Thanks to you sir I repaired/serviced my old hand-me-down mower. It has never sounded more powerful. Symptoms were low revving and not maintaining rpm to almost cutting out. I removed, stripped and cleaned the fuel tank and carburettor and reassembled. Now it runs like an animal!
Fantastic. Thanks for letting me know. Happy cutting. Craig 👍👍
If only all DIY/instructional videos were so clear!
I really apreciate your nice feedback. Thanks. Craig
This in my opinion is far and away the best tutorial on B&S carburettor service on TH-cam.Gives you the confidence to attempt this job.well done Mr Kirkman
The best video on this type of Briggs & Stratton engine. Especially the detail about the flatness of the carburetor to fuel tank mating surface. This caused me to assemble and then reassemble the whole thing multiple times. Also, checking the intake tube to the engine is something that also needs to be checked. It's easy when you know how. Thanks for your attention to detail.
I just replaced the diaphram and bulb with the help your video. Your attention to detail made the exercise effortless. Thanks!
One of the most and best step by step videos I’ve seen
Just found your channel to-day. WOW Such a great resource of repair info and part numbers.
Thank You From Goderich Ontario Canada, home of the world's largest salt mine.
I been working on small engnes just about all my life. That said, if this fellow and you tube had been around years ago, I would have learned much more at a much faster rate. I thank him for that!

thank you so much for this! as a 40 year old woman who isn't scared of
a spanner, I have managed to bring our previously trusty old lawn mower back to life. shockingly we never knew to service it! it's was barely starting then surging. so a general clean, new spark plug, air filter, carb gasket and springs and finding a broken manifold pipe too! it's back up and running better than ever before! now to teach the DIY phobic husband to care for his toys!
thanks again for taking the time to share your knowledge
That's awesome. I'm really pleased you got that sorted and good look with the teaching 😂. Thanks again. Craig 👍

Excellent video. I was going to have my son help me, as he had gaskets and diaphrams. I watched your video and did her all myself. Old push mower now runs like new. Thank you for posting this!
THE VERY BEST VIDEO thank you for making this job a lot easier and well-presented it would have made me give up without the parts number you provided
Excellent video. Exactly the problem I was dealing with and video provided the solution I needed with excellent commentary. My 15 year old mower now runs like new. I highly recommend this video!
I had lots of running problems with my Briggs and Stratton engined mower, never finding the problem. Finally, with no more hair left, I changed the carburettor diaphragm and voilà, the issue was solved. Thanks for your help.

This was the best most informative of all I've watched. Thank you.
Thank you 👍👍👍👍👍
Very helpful video which allowed me to repair my mower and great added information
Thank you! I ended up with a tiller that was abandoned with the house we bought but its positively nasty and oily sludgy around the fuel tank. Hoping to find some parts local vs slow Amazon, but this looks like it has the information I need!
Hey thanks so much for this brilliant video. I managed to follow it clearly and now have my mower back in good working order.
Thank you so much 👍👍👍
Thanks very much @therepairspecialist. I've just sorted my lawnmower thanks to this video.
Hi good morning. I would like to compliment you on an excellent video. Best i have seen todate. So easy to follow its given me confidence to have a go at one of my mowers which is hunting when i start it and stops occasionally. When it settles down it does run ok. I have this issue every time i use it. I assume a good carb overhaul is required. Thanks again and well done.
Awesome, and thank you for your kind words. Craig
The best tutorial i have come across.
thank you so much
Jasna dobra predstavitev,žal ni tona za povedano!
Thank you and sorry about the No Sound Issue! Craig

Thank you for your awesome comment. I really appreciate it. Craig👍
Great video and with an East Midlands accent that I can understand as I grew up in Nottingham. Part numbers was a real bonus and my only question is "What is carburettor spray " ? Available easily ? Liked and subbed and can't wait to get started ! Duh !! Saw carb spray in your descriptions !!
Awesome, thank you. Craig
Well done, Sub'd and thumb's up. All the best from the U.S.
Very technivally illustrated instead of face shots talking...good camera shots
Thank you very much! 👍
Very good ,from Argentina,thanks.
Very in depth. Thanks for the great video!
What an excellent video. Thx so much - exactly what I needed
Great video, Craig.
On my engine the governor setup was was a little different different and took off the bracket off the front of the engine (used by the 3/8" bolt) to give more room to maneuver the carb off the shaft.
I didn't tighten the carb enough and it was leaking when priming. After more tightening I primed the carb, still leaked, more tightening did the job and then I installed the carb back on the engine.
Absolutely brilliant thank you,
Good video, diaphragm goes on first that's what I needed. Good stuff. Happy Motoring oops maybe mowing.
Excellent. Thank you
Great video Craig, like & subscribed.
Awesome. Thank you very much. Craig
Great video. Tnx.
Brilliant - exactly what I needed.
Awesome. Thank you for your feedback. Craig 👍

Thank you for your nice feedback. I really apreciate it. Craig
Excellent Video .....thank you so much!
Thank you for your nice feedback I really appreciate it. Craig 👍
Well Said , thanks
Great video
Thank you so much
Thanks. It still seems wrong to put the Diaphragm against the tank, but I did. The original was against the carb.
Many thanks was having trouble locating these parts.... I appear to have broken a small sponge like gasket / washer around the shaft of the carb throttle goes on the outside of the carb near where the cables attach to govern opening and closing or speed control - this would prevent ingress of dirt down the shaft but nowhere to be seen as a spare and looks tricky to replace help!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. My lawn Mower, bolens 450 series 148cc the primer bulb goes comply in after using lawn mower, lawn mower turns off. Can you please help me fix this problem? thank you.
Brilliant
1) I recommend hitting with air first, carb spray second, then with air again. The stronger the air the more debris you can easily blow off.
2) I had a problem where the gasket curled away from a screw hole, happened too easy & had to undo and fix.
15:55 Your dead bug is still in the fins 😝
Great video, exactly what I needed!
So when I order parts, all I need is the diaphragm, gasket and possibly the O-ring (unless anything else is missing/broken)?
First of all thank you for your kind feedback. And yes, usually you just need the diaphragm and gasket 👍
I replaced my diaphragm and gasket last October and found this video invaluable. Last week I noticed fuel was leaking onto the top of the tank so I've just had it to pieces. I did everything as per your video again but am still getting fuel coming up one of the screw shafts. At 14.59 it looks like your screws have a sealing washer on them ?? Not sure if mine do. If this can't be sorted is there some kind of gasket sealant that can be used. Hope you can help as I'm a bit stuck.
Hi. Thank you for your kind feedback, I really appreciate it. The screws aren’t actually in need of a sealing washer. The screws in my vid are just spring washers. If you are getting fuel out of the screw hole then just make sure that the diaphragm is not damaged in that area, the screw is nice and tight, and if that isn’t fixing the issue then consider that the top of the tank can sometimes distort ( the silver machined part where the carb sits on top). If this is the case then you can either buy a new tank ( or a good used one from eBay for much less the price). You can test to see if there is warping on this area by using a straight edge ruler as shown in the vid. This issue with warped tanks is not so common though so make sure you check the other things first. Because the carb is made of plastic they can sometimes have airline splits in them that can cause this type of issue. As mentioned about the gasket, and diaphragm for that matter, give these a thorough check for tiny cracks and splits. Start here and if this doesn’t sort the problem we can go further. Thanks again. Craig 👍👍👍
@@TheRepairSpecialist Thank you Craig. So kind of you to reply & so quickly too ! I thought I'd lost all 5 washers when I first took it to bits last year. Maybe not it seems. The gasket & diaphragm were new last year and new ones again today. I'll have to do the straight edge test at the next opportunity. Pity, as I thought I was doing so well & am now worried that I've used more force than I should have & cracked the plastic.
What size is that little black O ring that goes the white plastic o ring ??
Can it work if mounted without the little spring?
How important is the rubber grommet condition? Mine has cracks in it.
i got almoust the same. Mine is just a little older, no priming button. Question. Is it the same diafram?
Hi, I have removed the primer bulb ,just like in your video, but a small ball bearing,a small spring and a plastic spacer fell out, where do they go???
Down side of not taking the filter off is that you can’t see the state of the jet. 😊
Very true
Do you know how I can fix a mower>? that I turned it the wrong way, to drain the oil and now it won't start is 4 stroke
I've put three new carbs and tanks on mine and on all of them about the 3rd time I use it the carb. doesn't want to prime. I get frustrated because I don't know specifically what to fix so I just buy a new assembly. What is going on with these that I have to fight this battle every year after only a couple of uses? Does the diaphragm go bad that quickly? Is there something I need to make sure is clean after every use?
Hi
It sounds like you're having some frustrating issues with your Briggs and Stratton 500 series engine. If your carburetor and fuel tank assembly keep failing after just a few uses, there are a few common culprits to consider:
1. **Fuel Quality**: Ethanol in gasoline can attract moisture and cause corrosion. Try using ethanol-free fuel or add a fuel stabilizer to prevent this.
2. **Fuel Contamination**: Dirt, debris, or water in the fuel can clog the carburetor. Ensure you're using clean fuel and consider adding a fuel filter.
3. **Storage Practices**: Storing the mower with fuel in it can lead to degradation and deposits. At the end of the season, either drain the fuel system or run the engine until it stops.
4. **Carburetor Issues**: Small passages in the carburetor can get clogged easily. Regular cleaning and using high-quality fuel can help.
5. **Primer Bulb Problems**: Check the primer bulb for any cracks or wear and ensure it’s functioning correctly.
6. **Fuel Tank Ventilation**: A clogged fuel cap vent can create a vacuum and prevent fuel flow. Clean or replace the cap if needed.
By addressing these areas, you can hopefully reduce the need for frequent replacements. Good luck, and happy mowing!

id like to know what is the difference in between the 5hp 190cc an the 6hp 190cc 4stroke Briggs an Stratton engines how do they work out the difference is bore an stroke the same
Where can I find links for the various parts ?
I would look on Amazon first of all. EBay is another good place to look.
Is it normal for gasket to protrude a little at one end? as in this Video, I have the same on a new gasket , the Diaphram does not stick out
Can I use water or throttle body cleaner for cleaning the carburetor? Is it safe to use? Thank you!
I usually use either of those. As long as you make sure that you dry out the inside of the tank afterwoods then all should be just fine
I’ve done a few of these & can’t get them to work 🙈
where can anyone buy these parts
Amazon, eBay etc
eBay or Amazon
They both have them cheap price and they work fine
Smal parts of dirty can make trouble..
I’m bored and just watching how others fix them for tips and tricks
Ok
It's not the space shuttle. But,a way informative video .Also,if your mower don't prime ? Scratch a shallow line on the tank where the gasget meets the tank. All the way around surface of the tank. It will help with a gap,and help with the seal. I saw this on TH-cam,it works.
If you held a gun to my head and demanded constructive criticism about this video, my mind would be dangerously blank. The last moment before the trigger pulls, “OK! I have one, don’t kill me! The model numbers in the lower left corner are impossible to see when the video is paused to write it all down in portrait or landscape on my phone requiring reversing a bunch of times!!!” (hesitatingly yelled in one exasperated breath).
Ahh. Ok. Thank you for letting me know that. I do appreciate it. I will have a think about what to do for the best there. Thanks for your feedback. Craig
