    Why give Riku a new Keyblade? Why did it break in the Realm of Darkness of all places? As we learn little by little in Kingdom Hearts, very few things are by accident and what appears to us one day, can have a whole new meaning the next.
    Anyway I hope you enjoy this video with Riku and whether or not The Master of Masters had his eyes set on him in this theory!

    I think as time goes on, a lot of the events that happened in Kingdom Hearts 3 will get more context, boosting their importance and impact. We saw all the sub-title games do that for KH2, and I don't think KH3 will be any different. My theory here about Riku is just one potential example of this

    I always like to think his Keyblade represented his place amongst the other guardians, Soul Eater being a normal sword was him lost still in the dark, WttD was him slowly coming back into the light and still unsure about his place and Braveheart is him fully embracing his role as a master but also as a Guardian of Light and that he truly has “the power to protect” that Terra wanted him to have.

    This is an interesting theory, but I have one that lies in opposition: Riku isn't unsuitable as a vessel for the Master because he has strength beyond darkness, but rather, he is a perfect candidate because of that.
    This is my reasoning: Xehanort originally wanted Riku to be his 13th vessel, and manipulated him in those first 2 games (1 and CoM) to get him to that point. But, Riku eventually found "Strength Beyond Darkness," and as a result, Xehanort could not possess him the way he did Terra and the other Organization members. He then looked to Sora, then settled on Xion.
    Why is this relevant? Because in the UX finale, when the Master told Luxu about his plan for the vessels for the living Darknesses, he specifically said, "I didn't just raise you to be sacrifices. I made sure all of your hearts were strong enough to never be possessed by Darkness." So, the Master's plan for the vessels is not for them to be like Xehanort's vessels, to be possessed and destroyed like sacrifices, but for them to contain the Darknesses to be dealt with in a way that hasn't been told to us yet. In this context, Riku's "Strength Beyond Darkness" which made him an undesirable vessel for Xehanort makes him a perfect candidate for a vessel for the Master's plan.
    Anyway, that's my theory, what do you think of it? And if I got anything wrong, please let me know.

    • @TheLandiLodge
      @TheLandiLodge  2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      First of all, isn't it awesome that Kingdom Hearts can take little plot threads like this in opposite directions and be equally as awesome?
      Anyway, I think your theory is completely viable - However, the only rebuttal I might have is that if himself and the Foretellers + Luxu are 7, that leaves room for 6 more.
      I don't think there are another 5 characters like Riku who have had a full transformation through Darkness. You have your Terra's and Your Aqua's but I don't think their Journey is the same as Riku's necessarily, they didn't confront their Darkness head-on in the same way Riku did Ansem.
      However, it's equally as possible that this arc will actually focus on The Master preparing the likes of Terra, Aqua, Sora, Yozora etc. as potential vessels for Darkness's.
      I think that's a cool theory, if you have it in you to make videos - you should

      @@TheLandiLodge Hearing that from you really made my day, thank you.
      Also, about there not being others like Riku, in the UX finale, the Master also stated that he intended the Union leaders to serve as other vessels, leaving only one more vessel to find. I don't know if this means that he believes the Union leaders were suitable vessels already or that he would prepare them in due time like he did Luxu and the Foretellers, but he did have plans for them to be vessels. I think Strelitizia is going to be a target of the Master's along with Riku, as both are on "the other side."

    • @sharksfan232
      @sharksfan232 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@TheLandiLodge yeah, I do see that, but it could potentially be a plot point as to how Riku deals with being a vessel as opposed to the Foretellers. And if Riku turns out to work with the Darkness rather than just be a vessel for containment, the Master could just go to plan B and eliminate Riku along with the sealed Darkness.

    Honestly, the keyblade breaking to ment that Riku out grew the darkness and found that balance that disqualified him to being a vessel. Riku was at first embracing darkness and got overpowered by it; then fought to learn to repurpose darkness for good use when helping sora, the king and DiZ. When Diz's strange contraption exploded it somehow purified riku to the point of not only returning him to his normal appearence, but cuts him of from making dark portals.
    The Way to Dawn keyblade may of been Riku's oath to return to the light, but it also means that specific keyblade is probably fueled by the wielders darkness, as it was originally the Soul Eater sword, the lesser the darkness the weaker it gets....or its suppose to represent the balance he was trying to uphold for himself. He leaned too far to the light and didn't have enough darkness to give that keyblade purpose. A symbolism of Riku moving forward as a guardian of light, with knowledge on how darkness functions from personal experience.
    While it did have the gazing eye in it, I think it was more to watch riku's growth, finding a method to destroy/ overcome darkness.

    It is basically suggested the Formless Darkness in Ventus becomes Vanitas, then returns to Formless Darkness after being defeated in BBS,
    Now about Riku. Riku is seen by the Masters of Masters. The Master "wrote" him to be possessed by Xehanort's Darkness ( Ansem, Seeker of Darkness who is a Heartless). Heartless are a Form of Darknesss.
    To make it simpler, Riku is proof that the Master's plan to seal Darkness in the Foretellers will work. He is a Retro causal test . And he passed. Now the Master can use him on the Light side of the Board. To battle the Foretellers of Darkness. Of Course, this also prove the Master can save the Foretellers with Riku and Sora. Sora saved Riku. Riku saves Sora. They both save the Foretellers.

    • @domcarrasquillo2314

      Riku already saved Sora in DDD so this time itll be Yozora. The fact that yozora meets sora at all shows that yozora and riku were NEVER meant to meet.

  • @Dragon_Lair
    @Dragon_Lair 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I do think it will be great, whether this theory is right or wrong, to see Riku interact with the Foretellers. They are so adamant in being true to the light and destroying the darkness that I can see them seeing Riku, Sora and all the other Guardians of Light as people who must be destroyed. The very thought of darkness existing at all is exactly what seek to destroy.
    Ira thought the Master made the keyblades to protect the light from the Darkness, and basically rejected it when the Master told him that that is NOT what the keyblades are for. He wouldn't listen when the Master told him that they should focus on what comes after the Keyblade war. Yes, the Master of Masters was manipulating all of his apprentices but I honestly don't think he ever lied to them, he just never corrected them when they came to their own conclusions (see Gula hypothesizing why the Master gave him the lost page).
    I also really, really want to see Sora meet the Master of Masters. Sora is smart enough to know when to take advice, but has enough experience to know that Light and Darkness are two sides of the same coin and he has no problem with darkness itself, via his friendship with Riku, just those who use it to hurt others.
    No matter what happens, I think we'll see the Lost Master Arc show us what happens when those so devoted to the light become the tyrants and destructive force that they believe the darkness is.

    Keyblades are connected to your heart. They can be damaged and worn, but not entirely broken, unless it’s not truly your keyblade anymore. Riku is so different from where he was that his keyblade isn’t even connected to his heart. That’s why he needed a new one, and why his old one was so fragile and breakable. In my opinion

  • @maryscary
    @maryscary 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    In my eyes, I think Riku's keyblade breaking is representative of him no longer heading towards dawn while walking through the darkness and finally having reached the morning light. Riku's new keyblade Braveheart signifies his "strength beyond darkness" and that he is able to face the darkness without having to jump in aka his "immunity" towards darkness.
    I think it's that immunity that might actually catch MoM's eye since this is basically what he planned for the Foretellers: To have strong enough hearts so that darkness can't overtake/infect them.
    It would be interesting to see if Riku becomes a vessel for one of the 13 Darknesses since I believe that his darkness in the form of Ansem is a derivative of the Darkness that I think Xehanort hosted. Riku struggled to come to terms with his darkness and came out with a heart strong enough to withstand darkness, but is it strong enough to withstand Darkness? Honestly, in my opinion Riku's strength of heart probably is on the same level as those of the Foretellers.
    So there is really a chance that MoM might seek out Riku to be a vessel for Darkness.

    • @TheLandiLodge
      @TheLandiLodge  2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Absolutely love this Counter-Theory! But I have one rebuttal that honestly if someone could answer would have me convinced.
      So the Foretellers and Riku are nothing alike in terms of Keyblade Wielding - Riku has a balance of both Light and Dark, he uses and channels both powers. The Foretellers SHUN anything Darkness, in fact that's The Masters philosophy as well given he truly intends to defeat Darkness once and for all.
      But given that The Foretellers absolutely deny anything Darkness, whilst Riku has found a healthy balance of both and seems to believe both are necessary, how would these opposing views/styles qualify them as a Vessel for Darkness itself given that there seems to be no overlap in Riku and The Foretellers feelings towards Darkness? Let alone Riku's willingness to wield it.

    • @maryscary
      @maryscary 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@TheLandiLodge I think the reason why the Master would want Riku as a vessel for Darkness is because he plans to kill Riku anyways.
      MoM's original plan for the vessels was probably to have the light in their hearts erase the Darkness but he came to see that that doesn't work based on what Young Xehanort said: "Darkness lurks in the pit of everyone's heart."
      MoM knows Darkness can only be erased in a bodily form. That's why I think that by him saying: "I didn't raise you to be mere vessels" he meant something along the lines of "you're dying as heros but I'm still gonna merk you" as oppose to "the Darkness will die away in your hearts of light and that's it, we're good". He wouldn't hesitate to kill his students, after all he sent thousands of children to war.
      Whether or not Riku is at peace with his darkness doesn't matter to the Master because according to his plan, Riku is a goner no matter if he uses him as a vessel or not since if MoM achieves his goal Riku would be dead anyways because he already is a darkness user.
      So why wouldn't MoM use Riku's power not to give in to darkness for his benefit? It be much harder to find and train someone else to resist the temptation of darkness when Riku is right there under the Master's nose.

    Wow I really liked this. I feel like every one of Xehanort’s Darkness candidates are traceable back to the 7 Masters, 5 Union Leaders, and Elrena. Xehanort’s 5 versions represent the Foretellers. Elrena and Lauriam represent themselves. Xigbar of course is Luxu. Luxord represents Brain, or at least I believe he stands in opposition to the Master. Vanitas represents Ventus. Xion represents Skuld. Sai’x, as Organization XIII’s #7 represents the Master and his objectives surrounding the moon. Xehanort and Luxu knew Sora would fall into Quatradum by the end of the game, and therefore they knew Riku will follow.
      Since Riku will arrive where the Master is, there is no reason to spy on him.
      Plus, if the MoM only watches candidates, it means he hasn't truly chosen them yet.
      Riku has proven that he can do what the MoM wants - trap Darkness inside his heart.

    I really like this theory!
    It definitely make sense in a way.
    To me the reason Riku had The Way to the Dawn was always the fact that he walked the line between light and dark,
    so it stands to reason that if he can now control his darkness that this specific key blade may no longer be useful to him.
    I think realistically it should not have broken though.
    All the things key blades have been through and not a single one has ever been broken
    (exception: I haven't played or seen all of UX) so why his?
    Why didn't it just evolve like everyone else's?
    I know in BBS Aqua uses Master Eriques's key blade as her "master" weapon,
    but throughout the story their key blades evolved into their own master versions by the end
    (unless I'm mistaken and please correct me if so).
    I feel like his "ultima" or "master" key blade should have been birthed from his key blade.
    As if to evolve from the path between light and dark to the new stance of controlling both light and dark at his will.
    I read a blog with a theory on why his new key blade is like that of a blank car key that hasn't been molded yet which is kind of a cool idea but I just don't think it fits his general aesthetic the way his old one did.
    I really feel like The Way to the Dawn should have turned into a shinning light mid battle and transformed or evolved into something new that maintained it's general aesthetic but with a new twist like Terra or Aqua who's master keyblades just looked like leveled up versions of their apprentice key blades.

    It might end up being something like that, but considering how the tide of darkness was so goddamn op and it even gave Riku a fresh cut, I don't know how much it was plot and how much it was clumsy excuse for an image update.
    To me, Riku was the character that represented tye understanding of Darkness. Throughout the games, it is said that darkness Isn't something to erase or to hate, but, instead, something to mature through and to learn how to deal with. So Riku being that sort of inbetween character made him much more interesting than being someone who simply sides with the Light element.
    Although he still has plenty of dark based moves, so IDK.

    “Riku replica becomes Yozora"
    out of all the past versions of riku to use for the true organization 13 why use riku replica?? Especially After such a large period of time has past since C.O.M and not only use him for the true 13 but to use him to effect normal riku's arc in KH3
    And in the keyblade graveyard battles we see the riku replica fade away with his pass self, however. Besides Xion no other replica has grown its own heart as in terms of becoming its own being. And yet in every heart theirs light and darkness and we see that both dark and light riku replicas "fade" together.
    My theory is that the riku replicas merged and faded into a new heart....... Yozora
    In the ending of union cross we see the player character fade into Young xhanort.
    So technically every keyblade wielder has to potential to fade into a new heart when they die.
    And what do we see riku replica wield in kh3 ???? "They Way to dawn".
    A keyblade wielder not fading into light but into a new heart
    Riku replica faded into yozora's heart
    Replicas are "fake" or fictional a person/people soo when riku replica was reborn into yozora when went to fictional world. Verum Rex.
    And Nomura never explained what happeneds to replicas that become there own person once they fade into light or darkness. Xion only faded into Sora because she was defeated by Roxas and was only composed of memory's and not a half a heart like Roxas.
    In KH lore we are told time flows differently between the realms of light, darkness, between, data, and sleep. And we see that the final world and the station of awakening touch,
    And in the secret episode of KH3 we see that the final world touches Sora’s station of awakening before being consumed by Yozora’s world
    So the realm of un-reality could in theory flow alot faster then our does.
    This is proven by the new kh4 trailer
    Stating that he’s been there 7 days
    While back with the guardians of light
    It’s been a year
    This could explain how Yozora can appear to be in this time while his "past self" already exist. As explained by luxu / Xigbar in KHDDD of the rules of time travel.
    In Toybox we see something very peculiar,
    we get glimpses of verum rex's world as a video game.
    This isnt by chance,
    Why does young xhanort seem to be able to control the verum rex video game when he sends Sora into it??? Cuz its not just a video game about the world of verum rex. Its a illusion from the "book a prophecies"
    a book of prophecy has The power to foretell future events of other worlds but not in its entirety but glimpses.
    And we see what can be only be describe as verum rex falling into "darkness" in the trailer in the beginning Toy Box.
    And Just like the player characters does in union cross. Sora travels temporarily into the world to defeat heartless Gigas.
    I believe that the master of masters has told Yozora this and explained his past existence to him and thats how he's heard of Sora and was told to "save him".
    So that Sora can be one of the 7 crowns

      One thing here, in KH "unreality" _is_ "our" reality, as in the closest KH is going to come to being set in the real world, so it would actually be that time flows a lot faster in "our" world than in the KH world.
      Which would explain why it's been 20 years in the real world and only 2 in KH (if we count from the first released game to KH4)

    I've noticed another potential connection between the eyes on the keyblade. They're all related to the 13 true darkness or 7 pure lights. Vanitus is clearly one of the 13 darknesses. Riku's keyblade was given to Sora, but he was able to get a replacement when he joined all 7 lights together. He doesn't keep that replacement, but it's possible that his wtd keyblade was born from that. Finally, NoName has the power to unlock hearts, giving it a power that should be exclusive to the keyblade of hearts. It was probably also created from the gathering of 13 darknesses or 7 lights.
    Alternatively, we see NoNames created from clashes between light and darkness at the end of KH3. Vanitus is born from a clash of light and darkness, thus so was his keyblade, and WtD represents riku's struggle with darkness, moving towards the dawn. The breaking of WtD could be him no longer being able to support it with darkness

    on this "vessels for darkness" idea...
    modern era characters that have held darkness within, but maintained their sense of self and light include: Sora (his time as a heartless lasted until he was recompleted at the beginning of kh2), Riku (during/before kh2 when he took Ansem's form and powers, he even had the Guardian Heartless help him fight for a bit), and Ventus (after BBS presumably Vanitas returned to Ven's heart as "Darkness," since kh3 vanitas had used time travel to reach the present), and Terra (briefly in kh3 when his lingering will synced up with the Guardian and he spoke of his promise before retaking his body from Xehanort).
    Secondly, characters that had a "dark" version of themselves containing darkness but their original personality was tainted by it: include Xehanort, Aqua, Maleficent (she may also belong in the first group, except her original personality was either dark aligned or corrupted and fits better here) and *maybe* Eraqus. Luxu and Ava would be here if they counted in the "modern era"
    Lastly the surviving new union leaders Larxene and Marluxia were known candidates but we have not seen their darkness/heartless, only their nobodies. Same with the other bearers of an "ancient keyblade legacy" within the organization. The rest of the foretellers would be here if we count them in the "modern era"
    The other modern keyblade wielders have yet to show if they could become a dark vessel, and I do not believe they have been shown wielding a keyblade with the MoM's eye, (except Roxas, but Imma count that towards the MoM watching Sora's development as a potential dark vessel. Though Roxas would be somewhere inbetween the first and second catagory, Xemnas and Ansem have both confirmed his viability as a dark vessel during kh3 when recalling his prior adventures.)

      Sora wasn't really a Heartless once Kairi restores his human form. A Heartless, even a humanoid one like Ansem, is a Heart without light.

    I genuinely hope this theory is accurate, for two reasons:
    1. It gives a really cool reason for why the writers got rid of the Way to the Dawn keyblade.
    2. It's incredibly symbolic of past events:
    a. It brings his getting rejected by the Keyblade in KH1 full circle.
    b. After him getting rejected by the Keyblade so that Sora could have it, and him being rejected for a candidate for being the 13th vessel in DDD and Sora being selected instead, this would be the 3rd time Riku was passed up for something, and it would be especially meaningful if Sora was chosen by the Master of Masters to be a vessel of one of the darknesses in response to Riku being rejected.

Yeah... i could make a short book about this, but Yen Sid LITERALLY MOSES' THE SHT out of darkness to let him champions pass in KH3.... not to mention his control over time and space. I think him, Merlin and perhaps a couple more to come are embodiments of light. Lets not forget merlin at the very least granted passage to (if not outright created) a land with no time and an everlasting sunset for Lea and Kairi to train. Not to mention the book and skull with the burning candle on the desk of Yen Sid. Above all: WHERE DID FORMER KEYBLADE MASTERS KEYBLADE GO?!?!? Perhaps it was given to LUXU?!?!

  • @KewlImp
    @KewlImp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I hardily disagree. I think people put too much emphasize on the "gazing eye" in other keyblades. The only keyblade we know of that has MOM's eye is going to the No Name blade. With that said, I think it was to introduce the idea of your True Keyblade, the one forged just for you. Some people have also associated the gazing eye to darkness as well. There are many wielders who have a blue eye somewhere on their keyblade who all have been with the seekers of darkness. I think this is a little more surface. Riku lost his keyblade so he could get a new one. If that was going to be an entire thing, we should have seen it during KH3.

    • @TheLandiLodge
      @TheLandiLodge  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can vibe with this. Its VERY possible we are all putting too much emphasis on The Gazing Eye - but in truth, its tough to ignore and is still compatible with whats going on in the story.
      However, the wielders all being connected to darkness having a Blue Eye Keyblade would build into the point, no? If Blue Eye Keyblade = Tangle with Darkness, then of course theyd be potential vessels.
      As for it taking place in KH3? I dont know, Kingdom Hearts has always taken its time with supporting characters, mostly because Sora being the main playable character takes up the most screentime.
      Thanks for sharing your thoughts, only time will tell whether or not the Gazing Eye is as important as we might think

      Xehanort, for instance, literally stabs Eraqus, his best friend in the back. It is similar to Cain and Abell. Cain even has God's sign placed on his head so everyone knows who he is.

    • @stevenhiggins3055
      @stevenhiggins3055 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe. But they didn't have to do that.
      First off, most people seem to start off with their true Keyblade, as Keyblades emerge from the heart of their weilder when they first manifest. (Its explained that the light Sora saw just before getting Kingdom Key was Riku's heart, and the reason he got Kingom Key at that time was because he came into contact with it as it was manefesting)
      Second, at least in the case of Successors, they get their Master's Keyblade when they pass their exam.
      Third, even without all this, there was no need for WttD to break for Riku to get his new Keyblade. It was shown with Mickey that even when you have two, physically distinct Keyblades, you can still only weild one at a time. So Riku could have easily just gotten Braveheart and we could see him use either one depending on the situation.

    No lie, my heart shattered when WttD broke.
    Disclaimer: though I've been a superfan since the original CoM came out on the Gameboy Advance, I can't keep up with Union lore since a few years ago when I lost my account because of a sudden phone change and haven't been able to get it back. So after like a year or two of work into that game I wasn't exactly inspired to start over and just got behind...so this Union lore is actually completely new to me.
    Before Union, WttD symbolized something COMPLETELY different. With the transformation of Soul Eater into WttD only at the end KH2 (as he still had Soul Eater in ReCoM R/R, had to use one of Roxas's at the end of 358, and used Soul Eater all through KH2 until almost the end), it in itself symbolized redemption, thus its name. Even though Riku declares he's following the Way to Dawn in the ending of ReCoM R/R, he doesn't actually receive WttD until he reverts back to his original form and can no longer use dark portals because darkness has no place in him anymore.
    So for so many years it had that meaning to me, so to see it broken and tossed aside so easily in KH3 for some shiny car key that had no plot significance to its design really freakin' hurt.
    Now that I've had a minute to think over it more in context without calling KH out for retconning again like I wanted to at first, one could still say Riku's keyblade was intended to seek out dark vessels...when it was created. As Soul Eater, a keyblade that canonically grows stronger if used with darkness. But Riku's redemption and full embrace into the light and shedding of the darkness was the very thing that transformed it INTO WttD.
    So no matter how you slice it, WttD mirrors and encapsulates Riku's entire journey from embracing and growing in darkness to physically and entirely transforming when emerging into the light. In that respect, considering Union without thinking about KH3, that in itself is such a powerful message. That something meant for darkness could be transformed into light.
    Riku LITERALLY says himself at the end of DDD: "I know the way. Consume the darkness, return it to light." THAT. That right there, IS Way to the Dawn.
    Whiiiich breaks my heart all the more to see what they did to it so they could seemingly market a giant car key to all the new fans... 😭😭

  • @darkfire1408
    @darkfire1408 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the MoM's plan is to bring The Darknesses to unreality, where Light and Darkness don't naturally exist. There, they could be released and rid the realm of light of them forever. Alternatively, they could be vanquished if they're bound to a mortal form. Sora won't stand by and watch the Darkness invade a new reality, but he also couldn't let someone die just to be rid of them.
    I think Sora will oppose the MoM's plans because of this, despite not knowing a better alternative. There's a strong theme of self-sacrifice throughout the series. So Sora, knowing how many hearts he's kept safe inside himself in the past, takes it on himself to imprison these Darknesses inside his own heart, and carry them back to his reality so they can't hurt the people in unreality anymore. I think the Build/Divide mechanic Nomura mentioned will tie into this thematically, where Sora is syphoning darkness from his foes (Divide) and learning new abilities from it (Build). As Riku comes into the equation later on, he's going to help Sora carry that burden, housing some darkness within his heart as well.
    Lastly, I think Kairi, and the other princesses of heart, will use their light to vanquish the 7 darknesses. The clash between the two will, surprise surprise, summon Kingdom Hearts where Sora and friends can seal the Darknesses inside using the X-Blade.
