I just love how drastically Jakub's expression changes when he's done singing and people start cheering. It's so adorable! Because he looks so focused and just after that we get that beautiful smile.
this is such a wonderful interpretation! I like how he's not so staccato and uses vibrato to give the impression of cold and shivering. I'm truly convinced he's cold and the build up is so powerful.
He seemed to have sprung out of nowhere, decended from the heavens to enthralled us mere mortals. But he studied in the prestigious Chopin University of Music and Julliard, & he made his debut 5 yrs ago at 25.
What power art thou Who from below Hast made me rise Unwillingly and slow From beds of everlasting snow See'st thou not how stiff And wondrous old Far unfit to bear the bitter cold I can scarcely move Or draw my breath I can scarcely move Or draw my breath Let me, let me, Let me freeze again Let me, let me Freeze again to death Let me, let me, let me Freeze again to death...
This is a totally different approach to this difficult song. Usually the singer separates the individual syllables of the lyrics. Here the singer breaks into the full words with a sort of vibrato. I like it.
This is the best interpretation I’ve heard of this classic. Orlinski's use of vibrato convinces me he's freezing. Orlinski has set a new bar for the performance of this masterpieces
@@riohenry6382 yes, I like this interpretation more than Nomi's. Nomi did a great job of making a popular song or Purcell. Orlenski's version embodies the character. I would love to see the entire opera/play staged with him. Edit: (spelling)
This is the best performance of this I've found thus far. He doesn't go overboard on the staccato. He instead has an almost shivering tenseness to his voice, evocative of someone who is actually shivering cold. He accomplishes this by good tenuto on each of the notes, clinging to them ever so longingly. Excellent expression.
Klaus Nomi performed this not long before his death. It’s not as good as this performance, but incredibly poignant given his circumstances, give it a watch if you haven’t already🙏
@@Sonnymonster The Klaus Nomi version is the definitive version of this song. He had a more powerful voice and they had higher production values. This version isn't miked very well, you can hear the reverb coming off the walls. Instead the hearing the singers voice clearly at the forefront, he sounds distant, and the orchestra is playing the piece slightly to fast.
The difficulty of this piece is off the charts. Orlinski is a gift to the world of music. I wonder how long it took to get up to a performance of this tour de force?
Orlinski really communicates puzzlement, hurt, and offense at being awoken and disturbed.
I have watched almost all recorded performances of the cold song but this one seems to have what I felt others had lacked before, a hint of melancholy.
Quelle intensité dramatique dans cette interprétation qui prend beaucoup de risques J’apprécie aussi cette osmose avec l’orchestre C’est un bijoux un miracle de sensibilité émotionnelle Merci infiniment
Orlinski is such a joy to listen to and such a joyful man, not to mention quite a joy to look at. He should have a stellar career ahead of him. As a countertenor he conveys a masculinity which I think is rare. I have certainly marvelled at all I have heard him sing. His Tolomeo was a delight (and so cute when he came on at the end to receive his applause).
Can I just say. I love Jakub Orlinkski and his skill.. but this comment has had me in tears. I can not think of anything else when I hear the tension building and when he sings 'I can scarcely move' mixed with the intensity of his eyes. So THANK YOU for your hilarious observation. Much appreciated from my end at least.
the starting instrumentation, trills and harmonies of Purcell's Cold Song aria sound like Vivaldi's 1st Winter movement as well (written 20 yrs later), doesn't it ? Or perhaps it is how biting cold, shivering bodies can be captured musically. Would Vivaldi have been exposed to Purcell's music (probably) through travelling musicians or the purchase of music scores?
I've got acquainted with this track thanks to Klaus Nomi's wonderful rendition. I heard it for the first time in the 80s, no internet then, finding out where the aria came from wasn't an easy task! Orpheus, Dido & Aeneas, I've been pointed in many a wrong direction... But then, King Arthur! Every version I listen to makes my soul a bit richer. Thank you, Mr Purcell!

I'm new to orlinsky and yes hes been packaged as a sex symbol but his treatment of this 500 yr old masterpiece is remarkable. The string arrangement is also remarkable and together they are..well, powerful indeed. Purcell is a genius. I say is because he still lives in a performance that captures thoughts and faith of our human resurrection in his time and brings it to ours with a remorseless insistence. Dont he, guvnor ?
Him being judged as a sex symbol or 'just a pretty boy with a voice' is not his choice, it's something some people just decided to do. I think his rendition is divine and he seems very natural, very approachable. It's sad that some fellow humans want to belittle his performance just because he's pleasant to look at.
For the sake of accuracy, it's only 330 years old. As for the musical interpretation, I don't know... I'm not a great fan of this revivalist thing. I don't see the point.
