I think you guys should absolutely buy the MacBook Pro 14 right now in 2022 as your main laptop. It's probably one of the best laptop computers ever made and you can find them at discounted prices right now! As much as I think the M2 air is the go-to for most people, I think the pro opens up a lot more doors!

As a software engineer, I HIGHLY recommend this laptop. My only caveat was dealing with the apple silicon architecture not mixing well with Docker, but have since found a work around.

As somebody who does something similar I agree. The battery life is great and it’s nice to be able to take advantage of the multi-core processor. I’d upgrade to the 10 core non binned one just so you can
Get the best performance possible. Only thing is if you’re using 8+ cores at one time you can get maybe 2 hours of battery life but that’s expected. But for someone who needs the power it’s a great option imo. Also unless you’re doing gpu related work I don’t think it makes sense to get the max since the max only uses the extra memory bandwidth for gpu related tasks. The neural engines are the same on both. Plus if you’re really doing intensive gpu things like training models or something mwtbe he would make more sense to get a dedicated graphics card and run that on a Linux machine or use some sort of remote system.

Great review! I enjoyed every minute of it, and as a new M1 Pro 14” MBP owner, and a Senior Electrical Engineering student, I can confidently say that this MacBook can handle ANYTHING I throw at it like a champ! Whether I’m doing some Embedded Systems design, some Signal and Image Processing, Computer Vision, Schematic Design, or even running whatever I might need on windows, you name it, this thing can handle it! And you were one of the reviewers who convinced me to get one! Thanks!

I didn't finish the review yet, & I came here to say that this laptop is a beast. Been with me for 9 months now. The performance & battery life is incredible. Never regret buying it. I have the base model 14"16GB 512GB, didn't feel the need to upgrade to the M1 Max.

  • @eclipse2212

loved the video, I got my MBP 14" last week and its a complete package, from media consumption to video editing to casual college work, its just effortlessly flawless. The battery life's great and I've never felt the need to increase the screen brightness above 60% besides its really fun typing on this keyboard, it feels like it provokes me to type more and more ( hence this unnecessarily long comment ).
All in all, this is a great device and really great value for money specially when combined with the student discount, I confirmed my purchasing decision after watching your video last week and hence a BIG ThankYou from my side.

Great video! Having owned the 16" M1 Pro, and the M2 Air, for most things the Air is more than capable - the only time I feel bogged down is when I'm doing 3D modelling, and on occasion video editing, but because the M2 Air has better h265 encoding, it does render quite a bit faster. That being said, the Pro display is very nice, having the extra ports is nice, and being able to use multiple displays without a DisplayLink hub is much, much better. I definitely feel like we're spoiled with this gear!

    • @KyleErickson
      @KyleErickson ปีที่แล้ว +2

Wonderful video! With that being said, as much as I want the 16", I was able to test out both the 16" and 14" and boy am I drawn more to the 14". Not because of the weight/carry aspect but how... more versatile you are with the 14". Granted I dont do a whole lot of traveling for work or in general, I'm docked most of the time. So it makes sense to pull the trigger on the 14" and save a few extra dollars.
In addition - I was waiting to see what Apple was gonna come out with for their M2 line but as multiple (trusted) articles have mentioned, its prolly not worth the wait unless you need that little extra performance and other bells and whistles. I mean I could be completely wrong - but theres always something better every year - dont keep waiting.

I personally picked it up because it is basically being the cornerstone of my business alongside an iPad for more mobile/daily basic stuff. I did originally get a Razer Blade 14, but found the battery and having to be tied to a power outlet quite limiting (essentially only using it as a desktop).
So selling off the Razer, using the Macbook as my daily work driver, and building a desktop down the line, and maybe picking up a Steam Deck earlier :D

Been using the M1 14" inch for almost a year. It's not only the best laptop ever made, it's probably the best computer ever made. The performance is insane and it handles anything you throw at it. The build quality, keyboard and display is just downright awesome. I still haven't heard the fan kick on at any time and currently I have 865 browser tabs open, Spotify, Notes, Photoshop, VSCode and Sublime running and everything is perfectly smooth and the computer is absolutely silent. I've been using it in clamshell mode connected to a 4K 32" inch monitor most of the time and there is no issue with the heat and keyboard is perfect.
If you're looking for a laptop, just get it. There is absolutely no point in waiting for a M2 version.

We use x86 software for work so for kicks I ran a model on my m1 macbook pro through parallels and x86 emulations
The model ran in 13' vs 20' for a windows PC with 11th gen intel chips that work gives us.

My 14 Macbook Pro probably the best laptop I ever owned and I've owned many laptops since 20 years ago. Reliable, great battery, good keyboard, nice screen, blazingly fast, silent. What else do you need? if only the 32GB price is not crazy, I would've take it but 16GB is still very nice. As software engineer, I vote 14 Macbook Pro but again I think everyone would be fine with just 13 Air / Pro M1/M2

Great review. I'm really glad you mentioned that you see a performance difference between the M1 Max and the pro when it comes to Premier. I bought the M1 Max 32 GB GPU version and Premiere Pro is one of the main things I will be using it for. I was afraid I spent way more money than necessary but it seems like I may be one of those cases that benefits most from the max chip. I also only upgrade my computer every 6 to 8 years so I find when I get the best money can buy it lasts longer and stays relevant longer.

I had the same tough decision, especially when the Pro went on sale on Best Buy for $400US less. I couldn't justify the extra expense of the Pro because I already have a powerful Mac desktop, but the real tipping point was when the base M2 Air went on sale on Amazon (for $150US less). I jumped on that.

@@bryans8656 makes sense. I am a grad student too and bought the pro from Best Buy for 1600. It’s been insane. The problem with the M2 air is that it has heating and slowing down issues and especially the base model. You have to pay 1500 at least for the 512 gb sad model which has less of those issues. However I am positive that if your work includes programming and running a little demanding codes, then the pro handles all that way better than the airs

Great review. I just recently went through deciding which Macbook to get, the M2 Air or M1 based MBP 14". In the end I went with the MBP 14. It came with more memory (16 GB) and drive space (512 GB) as standard. But the biggest difference was the screen. Much brighter and easier on the eyes. Also, today the MB 14 is considerable cheaper on Amazon than a M2 Air upgraded to the same 16GB/512GB.

i"ve switched to M2 max , and compared to M1 Max , there is definitely a huge gain especially in the GPU area, but yes around 20% for the CPU even thought the 16 inch with it's high performance mode can clock at 3.68 Ghz , but you get also HDMI 2.1 which is neat and Wifi 6E and BT 5.3 . so I would say nowadays you can do like me and try Apple Refurbished store, I'm a customer since 20 years, and never thought of this option which I knew existed, cos I assume the Mac would come with a used battery and some scratches .. but no , 1 cycle for battery and only 600 Gb written to the SSD thx to Dx Drive and I've saved 700 euros . same warranty + AppleCare available. and it's like buying a new one, so if you are not in a hurry , watch the refurb for a specific model and be quick when they appears. you might need t wait a few days but it's totally worth it.
