  • Finding this incredibly designed sailboat for sale in the backwoods of Maine took some trekking but was well worth the trip. This is a 1979 Pacific Seacraft Orion Sailboat for sale is a "40 foot boat packed into the body of a 27-footer". We found it on the top of a mountain on a Bison ranch. It has more than you would imagine any 27' sailboat might have.... it's not perfect but it's also about 1/2 the price of the lowest one on the market. You just have to see it!

    This was my parents' boat, Chinkapin (they have both passed away- Dad's 10th anniversary of his death is today). They would be so pleased that others are appreciating their favorite "escape". It was a great boat- super maneuverable and fast. They won a bunch of local Power Squadron races around the Maine islands with it.

      @@stevenr8606 Super Boat lm 69 now just sold my 78 VW WESTFALIA that I spent 2 yrs restoring I wouldn't do it again but I would like that because there literally only needs to be cleaned up. I had a 23ft Venture which was similar with the bow sprit. Classic looking with swing keel. It was nice because it was on a trailer.

      Or you can get these boats for FREE($500) on Ebay... I Kid you not. GO look for them. It is hilarious what you can get for effectively zero. All these boats held by old people whose descendants do not want them and no one wants 27' sailboats. So, they are put up for auction/charity.

    Boat is in upstate NY now in my driveway...mast is getting painted, sails have never been used (! ) , new in bags, furling jib 135 and main, stack pack ordered ... having new bowsprit and sampson posts made by Amish, new cushions also...new wiring in mast, new LED lights getting installed...pulpit varnished soon and some teak work done, inside cleaned, should be ready for water next spring/summer...shopping for windvane presently, safety netting will also be installed...PEX to replace existing plumbing, and marelon valve to replace one older ....Waiting patiently for this day where all comes together...either Alexandria Bay or Lake Champlain will be called home next year....fiberglass work to be done when trailered to marina...overall a sound value I believe. I was lucky, I actually had a survey completed three weeks prior to the video on the same boat...Owner was great to deal with.

    This was the most enthusiastic boat review, I´ve ever seen in my life (I´m 45).But rightly so!
    I´m looking for a boat to sail around the World and I gave up on anything below 30 feet a long time ago, but this one really (almost) changed my mind.
    It will stay on my Radar though:) What a well thought through boat...really magnificent for its size.
    And your presentation is reflecting a spirit that is what sailing and boats are all about.
    I could switch of the frigging internet just now and get onboard to an unknown destination in an instant, it is so motivating! :)
    Thank you so much for this video !

    Thanks so much for your comment about my "thoughts." (The oh so hopeless Hunter 23) ~. Definitely a "sweetheart" here. (probably sold a week after you posted this.). All your comments are so valuable. ~~~ I am mixed about making my boat "sailable and trailerable". versus a chain saw and the dump. Maybe I can get it so it sails and then sell it. But I am facing removing the keel ~~~ (now under a tarp for the winter.). Oh well. Thanks again for all that you do.

    My screensaver is a Pacific Seacraft 34, WIB Crealock design. I call Pacific Seacraft boats passagemakers, you won't wish you had bought a more seaworthy boat when your situation gets dicey. On the con side, they cost more. Not so with this one. What a find!

  • @robertmills794
    @robertmills794 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    There's a lot to like there, and a lot to be skeptical about. The impact to the bow sprit is concerning and the freeze/thaw on the mount is not going to be good once it's taken apart. Even if the owner would take $12-15K it would need the same amount in repairs to get it right again and sea worthy. Still not bad, but a project all the same.

  • @dfharris03
    @dfharris03 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another amazing deal Capt'n Q. The bigger sister to this boat is not another Pacific Seacraft which were design by W. Crealock, but the DownEast 38 which was designed by Henry Morschaldt. Many of of the design cues are shared by both vessels including the wineglass stern and carvel planking on fiberglass.

    Was very nice to see this review. There was a PS 27 Orion that I was considering (which I did not get a chance to look at) before I bought my Westsail 32. I often wondered if I should have looked at that boat before it was under contract. This video makes me understand that the v-berth would not have been big enough for us and that I got a good price on my W32. Also good to see a demo of a composting toilet as I always wondered about them.
    Captain Q, would be good to hear your thoughts on the W32 if you ever looked at one.

    well a david(my spelling stinks) on the back for some solar and a dingy hoist interesting.... but that 1/4 berth is coffin. I'm a big guy so it's a tad small for a live aboard. that boat 5-6 feet longer... potential winner.

    This one's in my budget. Thanks, Skip. As today's youth would say, "Sweeeet."

    Some hot water and buffing and she would look great. Replace and repair the boomkin then check the condition of the sails and you off and running.
    Then next winter replace the cushions and your golden.

    I enjoy the walk throughs.
    The PSC Orion came with two layouts: A and C. This is the A layout. The C layout omits the chart table for a bigger galley and has a larger head and vberth, and smaller opposing dinette. There were options for tiller or wheels, although a small boat for a wheel. Also the coachroof was extended in later models to increase interior volume and included an additional set of bronze port lights (5 on each side) and another overhead hatch. The toerail cap is also teak in later models.. I do wonder if that's an aftermarket cap on this boat that may have been replaced.

      Thank you. This layout certainly was a charmer and worked well. Greta little solo getaway boat no?

    If I were single, I would snag this cute little thing, rent a local storage space for a workshop and my stuff and live aboard her. Very nice! Right price I guess. The repair looks pretty easy too. I just don't see us living aboard something this small. I've always had the numbers 40' - 50' in my head.

    It is great looking boat. Set by my house and clean it and replace the bow sprit and look at the compression post. I live in central Washington state. Would need a trail to transport it. It may be heavy for my 1 ton Dodge diesel.

    Boats and Bison? Oh my! Bison are amazing. Boats are awesome. Thank you for doing these.
    One question though. What's that white stuff I see all over the place?
    David, Tampa, Florida. :-)
    That boat is made for the shallow waters of Tampa Bay.

    I had a Columbia 8.3, similar vintage and size, nowhere near the space of this boat! I didn't have a proper galley or shower or chart table, or quarter birth, this was a well laid out boat great find. Thank you for sharing. Also I like your honest rating system, one of my dream boats, the Shannon(not so much now), didn't rate as high, very telling, as this weeks entry was better below, and I suspect from the rating as capable underway. These are great videos, I passed on an O'Day once primarily due to a compression post issue, but there is a fix it seems. I hope you all cross paths with a Tartan 27 and a Pearson 30 in the future.

      I had a 8.7 for several years. I loved that little boat. Spent many weekends anchored out at Cape Lookout, NC.
