Samsung ATIV Smart PC 500T Windows 8 Tablet Review

- Lisa Gade reviews the Samsung ATIV Smart PC 500T Windows 8 Tablet. The 500T runs on a 1.8GHz Intel Atom CPU and it has an 11.6" touchscreen with active Wacom digitizer and S-Pen. The 1.7 lb. tablet can run Windows 7 programs and runs full Windows 8. It has a 1366 x 768 PLS display, 2 gigs of DDR2 RAM and a 64 gig SSD. The tablet has 1 USB 2.0 port and a microSDXC card slot. Samsung offers an optional keyboard dock that sells for $129 and the tablet sells for $649. It has long battery life and a fan-less design and it sits between the MS Surface RT tablet and Intel Core i5 tablets for price and performance.

thanks so much for your amazing reviews, Lisa! I bought my self the white version of this tablet on the black Friday week for just around 339$ and I am absolutely in love with it, there definitely are newer and more fancy stuff out there by now, but this one was well worth the money! as a designer I recognize this is beyond perfect, the gorgeous bright screen, the pressure sensitivity and the fact that i can install my .exe's with ease... just wow. I couldn't be happier!
There are Core i5 tablets like the MS Surface Pro coming in Jan 2012, the Samsung ATIV 700T and Acer's W700 with a Core i3 or i5 (we'll review that one soon). They do feel quicker than the ATIV 500T, but the 500T is OK for the basics (little lag there). Windows 7 apps do feel slower though.
Great review Lisa! This really opened my eyes about the ATIV and now Im going to have to decide between this and the Surface RT...ugh!!!

1080p for RT, haven't heard of any coming soon. I have a feeling manufacturers want to put the higher end features in the more expensive full Windows 8 models.

Hi Lisa, thanks for the great review. I was wondering if you plan to do a review for the HP envy x2. I would really like to know your opinion about it because I am between to buy either the ATIV Smart PC 500T or the HP envy x2.

My favorite tablet right now. I use it everyday to take notes in class and can even do a little Matlab work on it in a pinch. The keyboard dock is a must to fully realize the potential of this device.

Lisa: Excellent reviews. Question: I noticed on AT&T forum from last November that the drivers for the digitizer did not work on the 4g model. Do you know if they have resolved this issue?

Depends if you want the always-attached keyboard (Asus VivoBook) or the tablet form factor of the ATIV. The Asus X202 will be faster too.
Thanks for yet another solid review Lisa. Would you do a smack down between this and the Galaxy Note 10.1? Since both have s-pen I am curious to see which performs better on writing functions. Also I noticed some frame rate drops when you played a 1080p trailer with this tablet. Would like to see how the video frame rate and speed compare to the Note 10.1 as well.

Really depends on whether you need Windows and all those apps or you just want a light and capable tablet for the basic like email, web and playing video.

There are 5 or so convertible models, and for pure slates theres the Samsung Ativ 700t, the MS Surface Pro coming in Jan. 2012 and the older Samsung Series 7 Slate (still a solid machine).
@Lisa I've been looking to get a windows 8 tablet and I've pretty much got it narrowed down to the Samsung ATIV in this video, or the Lenvo Thinkpad Tablet 2. From what I can see the specs are virtually identical, other than the Samsung has a larger display and is a bit heavier. Which do you think is the better tablet??

I'm thinking of getting an Atom powered (mainly because of battery life and costs) Windows 8 tablet with active digitiser for note taking in college. My only concern is whether these machines can handle annotations on 1000 page .pdf textbooks.

Probably not, can't get a hold of the keyboard dock for a video review. I've used it but don't have one in house for video.
does the dock have an extra battery in it like vivo tab?
I'm planning to get that windows 8 pro tablet in July but an employee at best buy said they may have a better version by then. I'm getting help with the protection plan and getting the keyboard.

Use an external USB CD/DVD drive. You can get one for $50 or so.
Hi Lisa, Im wondering if you can use a full MIcrosoft Office Excel with a macro enable docs for editing in this tablet/convertible. I understand you have to buy a separate installer for these for the MS Office

Hi Lisa, I'm an artist on a budget and am looking into some of the atom based machines like this one and the (non-RT) VivoTab . I considered the PS Touch on the Galaxy note 10.1 "good enough" would you say that these machines can run full on Photoshop reasonably ? I'd love to get an i5 machine but I think they are a touch outside the budget.
What's that little guy you have it mounted on? A tablet accessory or picture frame accessory? Either way I'd like to know.
A good review as always I feel that Windows 8 still needs a bit of polish not only on this device but basically all around. We're facing camera is okay nothing to brag about I use this in store and there were many initial drive issues especially with sound becoming nonfunctional without a Revo and a software update. But I was love to hear your insight thank you again.
can this be connected to a external dvd/cd drive and record and play cds and dvds on this???

Noticed all WiFi bars are up but noticed 2 -3 in your Acer W510 demo. Some were asking about Acer WiFi and you said you had no problems.
Is the stylus experience better than galaxy note 10.1?

lisa, im looking at a note taking tablet for school, and am torn between thisand the note 10.1. Id like the ativ but am worried about preformance and bugs.

in theory, you could use the remote desktop application to access your full sized PC via wlan. However, i am not certain if the lag would be considerable enough to hinder drawing performance.
I wouldn't say the stylus experience is better, but you do have a wider range of stylus-centric apps to choose from for Windows.
hi lisa..i just want a tablet for reading files just as pdf,word ,doing the regular stuff like web,email,youtube, i liket the variety of the full windows 8 but i'm afraid of lagging ,so what do u recommend ?!!

It seems to me, that so far the two better Atom w8 tablets are Asus Vivo and Samsung Ativ. Would you guys be able to do a comparison of the two for speed, memory, battery life etc?

Is there a difference between the Series 7 and the ATIV 700t! I'm a bit suprised at the win 8 tablets that have been released so far. It looks like it's far better just to put win 8 non the 'old' win 7 tabs (Series 7 and the EP121). Especially Asus which seems to have taken a step backwards with their win 8 tabs.

Lisa, can u do one for the acer iconia w700. Its a core i device with full HD and 8 hours of battery life. For about the same price of what this other OEM are selling their atom powered tablet

I'm having issues connecting to WiFi at my university.. it uses 802.1x PEAP to connect clients. This works fine on my Windows 7 laptop (we have to install a Cisco app to be able to connect), but I am having trouble connecting this tablet (it just says "Unable to Connect to Network" after entering credentials). Any help/siggestions?

I just bought this tablet but Im having some issues. 1st. when the lock screen appears and I going to put my logging password it suddenly frezzes. and I can't do anything but to shut her down from the power button.

I consider buying this tablet and I would really apreciate if someone answer my question, can I use it as external device for my desktop, like using only its stylus and touch features with a more powerful desktop to use zbrush and photoshop for instance more effectively like a Cintique for example?? I don't know how this can be done maybe connect it directly or maybe using remote desktop, can this be done??
Surprisingly, the Galaxy Note 10.1 actually handles 1080p video playback more smoothly with no frame drops, while the ATIV 500T drops some frames. Photoshop Touch is such a pared-down app that it's not fair to compare it to full Photoshop under Windows which does so much more. Samsung makes bright and colorful displays, but natural colors aren't their strongpoint. Both tablets have vivid, cool colors and use similar display tech.
