The drummer, Rick Allen, lost his arm in a car accident in 1984, six years after the band was formed. The band went on hiatus from doing live performances until 1986. Thats when they did their first performance since Rick lost his arm. He adopted a specifically designed electronic drum kit and relearned how to play.
I think it is so respectful that the band members refused to replace him and waited until he felt confident enough to play live again.

I told that story to my kids and it sounds like fiction. This extremely popular rock band stopped performing live, while Rick healed and learned to play with one effing arm.

I was a huge Def Leppard fan when we learned about Rick's accident. I was shocked and in tears and just devestated for him and the band. I don't know if I have ever felt pride like I feel for Def Leppard whenever I listen to their music or watch them perform with the best damn one-armed drummer in the history of the universe. 😁

I feel so fortunate being a teenager in the 80’s. Def Leppard was one of my favorite bands. Besides their music it was the bond between the band members. Not many bands would have put their success on hold while the drummer healed and learned how to play drums with 1 arm and his feet. They supported him 100%. So much respect for them all. 🤘🏼😎

I saw this concert 2 weeks after this video was shot. Tesla opened during this tour. Tesla's hometown is Sacramento, CA. When Def Leppard rolled into town with Tesla the concert was immediately sold out. ARCO arena had a 6 second echo with plywood floors. So instead of clapping the audience would stomp their feet and the echo effect would compound and make it really really LOUD. This stage was in the round and there was an entrance fee to get under the stage. That particular price was too high for me but I heard the stories. This was the BEST concert I have ever been too for many reasons. The stars aligned, the people I was with, my favorite bands were playing, I was feeling great. This is just such a special memory.

I'm sure this has been said many times but it can't be emphasized enough.
Any band or group of people that just made and sold one of the biggest rock albums ever in history and took a several year hiatus just to let their drummer band member heal and regroup so he could rejoin the band.
Those are people with serious integrity and deserve much admiration.
They did not even know if the man would ever be able to or even want to drum again.
But they risked their whole Superstar status just when they got to the top and put their band on hold.
It simply amazes me because almost any other band would have got a replacement drummer almost immediately. Even if it was just temporarily they would have replaced the drummer and toured and rode that wave of success.

I was a freshman (girl) the year of the accident. Already a huge DL fan. The next day in school everyone was really quiet and discussing it. For the next few weeks people would greet each other with "Any news about Rick Allen?" When the re-attachment failed, we were all so sad, girls cried, we worried he wouldn't make it. We were not, however, surprised that he stayed with the band and worked through it. A very good example for my generation at the time.

This is one of my favorite Def Leppard songs, but it’s also one of my favorite videos because of how it’s directed. Every strong beat has an action, like someone jumping from a height, or a hand clapping in the audience. Throughout the entire video! And it makes it so exciting to watch. Check out their UK Concept video for this song and you’ll see more of Rick “Thunder God” Allen drumming with his one arm. This from their “in the round” during their Hysteria tour. Def Leppard is such an amazing group of brothers. They look out for each other. After their drummer lost his arm they waited to see what he wanted to do. A friend left a radio in his room and he found himself tapping along to the song with his feet so he worked with an electronic drum kit group to make all the sounds he would do with his left arm be set on pedals for his feet. Their first live concert they hired a backup in case it was too much for Rick. The backup was late so they went on and when he got there he told them that they didn’t need him that Rick was amazing. Rick didn’t realize until he started dating his current wife that he had PTSD from the accident. She helped him get help and now along with music he paints artwork and has a charity called Raven Drum Foundation which serves, educates, and empowers trauma survivors and communities in crisis, with a focus on Veterans and First Responders. His wife is also a musician who he plays drums for. Check out Lauren Monroe’s music. 3:23 a lot of artists tried to or were forced to try to mimic this song cause of its popularity. 5:23 listen to their song “Let’s Get Rocked” for innuendos. Some of the guys have side gigs going on. Lead singer Joe Elliott has another group called Down ‘n’ Outz and Vivian Campbell (who used to play in the band Dio) has a band called Last in Line that consists of former Dio band members who plays Dio songs and has some of their own. They chose their name from a 1984 Dio album. If you see a cover band playing in your area called Pyromania definitely check them out. They’re the only Def Leppard cover band approved by Def Leppard. Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campbell and Pyromania’s lead singer play together in the band Last in Line.

One of my favorite bands ever. And not just for their music, which is kickass, but because of their loyalty to their drummer as he recovered from a car wreck in which he lost his arm. They waited for him to heal and hired an engineer to design a drumset with extra pedals to compensate for his missing arm. And then they went nuclear!! Amazing story!

I’ve always loved that story about Rick Allen and how the band displayed such a sense of true loyalty. They could have easily told him that they couldn’t wait, that he was being replaced. Instead they rallied around him to support him, and they believed in him so much they waited for him to set up a new drum kit and relearn how to play with one arm.
I think we all like to watch reactors when they play Def Leppard, especially this song, just to see if they look closely enough to see him drumming with one arm.

When Def Leppard's drummer Rick Allen lost his arm in 1984 car accident he learned how to play the drums with one hand and using his feet hooked up to a bunch of extra foot pedals to simulate what his other arm would have done if you still had it, it's amazing and so is he.
It took him a long time to learn how to play the drums all over again in the new way.
    Try these tunes
    - Hello America
    - Bringin' on the Heartbreak (version 1)
    - High 'n' Dry (Saturday Night)
    - "Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop)
    - Foolin
    - Rock of Ages (which inspired the Broadway play to use the same name and the movie starring Tom Cruise) PS when Def Leppard saw the movie starring Tom Cruise they throught Tom Cruise did a better job at singing their songs than they did.

Somewhere around "86" when I lived in Redmon, IL Def Leppard came to Champaign, IL and performed at the University of Illinois Assembly Hall (now the State Farm Center). I collected up the money for the tickets from 22 people (kids & adults) and went to the box office (about 60 miles away) and purchased the tickets. I got 11 seats in the 11th row on one side of the stage and 11 seats in the 10th row on the opposite side of the stage (they performed in the round) at the pinnacle of "Pour Some Sugar On Me". Needless to say, everyone was thrilled I secured floor seat for the event. I'm 68.5 years old now and it was a blast and that was back when ticket prices were reasonable (about $35.00 a piece).

In reference to drummer Rick Allen's having one arm.
After they'd wrapped up touring from their 3rd album, Pyromania, Rick, and his girlfriend at the time were driving through the English countryside when this jerk driving an Alfa-Romeo came screaming past Rick and started slowing down to the point that Rick had to slow down and whenever Rick tried to pass him, the other driver would speed up trying to keep Rick from passing him and this kept on until Rick had lost control of his car and flipped it, which he was thrown from the car, and his left arm was hung up in the shoulder strap of the seat belt which pulled his arm off. The doctors had reattached his arm, but Rick developed an infection that was so bad they were forced to permanently amputate the arm to get the infection to clear up

The episode them sharing perfoemances including Def Leppard's 'Photograph', 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' and 'When Love and Hate Collide', as well as Taylor's 'Love Story', 'Teardrops on My Guitar' and 'Our Song'.

I don't remember the date. But I saw them here in Billings, Montana. The stage was in the round and Tesla was the opening act. We were right up front and I caught a guitar pick from Tesla's lead guitarist. Rick's drum solo was awesome with the turning drum kit and the green laser pyramid.

@@saplingthrasher23 When you say the stage was in the round do you mean it was in the middle of the floor? That was one unusual thing I remember about that concert vs many of the others I saw at that arena. I remember there was a huge curtain around the stage the main lights went off and the stage lights turned on as the curtain dropped and the band rose up from the middle of the stage on a platform.

Mutt heard Joe tinkering with a guitar and was like. “ stop! What is that? We have to record that!” They had spent 3 mil recording hysteria And the label was not happy they wanted it released. Was fun to see your expression when you finally caught the drummer playing with one arm. I was waiting for it because I have seen this video many times and they show the drummer multiple times throughout. This was definitely one of those top fun feel good dance songs of the 80s. No matter where you are or what you are doing, this song can pick you up and make you feel good.
For adults, it is clearly sexual innuendo. Not sure about other regions, but in the southeastern U.S., "sugar" can simply mean kisses. Like you can tell your kiddos to give you some sugar before sending them on their way or tucking them in for the night, etc. That makes it radio friendly and playlist friendly as well.😘

Such a BANGER! This got the party kicked into another gear back then. The entire HYSTERIA album is killer from start to finish with so many hits. Every song on the album is great! Saw them live in the round, which is shown in the video and the band runs all around the circle while the drum turns. It was one of the best stages for live performances I have seen. Their interaction with the audience was so much better than a stage at the end of the arena.
Def Leppard were hugely influenced by T-Rex, Bowie, Sweet, Thin Lizzy & Slade, amongst others. Their sound, while rock driven was formed from such a diverse style of musical influences. The guys in the band used to brag about the sex that went on under the stage when there was a break. Each band member would go under the stage, others would be on stage and girls would be under the stage waiting to have some fun. The debauchery of the 80's. LOVE IT!
Rick Allen's story is incredible. Started in the band at the age of 15. Rick had two arms and lost his arm on New Years eve of 1984 in a car accident where he rolled it into a sheep pasture, fortunately saved by some neighbors. As others have said, he never thought he would play again. The rest of the band stood behind him, waiting for him to heal. This was a make or break moment for them. Their Previous album, PYROMANIA was a successful album but not enough so and their label was going to drop them if their next album didn't do well. For the band to hold tight to Rick while he learned how to play a new set of drums under that threat speaks volumes. He had a special drum kit designed for him with foot pedals making up for his lost arm. HYSTERIA was produced by Robert "Mutt" Lange, who also did their Pyromania album, AC/DC - Back In Black album and many other rock albums. He was regarded as one of the best producers for rock albums at the time. He focused these young men and got Hysteria done in 1987. The first single released was "Women". Great song but did not crush it on the charts. Then they released "Animal". Another great song but it wasn't moving the needle enough for the record label and it was questionable if they would be dropped. Then they released "Pour Some Sugar" and the video to MTV. It blew up and these guys flew into the Stratosphere. It blew new life into the two previous songs and each single released after was also a hit. None as big, but certainly made the record label very happy and is considered one of the best albums in rock history. Rick Allen's efforts to learn how to play without an arm, the bands loyalty to him and the entire story is one of fables. But the band had another unfortunate incident happen when their bandmate, Steve Clark died of alcohol & drugs in 1991. All of the success, the partying, the women and the lifestyle that these guys had was too much for Steve. RIP Steve Clark.
