When I saw the 10 penny nail go in the lathe, I thought “Oh, that's genius. Will it be strong enough though?” Then I noticed it wasn't a nail. Then you explained what you were *actually* using, which was even more genius.

Since you always accept criticism with an amazing attitude, I also want to give you a positive feedback. I started watching both your videos because one video was suggested to me randomly. I can confidently say I'm more aware about security in general and thanks to your experience and professionalism in explaining your work you inspired me to get a pick and training set and learn a new skill. thanks, a lot.

I definitely didn't understand exchanging the sounds of something being constructed with the sounds of something different less pleasant sounding being constructed.
And so this isn't just a negative comment, I'll wrap this up by saying that I love both of your videos. Both of you have helped me tremendously in my learning process.

    • @bosnianbill

@@undeadpiano Thank you for your compliment! The reason I added in the misc sounds was that the gimballed camera does not record sound, so I wanted to fill the silence with something. I thought it would be funny to use shop & machine sounds that were TOTALLY disconnected to the video - just for fun. People's reactions were a bit mixed, with both likers and haters, but the people that disliked it were quite....vocal.😋 Rather than continue pissing folks off I just used some music that I own the copyright to to fill the silence. Oddly, there are almost as many people that dislike my choice of music.... 😟

  • @JaakkoF

Nice to see other picking up on the idea of using mold ejector pins as the picking tip material :) Can't go too wrong with it as like you said, it is of one piece construction, hardened/tempered and some of them have been nitrided also. Available in HSS, silver steel and hotwork steel (most bendy ones), so lots to choose from and lengths/diameters are numerous.

In looking at what what you have got so far, my thoughts are that you might have made the side handles too long. This is likely to make it real easy to deform the nose.
The length of the pin also seens too long. In use consider that you be applying torque to the nose then rotating the disk. The long skinny pin is going to be a spring. As soon as you reach the gate, you will loose the restraint and the spring will accelerate the disk. If ths is too fast it will catch wedging the side bar. I think the shorter the pin the less it would flex giving you a better feedback.

Ejector pins are heat treated using a method called Nitriding, which gives a very hard thin skin whilst leaving the core strength of the softer internal material. The head of the ejector pin is soft to allow for machining of location features (flats or keys).

Awesome job LPL and BB! I hope the two of you get this disc detainer pick design manufactured for sale before some Chinese company rips off your design and mass markets a cheap version of it. Incidentally, I just stumbled upon a January 7th tweet from you, LPL, showing the disc detainer body and nose as your "first project" on your new lathe, which you completed about 3 weeks ago. These videos apparently took you some time to split apart and edit for posting here on your channel. Needless to say, I'm now also following you on Twitter. Again, beautiful and inspiring work!

A lot of injection mold supply houses grind custom pin sizes(including the head size). Try Precision punch in Berlin CT, Progressive components, Royal pins to name a few. They will be hesitant to grind the flats, but getting the head diameter and thickness will get you most of the way there. And as you may have guessed, the more you order the cheaper they will be. I made a disc detainer pick head out of a style B punch from Precision punch which are M2 steel and 70 rc. They take more torque than I would have guessed.

(1 adjustable size spring loaded follower for most sizes of core with detachable interchangeable tips for every combination of plug shape with storage compartment for shims and springs and pins and is designed to easily insert a shim between the follower and the lock body and has the groove cut in to the side for pinning shoes and 1 end of it made to be a 6 pin top loading bar to insert springs and drivers into the bible with the help of a pick or pinning knife).

The Sparrows tips seem to be brazed on, I also broke one of mine. I'm a bit disappointed with this aspect, as tip durability was one of the first things mentioned in the design process. You can get ejector pins cheaply on ebay, but unfortunately the dimensions need to be some strange inch fraction units.
