that he did, but I feel like we should keep consistency or else it makes us look really bad. The ghosts are reality warpers, but typically only in one domain. Time, dreams, fire, ice, etc. Rarely can they do it all at once. So I feel like alien x still should’ve won just due to his sheer presence and mastery over his omnipotence you know? My personal headcanon for alien x is that because only Ben is controlling him, he’s much weaker and doesn’t have access to his true powers/true omnipotence. In order for alien x to be at his strongest, he needs all 3 minds to become one and all agree on the decisions, or else his power is greatly diminished. Since having only one mind control alien x goes against his entire character. So maybe that could be a fun way to nerf his abilities without having to jeopardize his actual strength and character?
I have been avoiding 5yl like the plague simply because I know I'll like it but i simply don't have the time. As for the designs, I really love waybig, as I imagine his bones and spikes are made of the same metal as the original design is, but on an actually organic body. If I ever get the time, I look forward to seeing more of him.

Shadow the Hedgehog the game is what people are probably referring too, cause people wanted a sonic game with guns they did a Shadow game where he can use them and he swears a fair amount like saying, "Where's that damn fourth chaos emerald?" or saying "Damn!" when he dies. He also kills Dr Eggman in one of the alternate endings. The game isn't very good and is kinda the embodiment of edgy to the point where in one of the FMV's Shadow pumps a MP5 like a shotgun.
Honestly still disagree with the ghost being able to take down a celestialsapian, not because the ghost aren’t powerful, they straight up broken in some regards, but mainly that the ghost are still contained to the realms that the ghost world/real world are confined to as they are 2 sides of the same coin, not beings that full capabilities are literally beyond comprehension, though the ability to shift though time and space, their reality gauntlet, and other abilities will still give Celestialsapines a run for their money.
I totally disagree about the ghosts even touching alien x the fact that ben 10 cosmology is far beyond of that of danny phantom there is no debate lol alien x can reality warp at any level he wants whereas ghosts cant also they haven't shown any feats like ben 10 the fact that alien x created not a universe but the entire life among the ben 10 multiverse plus they have changed the plot multiple times and all of their weaknesses have been debunked lol.
The crossover part made me think of how some people say that the MCU is more multiversal even though we’ve only had 2 movies and a show that actually deals with the multiverse and only one of them was genuine by having other Marvel properties
My only problem with 5YL is that they killed off Animo. Specifically, the fact that they decapitated him, so it would seem like he’d be coming back as an albino gorilla at some point. But nope, his 5YL wiki page says “deceased”.
There was in fact an entire game of shadow murdering people and swearign at them. (However the swears were mostly "damn" and "hell" and as far as I know the murder is basically all totally bloodless. he does use a gun a lot though.)
5YL has pretty exceptional character work for all the characters involved, ESPECIALLY Ben and Eon/Divinity, and I don't think anyone can take that away from Kuro, and if they are, they're just hating at that point. I just think the plot way too quickly devolves into just one huge Dragon Ball fight, and I dunno, that's just not as interesting as the type of storyline we often get from Ben 10. Still pretty good, though. Waiting eargerly for the next chapter.
I going to be honest I watched 5 to 10 episodes of Danny Phantom but I got the basic plot of the whole thing and I am a BIG Ben 10 fan (original to omniverse). So I honest think you and everyone who is working with you is doing awesome job bringing them together and showing how they look 5 years later for both the MCs and their teammates. Also I like how it still semi-kid friendly and still funny. The one thing I want to see (which you are probably going to do later) is Ben and Rook in Dannys world. Also, nice job on Bens design the goatee from his future self was a nice touch. Plus Danny design and 5 year backstory was every well thought out. I hope you all keep make them because I all wonder what kind of crossover these two would have and I think you hit the mark. Can't wait for episode 4. So I hope you, your friends, and whole team have a great time and good luck.
I like 5YL, but I have my own problems. Rook seems to look too similar to his younger self(maybe add some very short hair on the back of his head, though still looks good), and some alien redesigns don’t scratch me the right way. Name atomix, I imagine a more kamen rider like body shape could work and still keep the sense of power, maybe a mix of shapes from blade, faiz, and a bit of wizard. Still great stuff. But, way big, I honestly feel he needs a more bright red, maybe that and a thin layer of gray under it to sell the armor look. Also, I imagine you could murder drawing tokusatsu monsters. Sam for ash
The only thing I dislike is that 5YL has more focus on the Ben 10 side of the crossover than the Danny Phantom side. As far as I know, Ben and characters from his world haven't traveled to Danny's world yet nor have the characters from Danny Phantom officially appeared (ex. Sam). If they have however gone to Danny's world, then this is a mute point.
5YL is not even close to being edgy, it is more mature but it's simply realistic. These characters are supposed to be adults, it makes sense. Anyone that says this is edgy are still in grade school imo. Keep up the great work Kuro and everyone else that has helped make 5YL what it is today 🍻
I said this once and I'll say it again, 5YL Feedback's design FUCKING SUCKS. I love the design he had from Omniverse and although his 11yr old design in 5yl does replicate his original design, the design his 21yr old self has just doesn't fit right for me. I'm a sucker for artstyles and character designs
Same like there's just something weird about how his tendrils come out of his god damn skull in the 5yl design and it's just a few steps away from where the tendrils should be.

Sonic fan here, you unintentionally made a great point about Shadow. The "edgy" jokes come from his spinoff game where he uses guns and says "damn" a few times, which is jarring when you compare it to the rest of the franchise...but in general? Yeah, it's not exactly "edgy" media, it doesn't even have blood.

My only issue with the comic is at first, it feels like a gen10 heroes united kind of story that fits well within the scope of the canon. . . that's how it feels at first. But when you start putting characters like Invader Zim in and. . . it starts to feel like a shoe-horned "gather all the IPs up in a single cross-over regardless of how well they fit together" kind of a deal. Like something requested by network executives to the marketing teams in the early 2000s. I mean, with a name like "5 Years Later", it sounds as if it's supposed to take a serious approach to set the headcanon future for both heroes. Like, this IS where THEIR future is and they just "happened" to cross-over. The universal tones align enough so it doesn't disconnect me too much. I mean, hey, danny's whole future character arc is becoming a scientist in this story, so, again, it narratively and tonally fits. But when you shoehorn more "comedy"-centered shows in. . . well, it stands out as much as catdog would, and I wouldn't like to hear rook dissecting what kind of alien catdog is. :/ Keep in mind, I would feel the same way even if you just randomly thrown generator rex in, and I LOVE rex. Over-crossovering the cross-over just defocuses the focus, and I don't exactly like that. I just prefer a tighter focus when it comes to scope, where anything less/grander just makes it feel like a less serious approach. That's just my personal taste though.
I think 5YL is pretty good Personally i was not a Danny Phantom Fan but from what little is saw of it back in the day(my sister was a big Nickalodeon fan while i was more Cartoon Network) I like it. Feels more authentic for both shows and plus i feel that every show can cross over through Multiverse Shenanagans thanks to a line from Justice League Crisis on 2 Earths. The designs for alot of the aliens i feel are also an evolution of Ben as he get older so the way you draw them is in respect to that. I like 5YL and look foward to more of the Motion Comic. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
I just don’t find the novelty in Danny Phantom and Ben 10 crossing over. Nothing is wrong with this story, it’s great. It’s just Danny Phantom and Ben 10 doesn’t necessarily feel like they can fit together. But I do give utter props to the entire crew who work on this comic. And congratulations on it becoming so popular, just the idea of a not so serious show crossing over with a show that takes itself serious just feels like if Spider-Man did a Spawn crossover.
How, they're both superhero cartoons starring teen heros with family members involved in the paranormal. Both have a really unique spin on their main superhero who needs to learn lessons about being a more responsible adult. Both featured large expansive universes with numerous recurring characters and complex lore. And both were headliners in their owner company's big crossovers. Both also played around with time travel and alternate dimensions to begin with.

TMNT is the Nickelodeon show that would work better as a Ben 10 collab. Danny Phantom has too much of a well, kid friendly tone. Danny Phantom is more suited for a crossover with Steven Universe than it is Ben 10
@@Z3r0_L1f3 Spider-Man crossed over with Invincible so I don't see why it couldn't cross over with the Crow. Ironically the Crow is LESS violent than modern Marvel and DC. You're bugging if you think Ben 10 ever took itself seriously barring AF (the worst of the three shows anyway). And even then it was still an episodic superhero cartoon with silly episodes and characters at points. This is the same show that ended with Ben recreating the whole universe from scratch. At a certain point it just became ridiculous. The Ninja Turtles aren't even a fraction of even Danny's power let alone Ben's, Ben would NOT need their help lol. They're just Turtles with weapons lol. People like these two shows for being massively-popular, unique superhero shows at the peak of their networks. I do think he could've thrown in Teenage Robot or El Tigre or Generator Rex though too. Turtles would be weird because they were based off of a well-known comic franchise. They're more fit crossing over with Batman or Daredevil.

Massive retcons and blatant lore contradictions from the first show (I absolutely LOATHE Kevin and Gwen being aliens and their powers being changed and the show making anything magical secretly an alien, or the Plumbers being an intergalactic organization for years), character contradictions (Azmuth and Vilgax's personality changes, Ben randomly not wearing the watch at the beginning of the show, them not even trying to fit with the 10k timeline to the point they made a completely different Ben 10 Thousand later), and just general character decisions I disagreed with like making Gwen date Kevin/Ben's love life being a revolving door (should've just made Gwen his love interest like the original idea instead of his cousin), or Ben's personality reverting back to ten years old after defeating the Highbreed in season 3 when in the first two seasons he acted mature and got along with Gwen. Speaking of Highbreeds, I hate how by the end of UA Ben had saved the universe multiple times and there was constant time travel and dimensional travel. I just miss the smaller stakes of the original show where usually Ben would save a few people's lives every episode and only occasionally the world. I love Omniverse but it had this issue too. I like Kuro but who the fuck cares if Ben can beat Goku though, overpowered characters are boring and only work if they reach that at the end of the show. Often they'll still get defeated in dumb way anyway, which happened to Ben too. The tone shift was also reflected in the art style shift, it went from this unique animeish comic book style with elements of 90s grossout to this C-tier DCAU knockoff. Some redesigns are awful like Charmcaster or Gwen or Vilgax, and it's reflected in the alien designs too, which just looked like guys in suits because this became a superhero cartoon instead of an adventure show. They were also just repeats of the originals. It's a very dull art style, I love Dwayne MacDuffie especially for his work with DC but it's obvious that sorta writing style doesn't really work with Ben 10 or the animation style. Mind you this show would also do dumb shit like have an episode about rodent aliens with gold poop. It ended weak as hell too. It's not a completely bad show, it had great ideas and the humor got funnier as it went on, but it felt like a slap in the face of people who liked the first show and its the weakest of the three. I much prefer Omniverse because it's a balance of both previous shows and it tried to undo the dumber changes UAF made. Sorry for the long rant lol. I like DP and Ben 10 equally? Ben 10 had less restrictions because there was no Butch Hartman and CN actually likes action shows unlike Nick, it had a more interesting and fleshed out lore but DP was more consistently good, it didn't fumble as bad as Ben 10, only really in the last season. And it felt more focused on the trials of youth whereas UAF and Omniverse just forget Ben is supposed to be in high school sometimes, which is what I liked about Ben in the original show, he showed his age. There's so much wasted potential with young Ben especially. Saying DP isn't dark is hilarious, the ghosts were dead people in the early seasons and there's an entire storyline about Danny's future self killing off most of humanity, way darker than anything Ben 10 did ngl. Future Ben was just a dick. Spider-Man comics aren't dark? Carnage doesn't ring a bell?
At first, it was hard for me to accept that Ben 10 and Danny Phantom are now in one universe in this fanfiction. It initially felt weird at least for me. But then I realized that we had a team up of Ben 10 and Generator Rex + a special episode in Omniverse where the Secret Saturdays were featured.
I think there's a way to change the tone, seriousness and quality of writing in a series without having to go the "more blood and darkness" route. If that's part of your vision and that's how you like things, that's fine too, but it will alienate some of the fans who like the more lighthearted tone of the series and who's only nitpick with it is its bad writing and underdeveloped characters/straight up butchered characters. I myself respect the tone of any show i made a fanfic about. That being said, i have only done so as a writing exercise and i do not share my work; more than writing advice it's just my own experience.

My main issue with 5YL was that I had a very hard time understanding what was happening in later chapters. Like, I seriously couldn’t tell what I was looking at. I’m hoping this becomes more clear in the motion comic.

Same, but with first few (since I stopped reading it by then) but I would like to mention that besides a few comic strips here and there, I don't really read comics like these but the panel placement in some pages confused me. Also when it comes to the big artwork like the page where Gwen and Ben were there and there's this alien (?) there or where Eon(?) became an amalgamation of Ben's aliens, I either couldn't see the art bc of the color choices or there was just too much going on for me to decipher what it looks like.

He did have a stand-alone spin off where he outright murked people and casually said words like DAMN and Hell which were big deals at the time and made him a symbol of edginess on the internet. Some of the redesigns are great for this reason. Armadrillo looks like an actual organic being. And the redesign for Bloxx, making him stone instead of legos, was genius. Some of the redesigns are rough though, like the heatblast pants he mentioned.

Making a fanfic and it becoming so successful is the peak of any fandom. It's awesome that people can take something they like and continue it past its canon ending and explore the ideas while having fun with it. That's what creative work is all about; inspiring people to create their own worlds and fantasies

At around 15:15 , yes, Shadow has become the symbol of edginess, but I would describe it more accurately as "Wannabe Edge" because the most swearing in his solo game is saying "Damn" and the excessive gun use was just to keep up with all the shooters that were happening at the time. And to top it off, SEGA never has Shadow do any of this ever again and joke about it by changing Shadow's character from "misguided hero who wants to help and fix his mistakes" to "stubborn loner that's angry but still has friends". I could be paraphrasing or just be outright wrong, but that's basically how "edgy" Shadow gets.

about the story escalating to quickly, I think it is because of the pacing of the story, it does not have the pacing of your average webcomic/fanfic (it is written in visual novel format, not webcomic), so, thought the chapters are long, with them being so sparse and few, it does feel like the story is a bit rushed.
what i would say about the comic (not really a criticism, just an note) is that the art is great, you put way more work on it than other comics I see, but I am not sure what you are do with the story, I feel like you are just having fun with some character you like (which is very valid and I like, but some people may find weird). An example would be the Orion squad, which seems like a set of OCs for us to watch their story and see them grow, but instead they are just random characters we don't know that are thrown in a battle they have no place being, like, they don't even add much emotional stake because we don't know them.
I also think that the comic is just a small part of the project, the things I really like about it is the worldbuilding we get on 'and beyond'
and other discussions we get on the fandoms. and the great art, obviously.
the thing with the story being just making some cool stuff because I wanna is very comum in fanfic, I just think that with this being such a great project people may have different expectations for it.

Agreed on the Waybig part. I would also like to add that the 5YL redesign severely downplays the Ultraman elements of the original designs. They are what made Waybig unique and awesome, IMO.
WayBig's design feels like a live-action adaptation of a Tokusatsu show, but wanted to make everything more organic.

Honestly art style wise i really appreciate the look of 5yl overall watching your artstyle develop and seeing it become better and change over the years its one of my favorite parts of the comic
My problem with the clothing is that it’s made in a way that directly influences the alien. Juryrigg’s clothing is mostly for aesthetic appeal, and doesn’t change anything other than how it looks or functions. Wildmutt could’ve had many other types of clothes but a helmet with a horn just feels wrong

So about Shadow... ya when he is written wrong he is extremely edgy. Like his game is dark and brooding, he uses guns, swears, can choose the good or evil paths, and the game starts with an alien invasion that destroys a city.

Looking at the comment, I think they're talking about the game rather than the character. I say this because the game has instances of mild swearing, among other things, that wouldn't be seen in a traditional sonic game.
There's also the case of the game ruining the perception of the character for anyone looking outside the fandom for a while, but that's another can of worms.
Funny thing about Zim being there, you could replace him with an alien that has every important detail to the plot line and it could still work. It's just a fun thing that the random alien is Zim

I actually thought that Vlad was less powerful than danny, because he was exposed to a much smaller portal. I assumed that the reason he can trounce Danny so thoroughly was due to experience.
Not to mention the portal was corrupted by diet cola and he got blasted in the face and contracted acne, meanwhile Danny got his entire body engulfed in pure ecto energy.

Been following the channel since the season 4 classic breakdowns and here's something i want to tell.
Every video on the channel feels like a well designed project, with a careful effort put on to every single detail and i always look onto these projects as being a full-fledged presentation of information in the most insightful and entertaining manner. Kuro's talk about him playing sort of a character really hit home for me, because sometimes we just rag on people by knowing just a thread of their existence. I don't know i don't find anyone more genuine on here than you guys( i know about the bodies)
Anyways, about the critics, i must say that the over analysis of things often stems from ignorance and being judgemental. Having spend some time outside the social media bubble recently, i have begin to appreciate things more and i genuinely just enjoy 5yl for what it is. Yes i don't vibe with some character designs as well but the story is enough to hook me in and overshadow the flaws(being flawed is not negative guys). I don't why i wrote this but i just wanna write sort of a letter to you guys whose creative and passionate working style inspires me. I don't know why but i just find the messy stuff 😂around kuro and the various projects you guys remain busy in really uplifting and inspiring. Keep rocking guys

Funnily enough, that's... exactly what Shadow does in his game. He doesn't say fuck, but he does say damn a lot and the occasional hell. Like, when he gets hurt he goes "dammit" and when he dies he goes "damn not here." In one of the endings, he tells Eggman he's going to "send you straight to Hell". And indeed, there are multiple missions in the game where you have to kill a certain number of humans. Granted, the game relies on a morality system, so you can avoid those missions if you want, but yeah.

The comic is great! I think we all have our criticisms and things we'd all do differently, but like, that's the crux of fandoms and fan fiction. I was the one who brought up the Shadow the Hedgehog comparison in the reddit thread, so I should've specificied I was talking about the game and not the character- I absolutely love the character. The game however shoved in murder and swearing solely to "get with the times" in the 2000s. Like they showed Shadow murdering Sonic and human soldiers in the intro just for the edgy factor, which really gives the same vibe as Animo getting decapitated, it just feels jarring and like others said, for the shock value. At the end of the day its not that deep and I love the project otherwise lol.

ive personally adored your guy's stuff. the artstyle im neutral about, but honestly, the approach to how you guys designed things (the ultimates, the sayians, the redesigns) has personally inspired and drastically helped improve my own art skills. also as someone who was a huge fan of both danny phantom AND ben 10 growing up, the whole "5YL" project was mind blowing when i first found it! (and IMO, as a fan of both, i feel there's a healthy mix of "DP" and "ben 10" content in the story, keep up the good work)
I think the biggest issue with way big is that he’s just naked. He’s a fleshy alien in your design and that’s fine, but fleshy aliens should have clothes. That’s why juryrigg looked so weird in ultimate alien but looks fine in omniverse. Imagine four arms, but he has no clothes at all. That would look weird. I don’t expect every single alien to have clothing, but I think it’s kind of backwards that heat blast gets leggings and way big gets nothing.
And some of the aliens are just kind of like… why? Like echo echo. I’m not a fan of his redesign. His arms being in his head just look so funky and his head is too big. One of the appeals of echo echo was how small and sleek he looked. When redesigning a character, you have to keep their original concepts in mind and stay true to their character. It’s fine if it’s just a random design you wanted to post, but for a fan comic you can’t really get away with that. A lot of the concepts are interesting, but not every concept needs to see the light of day you know?
Also, it’s great that you’re giving other artists the chance to be in your comic through their designs, but you (unknowingly?) stated the reason why that’s a bad idea. Most artists aren’t gonna want their designs to be changed too much because… well, it’s their designs. And it wouldn’t feel like their designs anymore if they were changed too much. So by having different artists’ designs in the comic, it makes the art style really inconsistent and messy.
For example, I think your ghost freak and xlr8 are great because they stay true to the character and don’t add too much to them that makes them feel like a different character. Wildmutt is in the middle because he does look like wildmutt, but the horn was maybe adding a bit too much. Maybe instead of it being a base design, you could’ve had it been a feature of your omnitrix to include battle armor for aliens that wouldn’t normally have them.
Overall the designs aren’t anything to get upset about. I will say though that it is kind of hypocritical to say that the ghosts are reality warpers and that’s why they beat alien x, but when it came to green lantern beating him, his feats weren’t all too relevant anymore. Trust me, I hate that he won and especially in the way that he did, but I feel like we should keep consistency or else it makes us look really bad. The ghosts are reality warpers, but typically only in one domain. Time, dreams, fire, ice, etc. Rarely can they do it all at once. So I feel like alien x still should’ve won just due to his sheer presence and mastery over his omnipotence you know?
My personal headcanon for alien x is that because only Ben is controlling him, he’s much weaker and doesn’t have access to his true powers/true omnipotence. In order for alien x to be at his strongest, he needs all 3 minds to become one and all agree on the decisions, or else his power is greatly diminished. Since having only one mind control alien x goes against his entire character. So maybe that could be a fun way to nerf his abilities without having to jeopardize his actual strength and character?
I have been avoiding 5yl like the plague simply because I know I'll like it but i simply don't have the time. As for the designs, I really love waybig, as I imagine his bones and spikes are made of the same metal as the original design is, but on an actually organic body. If I ever get the time, I look forward to seeing more of him.
Finally, another 5YL Waybig enjoyer. It thought I was the only one.

Shadow the Hedgehog the game is what people are probably referring too, cause people wanted a sonic game with guns they did a Shadow game where he can use them and he swears a fair amount like saying, "Where's that damn fourth chaos emerald?" or saying "Damn!" when he dies. He also kills Dr Eggman in one of the alternate endings. The game isn't very good and is kinda the embodiment of edgy to the point where in one of the FMV's Shadow pumps a MP5 like a shotgun.

Honestly still disagree with the ghost being able to take down a celestialsapian, not because the ghost aren’t powerful, they straight up broken in some regards, but mainly that the ghost are still contained to the realms that the ghost world/real world are confined to as they are 2 sides of the same coin, not beings that full capabilities are literally beyond comprehension, though the ability to shift though time and space, their reality gauntlet, and other abilities will still give Celestialsapines a run for their money.

My only problem with 5YL is that they killed off Animo. Specifically, the fact that they decapitated him, so it would seem like he’d be coming back as an albino gorilla at some point. But nope, his 5YL wiki page says “deceased”.

There was in fact an entire game of shadow murdering people and swearign at them. (However the swears were mostly "damn" and "hell" and as far as I know the murder is basically all totally bloodless. he does use a gun a lot though.)
5YL has pretty exceptional character work for all the characters involved, ESPECIALLY Ben and Eon/Divinity, and I don't think anyone can take that away from Kuro, and if they are, they're just hating at that point. I just think the plot way too quickly devolves into just one huge Dragon Ball fight, and I dunno, that's just not as interesting as the type of storyline we often get from Ben 10. Still pretty good, though. Waiting eargerly for the next chapter.
I going to be honest I watched 5 to 10 episodes of Danny Phantom but I got the basic plot of the whole thing and I am a BIG Ben 10 fan (original to omniverse). So I honest think you and everyone who is working with you is doing awesome job bringing them together and showing how they look 5 years later for both the MCs and their teammates. Also I like how it still semi-kid friendly and still funny. The one thing I want to see (which you are probably going to do later) is Ben and Rook in Dannys world. Also, nice job on Bens design the goatee from his future self was a nice touch. Plus Danny design and 5 year backstory was every well thought out. I hope you all keep make them because I all wonder what kind of crossover these two would have and I think you hit the mark. Can't wait for episode 4. So I hope you, your friends, and whole team have a great time and good luck.
I like 5YL, but I have my own problems. Rook seems to look too similar to his younger self(maybe add some very short hair on the back of his head, though still looks good), and some alien redesigns don’t scratch me the right way. Name atomix, I imagine a more kamen rider like body shape could work and still keep the sense of power, maybe a mix of shapes from blade, faiz, and a bit of wizard. Still great stuff. But, way big, I honestly feel he needs a more bright red, maybe that and a thin layer of gray under it to sell the armor look. Also, I imagine you could murder drawing tokusatsu monsters. Sam for ash
Honestly, your designs inspired me to do more stylize aliens of my own.
The only thing I dislike is that 5YL has more focus on the Ben 10 side of the crossover than the Danny Phantom side. As far as I know, Ben and characters from his world haven't traveled to Danny's world yet nor have the characters from Danny Phantom officially appeared (ex. Sam).
If they have however gone to Danny's world, then this is a mute point.
5YL is not even close to being edgy, it is more mature but it's simply realistic. These characters are supposed to be adults, it makes sense. Anyone that says this is edgy are still in grade school imo. Keep up the great work Kuro and everyone else that has helped make 5YL what it is today 🍻
I said this once and I'll say it again, 5YL Feedback's design FUCKING SUCKS. I love the design he had from Omniverse and although his 11yr old design in 5yl does replicate his original design, the design his 21yr old self has just doesn't fit right for me. I'm a sucker for artstyles and character designs

So I've never read 5YL but alw followed the channel and enjoyed the stuff made here. I've just had an appreciation for the comic considering the work and dedication it takes to make something like that, never mind the passion that requires as well. My only issue with the comic is at first, it feels like a gen10 heroes united kind of story that fits well within the scope of the canon. . . that's how it feels at first. But when you start putting characters like Invader Zim in and. . . it starts to feel like a shoe-horned "gather all the IPs up in a single cross-over regardless of how well they fit together" kind of a deal. Like something requested by network executives to the marketing teams in the early 2000s. Or one of those bad nick cross-over games _(sorry nick all-stars but you apply 2)._
I just feel like minor additions like that are just a bit. . . over-reaching? I mean, with a name like "5 Years Later", it sounds as if it's supposed to take a serious approach to set the headcanon future for both heroes. Like, this IS where THEIR future is and they just "happened" to cross-over. The universal tones align enough so it doesn't disconnect me too much. I mean, hey, danny's whole future character arc is becoming a scientist in this story, so, again, it narratively and tonally fits. But when you shoehorn more "comedy"-centered shows in. . . well, it stands out as much as catdog would, and I wouldn't like to hear rook dissecting what kind of alien catdog is. :/
Keep in mind, I would feel the same way even if you just randomly thrown generator rex in, and I LOVE rex. Over-crossovering the cross-over just defocuses the focus, and I don't exactly like that. I just prefer a tighter focus when it comes to scope, where anything less/grander just makes it feel like a less serious approach. That's just my personal taste though.

I think 5YL is pretty good Personally i was not a Danny Phantom Fan but from what little is saw of it back in the day(my sister was a big Nickalodeon fan while i was more Cartoon Network) I like it. Feels more authentic for both shows and plus i feel that every show can cross over through Multiverse Shenanagans thanks to a line from Justice League Crisis on 2 Earths. The designs for alot of the aliens i feel are also an evolution of Ben as he get older so the way you draw them is in respect to that. I like 5YL and look foward to more of the Motion Comic. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
I just don’t find the novelty in Danny Phantom and Ben 10 crossing over. Nothing is wrong with this story, it’s great. It’s just Danny Phantom and Ben 10 doesn’t necessarily feel like they can fit together.
But I do give utter props to the entire crew who work on this comic. And congratulations on it becoming so popular, just the idea of a not so serious show crossing over with a show that takes itself serious just feels like if Spider-Man did a Spawn crossover.
How, they're both superhero cartoons starring teen heros with family members involved in the paranormal. Both have a really unique spin on their main superhero who needs to learn lessons about being a more responsible adult. Both featured large expansive universes with numerous recurring characters and complex lore. And both were headliners in their owner company's big crossovers. Both also played around with time travel and alternate dimensions to begin with.

By your logic you can argue that Spider-Man and The Crow can do a crossover because both are about superheroes who have tragic lives.
TMNT is the Nickelodeon show that would work better as a Ben 10 collab. Danny Phantom has too much of a well, kid friendly tone. Danny Phantom is more suited for a crossover with Steven Universe than it is Ben 10

You're bugging if you think Ben 10 ever took itself seriously barring AF (the worst of the three shows anyway). And even then it was still an episodic superhero cartoon with silly episodes and characters at points. This is the same show that ended with Ben recreating the whole universe from scratch. At a certain point it just became ridiculous. The Ninja Turtles aren't even a fraction of even Danny's power let alone Ben's, Ben would NOT need their help lol. They're just Turtles with weapons lol.
People like these two shows for being massively-popular, unique superhero shows at the peak of their networks. I do think he could've thrown in Teenage Robot or El Tigre or Generator Rex though too. Turtles would be weird because they were based off of a well-known comic franchise. They're more fit crossing over with Batman or Daredevil.

‘Less violent’ okay yeah, spider-man is definitely much more violently beaten and stabbed by rhino or such. You do realise no matter how ‘violent’ marvel gets, spider-man will never be as violent as Moon Knight, Punisher or Deadpool. Even in their crossovers, Peter chastises Wade.

Massive retcons and blatant lore contradictions from the first show (I absolutely LOATHE Kevin and Gwen being aliens and their powers being changed and the show making anything magical secretly an alien, or the Plumbers being an intergalactic organization for years), character contradictions (Azmuth and Vilgax's personality changes, Ben randomly not wearing the watch at the beginning of the show, them not even trying to fit with the 10k timeline to the point they made a completely different Ben 10 Thousand later), and just general character decisions I disagreed with like making Gwen date Kevin/Ben's love life being a revolving door (should've just made Gwen his love interest like the original idea instead of his cousin), or Ben's personality reverting back to ten years old after defeating the Highbreed in season 3 when in the first two seasons he acted mature and got along with Gwen. Speaking of Highbreeds, I hate how by the end of UA Ben had saved the universe multiple times and there was constant time travel and dimensional travel. I just miss the smaller stakes of the original show where usually Ben would save a few people's lives every episode and only occasionally the world. I love Omniverse but it had this issue too. I like Kuro but who the fuck cares if Ben can beat Goku though, overpowered characters are boring and only work if they reach that at the end of the show. Often they'll still get defeated in dumb way anyway, which happened to Ben too. The tone shift was also reflected in the art style shift, it went from this unique animeish comic book style with elements of 90s grossout to this C-tier DCAU knockoff. Some redesigns are awful like Charmcaster or Gwen or Vilgax, and it's reflected in the alien designs too, which just looked like guys in suits because this became a superhero cartoon instead of an adventure show. They were also just repeats of the originals. It's a very dull art style, I love Dwayne MacDuffie especially for his work with DC but it's obvious that sorta writing style doesn't really work with Ben 10 or the animation style. Mind you this show would also do dumb shit like have an episode about rodent aliens with gold poop. It ended weak as hell too. It's not a completely bad show, it had great ideas and the humor got funnier as it went on, but it felt like a slap in the face of people who liked the first show and its the weakest of the three. I much prefer Omniverse because it's a balance of both previous shows and it tried to undo the dumber changes UAF made.

I like DP and Ben 10 equally? Ben 10 had less restrictions because there was no Butch Hartman and CN actually likes action shows unlike Nick, it had a more interesting and fleshed out lore but DP was more consistently good, it didn't fumble as bad as Ben 10, only really in the last season. And it felt more focused on the trials of youth whereas UAF and Omniverse just forget Ben is supposed to be in high school sometimes, which is what I liked about Ben in the original show, he showed his age. There's so much wasted potential with young Ben especially.
Saying DP isn't dark is hilarious, the ghosts were dead people in the early seasons and there's an entire storyline about Danny's future self killing off most of humanity, way darker than anything Ben 10 did ngl. Future Ben was just a dick.

At first, it was hard for me to accept that Ben 10 and Danny Phantom are now in one universe in this fanfiction. It initially felt weird at least for me. But then I realized that we had a team up of Ben 10 and Generator Rex + a special episode in Omniverse where the Secret Saturdays were featured.
I think there's a way to change the tone, seriousness and quality of writing in a series without having to go the "more blood and darkness" route. If that's part of your vision and that's how you like things, that's fine too, but it will alienate some of the fans who like the more lighthearted tone of the series and who's only nitpick with it is its bad writing and underdeveloped characters/straight up butchered characters.
I myself respect the tone of any show i made a fanfic about. That being said, i have only done so as a writing exercise and i do not share my work; more than writing advice it's just my own experience.

Just remembered the name of the cartoon network crossover. It's called fusion falls which you can use a connection to. All of the crossover nickelodeon games. To expand the universe of your story more if you wanted to.
