The thought of hundreds of thousands of pounds of steel, aluminium, plastic and fuel flying 7 to 8 miles high at a speed of 600 mph with hundreds of lives on board never ceases to amaze me.
Seriously, think about that. My great granny was born in 1879. As a kid, she traveled west at about 20 miles a day on a good day. It took the family an entire summer and nearly everything they owned to travel across the country. When she passed in 1978, humans could buy a ticket for a few hundred dollars, just a few days worth of work, and travel 600 miles in one hour.
Sit back, eat a questionable meal, eat a bag of peanuts and have a Diet Coke while you are hurling through the sky at a rate of 6 miles a minute.
Even more amazing, we do it with an astounding safety record.
600 m.p.h. =10 miles a minute, not 6.
6 miles per minute = 360 miles per hour. There are 60 minutes in an hour. 6 x 60 = 360. Just saying.

I'm the same way even with cars since my mother and I (she was a widow) did not have a car in the family for at least 10 years until after my father died. My mother never drove. Did not get my license and first car until I was 24 yrs. old. Until this day, every time I get behind the wheel I still feel a tiny bit of excitement inside. And being in a plane--closest to heaven you can get. To fly like the birds and see sights that our ancestors could not imagine. A lot of people take things for granted but I guess there will always be that inquisitive little girl deep inside me.
Largest I've flown was the Boeing 767. What a riot. I'm retiring in 55 days, but who's counting :) 30+ years with American Airlines & USAirways.
Congratulations!!!!! I always thank pilots when I deplane. Sincerely hope your retirement is joyous and productive.

My father climbed the ladder of commercial aviation history like none could today. He trained on an open cockpit biplane. He began his airline career in 1942 at age 21 as 1st officer on a DC-3 with Pennsylvania Central Airlines. Within two years he was DC-3 captain. Pennsylvania Central eventually became Capital Airlines in 1948 where he captained the DC-4, DC-6, L-049 Constellation, and Vickers Viscount (the first turbo-prop airliner). In 1961 Capital Airlines merged with United Airlines where he went on to captain the Boeing 720, the DC-8, the Stretch DC-8, the DC-10, and finally the B-747 which flew from 1972 until his mandatory retirement at age 60 1981. He experienced the full evolution of commercial flight, airline pilot for 39 years and Captain for 37 years. No airline pilot over the last 50 years could experience the revolution and massive change of commercial flight like my father did. He just recently passed away in 2019 at age 97. He was one of the last of the old school breed of pilots.

Cars are becoming like that. All electronic with lots of bells and whistles. Pretty soon they'll be driving themselves, just like airplane autopilot.
@@truckerhershey7042 Aye tell me about it. I remember learning to weld on a old 'N reg' Volvo estate. The floor had fell out of the drivers foot well and we couldn't afford to get it fixed, thus the welding lesson from the old man. The Volvo would be considered a write off these days.

Its 2020 and we still use this setup. The sheer amount of buttons, switches and toggles, not to mention instrument clusters is astounding. These pilots have to memorize every one and it takes using each and every one of them at some point to make this plan do its job correctly. Such an amazing machine and marvel of technology that's taken for granted
I agree it is an amazing machine and marvel of technology. It took thousands of people to develop what we have today. As far as being a pilot, you just have to memorize the sequence to perfection. Most importantly know, if your machine has any malfunction, what to do and how to do it or you're dead.. and everyone else with you. That is a huge responsibility.
The buttons are not the challenge, the procedures and FAA rules are. Planes are (relatively) easy to learn but the rules of the game are massive and ever changing.
Take for granted? What does that even mean? What should we do?
A lot of those buttons are for emergencies like if an engine fails you can use the power of the other engines to relight it. Stuff like that.
Becoming a pilot is only for the smart. Hats off!

I flew on a private jet a while ago and the pilot allowed me to just view the cockpit for a while and I was amazed at the amount of instrumentation and controls a pilot helms and the kind of decisions they make in a short span while processing such enormous amounts of data and information is truly commendable. Mad respect for these folks.

yeah now imagine that you're driving, can't see anything, being totally dependent on some dude in front of a screen telling you where to go. Hundreds of lives depending on the perfect running of radar/radio technology 100% of the time so you don't hit a mountain or another plane.

Sabin Islam What do you think they just let anyone be a pilot? The pilots work load is tremendous especially during take off and landing. Even on autopilot they are still working. Pilots have to be extremely intelligent and have to be able to handle multiple tasks at once. Of course, you have Islam in your name so that shows your intelligence level compared to the rest of the world.
I really, really wish that the beginning of my life had been so different for me, I would have been a pilot. I'm 33 now, and have a lot of commitments and I wouldn't want to start late, I'd never trust myself enough at this point to put anyone else's lives in my hands. I've been obsessed with aviation, navigation, planes, meteorology... for as long as I can remember. I cant stop watching these videos and other ones like it. For me, this is the epitome of peacefulness and happiness. Nighttime take off over water and in the rain... takes incredible skill and attention to detail. I have almost respect for pilots and officers. I'm just so glad TH-cam was invented so that I can live vicariously through these videos. Technology is amazing.

It’s strange that when you watch a plane takeoff from the cockpit POV it looks as though it’s going really slow while you watch it from a passengers POV you’re hauling butt down that runway.
No different from looking out of the side windows of a car rather than the windscreen. Smaller field of view means it looks faster.

Its easy..because the velocity which we experience is the relative velocity....Now as for passengers, we mainly see sideways....so that we see the buildings, towers and other aircrafts....hence there are lot of things comming in our vision which are stationary....hence we feel the speed. But for pilot...he sees mainly in front....and the front is clear...with only runway in front. Hence there are very few stationary objects in the vision....hence relative speed experienced by pilot will be less...

He's running over the runway centre-lights with the front gear; bad practice I would say as why subject the avionics to unnecessary high-frequency juddering and jarring and shaking; quite surprising how little mechanical empathy some people have. Or worse - did his ego make him steer straight just to prove that he could...even if the only evidence was the running over of the runway centre-lights. A few feet to either side and there'd have been no juddering at all - surely that would be much better for the long-term fatigue life of all the electrical connections, sensitive avionics and instruments in the cockpit.

Can you imagine what these pilots are feeling during push back and engine start. My stomach would be in knots. I just retired from a 36 year career in aerospace manufacturing. 13 of those years were with the Boeing company. I have machined and assembled literally thousands of parts for the 737,747,and 777. I also spent several years in quality assurance. I have never flown. Let me repeat that I have never flown. I have seen far too much. I guess maybe I would in an emergency and then if it were the only way. Even after all I have seen it is still one of the safest means to travel and I know I shouldn't feel that way but it is just my paranoid self I guess. Pilots are some of the most intellegent people I ever worked with. They are worth every penny they earn. It takes many hours of training and they must be certified on each aircraft they fly.

I woke up 2am during the flight and it hit me that we’re 38,000ft over the ocean… there’s no land under you…just sitting on 2 wings. Thrust lever is not something which need protection at that altitude in fair weather.
F/o cannot just “knock off” a thrust lever on a Boeing. For Boeing even if it moves a little here and there, it will comeback. For Airbus if it moves, it will cause a ECAM and need crew intervention. But nothing significant.
But yes, sometimes we do this as a reflex action though it is not required. 😊

It seems the flight is so much smoother in the cockpit than the rest of the plane. I am a very fearful flyer and don’t fly without an Rx. Wish I had their confidence and calmness. Total respect for pilots.

I used to go to the airport with my father when he was alive. He had such a love for Aviation, though he was not a pilot. He was in WWII and wanted to be in the planes that had the glass "bubble" underneath. I think it was called a bomber. He was a Bombardier on the front line instead. He never liked to talk of this part of his life other than planes planes planes.
If he is here over my shoulder watching this with me, I know he is smiling and has goosebumps just as I do now.

My dad was an aeronautical engineer at Boeing. He also owned a Cessna. My father in law was also retired air force and a manager for the FAA. Flying is in our blood.
They don't get nowhere near the recognition of the job they do for us passengers. They are amazing!

That’s like saying that a new species is created everytime a bomb is exploded and if you say the explosion is not big enough, I’m sure if we exploded the sun it would not create a creature or a new species of human. It’s like a tourist asking a New Yorker , “who designed the Empire State Building?” And the native tells the tourist “ no one, it was created by an explosion and it suddenly appeared” the tourist might as well think the native is a junkie.

I have always wanted to be in the cockpit during takeoff and landing....I see all those screens, buttons and everything..I know that's something I will never do, but I love flying!

Fabulous! I spent 20 yrs in the jumpseat going round the world with my husband who flew this aircraft. SO exciting to effectively be back on the flight deck with those familiar sounds. Just love it!
Its actually very cosy to fly. Best experience is Norway, polite and calm manners makes you relax even more.

Couldn't agree more. Yes there's lots of beautiful engine sounds out there, the bassy growl of a V8 idling, the scream of a V12 F1 engine at full throttle. But the sound of those big old jet airliner engines at 'throttle up', I think it even beats rock 'n' roll !
I always let out a big hell yea when I hear that as a passenger. Don't really care what people beside me think.

As many times I’ve traveled, when I hear those engines ramp up for take off. Goosebumps!!! Then the feeling when landing gear lifts off the runway. Smiles. The experience of flying to my destination, sometimes, is the most enjoyable part of my travels.
Miss this view. Growing up my Dad was a CX 747 Captain and as a kid (especially pre 9/11) it was completely normal to be allowed to sit in the cockpit for take off and landing. I got to jumpseat as a boy into Kai Tak dozens of times! Never realised at the time how special that was.
I don't care what people say about the A380 and how great it is. The 747 is the best plane that will ever exist. What an icon she is.
The A380 is an overly expensive eyesore. Not too mention 40 years to late, the A380 was a bust from the start, AirBus hasn't even gotten anywhere near breaking even on it and never will.
Love the 747 and 777 but ive never got to fly on either haha but i will say the oldschool 737s have always got me home safe probably 30 flights
Queen of the skies! The 747 will be around a long time due to being able to load through the nose, for cargo. The 380 with that middle deck (which can't be removed) ruins it for cargo.

He's running over the runway centre-lights with the front gear; bad practice I would say as why subject the avionics to unnecessary high-frequency juddering and jarring and shaking; quite surprising how little mechanical empathy some people have. Or worse - did his ego make him steer straight just to prove that he could...even if the only evidence was the running over of the runway centre-lights. A few feet to either side and there'd have been no juddering at all - surely that would be much better for the long-term fatigue life of all the electrical connections, sensitive avionics and instruments in the cockpit.
@Austrian279 Hi there - most runways as 50m wide - 2 foot to one side is as good as in the centre as it makes no difference. Ego is dangerous in the cockpit as it suggests reduced self-criticism and that prevents continual learning, so, again in the long run could become dangerous.
@Austrian279 He was being filmed and I don't think any pilot would deliberately shake-up his instruments by running over the centrelights for no other benefit. Perhaps I'm thinking about it too much but my chief flying instructor once said ( when doing a pre-flight, where you had to check the strength of things )..he said...no, don't touch that x,y,z ( thing ) to see if it is securely fastened.....because if every pilot does that every walk-round then eventually it won't (be)... so his point was - don't induce mechanical stress that you don't really need to. Unlike for example a heavy steel ship built for the ocean...an aircraft is equisitely engineered to be 'just' strong enough ( with safety-factors, of course, but fundamentally )..so it has to be treated with a lot more care and carefulness...treated like fine china, when you have the chance.... Sooner or later something will break / shake-loose, fall-off, stop working...and why bring that date forward...that was my sort of point; but thankyou for your replies also and best wishes :-)

+K Butler commercial airliners always had computers (ever since they were put in application), of the old generation type, which were in fact more risky! ...
Computers nowdays are much more advanced, even in error detecting and correcting processes, and usually (if I am not mistaken) those planes have at least two extra back-up systems ... etc.
