Haunting, soaring, clear, so beautifully sung and played. Thank you
In this sea of mediocrity and squalor that is TH-cam, every now and then you come across some precious pearls
I do believe this is what is what Henry Purcell would have heard in his day. It's an 'acting' voice, a mix of raw chest voice with falsetto, switching between the two when required. Also a great characterful face!
Yes it's very interesting and affecting, I have heard Andras Scholl sing this in pure countertenor which is very beautiful, but this approach is very striking and emotional.
Except for the original sheet music as written is sung an octave lower. It was Klaus Nomi that popularised the counter tenor interpretation of this piece, but it's supposed to be sung by a bass.
Hauntingly beautiful. Bravo x
I first knew the countertenor through him and his unrivaled voice is unimaginable and imitable to no one. He is old, but his passion is eternal. Please stay healthy ❤
@@ferminsalaberrithe reason you think there are no good singers today is because you keep increasing and imposing your own demands on what constitutes a good singer, replacing the human and unique aspect of them and turning them into little more than an object to be used in your own mind. There are plentiful good and great singers all over the world, regardless and irrespective of your idealisms.
@@downfromkentuckeh i do wonder if you would apply the same reasoning to any other profesión such a mechanic, a doctor or an architect. Im trying to Talk about the Craft not about our personal preference which i totally understand.
Never have I heard such an intense and deep interpretation, the singer's sensitivity to the nuances in emotions, the ensemble with such pure and resonant sound! It's incredible!
Agreed! Klaus Nomi is also right up there in delivering an intense and beautiful rendition :)
Robert, that was exactly what I wanted to write. With this one finally there is one en par with Klaus Nomi.

Agreed!@@markusgasser3884
I am sorry, that I hear Gerald Lesne for the first time in my life. Absolutely stunning performance. I am touched into deepest❤
Why is he seating ?
@@teekey1754
Performance?
Standing up is better for "performance" when singing, especially classical music, and the whole scene doesn't look like it needs a "performer". @@weiterimtext8134
Likewise... I've only recently discovered Gerald. Incredible artist. We have lots to catch up on ! ❤
@@teekey1754 Because he sings in falsetto (counter-tenor), he doesn't have to stand.
This man looks 70. I hadn't imagined you could sing like that at that age. Mind blowing

As a backwoods hillbilly, secretly a voracious consumer of art, beauty and music, and when it can be found, a delicious stew of all 3, I was warmed by this. It's 9 degrees in my house and there is ice on my windows inside. I'm quite comfortable under my quilts as I seek the glowing embers that kindle inner warmth such as this. Would enjoy him singing Arvo Parts heart in the Highlands.
Sounds nice.
Only in America will a person feel the need to be a “secret” consumer of art.
only in the mind of the beholder. @@perseus9428
Great comment, thank you! What els have you stumbled upon in TH-cam that combines such art, beauty and music?

Greetings from the Netherlands!
Now a day without hearing Gérard's voice is a day wasted... How could I live for the last 20 years without it?
Maravilloso!!
Stunningly good version of this idiosyncratic Purcell piece
I can feel the genius' fatigue. One of the most beautiful interpretations of the cold song ever heard!
Merci, Monsieur Lesne.
A man of his distinguished age brings an entirely new level of conviction to performance.
THIS SINGER IS PERFECTION.
I have never heard this before. Purcell was a genius. What a performance! His harmonic progressions are astounding. and rather like those in Vivaldi's Four Seasons 'Winter'?:-)
Most probably the opposite as Purcell was earlier than Vivaldi.
@@TonyBittner-Collins Thanks. was lazy and didn't check. I shouldhave known anyway. Best wishes. :-(
Danke 🙏.
Another TH-cam gift!! Really didn't know what to expect when the singer sang from the sitting position, but the position, with the lyrics in mind, "what power, who from below has made me rise" fits perfectly and reinforces the singers plea. Beautiful rendition!! The harpsicord and strings were perfect by the way.
Holy hell, I'm suddenly feeling emotions I wasn't even aware existed. If this isn't what true. genuine musical experience is about, I don't know what is!
Sublime .
BRAVOS MONSIEUR
JE N AI JAMAIS ENTENDU UNE SI BELLE INTERPRETATION
My goodness!!! Only a real talent can combine maturity and youthful flexibility in such a dramatic way... painfully dramatic! Bravo!
This is really incredible.
And that is REAL countertenor singing. Thank you.
WoW!
Bouleversant. Merci.
So extraordinarily beautiful. Thank you!
Bravo Maestro. Thank you maestro. A great sound that will last through the ages.
Fantastic ❤
Jean-pierre TURCO
Singing and emotion go very well together when it comes to Baroque opera
J'en frissonne encore...! Hors-concours...!
This is not a rendition; this performance INHABITS the music. It is Time Travel.
Still absolutely amazing! Brilliant. 👏👏👏
Merveilleux, monsieur Lesne, merveilleux!
A brilliant interpretation, intense, without pretentious effects. In my opinion one of the best recordings of this piece that I have heard so far.
(and excellently recorded ensemble!)
That piano … !!! And the violinists pure perfection
This is the most amazing version of the cold song I ever heard.
Superbe !
Certainly this is the best rendition I have both seen or heard.
The song itself is indeed genius. I love the opening chord progessions that resolve in a manner evoking a sense of coldness and awakening.
Gérard Lesne est un musical « monument « …
Mais vivant…🙏😇🌈
interpretation plus forte que beaucoup d'autres! Je ne connaissais pas cet artiste merci!!
Wow! I've never heard the before. This is such a haunting and expressive performance. Thank you!
In both Purcell's compositional gymnastics and the athletic performance by Gérard Lesne here lend incredible muscle and blistering intelligence to an unassuming melodic structure, empowered otherwise only by the harmonic crescendo.
I love this accomplishment and salute the musicians! Fantastic recording that I will save and savor for the future.
Il est fantastique, il touche au cœur. Admiration 👑
beautiful voice from old man. never expected
Wow! How did this gem get into my feed? This was fucking amazing!
Perfección.
Just when I was thinking the world was a bit crap...this thing came along and blew my fucking mind.
Thank You.
The world is still a bit crap, mate. You just have to look for the tiny hidden treasures.
I have watched many versions and they are incredibly varied and enjoyable, but this is just stunning. All round! .The treatment is superb. :-)
Wspaniały,wspaniały, wspaniały. Mistrz. Dziękuję 💐💐💐💐💐
Quel talent.... Grandiose, je ne trouve pas les mots.!!! Sincères salutations depuis Cracovie et merci.....🤩🤩
In this world of junk tv,reggeton and radio formula garbage, the music of Purcell remains an island of truth and humanity. The performance was intense, dramatic and musically insurpassable. Thanks for these moments of peace
Isso é ARTE!!!
Gives me chills.
Bliže sam uzvišenom,sve prestaje i počinje.❤
Mr. Lesne, your voice is wonderful, I have been listening to your performance for several days and I am more and more surprised every moment. This performance is truly memorable.. and the best wishes for you.
sublime
I cannot think of another song like this in any discipline, staccato yet fluid, unearthly yet so full of earthly passion.
Sublime...!!
Que c’est beau. Quelle belle interprétation. Merci
…fabulous!’….
The best. I have watched every performances I found in youtube
Bravissimo
This never gets bad. Can just hear it over and over and over again.
Amazing... and... what.a.VOICE ❤
Sublime! Envy the audience.
Bravissimo! Klaus Nomi performed my favorite rendition but this was quite beautiful!
If humanity leaves no other traces, let’s hope this recording survives.
Magnifique.
Heute zum Ersten mal kennen gelernt. Bin sehr beeindruckt. Danke
Sublime
What an exceptional performance!
La meilleur version que j'ai ecouté. Bravo - e bravissimi, tutti quanti!
saisissant !
Très beau!
Genius ❤
Very beautiful and very inspiring for me, as I am a countertenor as well.
Superb, powerful and sparse at the same time, with such feeling from all players.
