I used to be a fan of Glitch Productions growth when they made Meta Runner. Their first show deserves so much attention just like Murder Drones and Digital Circus. The lack of attention they have on Meta Runner has been bugging me and the fans who are there from the very beginning. The show was good but it's conclusion was underwhelming. (It was obviously rushed because they had to get started with murder drones or they really just don't know what to end it off with Meta Runner..) Keep in mind that this is the time Glitch starts playing favorites with their own shows instead of loving them all equally. Also, It's really rare for everyone to mention Meta Runner these days because most people are focused on what's popular within Glitch Productions. I'm glad you mentioned this in your video essay. I could go in to much detail about it but I'll just say that Meta Runner really needs more love. Keep up the good work man 💛

MANY and I do mean MANY indie animations always has me hooked just like actual shows from things like Cartoon Network or Disney channel these indie animations have many creators with so much creativity and passion that have the freedom and people as well as effort put into these shows even if there not always FIVE STAR PRODUCTS they still have heart and soul like murder drones and the amazing digital circus
as someone who is an smg4 fan and was around for the announcement of glitch productions getting its own channel and everything, it’s been amazing to see that smaller meme channel turn into something that supports other creators with so much talent. they clearly are very passionate for what they do, and i’m so grateful they’ve opened up more opportunities for indie animators
okay but can we give some hand claps to Homestar Runner? -debuted with its own website on January 1st, 2000, literally kickstarting a the new millennium of indie animation -put out 10 years worth of content consistently that kept improving with time with great music, clever all-age comedy and memorable loveable characters -collaborated with fucking TMBG and Telltale -went on hiatus because the creators wanted to avoid burnout and had shifting life priorities -become roots to meme culture coining doge, burninated, etc. -work got them experience on actual tv animation including GRAVITY FALLS -returned to make the occasional episode and annual halloween special and made them feel exactly like they used to as if no time had passed (even after flash was made obsolete) -still made predominantly by two brothers who do all the writing, animating, and voice acting themselves and have never got into actual serious drama, even their social media is in-character stuff. like the brothers chaps are admirable and the true pioneers for how this stuff can take off, i wish you could’ve atleast given them a mention. Because Homestar was the first to get to what we are seeing the boom of today.
i actually remember watching red vs blue when i was but a small boy. revisiting it, i could physically tell the absolute drop on overall quallity of the show itself when rooster teeth was bought by wb. it was genuinely painful, and i hope one day someone else can pick it up so it can go back to it's proper glory
Despite indie animation being such a blessing, it still faces problems that big studio productions face. (E.g Murder Drones and Vinziepop’s works). Mainly the writing. I just hope it doesn’t ruin it.
The writers are likely new to writing stories, so there are going to be plot holes. They deserve more leniency because they are trying to break into an industry while being creative. They are going to make mistakes, but future series will be better. I still think Murder Drones isn't the worst offender.
@@DropDread RIGHT??? in the last episode everyone was about to DIE and they.. didnt even care??? The worst part is that the serious scenes were GOOD, the thing that ruined it was the jokes

Indie animation has proven that you can ignore the jerky companies and do it yourself and the community can finally just give the money to the specific people who actually made what we liked and we are willing to wait for what we want and we are no longer constrained by big companies and that indie could go mainstream
7:53 The way its animated reminds me of red vs blue with its robotic like camera movement as the fight goes on. Along with being able to feel the impact of each and every blow, due to a light and quick camera shake.
I honestly want to make indie shows inspired by stuff like Quentin tarantino, Cormac Mccarthy and rockstar games badly. Hell ive been randomly making scripts for fun
It just so happens what I'm trying to start my own animated series here on TH-cam, but like you've mentioned in the video not everyone has a whole team (I definitely don't, it's just me and my cousin doing all the animation) it's nice to know that there are other places to start with this series I'm making. Also I believe you did an amazing job on this video and I've already forgotten what I was even trying to say :)
18:11 I’m so glad to see Spooky Month getting some love. Pelo is one of the biggest names in Newgrounds animation right now, yet barely anyone pays attention to this charming horror comedy series.
One thing that I think you should've considered including is this one Poppy Playtime fan animator, Gemstin Production. He's been doing mock animated cartoon episodes of the "Smiling Critters" from Poppy Playtime, and if there was anyone who could be considered an indie animator, it's him. He does everything, from the animation and background, to voice acting all of the characters, which is impressive since half of the Smiling Critters are female, and if I recall correctly, he only uses a voice changer on like 2 of them. Right now, he's working on the 4th episode, which is a grand total of 43 minutes long. Check him out if you got the chance!
The success of indie animations on TH-cam here has actually helped me to get the inspiration to keep working on my own series. It's been very helpful (and I'm also teaching myself to animate) And I love silly shows like this! Ramshackle has probably been my favorite as of late.
To me, indie animations have always been a thing since early flash animated series like Salad Fingers. If I wanna be honest here, all the indie animations we see today all owe their existences to Homestar Runner, whom BFDI owes its existence to alongside Total Drama. And BFDI is probably the reason indie animations are what they are today. Without Battle for Dream Island, the state of indie animation as we know today won't be the same.
1:07 thats pretty cool. usually i dont mind AI so long as it is only there to enhance not to make (basically if you were to remove AI assist how much if the project would you lose). you should be the master of a tool not the slave of it
The main problem is it often starts "Small" but then if even moderately successful, or even just has a good idea and blows up the "indie" company often sells out and becomes like every thing else. While it's happened in animation, it's far more common in video games. Small indie companies put out kick starters for a game, basically steal all the money and either put out nothing at all or just some piece of trash. Or worse a big company notices it, buys them out and we get something like No Man's Sky where a small company started it, but then Sony I believe got involved.
no way bro forgot murder drones in the thumbnail edit: now that i actually watched the video most of it was blabbering and when he started talking about glitch he skipped the show that actually made glitch popular murder drones and did a whole review of sorts for tadc and i thought he would atleast talk about it
This popped up in my recommended. Good video, interesting breakdown of the current state of indie animation. One thing you missed that RWBY also had going for it is the creator Monty Oum was already a fairly well seasoned animator in spaces like TH-cam. His first thing to pop off was a fan animation of Samus vs Master Chief called Haloid which went on to get the attention of major studios. Between Haloid and his Final Fantasy vs Dead or Alive series Dead Fantasy, he ended up working for a couple different video game companies doing combat choreography and enemy AI in stuff like the Afro Samurai video game. He joined Rooster Teeth during season 8 of Red vs. Blue and is where that show started to have fully animated fight sequences. After a few years working on RvB he was able to pitch and start work on his own personal project, RWBY. Sadly he passed away around production of season 3, and while there were supposedly known plans and outlines for the show's plot, it's hard to say how much it would have differed were he still around past that point to head the project. The man was a god of fight choreography and knew how to frame a scene. His work is definitely worth looking into for any fan of animation, especially indie animation. He also just seemed like a really chill dude from interviews I listened to, very self motivated and, as an artist, pretty inspiring.
Meta Runner is the only indie animation I got into since it was really good since the show was pretty much based on a character from another series from the same creator. But sooner or later, I might give Murder drones a chance whenever I have the chance

My indie animation is going to be about Kenyon. (the main character of the series) in the pilot movie, Kenyon meets 5 other heroes(small introduction to our 6 heroes in first being Dax, an small character with the ability to create many gadget and an IQ of 5000, and 10,000 (when we see him as adult in a bad future timeline) with some training he is able to learn some magic such as force powers, he can also create a gravity room, his favorite gadget is the staff, able to handle to stop a crushing machine. 2th is Vixie an anthropomorphic fox girl with psychic/dark magic powers, the ability to use telekinesis to throw massive objects at her enemies, she hates being judged for being a scary demon fox, she'll also transform into a giant demon with enough rages in her emotions. 3rd is Elvin, a comic relief mage/wizard with the ability to create magic powers such as Turing into animals, animals that been extinct and even able to turn into animals that don't exist, he can also destroy a black hole, he'll like to tell jokes to his friends, how ever, he is the most serious one of the group once he's not telling jokes or goofing around. 4th is Clay a strong cowboy to able to jump super high and punches a meteor the size of the us, while he has been in the desert, he is scared of the ocean as he has nightmares of giant sea monsters, he is a bit of a hot head when ever Elvin does annoys him with jokes. 5th is Heather/Kira, an human alien girl landing on earth after escaping from her prison(her friend betray her and framed her, she'll get payback in the main series after the pilot) when she does meet the heroes, she is completely acting feral/scared, she flies super fast able to punch thought planets at a very young age, can out speed black holes, she also stops acting feral and scared once she finds out that our heroes are not evil, she'll also confuse technology with magic. The main series is going to be an action show for kids and adults to enjoy, I also wanted to stand out from the other adult indie animation shows on TH-cam, some episodes will be about one of the heroes, sometimes two characters, some episodes will either be about the heroes doing normal things when there is no villain of the day, or episodes with villain of the day. even tho I'm starting out as an very early animation creator I wish to wish to be part of the indie animation groups to prove I can create a show for everyone to enjoy not just for adults, like most of them do, If you want to know about the other 6 characters (2 being main background characters while the other 4 are the main side characters) I can update it again if you want to know about them and the 3 villains as our pilot villains (1 being the main villain with the other 2 are the side villains)
Wanna add that Madness Combat -- which started on Newgrounds -- has been going on strong for 20 years, has it's own game, and is getting a live action movie soon. And it all started with one man experimenting with flash, when that was still a thing. A lot of creators don't see success until they're well into their 30s and 40s, keep going at it and don't give up your dreams.
Don't worry Oranges, if it makes you feel better, I *definitely* remember watching Red Vs. Blue with my older brother circa late 2000's-early 2010's - The "We've been tricked, we've been backstabbed, and we've been quite possibly bamboozled" is still a thing I say on a semi-daily basis
OMG!! Thank you for referencing the Nazo Chronicles!!! My cousin was obsessed with that web series and would talk endlessly about the plotlines and character development. I feel like that Fanseries was essential in the history of Indie Animation even though it wasn't popular, and had more of a cult following than a huge Impact Hazbin or Amazing Digital Circus has had.
I personally think that indie studios still have a problem that a lot of corporations have (glitch especially) which is a perfectly good show getting pushed aside for a more popular one resulting in the fans and that show getting ditched. That is what upsets fans and makes them too similar to big corporations caring about the bottom line.

@@mk_gamíng0609It’s still better than the alternative of these shows never being discovered or picked up by studios in the first place. Do you think these creators would’ve preferred their pilots being hidden behind red tape and discarded into a pile of rejected pitches because they had no provable audience?
This honestly what happen to Infinity Train with CN. They posted in CN TH-cam channel and everyone demand it to be a series….

Hazbin Hotel definitely helped info even animation and made the difference, but it is not indie anymore. You can’t underpay over seas secondary studios and be indie anymore.
(It was obviously rushed because they had to get started with murder drones or they really just don't know what to end it off with Meta Runner..)
Keep in mind that this is the time Glitch starts playing favorites with their own shows instead of loving them all equally.

19:03 I love how Mr. Pelo is basically his own cartoon self in real live but tan and with a beard.

-debuted with its own website on January 1st, 2000, literally kickstarting a the new millennium of indie animation
-put out 10 years worth of content consistently that kept improving with time with great music, clever all-age comedy and memorable loveable characters
-collaborated with fucking TMBG and Telltale
-went on hiatus because the creators wanted to avoid burnout and had shifting life priorities
-become roots to meme culture coining doge, burninated, etc.
-work got them experience on actual tv animation including GRAVITY FALLS
-returned to make the occasional episode and annual halloween special and made them feel exactly like they used to as if no time had passed (even after flash was made obsolete)
-still made predominantly by two brothers who do all the writing, animating, and voice acting themselves and have never got into actual serious drama, even their social media is in-character stuff.
like the brothers chaps are admirable and the true pioneers for how this stuff can take off, i wish you could’ve atleast given them a mention. Because Homestar was the first to get to what we are seeing the boom of today.

strange coincidence that this came out just 1/2 days after MD ended
Despite indie animation being such a blessing, it still faces problems that big studio productions face. (E.g Murder Drones and Vinziepop’s works). Mainly the writing. I just hope it doesn’t ruin it.
indie animation is mid
I love murder drones but I have to admit they gave up much of the good writing for decent animation. Kinda disappointing
@@DropDread Agreed, I’m making a review of it rn and let’s say it’s not positive
The writers are likely new to writing stories, so there are going to be plot holes. They deserve more leniency because they are trying to break into an industry while being creative. They are going to make mistakes, but future series will be better. I still think Murder Drones isn't the worst offender.

Points to Lackadaisy and Monkey Wrench: Amazing!
Remember about bfdi and ava/avm were some of the earliest indie shows.

It's inspiring me to not give up on my story
The lack of any mention of murder drones is CRAZY. Without murder drones, there’d be no TADC. Remember that.
Black TH-camrs who have British accents who’re also nerdier than me are my favorites

20:53 Meta Runner mention!

@@Nightmare_boi1078 Who?

(the main character of the series) in the pilot movie, Kenyon meets 5 other heroes(small introduction to our 6 heroes in first being
Dax, an small character with the ability to create many gadget and an IQ of 5000, and 10,000 (when we see him as adult in a bad future timeline) with some training he is able to learn some magic such as force powers, he can also create a gravity room, his favorite gadget is the staff, able to handle to stop a crushing machine.

I personally think that indie studios still have a problem that a lot of corporations have (glitch especially) which is a perfectly good show getting pushed aside for a more popular one resulting in the fans and that show getting ditched. That is what upsets fans and makes them too similar to big corporations caring about the bottom line.
