    Hi Everyone! I am the owner of this boat "Departure" and she is a great vessel. We thought she had sold when a perspective buyer sent a sizable nonrefundable deposit. The buyer backed out as he could not put the rest of the money together So- this boat is still for sale and ready for new owners!!! Contact me (Scott )my phone number is in the notes below the video.

    That CD in the lazarette has a real purpose! Some folks will dangle them up the mast to help reflect and present a more visible radar image for other boats and especially those big blindly-lumbering ships. In fact, there are many DIY designs out there in Internetland to easily cut and glue a couple of CDs together to present a fuller reflective profile no matter the orientation. Frankly, I'd be astonished NOT to find several old AOL CDs in any older sailboat up there in foggy Maine. I'm led to understand that those silver mylar emergency blankets can also serve a similar radar-reflective purpose when draped aloft. There's apparently some debate as to the efficacy of such radar reflector hacks, but I'm in no position technically to judge.

    Our local tides do 22 ft in the English Channel. But in some places up to 42 ft Bristol Channel. Colvin was a maker of tough boats, sadly no more. The only downside to the triple keel is that it is not very good to weather.

    The Sea Rovers were a great family boat and along with Westerlies, MacWesters and others set a trend in the UK which lasted to the mid 80s. Often home completions they can show a wide range of finish but they are very solid plodders and great beaching boats. Our family of 4 are happily learning to sail around our Channel island Home in our MacWester Rowan Crown only 24 foot yet 7800lbs, which is a direct descendant of this boat. We love your show, great knowledge and love for boats of all types and vintages. Thank you!

      I bought a Macwester 27 project some time ago that I am looking forward to getting finished once lockdown allows. I am thinking of selling it though as time has shown headroom is an issue for me. After seeing this video I am regretting not getting the rover that was available for similar money at the time, while it is a little more dated it does have the headroom.

    Hello from west Wales here in the UK. Just want to say a massive thanks to you guys for another great vid, and thank you so much for mentioning New Kipper Tales. It was very interesting to hear that the Colvic Sea Rover 28 has crossed the pond, I always felt she was tough enough but could never confirm it, so I'm delight to see that lovely lady had sailed from the UK. We have been the custodians of Kipper for getting on for 4 years now,. I don't know if we every truly own a boat, we come and go but boats seem have many lives. We had all kinds of plans but work and then a pandemic have delayed things but we will get there : Kipper to has a lot history and is very well travelled indeed. The former owners lived on her for 16 years and travelled from the UK to the Mediterranean no less than 6 times though the canals of Europe. They spent years at a time cruising the Mediterranean, from Portugal to Malta almost everywhere between clocking up some 12000 miles. What a legacy she has and so far in our adventures we have hardly scratched the surface of what she done before or what is possible for her. We originally started making our vlogs so we could shear our adventures with the former owners who still love her so much, but we are delight that others have joined us and enjoyed the journey. Thanks again guys, and massive thanks to everyone that has visited our channel since your recommendation, 'fair winds and a following sea', we will be follow you vids with keen interest.

    The Wildlings, complete novices, took one one of these from wales via the isles of scilly to france. they tootled up the river seine to Paris, then hung a right and tootled on down the length of france on the canals. They recently sold the boat in Monaco no less and are currently boatless. I recommended your channel to them and i know he was very taken with the freedom 35 you showed us. I too have a fifty year old boat and burned out the armature of a bosch drill trying to install an exaust skin fitting. Back in the day,we didnt know just how strong fibreglass was so boats of that era are over built.

    Catalinas are rare this side of the pond, but Sea Rovers, Westerlies etc are the equivalent in the UK and there are lots of them. As the Captain noted, they are deceptively bigger than people think from the outside. The full keel and bilge keels are like belt and braces (you'd say suspenders!) for a boat this size and most have have a full keel or a par of bilge keels.

    • @steveporter3929
      @steveporter3929 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Complete novice here. What would you want to do to it to "get it into sailing condition"? I am not trying to be a smart ass, I am really wondering.

    • @YachtHunters
      @YachtHunters  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      All the boats we look at our old as much as 50 years old. It is to be expected that every one of them will require some attention and the degree to which you go to give it that attention and the amount of money you’re willing to spend on it will vary from boat to boat and buyer to buyer. But I think everyone out there knows that if their car breaks down right now there’s a pretty good chance their auto repair man will charge them $100 an hour to fix it. That labor rate is very similar to marine Boatyard labor rates are so use your wildest imagination and a little discussion with your local oh yard and you’ll soon find out what it’s going to cost. And it could cost 12,000 and $20,000 but you’re starting out with a boat you’re buying for 10 1520 or even $30,000 and when you’re finished you might have invested $40,000 in that boat but if you went out and bought a new boat it would probably cost you four or five times that amount today. It really all depends to what degree you expect your vessel condition to be in when you’re finished. If it’s just something you can sell safely that’s one thing if it’s something that looks like a boat built by Hinckley that’s another thing

    It was a big pill for me to swallow, slowing down to 5 knots. But i really like these hulls with the shoe.
    I live in Alaska and the things that i see me doing; resting on ground while i can get off the boat to beachcomb, explore timber camps, mining camps, fox farms, hunting and gathering.
    I am thinking a boat in the 28 - 34 foot range for me and maybe my dog.
    I wish it sailed faster, if it sailed any slower i would be underway at anchor.

    • @scottfuller2160
      @scottfuller2160 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The bracket that acts as a rudder safety line can also be rigged with two lines led to pulleys on each side of the deck. If the tiller broke, the lines can be used to steer the boat!

    What a great find. Needs some elbow grease, but it looks like it can survive even being dropped from an airplane.
    I wish North American builders would pay more attention to European builders, there are many gems like this on the other side of the pond.

    Hi. I'm from England. I know the boat type, in fact it was the same boat as wildings sailing first bought for cruising, so there's lots of video on TH-cam. I think it was about £ 5.5k. Great little coastal sailing yacht and built like a tank.

    • @YachtHunters
      @YachtHunters  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a little tank!! But a cute one with some great features too.... We were late to discover Wildings channel so it was fun to see the boat in action after we posted the episode. cheers!

    Sadly 90% of these boats are still in England. The few that are in North America seem to be centered around the Northeast US. That doesn't bode well for me in the Pacific Northwest. The climate and tides are very similar to England here. These boats would be perfect here.

    I think only a few places in the UK with very large tidal range, like the Severn Estuary... but a cheap mooring if your boat can dry out in an estuary. However, perfect for your summer holidays from the UK to Northern France, the Channel Islands and places like St Marlo - up to 40 foot range, and also the French Canal system. Must have been a story as to how that Colvic yacht ended up in the USA.. I thought Colvic's only sold hull and decks ? - back in the days when DIY was more fashionable and people did not have do much money...

    The first boat I ever sailed was called a Vivacity. It was my dad's first boat. If you've seen the video on YT of a small sailboat with A giant elephant seal on the foredeck that's a Vivacity. Twin keel made it possible to run it up on the sand at high tide in south San Diego bay wait for tide to go out and clean the bottom. Solid boat but not particularly suited for light air of southern California.
