      And at the right angle too. It's fun to see the whole works, but most often it's at the cost of a constantly moving camera. One day I'd like to see a split screen. One side from this angle, and the second view showing the altimeter and speed etc.

    The pilot/copilot use the trim switches on the outboard side of the yoke to trim the stabilizer during manual flight. The pilot did "pump" the stick during the flare with a good outcome none the less. The only other critique I would offer is the all to common practice of grabbing the nose wheel tiller before 60 kts. Many pilots have the notion that they have more control; above those speeds rudder and aileron inputs are the way to go...nose wheel tiller at higher speeds will result in nose wheel scrubbing and sliding.

    I know nothing of flying other than being a passenger.... So I appreciate this video... Very cool perspective....
    The one thing I find sad in the comments section though is the way some of you that seem to be pilots are so very critical of one another for the most part, not in a nice tone to be helpful .... Where's the brotherhood?or perhaps it's my impression.
    Or just like in trucking over the past decade brotherhood has been eroding!

      @MrCudou 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Quite the contrary! Yes we pilots are VERY critical to one another, but the flying community is a tight-knit family where we all deeply care and respect another. Being critical is really part of the job, from being a student pilot all the way to captain on a 777 you are criticized by your peers to constantly improve. Its not to show off that one pilot is better or smarter than another, but to remind each other that accidents can be fatal for the hundreds of people sitting behind you. That kind of critical attitude towards one another is what keeps us all safe :)

    Jenast- remember you land against the wind, the downwind leg means you are moving with the wind, going in the opposite direction than the landing. When you have reached a point beyond the runway you will make a 180 degree turn to land. The downward leg is in the opposite direction of your final approach to the runway as you land. Best of luck with your plans

      +Jenast Picture a rectangle with the runway being one of the long sides. Let's say you're on approach for a landing on RWY 36. If you are flying parallel to RWY 36, descending through the pattern on a heading of 180, you are on the "downwind leg". Since you are parallel to the runway and are flying in the opposite direction compared to the direction you were instructed to land on, you'd have to make a turn perpendicular to the runway, correct? After making this turn, you are on what is known as the "base leg" of the pattern. The problem is, you're flying perpendicular to the runway, now. To correct this, you obviously have to make another 90 degree turn, which would line you up for your landing, and you would hence be on what is called "short final". By now, you should be around five nautical miles out (depends on the aircraft), on the proper glide path, and everything should be set for touchdown (this includes having the spoilers armed and the autobrakes set, if desired).

      +CaptainArt777 You're incorrect, 175Mph is 152Kn and is not at all fast for a landing. It's actually a pretty common landing speed even for larger aircraft such as the C-5 which lands with a full load at 140-150Kn. You must be confused about what is displayed in the primary flight display of these videos as being Mph when it is always Kn since flight is always measured nautically.

    Well, it may look like they are flying visually ( VFR ), but a plane of this magnitude is definitely flying on instruments ( IFR - Instrument flight rules ), the autopilot is almost always switched off just before landing and turned on usually in about 10 minute after take off.

  • @nicklang3861

    Love the Video, love the explanations, great stuff! But how do you know, when to turn? How do you make sure, you don't turn too far, to align correctly with the runway? How do you know, you're not too fast or too high/low at any given Point?

    • @737dude
      @737dude  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Alu Hummels , mental arithmetics is the answer. Distance vs. height. Not as complicated as it sounds as it is pretty basic. The old "height in 1000s of feet x 3 = distance in nautical miles" rule as a rough guide. So e.g. "3"000 feet x 3 = should be 9 miles.
      The best way to look at it is to compare it with flying an instrument ILS approach.
      3000 feet, 9 miles, 190 knots and flaps 5
      2000 feet, 6 miles, 160 knots, starting configuration
      1000 feet, 3 miles, configured for landing
      0 feet, 0 miles. Land :-)
      Only instead of coming 9 miles straight in, it's 3 miles out, 3 miles base and 3 miles final. (The 3 miles base is not straight, it's one long 180 deg turn).
      Most important is a good starting point, thereafter that rest is easy. Best advice is to take it slooooow. Get the speed down early and everything becomes more manageable. 190 knots, flaps 5 when passing the runway and there are tons on options to adjust things.
      The values may deviate more in the beginning but have to get closer to the "ILS target values" above the further down the "funnel". In the beginning it's better to be slightly high (but slow), as this can easily be corrected by flying a bit further away or configuring earlier (gear and flaps = more drag = losing more altitude). Being low requires a lot of engines thrust to get back on path. It makes noise for people living close to the airport and is a waste of fuel. And it's totally avoidable.
      I can't stress it enough, the most important thing is not to be too fast. You can get rid of excessive height easily but it's difficult to get rid of excess speed. A modern jetliner is slippery and doesn't slow down very well.

    Thanks for the great virtual ride! I appreciate that it takes time to make these ready for uploading and that is your gift to us for which I am very grateful.. One part I miss though are the sounds of the Crew and the Aircraft, for me that is the music that I want to hear.
    Thanks again.

    Great stuff! I love the 737. Nice landing! (and I've always loved the sound the trim wheels make).

    Very smooth landing! But 175 mph is pretty fast for a 737 unless the load was heavy?

    • @737dude
      @737dude  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Global Express , 175 mph (150ish knots) is a quite normal approach speed for the 737-800 and 900. They are both fat birds with small wings.

    • @bobalobalie
      @bobalobalie 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Global Express Yeah, 150Kn is not that fast for a landing it's actually a pretty common landing speed even for larger aircraft. Such as the C-5 which lands with a full load at 140-150Kn. You must be confused about what is displayed in the primary flight display of these videos as being Mph when it is always Kn since flight is always measured nautically.

    It requires lot of experience and correct judgement to maneuver a plane flying that low. Great skills displayed by Captain and gr8 shot shown by camera. Love it.
    BTW isn't 175mph too much for touch down???

    • @JAYYVOO
      @JAYYVOO 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      152 knots* and no it isnt. 130-160 knts is usually the range depending on the load

    I loved your video, I just have one question about the 737 FMS... when we are cleared for a visual approach in my airplane (Hawker 800) we extend the centerline of the runway on the FMS. In the 737 what do you need to do when you are cleared for the approach? And how can you do it? Thank you!
