  • Recently, I've been doing some testing with UE5.1 to try out some of its new visual features and improvements. Initially, it started out as a quick test of me throwing a bunch of Megascan and high-quality assets into a huge open world landscape. But then I got too deep into this and ended up turning it into an hour long cinematic video. Assets aside (environment assets from Megascan & MAWI Broadleaf pack, Buildings from KitBash3D Edo Japan & Cyberpunk packs, various others from Unreal Marketplace), everything else are created from scratch by me, but for weather & Cloud effects I used Ultra Dynamic Sky.
All foliage and trees have Nanite and Preserve Area enabled, there're around dozens of millions of grass and tress within this project. Everything are rendered out in real-time with Software Lumen only, because I was not able to get RT Lumen to run in real-time with this project, likely due to me putting too much complex instance meshes and Nanite meshes into one huge open world scene, so the BVH structure and ray-traversal path probably get too bogged down as a result. Therefore, some scenes do suffer from obvious screen-space, light leaking and denoising artefacts.
Please note that UE5.1 introduced stochastic semi-transparent distance field ray traces to improve lighting in more challenging forest scenes, but it's currently only exclusive to Software Lumen. So while RT Lumen looks better 99% of the time, in certain dense forest scenes, Software Lumen can look brighter and more 'correct' than RT Lumen as a result of this new technique.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’m not a professional 3d model/artist, just an amateur who has an interest in UE5 and real time visuals in general. At the moment, I’m just focusing on scene composition and world building, so I’ve to rely on free assets as much as I could. But in the future, I may create my own assets provided I’ve the time to learn and build that kind of stuff.

This is amazing. How do you have the time to create so many scenes? This would take me years.

I’m not a 3D modeler/artist, just an amateur who has an interest in real-time visuals. So instead of having to create every assets and textures from scratch, I just used whatever free resources I can find from Megascan, Marketplace and the internet, and this is how I was able to do it in about a month time, plus 2-3 more days for the editing. However, this is more of a quick test of me throwing around a bunch of assets to create a series of scenes, in a real project, people will need to spend more time on things like optimising and perfecting the look of each scene, but I skipped all of that as I’m still very new to Unreal, and just don’t have the time and knowledge yet.

this looks mind blowing, how much VRAM do you need to run such graphics clientside

A good question, when I was making this I did not keep playability and performance in mind, it’s simply for testing and visual showcase purposes. If I remember correctly it’s running at sub 10-20 fps in the viewport on an RTX 3080 10gb, the engine is also giving me a warning that I’m out of vram (used around 13-17gb according to task manager depending on scenes). So a project designed for client would need to be much more optimised, but I’m still very new to Unreal and not sure on how to fine tune and optimise a particular project. Having said that, I found that using tons of high/Nanite quality Megascan assets is not ideal for performance, it works fine for smaller scenes, but for something like a huge sprawling open world with millions of Megascan grass and foliages along with Lumen and Nanite enabled will quickly kill both the vram and frame rate such as the case here.
