Thank you from the 63-year-old Left Coast dump truck driver just picked up a 2008 xr650 appreciate the helpful video
Heck yeah, can't go wrong with an XR. Thanks for watching!
Great video, very helpful. Used it to do 1st oil change on my 650. I first drained oil all over the front of the frame, then ran oil all down the left side case and frame, and finally created a river of oil all over the right side case, frame, filter cover, and floor. My two new quarts are already excited about their chance to dribble everywhere next time.
😂same thing happened to me.
Also, thanks a lot for showing the screen part of the oil system, I bet my dealership doesn't even know of that location. None of the other videos even mentions it. Thanks in advance.
Nice video. Brings back memories of my XR650 from 1993. Can’t believe Honda still makes this thing.
*Keith Schroeder,* These things are tanks and are classic. Thanks for watching.
You don't have to believe it. Whether you believe it or not, the XR650L is in a showroom near you.
It's true. Remain unchanged. Since it's birth only change the brakes and graphics, also I think the very first one was 600 but that was around early 80's. No one is still making these, carburator, air cooled, no computer, nothing fancy. I just bloody hate the "Smog Pump" on the left. And the front sprocket.
More more XR650L vids...and more cowbell!
Thank You, for posting. This video will come in handy, when I finally get an XR650L.
A good clear precise vid. These are a lot simpler than some bikes. Well done.
How to change the shift shaft?
Nice torque wrenches!
Great video! i have one question, any response would be much appreciated. Does the oil get filtered directly out of the chassis before entering the crankcase?
Ever seen a filter with this side out stamped on the non gasket side of the filter? I put the filter in backwards because of this. Maybe the filter was made for a different engine IDK. I rode my bike with the filter in wrong and seized the engine. I turned the filter around and the engine seems ok. I'm sure I probably did some damage though.
Thanks from Puerto Rico
Why not leave the oil screen out? Very very helpful video !!!!
Good information 👍👍👍
does this work on all years of the xr650L
Hello my friend how many liters for xr650l and my favorite stag and thank you with me 2019
Check oil after it reaches operating temperature. What temperature is that? Is there a temperature gauge?
The owners manual for the XR650L says to run the engine for 3-5 minutes to reach operating temperature. Then turn the ignition off wait 2-3 minutes then check the level.
Always remove the O rings before Spring the contact cleaner Because the contact cleaner will dry out the oil in the rubber O rings And before you know it the O rings will be cracking and leaking I'm just saying
🙄
I have a 2019 dealership did the first one, getting ready for the second oil myself. For such a simple old school style, lot there to remember. Do you have video on the smog pump removal? I already have the parts, I'm just afraid I will have to ReJet card after wards,, my local dealer won't help. I'm not good with carbs, tried with junk push mower to see. My eyes aren't that good. Oh yeah, in some videos, they say to crank over the engine, with the kill switch on to blow out remaining oil. Is that good idea or bad.
love the pig videos!!! i have the same skidplate. please do a video on installing an xr 400 oil cooler!! and maybe a hotter piston ;)
Thanks for watching. With the type of ADV riding we're doing that mod isn't really a need. Having the correct jetting on your bike can definitely help the bike run cooler. These bikes come pretty lean from the factory, which can cause the bike to run more hot.
Only one complaint...why not quote the recommended oil?? One of the main reasons i even came here...the model has not changed forever so there should be an optimal oil normally used....right?
What size is the crush washer? Thanks!
Going to pick up one of these tom can't wait
That's awesome! Congratulations on the new bike!
Is it bad for the engine if I did the block off kit for the smog pump?
No, that is a common mod for this bike. We are running ours in stock form. Thanks
Hi what type of oil the bike need...syntetic or mineral... I allways adding and adding oil allways disapear I Wonder if everybody has the same problem...if its normal...
This bike calls for a 10w-30 or 10w40 oil. If the bike is constantly loosing oil it may need some engine work and seals replaced.
Awesome, what type of foot pegs and handlebar risers are those? Much appreciated thx.
The pegs are IMS Rally Foot Pegs and the risers are Rox Speed FX Pro-Offset Risers.
We have a full build video showing everything we added to this bike if you want to check that out here: th-cam.com/video/Jc5KtgDkHhg/w-d-xo.html
How will il its fully at temp?
What headlight and light pods are you using? I need to upgrade my stock light on my 2000 xr650l.. what's the brightest I can go ( plug and play)?? Thanks.. great video by the way
This headlight is the JNS Engineering LED headlight and the pods in this video are the Trail Tech Equinox LED pods. The Trail Tech pods have since been discontinued but we carry the Thumper Jockey Enduro 3000 headlight kit that is very similar. Links to both will be provided below.

@@rmatvmc thank you. 1 other question. Please send me a link to buy new plastics. I can't find white body kits at all?? 2000 xr650l...need all white plastics except tank (prefer shorter front fender white) .?? Thanks
Can you Run Tire Moose on a Dual Sport?
I did not see you put a crush washer on the engine drain plug. Why?
*John,* You don't see it in the video, but we have one on it. Thanks
Very good, thank you !!!
Why did you have to remove the skid plate?
to get at the oil screen, but doesn't need to be done every time.
Mr. Mechanic(RMATV) >> > I've been looking at this bike for a few months & despite everything I've looked at, only today have I
seen the frame doubling over as part of the oil system. Honestly, is there any steel around the aluminum or what exactly acts
as a guard to stop the frame from taking any serious hits? And the filter on bottom looks like a flare fitting? Red Flags for me
right now & I suspect you'll tell me how reliable this system is & I'll ask IS there any other Honda's using the frame to cool the
oil or house it? IT's not a deal breaker but this really surprised me & I've had a bike that housed the fuel within the frame and
guess what happened to it?... Yup, it's started leaking. Perhaps my concerns will go away but I'd like to know about problems
if you've seen any? peace
It's a pretty bulletproof system. They've been doing this since 1983 when the first version of this bike came out (XL600R). Unless you plan on doing things this bike wasn't intended for, I wouldn't worry about it. -Charles
@@rmatvmc >> Yeah, I knew that & I've seen other "systems" within other engines other than bikes but after I dropped
this post asking you I leaned a little more about the seizing up of the 650 engines at highway speeds. I'll drop that info
to you if you care to see what more I learned but apparently there's a problem w/ the rings getting too tight after the
prolonged running at highway speeds. 3 engines(so far?) seized while running down the roads at speeds & the ability
to run along w/ traffic at speed is why I'm looking at this bike. 70MPH - 80MPH is needed to ride safe in traffic but
here's the video link about smoking engines & seizing in the 650L..... you're the "Pro", not me but the info grabbed
my attention.
MotoJeffy channel on youtube
th-cam.com/video/GP_-Wv4hfS4/w-d-xo.html
Honda 650L
XR650 siezed up or smoking oil
Ring Gap is too small & gets to tight at highway speeds. Prolonged high speeds
thanks for taking the time, I appreciate it all.... peace
I have an 85 XL600R, seems like the same process. My question is, can I remove and check the oil filter without draining the oil?(or spilling) thanks!
No reason too, just replace it every oil change. I do my oil and filter every 1,000 miles, cheap maintenance.
How many liters of oil is recommended after changing the oil and filter?
This bike took 2.06 quarts of oil. We go over the fill process starting at 4:15 in this video.
my skid plate was a royal pain in the ass with short bolts and those stupid frame hooking brackets when installing.. im dreading this lol..
Why do you have to remove the skid plate?
hello friend, what is the torque of this motorcycle xr650l. regards
Hello. What torque spec are you referring to ?
Cool deal.
That’s all the bike holds is 2 quarts ?
Correct.
How much oil will it take if I do not change the filter?
Change the oil filter when doing an oil change.
Socket size would help....
Why wasn’t he using a torque wrench? 🤔
My Honda manual says replace oil every 4,000 miles
Hey does it still have a kick
No this bike is electric start only.
The viscosity of that oil looks rather low, going by how it pours
. 10w40??
The oil used in this video was Pro-Honda GN4 10W-30. Honda recommends either 10W-30 or 10W-40.
Hi, 20 - 50w mineral oil?
Honda gn4 10w40
So if you're not sure if there is enough oil in your bike, let it run for 10 minutes. If it seizes up, then there wasn't enough.
I have this bike, checking the oil is such a pain in the ass, and very easy to get a false reading. They also have carb issues a lot, like to cut off at idle. Honda should offer a EFI version.
Or not. ..
I like old school carbs...perhaps add an effen kick starter..
Bro I went to check my bike after shutting my bike off an it shows it doesn’t got any oil in it WTF
7ft lbs on oil filter housing broke the bolt 😡
With small bolts always go by calibrated feel
correction....a magnetic drain plug obviously will not catch "any metallic pieces" as many metals wont stick to a magnet such as aluminum magnesium and even high grade stainless steels to mention a few metals likely to be found in modern engines ...just saying ...I know you want to sell magnetic drain plugs but just say it right
Very good point. Another gimmick
aweosome
Do not torque the frame plug to 29 ft lbs. I followed the service manual which says 29 as well but the plug never made it to 29ft lbs before the head of the plug broke off which gave me an evening of drilling out the plug.
*James Seller,* We torqued ours to 29ft lbs as stated in the service manual without any issues. What torque wrench are you using?
Rocky Mountain ATV MC Craftsman bought it new in January. Used it on multiple bolts with no problems.. Told the Honda dealership about it as well and they asked if it was supposed to be inch lbs. I think it's strange the the 12mm crankcase plug has a spec of 18 ft. lbs. and the 10mm frame plug is 29 ft. lbs. P.S. I'm a certified motorcycle technician.
*James Seller* It makes sense that Honda lists the 12mm Crankcase drain bolt with a lower torque value with it going into aluminum, where the frame drain bolt is going into steel. So maybe the drain bolt was either old, worn or damaged, causing it to break off. Honda's torque spec is correct in the manual. We haven't had any issues with our XR. Thanks.
Rocky Mountain ATV MC, It was the first oil change (500 miles) on my 2017 XR650L.
When your done with your torque wrench set it back to zero. I heard in time it will start giving fals reading. Not sure if its true oer not but i do it just to be safe.
2 quartz? Mine needs almost 3 quartz
2.06 quarts of oil is the correct amount when doing a oil and filter change. It's very common on these bikes to get a low reading and keep adding more oil depending on how you're checking the oil level. Towards the end of this video we mention how you can get a false reading.
I love how they tell you to torque all the bolts, and even give you the specs.,and dont bother to torque the bolts themselves....HaHa...
*Dan Hambrick* Do as we say, not as we do! ;)
2nd like🙂😋
Clean the screen everytime you change the oil, it'd s good way to identify your engines health before something goes bad. My 650R gets new oil and a filter every 500 miles.
Needs more contact cleaner
I must be the only one who, when I heard idle for 10mins before checking oil, I almost spit my drink out. 10 mins idling before checking oil level....that seems extremely excessive to check oil. So before every ride everyone idles thier bike 10 mins so they can check oil level, then go ride? Lmfao ya right.
I heard 1 minute
Good info but ten minutes is over doing it. Also regardless of people saying it's useless to check before you start cold... That's a wives tale because it's nice to know the poor bastard bike has at least some oil in it for starting and out should show up on the stick, pending where it is in the syphon cycle.
Magnetic drain bolts..? Really, has anyone ever seen metal dust or parts in the oil? The filter should catch them. I can see the meaning in a closed gearbox benefit from a magnetic drain bolt.
pollepost lmfao!!!
spend $90 , change that ugly headlight
