    I just ordered my own disc detainer pick from Sparrows and was trying to find replacement tips in case one broke, and was surprised to see they didn’t sell any. This video is perfect and I’m definitely going to make a few to use while I practice picking with it.

      Thats exactly what got the ball rolling for me, I had my Sparrow tip for a day or so, all the handle did was slide down, and a piece chipped off, I was heartbroken, so I started looking into making them myself, after I figured someone else might have the same problem, so I thought this out there. Thanks for checking it out, and for leaving an awesome comment. Take care 👍

    Nice going on these :) I cut the tip to rough thickness with a hand saw and then filed the shape by hand so far, as it's quite easy and fast by hand too. I made mine from 2mm as that fits in the chinese picks. I just got the sparrows one last week, so now I should order some 1.5mm rods.

I will say after making my own, and crusching a few locks, feels good to know I made the tip profile to get it open. Also there's a few locks I have came across that need different shapes, and being able to whip them up, is awesome, the Anchor laugh, and kryptonite locks, come to mind as some strange keyways (at least the first disc on them) I had to made a separate one for each to crack them. Thanks for commenting, take care, and be safe man👍

  • @JohnSmith-gs4lw
    @JohnSmith-gs4lw 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    While I appreciate your attention to detail, as a knife maker I can pretty much guarantee you that you will not blow the temper on these with sandpaper or hand files. These are (allegedly) made from 65Mn which is a low alloy carbon steel. Since they chose a tool/cutlery steel, we can assume they are hardened and tempered. We can also be pretty sure they are not going to get harder because you are not heating them to critical temperature and quenching, and that carbon steel is not going to work harden with what you are doing. So they can only get softer by tempering, or annealing if we take it to an extreme. People become obsessed with blowing tempers, especially when grinding knife bevels or aggressively machining hardened steels. But the temperatures required to do that are far, far beyond what you could do with hand tools. No water dipping or extraordinary measures required. With your Dremel? Perhaps, but you’d need to know more about the current heat treat on the pins. One would also need to ask, “So what if you *do* blow the temper?” In a cutting tool, that’s a big deal. If you have no way to go through the heat treat process again (perhaps it a stainless steel with a complex heat treat recipe or there is a handle permanently attached) you can throw that tool in the trash. But here, where we are spinning disks against side-bars, do we care if those wings are 50 HRC or 60 HRC? If anything, I suspect we *want* them to be softer. We are applying torque to the shafts, and tangential forces to the tips that are absolutely not what the original pins were designed for. Are they going to shatter like glass? Or are they going to mash over like they were made from clay? I suggest neither. Which is why I believe it doesn’t matter one bit how you machine them down to size.

      @@JohnSmith-gs4lw If it was coming from a place of help then I understand and am sorry,, most of the time its someone trolling. That doesn't even watch the video, or has already something to say half way through before the video is over, or has ever even attempted to make disc pick. I was a bit lost because I was using water to cool the metal for the Dremel, so not to take any chances of over heating the shaft of the ejector pin, and having failure when picking, this was told to me is a must by many other lock pickers who are very well known in the locksport community, the water being use for the wet and dry sandpaper was just that, I like putting a shine on it and it seems to work better wet, also I use my hands and the sand paper can make enough friction to burn my finger tips.
      I also have used this method for all my disc detainer picks and they have performed great for ever lock I have used them on.

      @RookKnight I'd say it was constructive criticism... maybe with a bit of snark, but well intentioned none the less... mean't to help you and your viewers. I'm not educated in the subject matter, so I don't know if it's accurate, but it sounds well thought out.

      @@RookKnightI believe the separation/breakage or failure you're referring to from modifying other disc detainer pick shaft/tips has to do with the Chinese picks that have the tip crimped on... when those are ground down the crimp is severely weakened. I believe the fix was to reinforce the original Chinese crimped on shaft/tip that you're modifying with a solder used in the firearm industry/community.
      I really like you're video here by the way.
