  • It’s hard finding the right MacBook and it’s even harder when each model is so similar, but what if you were someone who spent too much money on these things and used all of them before. Or at least most of them. That would describe me too well. Let’s talk about it.

I’m going to go over quite a few topics. I’ll try my best to make your life as easy as possible for you and timestamped all the topics below already. But we’ll talk about the MacBook airs, pros, their screen sizes, storage, ram, accessories, and my own personal picks of what I’d recommend based on budget and needs.
Okay. So this has everything I learned after owning quite a few macbooks, and most of the Apple silicon lineup. I hope you find this information useful in some way, and I’d love to know what you think. After this, what are you thinking about getting? Did this breakdown guide you to that decision in any way? Let me know in the comment section below!

M1 air refurbished through apple with 16GB memory and 512GB SSD is $1099 which I was considering but I ended up going with open box good condition base M1 Air Gold from Best Buy for $605. It's in perfect condition and I'm only using this for taxes, typing long emails, Figma in browser, making invitations for parties and light stuff I don't want to use my iPad on and it's been amazing. I use my company issued laptop 16" M2 Max with 64GB memory for engineering work and that thing is way too overpowered and heavy for what I do in my personal life. Great content!

I don’t wish to be the bearer of bad news, but… I have an M1 Air 5 iPad. It’s plagued with issues, especially after the most recent 17.4.1 update, in my case; Google: M1 iPad / MacBook not charging after 17.4.1. Presently, my device no longer charges without being restarted. I understand, this being Apple’s first foray into designing their own in-house chip, which also has an unpatchable design flaw, which will eventually be exploited, but it’s faulty and every subsequent patch appears to come with more issues. My advise, avoid the M1, if at all possible, no matter how tempting…

Thank you for this. Curious on your take on my hilarious (?) situation. Right now i'm using a 2013 MacBook Pro that I upgrade as much as i could at the time. I've used it HEAVILY - I am a sound designer and video editor, and i have also used Motion a few times (and will be using After Effects in the next couple of years). I'm more than due for an update, as you can imagine, I can't even update the operating system, and programs like Logic really struggle. So anything will be an improvement. Because of video editing, and my old eyes, right now i'm looking at getting the 16" M3 Max 16 Core - with 2TB. My question is - do you think the 128GB is worth it? The only reason the one i'm on now has survived is because of the money i put in it when I bought it - so the extra cost would be worth if that was the case. However it is a $1000K, and i'm an artist, no a rich person ha. Thoughts? I am leaning toward the 128GB.. but i also don't want to just be burning money. I give Apple enough of my money as it is.

    • @scottfonseca9053
      @scottfonseca9053 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

128gb is overkill for what you do, unless you’re going to dive deep into 3D models and 3D animation/design. I actually just upgraded from a 2013 MBP, and I also sound design and produced as well so I feel you. I went with the M3 Max 36gb. From everything I’ve seen, it’s not much of a necessity to go higher unless you really just want the extra two cpu cores. all tests i’ve seen show that the 36gb still plows through most over kill test sessions in ableton or logic with ease, maxing out at realistically unrealistic track amounts. It also breezes through video editing and rendering. it runs games at 160 fps well and works great for most animation work. all in all, it’s a beast of a machine.

I currently use the 2016 MacBook pro so it’s due for an upgrade especially because it doesn’t support software updates anymore. I do 3d design work but am also a student so, I need performance but also portability. Budget is not an issue because I am going to be using it for 8-10 years and I want something that will last performance wise. I checked on my iMac and I am using at least 32 g of RAM. I was thinking of waiting for the M4 max 14’ but those would probably have the same overheating issue as the current gen so I am not opposed to the 16’. What do you guys suggest I buy?

I'm quite confused between the 13" M2 air with 16gigs or the M3 Pro mbp. ~2200 for the pro and ~1500 for the air where I live. I am someone who works on AI and trains models. I have been getting by just fine with a 10th gen Intel i7 H series processor with 16gigs of ram, though it has started to get slow and be a bottleneck. I usually have a lot of tabs open and multiple editors, some that are connected to VMs. I am pushing my current machine to 100% ram and cpu very often. I would soon be joining a tech focused masters.
Although I can spend the 2200, it is no doubt going to be a huge dent on my pocket. Even the air is quite expensive, but I am fine with that much. I'd probably be using this machine for a good part of the next 4-5 years. Does it make sense to save on the cash and go with the Air, I am willing to manage the occasional hiccups. Or does the pro seem like that much better an investment being about 50% more expensive? TYIA.

I started watching the first videos of this channel with great joy and it was a very nice balance of Tech and comedy. Now it's mostly reviews of Apple products and many of them really unnecessary. I get the fact that videos of Apple products get more views but most of them are not interesting to me. I'm posting this comment more like a feedback to Jimmy and not as a typical negative comment.

    • @JimmyTriesWorld

Hey! I 100% appreciate the feedback from longer term viewers. It’s true that my content has shifted a certain way and I feel that way myself when I scroll through my list of videos. Video idea wise I try to focus on topics I find interesting as well as tried and true tested videos that perform well. Just a few videos ago I did a desk setup video in a completely different style that I loved doing even if it performed awful! But that also does include items I use in my day to day life. But humor on the channel has dropped and that’s probably due to a some stressful things going on in my own life the last couple of years but something I’ve been trying to add back in where I can. For example I started trying portable pc handhelds and they’ve been super interesting for me and hoping to push out content on that sort of thing and more experimental stuff this year. This comment definitely echoed a lot of sentiment I’ve been feeling myself and I appreciate someone also pointed it out!

@@JimmyTriesWorld I honestly wish things get better in your life, sorry I just thought you decided to change your style. I watched that video as well. It's your channel of course and as I said I wish things will get better for you and bring back some of that comedy you put in your videos.

Okay, could you help me out on this one?
I have a good custom PC with i7 12 Gen, RTX 3050 8 GB, and 32 GB RAM.
I’m a freelance photographer and videographer and use this setup to edit videos and photos. I’m looking for a laptop for shoots and work while travelling. I need a laptop as of now but I guess I can try to stretch my need for a laptop till the end of this year.
I’m saving money to get the M3 Pro MacBook Pro 14’’ with the 11 core CPU, 36 GB Ram and 1 TB SSD and I’m considering selling my PC for this laptop.
    Is it worth it?
Also, I am getting a brand new M2 Max MacBook Pro With a 12-Core CPU And 30-core GPU, 32GB Ram 1TB SSD for the same price as the M3 Pro MacBook Pro 14’' with the 11 core CPU, 18GB RAM and 512GB SSD.
    Now I have 5 option
    1. Sell my PC setup and completely switch to a good variant of MacBook
    2. Get the M3 MacBook Pro with 16/32 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD and keep my PC as well
    3. Buy a good Windows laptop and keep my PC
    4. Save more money for the M4 Pro.
    5. Or Get the M2 Max MacBook Pro With 12-core CPU And 30-core GPU, 32GB RAM 1TB SSD
    Note:-
    1. Old variants of new MacBooks are the same price as the newer ones in my country
    2. I don’t trust refurbished or second-hand laptops in my country
If anyone has any configuration suggestions please reply or any other advice
    Thank you

For pros 32gb is the bare minimum as it is shared with the cpu and GPU.
This will help avoid ssd wear and slower performance.
Think before you buy a 8gb 256 GB
Used mac as they can never ever upgraded.
And on.m1m2m3 when.that ssd goes it will not boot from external drives meaning your machine is now worthless.
This is why an upgradeable ssd is so so important to stop planned obselence and e waste.
Apple did this on purpose to make higher profits on at purchase ram and storage and to make sure these machines die once the ssd dies making users need an entire new machine.
This is unfortunate and extremely risky for pros and business.
Who need to Be able to destroy and or replace the ssd.
Or add memory when or if need changes.
Unfortunately others are doing this as well now.
Even Microsoft does allow ssd removal and upgrades as corporations will not buy unless they can do that.
They must be able to destroy the ssd or change it if needed.

I just ordered a refurbished MacBook Pro M3 with 18 ram and 512 storage versus 15 inch MacBook Air for the same price which I’m returning. 🎉. My M1 MacBook Pro suddenly died on me. The extended warranty had just run out and they wanted $700 ship it off to a facility to check it out. I have also had trouble with the M1 iPad Pro dying on me. I’ve had to replace it twice with the extended warranty. So I don’t know if anyone else has had trouble with M1 or I just got unlucky to have lemons. I really wanna just unscrew my M1 and see if I can put a new battery in myself or find someone that will do it for me. I really wanna know why that computer died.
The main reason that I am switching to the pro is because as I get older colors seem to dim and fade on me and it’s hard to see them clearly. So I’m hoping that the pro will be clear and sharper for me. What do you think about that? it’s a big decision and a lot of money to drop especially since I just bought that M1 two years ago.

I have an M1 Air 5 iPad. It’s plagued with issues, especially after the most recent 17.4.1 update; Google: iPad not charging after 17.4.1. Presently, it no longer charges without being restarted. I understand, this being Apple’s first foray into designing their own in-house chip, which also has an unpatchable design flaw, which will eventually be exploited. My advise, avoid the M1, if at all possible, no matter how tempting…

The M1 macbook air specifically is not just a "pretty competent machine". It's hands down the best laptop for the majority of the planet. If you need something more professional the pro model is better. If you need heavy duty AI / computer science stuff or HEAVY video editing Max is the one. Pretty simple. anything past M1 has been tweaked adjusted and made worse in many ways as apple tinkered with the line of products. M1 is stil their best machines
