Honda XR650R oil and oil filter change service Changed my oil and oil filter roadside. Got a minor telling off from a miserable old bag. You can see more at www.rideybikestraveller.com
Howdy from Texas! Just got my 2001 XR 650R this weekend. I own bigger bikes and a YZ450 but I think the XR is my new favorite! Thank you kindly for the tutorial!
I stand corrected. There’s a strainer inside the crankcase. AND I forgot there’s an in-line strainer in the oil down tube which needs cleaning every oil change. I changed my oil roughly every 1000 miles. Don’t quite know how I missed the strainers in the workshop manual. If I ever get another I’ll know what to do!
Off the top of my head I really can’t remember. My feint memory is saying that they’re not the same size. Can’t be sure though. I’m sure the maintenance manual would shed some light on it. Easily found online if you don’t have one. Cheers
Good to know… I’ve been thinking about getting another XR650r. It’s been 10 years but I still miss it. Don’t miss the oil changes but I miss it nonetheless 👍🏽
@@RideyBikes XR...that bike have a soul,I bet you miss it...I'm 50 y ,supermoto tires during summer, enduro during winter...but mostly sm..:)..that kickstart is so cool IMO Keeper for life..safe ride man ✌
Is it possible to ride with another Person on this bike because i dont see any footpegs for a second person and if i can put them on is it registrated for riding with another person on the back ?
xXILu4Si0NnXx You could get pegs... It's an enduro race bike though. When i insured it I opted for no pillion cover as I wouldn't like my girlfriend screaming in my ear as i rag about on it. Cheers
Your checking the oil level wrong. You have the bike running and when you turn it off check it don't wipe the oil off the stick. If you dip the stick into the frame to check it you will end up adding way to much oil.
Alistair Mcgown Hey, i'm not quite sure I follow what you are trying to say. Are you suggesting that the level of the oil on the stick (immediately after engine shut off) is the level by which we should all measure? If I dip the stick into the frame after wiping (with a cold engine), I would expect to see an oil level near the minimum. If I dip the stick into the frame after wiping (with a warm engine), I would expect to see the oil level around half way up the dipstick. Needless to say, if the bike is hot i'd expect it to be higher... The engine pumps the oil up to the top of the frame so if the engine has run the dipstick will have oil very high up on it. This is why I wipe the excess off of the dipstick. To see the true level of the oil. Equally if i've run the engine and then removed the dipstick to find that there is no oil high up on the dipstick, i'd worry the oil pump is not working. Although i've never had that happen. Thanks for watching
You are wrong, I have the manual infront of me right now and the only thing he did wrong is screwing it in again, you should only let it rest on the threads to check the oil level.
Actually, I was not wrong to screw it back in. When I screw the dipstick back in it is for the purpose of starting the bike so that the oil can circulate through the frame and engine to give me a true level. If you watch the video right to the end you'll see that when I do the final oil level check, I remove the dipstick (after running the engine), wipe the dipstick clean, place it on the threads (not screw it in), then remove to check the level. Cheers
Love the granny @ 2:00. She is probably thinking, 'An XR650R. I used to have one of those.'
I wish... She scowls at me every... single... time... we cross paths. She's quite scary...
@@RideyBikes Guess the granny issue solved itself since then

Absolutely my pleasure! Cherish that bike! They are absolutely awesome! Thanks for watching.
Babushka making sure you don't spill. :)
And of course thanks for sharing at detail how to do the oil change, long life to xr650r. Thanks again
What I like is how easy you start it. 😮
Thanks for posting. I had a chuckle when the old woman asked what you were doing. 😂
Thanks Mate from Vegas!
that grannie made this video much more enjoyable..lol
I noticed too, is like what are you doing boy 😂
I use to empty the frame first , but it's the same in the end anyway.
Mine is a supermoto too ❤
Hey,nice video👍
Which tires are you running(sizes please & brand),I suppose they are mounted on the original rims?
Thanks
hmmm.... So long ago... I think they were Conti Trail Attack 2... 90/90/21 & 140/80/18. Thanks
Thanks mate!Rgrds from Antwerpen✌🏻
very useful! Thanks, mate!
My pleasure. Thanks.
hey man isnt there a strainer in the frame your supposed to clear out occasionally or is that only for the xr600?
No strainer in the frame. I’ve never had an xr600. Lots of Honda bikes have a strainer but not the xr650r.
@@RideyBikes thanks bud i was confused for a moment.
I believe there are two screens to clean occasionally, check the manual

@@RideyBikes im not sure if mine is missing or if i just cant find it. ill have to skim through the manual again and see exactly where it should be.
Are the two plugs identical? I am buying the magnetic one and wondering if I can just buy 2... thanks!

It's a full Akrapovic system. Only place left i think you could get them is here xr650r.co.uk/newparts/exhausts/exhausts.shtml

Thanks for checking it out, glad you liked it.
If you lean the bike over when draining it's less mess

What`s the green "hose" for on the underside of the right side of your handlebar ?
It's for adjusting the fuel air mixture...
how often do you need to change the oil?
I do it roughly every 600-1000 miles.
Thanks, bro!
