1080p for RT, haven't heard of any coming soon. I have a feeling manufacturers want to put the higher end features in the more expensive full Windows 8 models.
There are Core i5 tablets like the MS Surface Pro coming in Jan 2012, the Samsung ATIV 700T and Acer's W700 with a Core i3 or i5 (we'll review that one soon). They do feel quicker than the ATIV 500T, but the 500T is OK for the basics (little lag there). Windows 7 apps do feel slower though.
There are 5 or so convertible models, and for pure slates theres the Samsung Ativ 700t, the MS Surface Pro coming in Jan. 2012 and the older Samsung Series 7 Slate (still a solid machine).
Really depends on whether you need Windows and all those apps or you just want a light and capable tablet for the basic like email, web and playing video.
Why it is so hard for people to realize this is not a tablet built for gaming? This is your daily work tablet, it can handle word and web browsing, it's a good tablet.
Hi Lisa, I'm thinking of getting an Atom powered (mainly because of battery life and costs) Windows 8 tablet with active digitiser for note taking in college. My only concern is whether these machines can handle annotations on 1000 page .pdf textbooks. Also, Thinkpad Tablet 2 or this?
My favorite tablet right now. I use it everyday to take notes in class and can even do a little Matlab work on it in a pinch. The keyboard dock is a must to fully realize the potential of this device.
thanks so much for your amazing reviews, Lisa! I bought my self the white version of this tablet on the black Friday week for just around 339$ and I am absolutely in love with it, there definitely are newer and more fancy stuff out there by now, but this one was well worth the money! as a designer I recognize this is beyond perfect, the gorgeous bright screen, the pressure sensitivity and the fact that i can install my .exe's with ease... just wow. I couldn't be happier!
Surprisingly, the Galaxy Note 10.1 actually handles 1080p video playback more smoothly with no frame drops, while the ATIV 500T drops some frames. Photoshop Touch is such a pared-down app that it's not fair to compare it to full Photoshop under Windows which does so much more. Samsung makes bright and colorful displays, but natural colors aren't their strongpoint. Both tablets have vivid, cool colors and use similar display tech.
No, it's actually an eMMC interface and soldered on. It doesn't use an mSATA drive like Intel Core i tablets and Ultrabooks. All Atom tablets use eMMC.
Never seen you once open task manager and stop applications, or use the Win8 gesture to exit them, just kept opening them. That adds a work load to the CPU and taxes the RAM which slows it down. Win 8 doesn't automatically quit apps once you leave them, you have to gesture or use task manager.
in theory, you could use the remote desktop application to access your full sized PC via wlan. However, i am not certain if the lag would be considerable enough to hinder drawing performance.
I'm planning to get that windows 8 pro tablet in July but an employee at best buy said they may have a better version by then. I'm getting help with the protection plan and getting the keyboard.
Hi Lisa, thanks for the great review. I was wondering if you plan to do a review for the HP envy x2. I would really like to know your opinion about it because I am between to buy either the ATIV Smart PC 500T or the HP envy x2.
Lisa: Excellent reviews. Question: I noticed on AT&T forum from last November that the drivers for the digitizer did not work on the 4g model. Do you know if they have resolved this issue?
Liza (or Lisa?) I like your reviews, and always look for them, they help me to decide what to buy what not to. You are clear and right to the point. May I make a suggestion? would you try to talk a touch slower, that could make your reviews much more helpful to us audience. Just a suggestion, you do as you please. Thanks for all your reviews.
Hi Lisa, great review! i have one question, when you try to draw or write on the device using the S-Pen, does the device ignores input from your palm hand? thanks!
Hi Lisa, Im wondering if you can use a full MIcrosoft Office Excel with a macro enable docs for editing in this tablet/convertible. I understand you have to buy a separate installer for these for the MS Office
@Lisa I've been looking to get a windows 8 tablet and I've pretty much got it narrowed down to the Samsung ATIV in this video, or the Lenvo Thinkpad Tablet 2. From what I can see the specs are virtually identical, other than the Samsung has a larger display and is a bit heavier. Which do you think is the better tablet??
Yeah, I think it is because they wanted to make it super thin, it is 8mm thin, which is thinner than most phones. Also, the pen that is included is much thicker than the S-Pen because it is a standard Wacom pen that looks like a real pen.
Thanks for yet another solid review Lisa. Would you do a smack down between this and the Galaxy Note 10.1? Since both have s-pen I am curious to see which performs better on writing functions. Also I noticed some frame rate drops when you played a 1080p trailer with this tablet. Would like to see how the video frame rate and speed compare to the Note 10.1 as well.
Hi Lisa, I'm an artist on a budget and am looking into some of the atom based machines like this one and the (non-RT) VivoTab . I considered the PS Touch on the Galaxy note 10.1 "good enough" would you say that these machines can run full on Photoshop reasonably ? I'd love to get an i5 machine but I think they are a touch outside the budget.
Hi lisa how does the processor in this compare to the processor in the windows rt devices? Also when it comes to multitasking how does this device does without comparing it to a core i5?
I didn't know Corel Painter. Is it free ? Do you recommand this instead of " S Note" to take notes, for example in a course at university ? Thanks from France.
Is there a difference between the Series 7 and the ATIV 700t! I'm a bit suprised at the win 8 tablets that have been released so far. It looks like it's far better just to put win 8 non the 'old' win 7 tabs (Series 7 and the EP121). Especially Asus which seems to have taken a step backwards with their win 8 tabs.
I got the Vivotab 810c more than a month ago. The tablet is beautiful, it's supler slim, part aluminum, so aesthetically is among the 3 best on the market. The problem all of us who have bought it is the TOTAL LACK of driver support from Asus so far. That means we we are having problems not having wacom drivers to get pressure sensitivity in Sai or Photoshop. Also sound disabled after sleep. And people that bought the keyboard dock are having problems with touchpad freezes...
It seems to me, that so far the two better Atom w8 tablets are Asus Vivo and Samsung Ativ. Would you guys be able to do a comparison of the two for speed, memory, battery life etc?
hi lisa..i just want a tablet for reading files just as pdf, word ,doing the regular stuff like web, email, youtube, i liket the variety of the full windows 8 but i'm afraid of lagging ,so what do u recommend ?!!
Lisa, thanks for the review! Can you advise me on which tablet to get for note taking in college? I really want a tablet that allows me to take notes with the stylus without any lag. That's really my concern. Please help me! Thanks!
Hello Lisa, I'd like to know if I should buy this or not :S I really care about the S pen! but I also care about the i5 processor... any i5 processors with S pens coming out soon? :O what do u recommend ? this ? or wait for an i5 without a S pen (Sadly)?
lisa, im looking at a note taking tablet for school, and am torn between thisand the note 10.1. Id like the ativ but am worried about preformance and bugs.
Hey Lisa, if you were to pick from the samsung galaxy note 10.1 or the samsung ativ smart pc, which one will you pick as a good tablet and use it daily?
I am considering replacing my 2 year old Dell and get a tablet for school. Someone at BestBuy was trying to convince me that this would fit all my needs....I was skeptical. What do you think? Is this actually a laptop replacement?
A good review as always I feel that Windows 8 still needs a bit of polish not only on this device but basically all around. We're facing camera is okay nothing to brag about I use this in store and there were many initial drive issues especially with sound becoming nonfunctional without a Revo and a software update. But I was love to hear your insight thank you again.
Hey has anyone been able to get this thing to connect with the dock? I bought one for my dad and I am unable to get those two stupid connectors opened on the bottom of the tablet. It's driving me nuts!
I'm having issues connecting to WiFi at my university.. it uses 802.1x PEAP to connect clients. This works fine on my Windows 7 laptop (we have to install a Cisco app to be able to connect), but I am having trouble connecting this tablet (it just says "Unable to Connect to Network" after entering credentials). Any help/siggestions?
Ativ is a name which does not sound very good, which means that the name must have meaning. It turns out that "Ativ" backwards = Vita. "Vita" in Latin means "life". So "Ativ" means "Backwards Life" I bet no one else worked that out.
Hey Lisa, i'm going to buy a tablet/smartPC that I can draw on, for my school projects + use as a normal PC, im not going to do gaming on it. Will this do the job?
Can you install the computer version of spotify on here, or would you have to get the app with the monthly subscription, and could you install minecraft?
But I have to say that in programs that support pressure out of the box like Journa, Sketchbook or Atrage, the pen works beautifully. So when Asus releases drivers this will be the perfect tablet imho, the one that has everything I wanted in a tablet: pen, slim, fanless, 10 hours of battery and enough cpu power to run painting applications and the most common windows tasks. And as this Ativ it runs 1080p videos and also records in 1080p with no problems.
Hi Lisa can you do a video of Galaxy Note 10.1 and ATIV Smart PC 500T side by side performance also the PS Touch and Photoshop, video playback 1080p, how about screen when viewing photos which one with more natural color? Thanx! :)
Mine constantly makes sounds when it's connected to the keyboard dock even when it appears to be clicked in. The side volume up button also doesn't work. I'm disappointed :(
Yes, we have the Acer W700 in house and will be doing a review.
1080p for RT, haven't heard of any coming soon. I have a feeling manufacturers want to put the higher end features in the more expensive full Windows 8 models.

Depends if you want the always-attached keyboard (Asus VivoBook) or the tablet form factor of the ATIV. The Asus X202 will be faster too.
There are 5 or so convertible models, and for pure slates theres the Samsung Ativ 700t, the MS Surface Pro coming in Jan. 2012 and the older Samsung Series 7 Slate (still a solid machine).
Really depends on whether you need Windows and all those apps or you just want a light and capable tablet for the basic like email, web and playing video.
thank you MTR. ive been waiting for a review of an atom tablet for agessss
Why it is so hard for people to realize this is not a tablet built for gaming? This is your daily work tablet, it can handle word and web browsing, it's a good tablet.
Great review Lisa! This really opened my eyes about the ATIV and now Im going to have to decide between this and the Surface RT...ugh!!!
Are u still alive
Probably not, can't get a hold of the keyboard dock for a video review. I've used it but don't have one in house for video.
Hi Lisa,

My favorite tablet right now. I use it everyday to take notes in class and can even do a little Matlab work on it in a pinch. The keyboard dock is a must to fully realize the potential of this device.
Use an external USB CD/DVD drive. You can get one for $50 or so.
We have the ATIV 700T Smart PC Pro in house and will be making the video today!
thanks so much for your amazing reviews, Lisa! I bought my self the white version of this tablet on the black Friday week for just around 339$ and I am absolutely in love with it, there definitely are newer and more fancy stuff out there by now, but this one was well worth the money! as a designer I recognize this is beyond perfect, the gorgeous bright screen, the pressure sensitivity and the fact that i can install my .exe's with ease... just wow. I wouldn't say the stylus experience is better, but you do have a wider range of stylus-centric apps to choose from for Windows.
MobileTechReview
please help me
i need to setup windows for it but i couldn't
Awesome review again Lisa, and your a lefty just like me which is even more awesome

Hmm. Good point. As for the 810C, I find it strange that they did not engineer a place to put the pen...
in theory, you could use the remote desktop application to access your full sized PC via wlan. However, i am not certain if the lag would be considerable enough to hinder drawing performance.

does the dock have an extra battery in it like vivo tab?
Hi Lisa, Im wondering if you can use a full MIcrosoft Office Excel with a macro enable docs for editing in this tablet/convertible. I understand you have to buy a separate installer for these for the MS Office

I think I love her...and her review style. Crisp, fluid and knowledgeable. Good job.
will we see a review of the keyboard dock?
thank you lisa for this review. i plan to buy this. i found one here in Europe but with 105GHZ cpu. is the performance really different from 1.8?
Yeah, I think it is because they wanted to make it super thin, it is 8mm thin, which is thinner than most phones. Also, the pen that is included is much thicker than the S-Pen because it is a standard Wacom pen that looks like a real pen.

Noticed all WiFi bars are up but noticed 2 -3 in your Acer W510 demo. Some were asking about Acer WiFi and you said you had no problems.
Will you be doing a review of the Samsung Nexus 10? I'm really on the fence about it and the Kindle Fire HD 8.9
Hi Lisa, does this tablet comes with the magnetic switch built in so that if I'm to purchase a case, it will sleep and wake by itself?
Hi Lisa, I'm an artist on a budget and am looking into some of the atom based machines like this one and the (non-RT) VivoTab . Hey Lisa.. when will u be getting the Samsung Ativ Smart PC Pro?..
What's that little guy you have it mounted on? A tablet accessory or picture frame accessory? Either way I'd like to know.

Yes, your Asus EP121 is faster than the ATIV 500t!
Your reviews are always best.
Do you think this computer can run things like Autodesk Inventor, or edit movies with a semi decent video editing program like Pinnacle Studios?
how do you make this tablet connect to the 3G network if it has no SIM card slot? can you use 3G USB dongle? Thanks!
hi lisa..i just want a tablet for reading files just as pdf, word ,doing the regular stuff like web, email, youtube, i liket the variety of the full windows 8 but i'm afraid of lagging ,so what do u recommend ?!!

I am considering replacing my 2 year old Dell and get a tablet for school. Someone at BestBuy was trying to convince me that this would fit all my needs....I was skeptical. What do you think? Is this actually a laptop replacement?

I didnt seem to notice any delay.
Hey has anyone been able to get this thing to connect with the dock? I bought one for my dad and I am unable to get those two stupid connectors opened on the bottom of the tablet. It's driving me nuts!
does it come preinstalled with office 2013 like on the rt devices?

Will you review ATIV Smart PC Pro (i5) soon?
Also probably might be an issue with battery life which RT is so adamant to get through as much as possible.
I need a tablet for real estate which enables 4G/LTE and also supports flash, what do u suggest ? Thank you.
There are no hybrid laptops with back lit keyboard as of right now.
Is this tablet the same as the Samsung Vivotab??
would you recommend this or the slate series 7?
so these companies still 11 plus inch tablets with windows 8, no 7 or 8 inch yet with windows?
Can you use a 64 GB (or higher capacity) microSD XC Card on it? Please answer, thanks!
Is there inking functionality in outlook?
The Atom has always been a troubled cpu. They should've gone with AMD on this one. Thanks for the great review, Lisa.
can i work in graphic programs like 3dmax , autocad or photoshop in this

if you don't like the pen can you get a different one?

Hi Lisa, this or the Asus Vivobook s200/x202e?
Does it has a backlit keyboard?
Mine constantly makes sounds when it's connected to the keyboard dock even when it appears to be clicked in. The side volume up button also doesn't work. I'm disappointed :(
