- Mirages: Sabine Devieilhe - French Opera Arias. Album out 10 November 2017: wnrcl.me/mirages
Soprano Sabine Devieilhe’s signature operatic role, Lakmé, forms the starting point for her enticing album Mirages. A collection of opera and song in French, its theme is the exotic allure of faraway - and imagined - places and people. In addition to three numbers from Delibes’ opera, it features music by Berlioz, Debussy and Stravinsky and some rarer names: Thomas, Messager, Koechlin and Delage. Devieilhe is joined by mezzo-soprano Marianne Crebassa, pianist Alexandre Tharaud and the period-instrument orchestra Les Siècles under its founder, François-Xavier Roth.

@Berliner Stadtschloss Not EVERY performance needs to be done in full concert dress, their attire isn't "stupid" for a recording session. If you're under those stage lights and standing up for hours, things get tiring. Don't knock it till you try it, trust me. I've nearly fainted in my concert attire plenty of times, and would take jeans and a sweater over a floor length dress any day!

I understand that this was actually a recording session, not a rehearsal. I imagine they had to re-record that part where Sabine seems to playfully sing the wrong line, which makes Marianne laugh -- but then she shrugs it off, like she doesn't mind doing it again at all.
This is atleast 2 different runs. You can see a cut at 2:25 where her hands are in different positions. Not to take anything away from their performance. It was beautiful.@@stevecarson4162

The balance is exquisite -- it's so easy for the soprano to dominate in this duet, but here she is playing the character, not just singing the aria, and lets the mezzo through. Superb musicianship, and a true duet partner. Her tone and delivery of 'bleu' just before the reprise of the chorus for the last time takes my breath away every time. Stunning singing. And Marianne Crebassa is the perfect foil, authoritative without dominating, supporting the soprano line and allowing her to float it effortlessly without having to compete. Roth supports them sensitively, and the period ensemble make it intimate. I think they knew they had it in the bag after this take
Could not agree with you more !! This is the best version of this duet online !!

@@akeemadams7211 I agree, but it's a rich, wholesome darkness, like 90% cocoa chocolate.
This soprano is Very good. But in a few places, her voice was just a hair...and I do mean just a tiny hair too bright? verdant? for my admittedly unsophisticated ear. Just a personal preference. I'm partial to Anna Netrebko on soprano for this piece, as her voice is "creamier" and soft around the edges, it just goes down smoother. But that mezzo, wow...absolute perfection. All in all, they sounded magnificent together, gorgeously blended and spectacular voices both.

Without introduction or fanfare, I played this video on the big screen for my 3rd grade students. There were a few giggles and rolled eyes but, as the piece continued, my students saw how special this recording was to me.
The following day I played it again, this time with some biographical info on the singers and opera in general. There were no giggles.
The following day I played it once more. The children (8 yrs old) shared smiles with me and each other during each chorus.
On the 4th day, at the library, the children insisted that we share the piece with our librarian. The children introduced the song to her, named the singers and gave a brief summary of the story. When the music began, there was not a fidget, wiggle, or sound in the room except for the sublime music they had come to love.
ps They also love Ella Fitzgerald and Esmeralda Spalding. :-) but not like they love this duet.
Wow. Those kids will remember this song all their lives. I know I heard it at some point in my childhood, but don't remember the details.
Making people less mediocre one day at a time.
What a priceless gift you have given to your students and something that not many teachers are prepared to do. You allowed them to enter into the realm of sheer beauty not just once but day after day. And they learn as children have always learned ... by repetition and by the model of your example. You are a special teacher.
This gives me hope that some kids will not grow up as the TikTok generation. Bless you for sharing this gem with them.
Awesome! My high school English teacher was unapologetic about being a Shakespeare nerd. Twenty five years later, all of us guys from that class are middle aged dads and, you guessed it, Shakespeare nerds. This raises people up. It's "our humble assault upon the commonplace."
The first time I heard this was about 25 yrs ago. It was a cloudy cold late November day. I was driving my car and turned on the radio. A very light fluffy snow started coming down ever so gently. The snow flakes were the size of quarters. It was so surreal just witnessing this weather phenomenon. Then this duet started to chime in. The two sinced together at the same time. It was what I would equate to a religious experience. My heart was taken back. Something in the ethereal world had placed me in the moment to witness both the weather and the song dancing together as one. I’ll never forget that day.

So beautiful, so natural! This is the way a duet should be sung, not one person trying to be heard more than the other.
In MOST performances of this aria, the soprano completely overpowers the mezzo to the point where you can hardly hear her. In this one, the singers are in perfect balance, like they're having a conversation, not one trying to outdo the other!

Easily my favourite performance of this song. These two ladies compliment each other so much with their exquisite voices. I'll never tire of listening to it
Air. Softened tone. Playful calibration of volume and rythmic agility. Crisp diction and sustained lines without strain and unnecessary bravura. Sheer palpable joy of singing that music and playing it together is a marvel of musicality. Am I dreaming? No. That is just a group of really and fully engaged musicians that are in love with material. Kudos to conductor François-Xavier Roth and his orchestra Les Siècles - for creation the hypnotic sonic atmosphere that evokes the trance-like state of suspended reality in listener. A lot of singers do that duet for its obvious beauty. But to make it anew to glow and shimmer in warm burnished tones - that requires a special sensibility and possession of means to express it. These two marvellous ladies stands out from the crowd of many even famous performers that took this duet on. Sabine Devieilhe & Marianne Crebassa seem to win it. That unshowy commited to music attitude is a rarity at any time anywhere. Mesmerizing sensuos sonic experience that uniqely delivered by engagement of all of this duet's performers - is the evidence of their artistic commitment. It's a good enough reason to be grateful for the opportunity of being transported for 6 minutes to something that closely resembles outer spheres. Merci, merci, merci...
I love the way these two ladies look. They look as if they have just picked the kids up from school, told them to sit quiet while they have a bit of a sing song, brilliant.
Rodney, your premise sums up my opinion precisely. The power of the ladies voices juxtaposed with their every day appearance brings the whole piece alive. You half expect them to have a bevy in the pub round the corner after rehearsals, which is probably what they do.
I hope these ladies know how special they are and truly appreciated
I totally agree.

this is my absolute favorite version of this song, nothing compares to native french singers singing a french song !
There is definitely more context and depth than a non native French speaker singing this piece. Very imaginative and beautiful. The 1st time I heard the Flower Duet was when I listened to Charlotte Church. As a 16 year old, totally dismissed it lol. But. Years later, heard a different arrangement and I decided to give it another go and loved it.
I think that there seems to be more depth when a soloist is performing a piece from their native country. It's like an American pianist playing a composition by Tchaikovsky vs a native Russian playing the same piece by the same composer 🙂.
ABSOLUMENT ! MERCI 😊👍
Not only that, but also there is a softness and sweetness in their voices. Other singers try to sing it using all the power in their voices, as if they were singing a dramatic duet from an italian opera. Here they just sing it perfectly.
Terrible performance. Look what they’re wearing, so disrespectful. Slouching, fidgeting, folded arms. They look like they’re waiting for a bus. A complete disgrace.

This is BY FAR the best version I've ever heard. Far too often, the soprano overwhelms the mezzo to the point where you can hardly hear her. In this performance, both voices can be heard clearly and they meld together perfectly, without one drowning out the other.
@@stevecarson4162 You said it perfectly!
Fourteen decades of generations of people trying again and again and again , you're bound to get some amazing recordings in 140 years
I love the clarity of the sopranos voice along with the warmth of the mezzo. Makes for a perfect performance!
I have heard so many versions of this duet and this is by far the best.
This is the most beautiful piece I've ever heard.
That Mezzo absolutely killed it.. i mean they both did, but often the Soprano would steal the show in a production like this
great point. usually the mezzo is there but with out the definition that this one has. This truly is a duet.
IMO she is the star!
Did you see/ listen to the duet with Philippe Jaroussky?
The power and softness of the mezzo's voice is at least stunning
Exactly! She has such a mellow tone, loud or soft, low or high, her tone is lovely, warm, enveloping!
I love how she steps backwards at certain points so that the soprano doesn't get "submerged".
@@BrotherChad Same here! The mezzo is always wonderful to hear in any version of this duet
3 year old grand daughter sitting on my knee listening and watching this most sublime music and lovely artists. The best of times. Absolutely magnificent
Très très agréable bravo.... voix généreuses.... J'adore...
The mezzo added the perfect finesse to this piece. My ears heard beauty today!
Cheyenne Gibson just wanted to remind to listen to this again
They have to be native to the spefic point in Italia where it was created to have this passion love, tension and power to deliver such grace.
Yes!!
Charming. Beautiful.

This is a French aria, sweetheart (not Italian).
The blending of their voices and their harmonics makes this rendition incredible!!!!!!!
Absolutely wonderful !!

Où sont les LOTUS BLEU ???
Un seul mot à dire..... MAGNIFIQUE .......
These voices together are like fine crystal and silk velvet... perfect.
That Mezzo.... her voice is like a kiss.
This song shows exactly the beauty and difference of voices between a soprano and a mezzo-soprano, just perfection! And I think they're both french, the accent is very natural
They are French!
We have a few beautiful things in France, except our actual president!
😱
Love this duet and Marianne’s mezzo is sublime.....love it.
Elles sont françaises
It's very difficult to sing this piece well if you're not a native French speaker
I don‘t know the first thing about opera, but this song is so devine. I get goosebumps everytime i listen to it.
Ещё раз убеждаюсь, что голос - это такой же инструмент, как скрипка или любой другой!!! Браво певицам!!! Настоящий дуэт, брависсимо!!!
They look so young and normal. When they sing they are transformed into Angels. They’re incredible. Thank you.
This is the music to listen to when the whole world is falling apart in chaos...
Especially in my country: Brazil
Not nearly angry enough.
Gorgeous still. 🔥😋
When the collapse comes, and I shave my head and turn cannibal, I'll play this on loud speakers from my death truck.

I'm French and I've just realized that French is a beautiful language.
I am British and the Latin languages are my favourite to listen to, especially French, as I understand quite a bit, having started learning it aged 7 (a full four years before my peers) and studying it to A level standard.
My favourite language, c'est si belle! ❤❤
Just now?
It’s not the language that makes this beautiful. These ladies could be singing German and it would be angelic.
Nah... the language is still disgusting XD
I would expect to hear this at the gates of Heaven.
Absolutely. Music like this elevates our souls.
Actually. They’re playing it in the opposite direction.
you expect to be welcomed to heaven in french ?
but what if the angels dont want you to see the gates of heaven?

I think what can’t be understated is the work of the sound engineers. They didn’t simply recreate what it would sound like to be in the audience. The built a new soundscape from the ground up, something that has no real-world parallel but sounds natural all the while.
We are living in the era of Artificial Intelligence, but it will be impossible for any machine to reach this level of absolute beauty and perfection (both the composer, the musicians and the singers). This is why the human being it's so amazing
Whoooaa, that was deep.
You are incorrect. What do you know about ai to make such a statement?
You are half right. No man-made machine can ever reach this level of beauty. A machine would not even try. What would be the point? We are, however, not in the era of Artificial Intelligence. We are in the era of chatbots and learning algorithms under the title of "artificial intelligence" to generate buzz. These are programs that are programmed to repeat patterns. There's no intelligence there, artificial or otherwise.
@@fbarnea True AI would have no interest in artistry or beauty. It would require emotional intelligence, which a machine will never emulate, not without losing the privilege of being called artificial.
@@BadFluffy why do you think there is something special about emotions? Is there anything outside of natural reality that produces emotions or helps us understand emotions? You seem to state that emotional intelligence is not computational, this is something that mathematicians, physicists and philosophers have been trying to prove for centuries, and failed. Are you saying you found the holy grail?
The soprano possess a very beautiful well balanced voice, superb technique.... but the mezzo stole my heart. Will never forget her out of the world mesmerizing voice.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who cried when they started singing together? What beauty!
You are certainly not the only one!
VIMDODF makes me smile and joyful along with some tears at the profound beauty of the duet....

You're not alone I cried a river. I'm discovering this kind of music. This morning in my car I switched the FM by mistake just to be in shock listening to these beauty, masterpiece or whatever it is! Stunning! I'm already open to take a seat at the next opera and cry again and again. Wow!
You are not the only one, and tears come to my eyes, every time I listen to it.

@@teresanovak2039 Well the mezzosoprano needs to be good so that the soprano does not look bad (not sound bad). If the mezzesoprano is not skillful, she would be overpowered by the soprano and people would say the soprano is being a diva and tries to upstage everyone.
WOW!!!!! THAT MEZZO-SOPRANO'S VOICE !!!!! IT'S PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The blonde?
I’m no opera expert by any chance. I love listening to mezzo Huguette Tourangeau sing the duet with Joan Sutherland. However, this mezzo is amazing. It may be the advancement in sound recording, but the way these two voices complement each other, and each voice leaves space for the other is amazing. Forgive me, but I find when a mezzo is pitched against a soprano, the mezzo comes off second best - but not in this case. These two are wonderful together and the mezzo ‘tenor’ is jaw droppingly good!
@@jewando1 No, the brunette.
The blend of all the voices is the thing. It's what makes this version my absolute fave. So perfect - I cry every time.
