I met Def Leopard in Knoxville after the concert. I’m getting off the elevator and Rick Allen is standing there with a beer in his hand. I yelled Rick Allen and put my hand out to shake, Rick looks at his beer and says “I can’t shake your hand mate.” I was so embarrassed because he only had 1 arm. He was very cool about it though.

Def Leppard is a great group. Yes; the drummer, Rick Allen, was involved in a serious car accident and lost an arm after their first breakout hits. Rather than replace him, the whole band agreed to wait for him to be rehabilitated and relearn drums with one arm. Says a lot about their characters. Of course this did impact their careers to a degree, but sure didn't dim their shine. ❤️😇🙏
That's what I love about these reactions and reading the comments section, I'll see a comment like this and get a whole new found respect for the band or singer.

I remember hearing the band members say in an interview that it wasn’t for them to say he couldn’t do it, it was for him to say. I learned a whole new respect for the entire band then.💗

Rick Allen is not just an awesome drummer, he is also an extremely talented painter. Some of his artwork is absolutely amazing. Plus he is a genuine, down to earth guy to boot.

They made a custom drum kit for Rick Allen after his car accident in 84 so he could play the left arm parts with his left leg instead. Pretty amazing he still plays as well as he did before having to relearn how to play everything with his disability. Also RIP to Steve Clark.

He actually came up with the idea of using both feet while in the hospital..he was tapping his feet on his hospital bed. The band never even considered replacing him. Rock of Ages, Women, Photograph, Hysteria, Animal...these guys bring it! They also helped start the fad in the 80's of ripped jeans, and the british flag shirt. I enjoyed the 80's...

Yup he has one arm. The way he’s playing the drums on the left side is he had a special pedal made for him to play with his foot. It’s incredible if you see the story about it. I was amazed when I saw it years ago. Dude is a genius didn’t let losing his arm stop him from doing what he loves.

Yeah, and if I recall correctly, he originally wanted to quit the band thinking that he would hold back their success, and the other band members were having none of it and motivated him to stick with it. Legend indeed...that would be rough to come back from for a drummer, more mentally than physically.

Before hip hop became the majority of the music in the dj's set list at most strip clubs, this song was THE 80s and early 90s strip club anthem.
True, this and Motley Crue’s Girls, Girls, Girls which to this day is still played in every strip club on the planet. These clubs are where my two stupid brothers picked up their trashy wives. I’ve already knocked one of them out. 😀

Steve Clark had been on antidepressants but also had a drinking problem, and antidepressants and alcohol don't mix. Died in his sleep, two days before my birthday. Cried when I heard. I had no idea how long he'd struggled with alcoholism.
My kids were singing this one day, "Awesome sugar omelettes" Now that's all I hear.

I've been jamming to those dudes my entire life. I'm friends with the drummer's Mother. I heard the story of Rick's first drum kit from his Father. I heard the complete story of his arm directly from Rick himself during a dinner. So I love watching these videos of folks hearing the Leps for the first time. And I especially love watching all of you realize Rick is doing all that with one arm. Your reactions are always so awesome to watch.

Rick Allen, the drummer for Def Leppard lost his arm on December 31, 1984.
While trying to pass a car at high speed he lost control of his corvette, which hit a dry stone wall severing his arm. This never deterred him from his dream of being a drummer in one of the worlds most selling rock n’ roll bands of all time, selling over 100 million albums. They were inducted into the Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Fame in 2019.

I remember being an impatient teenager waiting for their next album to come out and totally missing that this happened... the band actually WAITED for him to learn how to play again with one arm before they made more music.... EPIC
A similar thing happened to my husband after going to a Van Halen concert. He had stayed overnight in a hotel & the next morning while walking down the hall he found himself face to face with Eddie Van Halen (an idol of my husband's, who also plays guitar). My husband held out his hand & Eddie transferred his cigarette from his right hand to his left hand & they shook hands. My husband told him it was a great show & Eddie thanked him for coming. My husband's only regret is that he was so frazzled by the encounter that he walked past the elevators (which he had meant to get on) & Eddie got on the elevator alone. He's always wondered what small talk may have occurred in that elevator if he had gotten on it with Eddie, but he's still very thankful that he at least got to meet him in person & shake his hand.
What’s amazing about the drummer is he had two arms when they started Def Leppard. He got into a car wreck but adapted. He used more footwork and additional drums in his set. That’s love that his band didn’t give up on him. He actually is better sounding once he adapted to one arm in my opinion.

I simply love your reactions! I saw them live in South Africa in 1995 and due to serious relationship issues could not listen to them at all. I would cry my eyes out. It is only now that I am rediscovering my old music and I still love it. Stay strong, you'll get through times. If you have, take it one hour at a time if a day seems too hard. I was 17 years old and Castle Farms, Michigan was hosting the Hysteria tour...GREATEST TIME OF MY LIFE! Check out "God's of War", "Pyromania", "Animal" the entire Hysteria album. I cried when the drummer lost his arm in a car wreck. I remember crying when the guitarist Steve died. This band sums up my entire youth!! Mr.VIDEO YoU have discovered the GREATEST band to ever exist!! In my humble opinion!

I had a 1989 Ford Festiva with 15 inch woofers in the back. 6 inch woofers in my doors and then speaker box with all my midrange and tweeters. My mirrors would literally vibrate when this song came on. 60 years old now and still crank this song.
Here’s my open letter to Rick I’ve shared on their video. I’ve shared it on a few other reaction videos too. It’s just me thanking Rick for the influence and inspiration he’s given me in my life as a drummer…
Rick, I don’t know if you will see this; but when I was first learning how to play the drums in 1991, I was told by an arrogant musician that I shouldn’t use a “one armed hack” as inspiration. You have done more for the music community as a whole to promote healing through music than most musicians have in my opinion. The amount of people who saw what you did after the accident and decided, “If he can still play in one of the biggest rock bands in history, then so can we.”
I’m included in this. Two years after I began playing, I was in a near fatal car accident. I broke my back and had my insides tore up. After three surgeries, three weeks in two hospitals, and a few months recovering, I was up and walking again. The part where you have truly influenced me is after about 12 years of having a pain free life, my body slowly started to break down. I’ve had 21 surgeries since 1993. My low back is shot, I just had neck surgery to replace a torn disc, I have bulging discs in my neck still, my hips kill me to sit, I’ve had five ankle surgeries to repair torn tendons, bi-lateral carpal tunnel surgeries that jacked up my hands with nerve damage, and I get migraines from the head trauma from the accident all those years ago.
But I’m still playing the drums. I may not be playing in bands anymore, but I still play twice a month at my church, and I have some friends who jam with me. I’ve also helped a number of drummers by donating kits and gear as I can. All because I didn’t listen to someone who arrogantly said Rick Allen isn’t a real drummer.
Thank you Rick for inspiration.

I watch every reaction to this song for the realization moment. Rick Allen is just amazing to be able to do stuff most drummers can barely do with four limbs. I am a live sound engineer, and in my early days of doing sound (when this song was all the rage)... I used to do service calls on sound systems at strip clubs. I never left those places without hearing it several times.
This song wasnt even making that big of a dent in the charts until it started taking off in the strip clubs. It had been out for a while, and had a slow build out of strip clubs, before it became a huge hit. I heard it started in Florida, and worked its way west.

I seen this tour! First tour Def Leppard did after their drummer lost his arm. I am so glad that I did see this tour because their guitarist Steve Clark passed away just a few years after this tour. He was my favorite member of the band. R.I.P. Steve Clark.

They were the young whipper snappers during the metal days. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Scorpions, AC/DC, Dio etc. were the hot bands. Then the drummer got into that auto accident.

The truth is; this song hadn't even been completed when he played his first live show back, as it was one of the last to be completed for Hysteria. Def Leppard played their first live show after Rick Allen's 1984 car accident in Cork, Ireland on August 5th 1986. The show took place at the small 1,000 capacity Connolly Hall in Cork on the banks of the River Lee. Only 200 fans attended the low key show which was the start of Rick's amazing live comeback just 18 months after he'd left hospital. The show in Ireland was Rick Allen's first show back after the 31st December 1984 car accident that took his left arm. He played the first three songs - Stagefright, Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop) and Run Riot on his own. Then status Quo drummer Jeff Rich joined him on his own acoustic kit for the rest of the show as back up.The band had begun working with Mutt Lange again on the Hysteria album in early summer 1985 and by August 1986 they were ready to play a small warm up tour and a run of festival dates. Rick's "big" comeback would happen after this small warm-up tour with the first of four Monsters Of Rock festival shows at Donington Park race track in Derby, England on 16th August with Rock Rock(till you drop).
Met them as a teenager, never met such a nice band. We were groupies but they didnt mind, took pictures and help us find the rest of the band. Still have the pictures especially with the drummer
