check spark, compression, make sure there is fuel to the engine, I usually spray quick start immediately after a rebuild to get it going quicker

I was just given this lawnmower as a hand-me-down and it looked to be in great condition. I went to fire it up to warm the oil to change it, and had the same problem in needing to prime the mower to keep it going. Luckily I watched this video last night for kicks and knew exactly what to do. It now works like a charm. Thanks for saving me money and allowing me to add another notch to my DIY belt!

I just cleaned my carburetor assuming that I had a dirty needle and seat. However put it all back together still would not run. So found your video and realized that I never checked the passages in the bowl nut. When I checked I discovered the passages were completely blocked. Cleaned them out with carb cleaner and some small gauge wire. Mower now runs like new.
    Many thanks.

Much Appreciated. Your instructions worked perfectly on my 2 year old snowblower which would not start. Turns out the carb was was gunked up with green sticky deposits , which I'm guessing might be copper carbonate caused by crappy ethanol in my fuel. I've subscribed to your channel which are the best quality videos I was able to find. You saved my 120 dollars by not needing to take to my small motor repair shop.

Looks very clean, so it's strange the carb would be dirty, BUT, I did follow a video and found mine had a clogged jet, used a paper clip to unclog it and now it starts and runs fine. Thank you, TH-cam.

I am So pleased to have found this video.
I have a "Greenfield" ride on mower with a 6HP Briggs and Stratton engine that will run for about 15 minutes then stalls.
If I loosen the fuel line After the in-line filter, the fuel miraculously appears in the inline filter again, the engine starts and runs till the next time it "runs out of fuel!.
I now feel confident about taking the carburettor off.
Thank You for sharing your knowledge, and the very clear and concise videos'.

Thanks for the great videos. Our hand me down mower always had a really rough idle, then wouldn't run unless you pressed the prime button, as you showed here. I cleaned some gelatinous substance from the bottom of the fuel bowl (otherwise the carburetor looked clean), and once I remember to prime it, it started and ran as smooth as in the video; smoother than it ever had for us.

Another great video from Don. I must confess that at first I did not understand what Don meant when he said that the bowl bolt is also a jet and why he went to so much trouble to clean it. I cleaned my carb body to within in an inch of it's life and could not get the engine to run for more that a second or two. After paying real close attention to the bolt one last time it fired right up. Basically the bolt is hollow and gas gets sucked up through it. If the orifices in the bolt are clogged the engine will not run. After going through this I now understand why Don was so meticulous with the bolt! It does more than just hold the bowl on!! Thanks Again Don! You have a great channel!!

    This really helped me!
    2 points:
1.next time I'd never remove the needle valve seat! just block the channel to keep the carb cleaner away from the tiny rubber seat. I damaged it on removal.
    2. If you do and are replacing with a new one, know that the tube is TAPERED down to the needle valve seat location, at first the replacement appeared too small, but when tamped into place it fit fine.

Thank you sooooo much for this video! One of three total videos I found that solved my problem! I needed to mow my lawn...the repair people had a two week wait just to diagnose and they said it could be more than $200 to fix it based on what I had described (I didn't pay that much for the mower, new!) Thought I was going to have to trash the whole thing. I ordered a carburetor overhaul kit online (under $7)... which hasn't even arrived yet...and a can of carburetor cleaner, and just went in and cleaned everything out...et voila! I'm overjoyed! Got the whole yard mowed and no more gas leaking out! AND!!!! I now know I won't have to keep buying and trashing lawn mowers on a regular basis! :)))))

Excellent video, great camera work. So much more informative and "watchable" than these weekend warrior videographers who hold the camera in one hand and work with the other! Very clear vocals and diction...I was thinking Canadian, then I saw the predominant French on the can of started fluid...that clinched it! The engine on my pressure washer had exactly this problem and I was a little leary about messing with it myself. After this video, I feel completely comfortable pulling the carb off and cleaning it. Thanks. I've subscribed!

A belated thank you for this video: was watching it as a refresher and realized this is where you mentioned using a tip cleaner for the little holes. I'm not a welder so it took me a while to find what you meant (a little $3 thing in the welding department) but now that I have one it's great. As a suggestion, I used a pair of side cutters to snip off the smooth end portion of a few of the files so they can clean shallow holes better.

Apologies for the lengthy question... Got Troybilt with 675 B/S, no primer bulb, from a Lady whose young son way, way overfilled the oil. Somewhere along the line he hit something to bend the blade and shear the key on the blade adapter as well. After draining the oil, I first pulled the starter, and a bit of oil spewed from the spark plug hole. After a good Carb clean, oil change, blade and adapter replacement, I took off the muffler and about 2oz of oil poured out. Put it back together, started on first pull, smoked like crazy for about 7 min, then I mowed my back yard with her machine for about 20 min.
Went to deliver it to her the next day, and realized I forgot the bend the tabs on the muffler washer and lost one of her muffler bolts somewhere in my yard. Made a mad dash to the hardware store for a new bolt and spacers. I over tightened the bolt a bit due to the spacer inside being slightly shorter than the other bolt, slightly denting the muffler. Got it unloaded at her house, pulled the starter and it lugged and chugged, finally dying.
I took it back and figured to look at the last thing I did to the machine. I checked the muffler mounting bolts, all gaskets are in place and the choke arm is free. I reckoned it might be a partially sheared flywheel key that I finished off mowing my lawn. Replaced that, (it was not sheared, but starting to) Same problem, it starts, chugs and lugs along until I manually open the choke butterfly, and will sputter, eventually rev up, hunt around for speed for 15 seconds, and finally warms up and smooths out. I have adjusted the throttle arm to up the rpm from 2600 to 3250. I cleaned the carb again, this time replacing the valve seat, and new intake gasket and manifold o-ring, double checking with a fine wire that all passages are clear in the carb. The choke linkage and governor linkage operates freely with no snags or tension.
I have now drained the oil and gas again, and have it nose down to assist draining any more oil that may in the top end, however none is really coming out the spark plug hole. I can't send it back to her with instructions to stick her fingers behind the airbox to jiggle the linkage around till it starts running right. I'm at a loss. Any ideas?

To save a few minutes in the procedure, some viewers may plan to remove only the threaded nut beneath the carburetor bowl and the bowl, itself. However, on a dirty, dustry engine, dirt and debris are likely to fall into the bowl on removal.
And after cleaning the bowl,, reinstallation of the bowl requires the bowl be aligned precisely to avoid dislodging more debris-- almost any speck of dirt can cause a problem, and may compromise the work completed.
The best approach is hose off all the debris (from a completely cool engine) well before the carburetor operation, and to let the machine dry, first. Since cleaning the carburetor is done only occasionally, it may be worthwhile to use a car wash pressure spray wand for a more thorough cleaning of hard-to-reach areas.
BTW, this is an excellent video-- well organized, with superbly lighted and focused close-up shots, and a clearly spoken narration. Wish all the videos had at least the production values of this one.

Great Video but before working on any power equipment I always remove the spark plug boot just to be sure there are no accidents. Too many times I have seen people with injuries from there lawn and garden equipment.

Thanks Dony. Why don't the manufacturers install a fuel shut off valve on these machines? Would it help to install an after market one?

I have Briggs & Stratton Quantum 6.25HP model# 228511x8e. When I started this season (after I changed the oil and gas), it started fine but it was running weak, it wasn't as strong as before. I thought the carburetor was dirty so I followed the instructions in your video to clean the carb. Then put everything together correctly like you said, but now my lawn mower won't even start. What could be wrong with it?
