When one considers that the US government gave GM and Chrysler $80 billion in 2008 ($115 billion in today's currency), under the TARP scheme, it makes you realise just how small Chinese subsidies actually are and how this is entirely politically motivated. That these subsidies are like many others around the world designed to promote EV adoption is actually a good thing

You forgot about the Inflation Reduction Act that is pumping another $780 billion to the US EV manufacturers. It’s hilarious that they make a big fuss about $3.7 billion BYD subsidies. That works out to less than $500/vehicle. Meanwhile in the US, domestic EV manufacturers are getting $7500/vehicle rebate.

It's designed to protect the useless and lazy legacy car industry from disrupters. Forgetting the economics or politics, we need cheap EVs in Europe and one thing we know for sure is that the legacy car industry will not, and can not provide that because they sat on their hands for too long trying desperately to cling on to their ICE cars. Incidentally, both the US and Europe have bailed out and are subsidising both the auto industry and the fossil fuel industry to the tune of tens of billions.

Subsidies are also given to US corporations massively, largely through tax credits. That is why BYD had a 10% higher automotive gross margin than Tesla last year, but (beyond spending less on R&D) Tesla had higher net. A company that claims to be highly profitable doesn't get away with never paying US corporate income tax and taking $5 Billion in tax advantages without being subsidized. In otherwords, Tesla net earnings after taxes/adjustments went up by $5 Billion last year compared to EBITA.
And subsidies shape their business decisions. For example, why did they open up the chargers to other companies? Billions in federal subsidies. Planned production for the next generation vehicle shifted from Mexico to US based on the subsidies and grants they get to build it here.

Regardless of which country's government subsidizes EV adoption, the ultimate benefit is a greener environment with less gas pollution. Tariffs and protectionism will only slow EV adoption.

  • @philgooddr.7850
    @philgooddr.7850 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

Here is what I think: This is a absolute joke, the EV industry has been excessively subsidized being non viable on its own: not only by excessive sale bonuses and tax breaks, but all mining, R and D, mfrs. industries and insurances are massively tax fed…It is time to put a definite stop to poor repairability, lack of durability and safety, price dumping issues and all those actions creating more pollution instead of reducing it !!! This create a need to manage our own safety, refusing to enter crappy Chinese taxi or Uber, a Boeing Max or B787 made in Carolina. This was not the case before when only extremes tasks and sports required a good risk assessment, before this entire responsibility of user’s safety was bounced back to careless manufacturers. The authorities have authorised vehicles in the trafic which are not roadworthy: the 14% rejection rate of Tesla ‘s to the first 3 years TUV inspection in Germany is evidencing this trend. Instead responsible authorities in place must remove potential liabilities off the scene, this is a sovereign task which begins to be totally lacking…
For instance, some quite minor EV accident damages are not repaired because a safe and comprehensive repair involves the expensive battery and repair cost is two to three times more expensive than fixing the same impact on a much more resilient thermal car. Quite often there also, the battery is the only non shock-proof item which must be replaced after an impact with some body work. But the entire EV is simply replaced by a new one WITH a new sale bonus that the whole repair amount does not get: a typical waste of « programmed obsolescence » our planet can’t afford any longer !!! Now, those insured high expense costs and all the ferry fires and building damages, chemical pollution and decontamination caused by impossible to extinguish till the end EV fires are not covered only by the liability insurance of the existing BEV fleet. But the much higher premiums of a correct allocation of the caused damages to the right insurance alone would make new EV sales nearly impossible. The result of such « open account » careless policy is that nothing is undertaken to correct, mitigate, downsize and prevent those much higher EV costs per incident. This gradually upsets taxpayers seeing higher taxes and insurances he directly related to those wastes specific to an non-viable part of our mobility. As a result those misappropriation of funds are gradually being made illegal on the simple fair trade polluter-payer principle basis. The wind finally turning, each EV producing country is trying to protect its own shrinking domestic market. The global lack of competitiveness of EV all together seems to be the main issue. Meanwhile the low Ev volume suppliers like Toyota-Lexus, Honda and Stellantis are less affected, do not reduce prices on larger volumes and can maintain a good profitability, not having to layoff many workers and employees like Tesla and unlike Toyota’s 33 billions GP in 2023 and 3,5 to 5 millions Hybrids volume from 2023 to 2024 , a 43% increase directly hitting many new BEV sales worldwide for the same market. Game over !

Subsidies are a tool to spread a new technology throughout society - just like it was given in order to motorize agriculture. That has been established. Therefore farmers have no more right to get subsidies. They would have to automate, use battery electric vehicles, hold animals more decent...or convert to vegan farming, use drones and other tech to improve farming in order to get subsidies again.

Weird perspective here. Both China and America gives subsidies for EVs that can be said to specifically benefit manufacturers who make vehicles within the country. Ok, that is same-same. US is also has a specific tariff in vehicles from Chinese brands, and is saying that even if made in the US, they should still have that tariff. China has no such restriction, now allowing anyone to set up and make vehicles in China, but it is China that is now being unfair?
I could understand a claim that China was being unfair in the past when they insisted on joint ventures, but now that no longer applies, it seems hard to argue they are still being unfair.
Heck, even in Australia state government subsidises EVs brands and the more each brand sells the bigger benefit that brand can be said to gain, and this helps overwhelmingly vehicles made in China, but is it really about some plan to help China, and disadvantage Europe?

The lack of substantiation makes me think that the allegations could be bogus. Furthermore, I have been trying to figure out who made these allegations but to no avail. If EU pick certain china car manufacturers and focus on that kind of "subsidises", then it can easily distort the picture. if EU put heavy levy on chinese EVs, i hope china will retaliate the same way to EU cars.

Regardless of which country's government subsidizes EV adoption, the ultimate benefit is a greener environment with less gas pollution. Tariffs and protectionism will only slow EV adoption and the free trade market.

European automakers make mostly ICE cars , Chinese make EVs. There should not be any competition. Let the consumer choose

German Chancellar currently visiting China with the biggest CEO groups from all major German businesses. With the collapsing EU manufacture there is mainly two ways to go, US or China. Going to the country who deliberatelly destroy EU probably not wise and those CEOs know it.
BTW, no one knows Tesla China took 61% equivalent of BYD's subsidy from Chinese government, YES, Tesla got a big bonus as well from China, can you imaging US can do this to an foreign businesses?

The US encouraged many Japanese car manufacturers to build factories in this country as long as they employed American workers.

Contrary to what you have been promoting Viking, there is no way all these Chinese automakers can't be backed and funded by the State... so it is 100% guaranteed to be sold under profit for the purpose of killing competition... there is a literal battle to the death that has been ongoing to see which model will prevail, Tesla, built according to cutting edge technology, and allowing profit incentive to guide manufacturing and company development decisions vs a Communist State backing 100 companies which makes negative profit, then taking the top ten and combine them into a 'tier' of automakers, yet in the end China always said it wanted Tesla to copy from... So technically one side stands on its own two feet, the other can't really exist without it to copy from
