Def Leppard, one of the greatest rock bands of all time, & the beat behind it Mr. Rick Allen, a legend drummer who will go on with the rest of the greats, I will for sure give him recognition in anyway I can for the rest of my life.
I was 14 when his accident happened. As a huge Def Leppard fan, I was devastated thinking the band was over. In 1989, my future wife and I witnessed a miracle on stage as he performed again during the Hysteria tour. He has been an inspiration for me to never give up. I am currently going through a very traumatic time in my life. This video came up and has reminded me not to give up. This too shall pass, and I will have victory in my life again. Thank you for posting.
I remember when that accident happened in the 80’s. When he returned to the band people were such A-holes about it. They called him a freak show, they mocked him for using pedals to assist him which his drumming. He even committed on it in some interviews. He took it all in stride and soldered on. It’s nice to see him get some recognition for it!
I remember when they said that DL was using pre-recorded drum tracks and Rick was just pretending to play.... Years later? those people can all eat Sh*t!!! He's really playing and electronics have become a big part of many bands!!
@@zolitariglussey6302 I know! Watch his feet and hands. He's doing it all live. Seriously. It like for me a drum lick would be hands, but his are combinations of hands and feet across different foot pedals. Ba dum doom would be left hand snare, right hand snare, right hand tom.. for him it wold be right hand snare, left foot pedal with snare, right foot pedal with tom.. he's so fascinating to watch. Plus for the Slang album they got him to add in acoustic drums for that sound, so he sampled his acoustic sounds for his pedals and played real drums with pedal samples of those same drums. Such a great dude.
Pyromania tour..I was front row center..even purchased the British flag shorts that Rick made famous. I knew those guys were going to be around for a long time. His paintings are amazing.
How could 36 people dislike this? Heart says it all in his recovery. I'm so glad he's still playing today. The beat goes on. Keep on ROCKING . God Bless you Rick Allen!!!
I was affortunated to cross Rick some years ago in Buenos Aires /Argentina, moments before starting a Def Leppard concert. It´s amazing how gentle, humble & happy this man is. A real example.
The fact that Hysteria had some of the best drums of any of Def Leppard's albums speaks volumes of how Rick Allen overcame his injury. The drums in Pour Some Sugar on Me and Love Bites are 10/10.
Thanks for making this point. Its one that humbles me as a Def Leppard fan from Pyromania. They were great back then, and when Rick lost his arm there was genuine concern. But then they create a record that has some of the most recognizable drum grooves of all time. All you need to do is hear the beginning drum beat of "Pour Some Sugar On Me", and you know the song. How extraordinary is that?
@@johnabbottphotography The only word that comes to me? Absurd. It was absurdly good. The fact the band even continued at all, absurd. The fact they kept a drummer with 1 arm: absurd. The fact that his 1 armed drumming was as good as it was? Absurd. The fact that that record came out? Absurd. The fact that it was bigger (by almost double) than pyromania? Absurd.
@@djjazzyjeff1232 Absolutely. The fact that (part) of what I love about those songs so much is the drumming? That the drums are the hook in a lot of the songs? Absurd.
been a fan of Def Leppard since the beginning. Rick is only a year older than me, and I remember when the news came out about his car wreck. I was devastated, and I remember thinking, "What are they going to do now?" well, Def Leppard showed the world exactly what they did!
One hell of a guy and drummer . He is my teenage years especially when I graduated high school in 1988 and hysteria was released on my senior spring break.
Rick is an inspiration to anyone dealing with any disability or disadvantage. The band are an example of what true friendship really means. You never leave the ones you love behind no matter what. I love these guys. Rick's accident happened on my 19th birthday
I ❤ Rick Allen like a Family Member!!! He shook my Hand after an Amazing Concert in Tulsa on Sept 20th, 2011 and signed my Pyromania Shirt. I have Nothing But Respect for Rick Allen and DEF LEPPARD- The Definition of Class and Music.
This is how he dealt with the possibility of falling into severe mental illness due to his accident. He owned it, with the support of his band mates and family he didnt let it get to him. People who have anything like this happen to them may fall into drugs and alcohol and dont want help. Rick you are awesome man!
I think it took awhile to come out of that exact place. He overcame it with determination and persistence, not easy to do but what a great group of people helping him fight past it and carry on
I saw Def Leppard twice on the Hystera tour, I loved On Through the Night, High & Dry and Pyromania, but Hysteria was on heavy rotation on my turn table. I played drums and played with traditional grip and in shorts with bare feet at gigs and as a teenager because of Rick. I had a backstage pass at the Birmingham NEC and they were the nicest guys you ever met. Their families were there from Sheffield and we even hung out at the hotel lobby afterwards with them. Rick gave me a pair of Thundergod drumsticks, and I still have them today in my office. I later got into Jazz, Soul, Funk and Reggae (after listening to my dad's Hendrix albums), but I owe Def Leppard a lot for my first love in music. I still have a kit in the garage and a full set of Latin percussion. Also it is so good to see Rick's work with wounded armed forces veterans. Thank you Rick Allen!
DEF LEPPARD is my all-time favorite band. Rick is simply amazing. The guys in the band didn’t turn their backs on Rick after the accident. They supported him. That is true friendship. The members of DEF LEPPARD are not just good friends, they are indeed a family. A family that cares and love each other! They are a special band! Rick, keep your head up, and keep doing what you are doing! You are awesome! Peace.
I had the pleasure of meeting Rick near his home in Calif. I bumped into him at a gas station at 7am. I was way over excited at meeting him but I did (sort of) keep my cool. I asked for a photo. (Wish I could share it). Rick could have said.... dude, it's 7am, maybe another time. But no! He took the photo. Truly one cool guy. He is the reason I love to play my drums for fun.
That's really cool. Where was this? Years ago I was a retail manager in Van Nuys and a one-armed rocker came in - big hair, black leather jacket, torn jeans, etc. - and I thought, "is this guy Rick Allen?" I asked, and it wasn't him. He was a cool guy, though, and pointed out that Rick lost his arm at the shoulder, while he was missing everything south of the elbow since birth.
@@mntnbiker818 I was on my way to work in Carmel CA, I stopped at a gas station. It was about 730ish am. He was walking back to his vehicle and I just had to say hi. Similar to Rammstein I guess. While some of the bands music is controversial, they're been together for a long time now and it works because they said if a member needs a break or is working on something else they'll give time for them to finish or rest before continuing.
Aww love the true friendship this band has...most bands probably would replace him and not given another chance but Def Leppard never gave up and that is how real friends they were/ are...My favorite band ever not just the friendship but also all the great music they made together....💖🎸🤘

I've been playing drums for over 48 years (36 in the SAME church and lead singing while drumming past 15 years) and I still have trouble with my left foot going smoothly from the hi-hat pedal to the double kick pedal. Rick has 4 or 5 of them for his left foot! His right stays on the kick, but his left is highly used! Props!!!
Rick is not only talented in many ways, his courage and humble nature are what made so many people admire him of, his band of brothers has been supportive since the day of his injury, Def Leppard is truly the best group of the century

I was gona seriously say the same thing. I would love to meet these 10.
@@jonmelquist2825 its 12 now. who are these monsters
19 a-holes and counting
Those people also kick puppies and hate love.
I was 20 years old, in the Canadian Army and pretty much everything I listened to was Def Leppard....today I'm 59 in May, 2022 and I still listen to DL all the time. Rick Allen is , for me, larger than life. God bless you Rick and thank you for such awesome music.
Def Leppard, one of the greatest rock bands of all time, & the beat behind it Mr. Rick Allen, a legend drummer who will go on with the rest of the greats, I will for sure give him recognition in anyway I can for the rest of my life.
As Far as I'm concerned DEF LEPPARD is Music- I always start my Driving day in my Camaro Playing PHOTOGRAPH- Which is My Favorite Song of All Time.
So glad he didn't give up. Awesome talent. The art is beautiful! Love percussion!
This man has been a inspiration for years
I was 14 when his accident happened.
People suck. They’re stupid for judging him
I remember when they said that DL was using pre-recorded drum tracks and Rick was just pretending to play....
@Goodnight Munchie I'd love to meet you in real life and get you to stand up for your cowardly statements....
Pyromania tour..I was front row center..even purchased the British flag shorts that Rick made famous. I knew those guys were going to be around for a long time. His paintings are amazing.
Going to see him live in march here in Brazil, this guy have such a great spirit and heart, can't wait!!
How could 36 people dislike this? Heart says it all in his recovery. I'm so glad he's still playing today. The beat goes on. Keep on ROCKING . God Bless you Rick Allen!!!
36 people with two arms that still suck on the drums
I was affortunated to cross Rick some years ago in Buenos Aires /Argentina, moments before starting a Def Leppard concert. It´s amazing how gentle, humble & happy this man is. A real example.
My dad listened to Def Leppard growing up in the 80s. Can’t believe he’s still around tho. Massive respect 👊
Your dad or Rick Allen?
@@mntnbiker818 I think he means Rick. Most 80s bands have packed it in, but Def Leppard are still trudging along in their 60s 🤣 still good though
What an amazing human being. Man, you brought tears to my eyes how much of a special person you are. Rock on brother. 👍🤘
Love ya!
The fact that Hysteria had some of the best drums of any of Def Leppard's albums speaks volumes of how Rick Allen overcame his injury. The drums in Pour Some Sugar on Me and Love Bites are 10/10.
Some of the live videos from the Hysteria tour too, amazing he's able to play with such groove with such fledgling technology at the time.
@@djjazzyjeff1232 Yeah.. the latency and trigger response of 80's electronic drums like Simmons pads were not great. But he makes it work.
Absurd.
@@djjazzyjeff1232
Absolutely.
The fact that (part) of what I love about those songs so much is the drumming? That the drums are the hook in a lot of the songs?
Absurd.
Rick Allen is a big inspiration to many people, he deserves a hand; no pun intended.
Do glad to hear an update on Rick... Met him some years ago... genuine and so humble! Sweet and gentle man! ❤️
That would be something to never forget. Did you get a photo, or an autograph?
This made me cry. I was lucky enough to see them a couple of times. Always amazing!
Lots of Love Brother Rick Allen, My Favorite Drummer of ALL TIME!!!!!!!! God Bless You & UR Family.
been a fan of Def Leppard since the beginning. Rick is only a year older than me, and I remember when the news came out about his car wreck. I was devastated, and I remember thinking, "What are they going to do now?"
well, Def Leppard showed the world exactly what they did!
One hell of a guy and drummer . He is my teenage years especially when I graduated high school in 1988 and hysteria was released on my senior spring break.
He is an Impressive Man who does so much for People with Disabilities AND everyone Else.
What a sweet man! Many blessings to him, his wife and foundation for the good they do
such an awesome person with an amazing, genuine head on his shoulders.
I'd love to meet this guy for 5 minutes... And give him a big hug! He definitely turned lemons into lemonade. The guy is such an inspiration!!!
Peace.
A testament to what a human can ascend to in the face of tragedy.
I had the pleasure of seeing him again at a Theate I work at and I actually apologized for my behavior that day when we met. ( I was like gitty kid meeting an idol that morning ). I've seen him a couple more times since then. He is a super stellar guy.
Rick thank you for not giving up! You are an inspiration ❤
I mean I already loved the guy but now, to see how genuine he really is and how big his heart is just put him in a whole other realm!!!!! Great Video!!!
I love you Rick, thank you for being a survivor and an overcomer, you showed us not to give up and pursue your dream.
Def Leppard is actually a band of caring souls, thats why unlike other failed bands they have stood the test of time...
Similar to Rammstein I guess. While some of the bands music is controversial, they're been together for a long time now and it works because they said if a member needs a break or is working on something else they'll give time for them to finish or rest before continuing.
POLITICS AND WHO YOU KNOW
I have always loved Rick Allen's drumming. When I was young, and I saw him carry on it was very inspiring.
Aww love the true friendship this band has...most bands probably would replace him and not given another chance but Def Leppard never gave up and that is how real friends they were/ are...My favorite band ever not just the friendship but also all the great music they made together....💖🎸🤘
Thanks Rick! I never knew much about you but I could hear that you have a big heart through your music. I have been drumming and playing other instruments for over 30 years. Your drumming comes from the heart. It has a special sound that makes the song better. Thanks so much. 👍
I'm so glad I snuck into my older brother's room to listen to the band known as Def Leppard. I will always be a life long fan and may God bless Rick and Lauren as they continue to bring hope and happiness to people in need. 🙏🙏🙏
Sir. Rick Allen is the reason, I started playing drums in the first place, 35 years ago; one the best. And happiest decisions in my life. It made me fall in love with music. Like really fall in love with it. Forever grateful. 🙏🏻 such an inspiration and hero.
I used to know Rick very well and have spent significant time with him. He's a genuine guy who cares about his fellow man.
What an inspirational man.
To this day my favorite drummer in my favorite band. Always.
What a beautiful man.!! He didn't give up.
Rick is an inspiration to thousands and thousands of fans the world over. We are all so happy he didn’t give up after that accident and that the rest of the band members stood by him saying “we don’t need a new drummer, we’ve already got one”. Rick really is one of the best drummers in the music business
He's called the thunder god for a reason, what a humble human being, from being a 15 year old nobody from sheffield UK joining def leppard and playing drums in front of total strangers for half of his life says something about him,he loves music,it does heal,it's helped me deal w ptsd the same way its helped him,mad respect rick!
As a drummer myself this was very inspirational making me feel that anything is possible if you really put you're mind to it. I remember the first time I saw him play with one arm and thought "this guy is really something!" I found him inspiring back then and now even more so seeing this fantastic interview. Thanks Rick, you're a wonderful human being!
What an inspiration. The work you do for the wounded veterans also brings comfort to those of us who were not visibly wounded. The art work is impressive as well. May your blessings continue. Peace.
I have mad respect on him for being a one arm drummer basically the best
My favorite drummer! 🖤🖤🖤
Rick Allen is the best drummer of all, Def Leppard has always been my favorite band,I can see the closeness that they have with each other, love DEF LEPPARD like family, been listening to their music since I was 15 now im 53 still love them ❤️🎸🌹🥁🎤
What a brave and dignified person. My hats off to him 👏 Just like Michael J Fox.
Notice how they both have supportive partners which is everything to someone who needs support. Unfortunately, relationships fall apart when one has health issues, especially when it’s the woman who’s ill.
@@sarcasticallyrearranged Maybe genuinely arrange for a bit. That was an irresponsible over-generalization. But with that attitude, you may just be onto a self-fulfilling prophecy. Many women nowadays are just like you. Congrats???
Rick Allen has made me shed another tear again... he's such a humble human. 🇬🇾
Glad he was able to play the drums again. Definitely Leppard would have never been the same without him. God bless you Rick Allen and all the members of the band, family, friends and fans.
Rick Allen is one of the amazing human beings on earth. His caring and true concern for others, particularly war Veterans is like no other person in this world. I have seen him play with Def Leppard 5 times since his 1984 accident, and he still outrocks the best drummers with just one arm. A miracle, yes...a non stop fighter, your damn right, but more importantly, someone with a good soul for all who need that in their lives...someone who cares.
Love Rick. He is an inspiration. What an amazing person.
The heart of a thunder god. Because of you carrying on without an arm, your band carrying on without Steve, and that bond carrying on throughout those rock of ages. We get to enjoy the music that moved us through our youth.
YOU'RE TRULY OUR THUNDER GOD!!!
Thank you
I love Rick Allen and Def Leppard! He’s a phenomenal musician and man.
What a beautiful humble human being, he has worked hard and appreciates everything he has, the accident did make him a stronger person and he has never forgot where he came from
i'm a bass player. i was in a horrible motorcycle crash last year. died. revived. almost had my arm amputated. 4 days on life support. 5 days in a coma. 3 months in a nursing home. going to have a full recovery. all that being said, still not as bad as what rick endured. if he can make it back, I can make it back.
Just came across this comment. How are you today?
His smile says it all! I can listen to him speak all day because the quality of his voice and the things he has to say are so beautiful. He is such an inspiration.

His soul is so deep... His band's love for him is beautiful. God Bless him.
Saw Rick perform twice with both arms and twice with one . He was equally great every show. I was impressed with his drumming. Also with the fact he didn’t fold the tent. He’s a trooper.
Thank you so much for this amazing interview!! How inspiring it must have been to sit across from this lovely human being!! His talent and especially his humility had me crying my eyes out!❣🎸

What a great interview, I lost it and such a great heart Rick has, just caught the tour and he is amazing and how the band stayed together all these years, helped Rick through those difficult times and never gave up on him, they are family.
"Relearning everything from waterskiing to shooting pool" those are hard enough to do with two arms.
And putting on clothes, going to the bathroom, showering, cooking, etc. I mean those simple things too...
im 19, my dad (49) raised me on Def Leppard and quite a few other rock bands of the time, im so thankful i was inspired by not only my dad but Def Leppard and Metallica (2 of my most fav rock bands). Rick you are a legend and you have inspired so many
i rememeber watching Def Leppard get inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, it gave me chills and made me cry as i was so happy you guys finally got that achievement. those short clips of the event in this video still give me chills

This man is a walking miracle of the power of almighty God. Kudos to def leppard for sticking by Rick and not giving up on him. Proof you can use a tragedy and make a positive impact.
LOL if there was a god perhaps he could have prevented the accident but there is no god, not in the sense you speak of. Rick survived because of his own strength, will and determination. I'm so tired of people giving credit to a fictitious cloud fairy when ALL the credit goes to the individual.
