    Sunday 10/212023-I was a little down due to the state of our world today, so I revisited my two old friends here enroute to Quito. Hello old friends if you happen to see this. Although you didn't know it, I enjoyed travelling along with you on the breathtaking flight several times. It, and your subsequent departure are two of my favorite virtual adventures. Thank you again and of course many thanks to the content poster! I hope all is well with y'all!🙂

      interesting to hear your perspective. I've often wondered how veteran pilots felt when glass cockpits became commonplace, particularly after hearing what John Hutchinson (Concorde Pilot) had to say about glass cockpits, something like "none of that poncy glass cockpit rubbish".

Enjoyable learning about the procedures & seeing the cockpit view (so much better than passenger view) that we never get to see any more (I remember years ago being allowed in the cockpit for the landing at NCL). This is a very well-put together video with a really interesting location.

    Nice video! Superbly executed and narrated with great CRM by this crew. I used to fly into the old Quito airport a lot and I would agree with this captain, it takes your full attention. We almost always did it at night. Right before they closed the old airport they actually got an RNAV RNP that "curved" you in an "S" shape while you descended towards the south on glideslope towards the south. Never got to do the new approach other than the sim, and when the sim guy took the weather away it was shocking to see how close to those mountains we were as we snaked through them, and then landed south. The new airport is very nice in every respect, and fantastically smooth runway surface, but the new airport sits in an area that is prone to fog.
    Thanks again for a great video!

      Those pilots don't have that kind of difficulties in other parts of the world, or even other parts of the US. Perhaps the problem also has something to do with JFK's smug controllers and their failure to adopt standard phraseology.

      Competent English? They speak english absolutely perfect albeit with a German accent. A person from Newcastle speaks English with a Newcastle accent etc. To do this job you have to bilingual at least and preferably equally fluent in two languages. English, German and Spanish are a must for a long haul pilot. At least for one of the pilots.

      Sadly my flying instructor was killed back in the 80s by a misunderstanding at a French airport where the tower was speaking a mixture of French and English. I think that and other accidents back then made the international law change so all exterior traffic language for flight was kept to English.

I was on pins and needles, remembering how as a teenager I was terrified and thinking - how in the world are we going to land in such a heavily populated crazy valley. I am from Guayaquil, Ecuador but remember traveling with my father to Quito and Cuenca by commercial flight. I took my wife to Ecuador for the first time in 2013 and she was in awe of the airports in the Highlands there. It takes nerves of steel just to be a passenger... I hope someone has video of landing at San. Cristobal, Galapagos - another harrowing experience.

      I too found it interesting that they used English for flying-related banter.

    • @alrgaines
      @alrgaines 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JohnnyWishbone85 well... back about 12 years ago or so, the Aviation industry suggested the Pilots and ATC should know some basic English and also take any english proficiency text as well considering majority of the Air Industry began here In the U.S. to begin with.
      Clear communication between pilots and air traffic controllers is absolutely necessary for safety. What happens when a flight crew flies to a country that speaks a different language? Just imagine: an Air China flight crew that speaks Mandarin arrives in Paris and must converse with French controllers. In order to communicate effectively, flight crews and controllers must share a common language.
      Then about 10 years ICAO decided that all pilots and ATC SHOULD BE ABLE TO NOT ONLY SPEAK ENGLISH... BUT WRITE IT AND UNDERSTAND IT TOO. Sometime you'll hear over the Frequencies ATC & PILOTS speaking in a different language however, that's only because they flight crew indicated that upon first check in.
      Example would be "Good Morning...Hello...Good evening, Newark Center this is Catus 2347 Heavy on 121 (decimal) 22 we're now making our initial decent, leaving flight level 2-2 (TOO-TOO thousand) down to FL 2-0 (Too ZE-ROW thousand) (maintaining head 2-7-0 degrees weather (c) Charlie, awaiting vectors for an ILS Approach." Basically their telling the tower they speak English and transmitting in frequency 121.22 and leaving their previous flight level of 22,000 feet and their current heading and their latest weather info was C they're waiting for their next set of instructions... Be it a heading change, altitude, speed, nearby traffic ECT. When ATC hears this, especially the weather report, if the weather has changed since their focus is landing, ATC will provide them with new weather and runaway closure, traffic, vectors (This is just an example. I can go on forever. Lol.)
      But take any Spanish speaking country. Similar scenario as above. But it's Mexico/Spain/Puerto Rico/Dominican Republic ECT and this flight crew may call in like this.... (Buenos Dias, Tardes, Noche....), ATC now knows that they prefer Spanish. Not because they don't know English but more they're more comfortable.

Love the pilots and you can not only hear the captain tell us that he enjoys the fly in but you can see he's getting a kick out of it, though he pulled a bit of a face because the landing was, how shall I say - robust? Good stuff.

The old Quito airport was one of the most dangerous airports in the world for landing a plane. You had to look out for the volcanos, very tall Andes Mountains and the highrise buildings, as the old airport was in the very center of town. With all the captain's detailing, inexperienced or non-pilots watching this video may miss the BIG difference in high altitude approaches - increased speed. Although the pilots are flying at their normal INDICATED approach speed (say, 130 knots), their TRUE airspeed increases 2% per thousand feet of altitude, i.e. 155 knots. You can clearly see this in the video - all the aircraft come screaming across the threshold! A 3 degree glideslope requires an excessively high rate of descent, and then the runway. Sh!t happens - fast (-:
    Great job, guys!

    That was amazing!! Thanks for sharing this. A question... We all know the MD-11 has a tendency to float and bounce on landing. Is that tendency actually less at this airport due to the very high runway?

    • @JCxx44
      @JCxx44 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Indeed, she's a very temperamental aircraft :)

    • @sobelou
      @sobelou 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It shouldn't be... it should be the contrary, as in order to keep the proper IAS your ground-speed is higher thanks to the high elevation. Looks like many pilots have gotten the hang of the MD11 and using power instead of pitch control to arrest descent just before touchdown becomes second nature to them. And this crew gives an excellent impression of confidence and professionalism

    • @747-pilot
      @747-pilot 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes, the MD-11 is a very unforgiving aircraft, not only because of the way it responds to flight inputs due to its unique aerodynamics, but also because its center of gravity is much further back than most aircraft. One of the things that make it challenging to land is the small tailplane (smaller than its predecessor the DC-10, done for efficiency reasons). Pilots responding incorrectly during the flare (made worse if there is wind shear) is what gives you the "float and bounce".
      So, I would imagine that these shortcomings (especially that small horizontal stabilizer) would actually exacerbate the situation, making it EVEN MORE challenging to land at an altitude such as this. Also keep in mind that a much higher stall speed at this altitude will require a much higher approach speed as well, making controllability that much more difficult. So, yes, it definitely makes an already difficult-to-land airplane even tougher!

    • @sobelou
      @sobelou 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Don't agree on much... First, relative to their size, the COG on the DC-10 is farther back than on the MD-11. Why? because the two equal sized fuselage plugs on the MD-11 add, in relative terms, more to the rear section than to the front section . Secondly, the tailplanes are smaller for two reasons: One, see above, more aft and less front fuselage relative its older sister displaces COG to the front. Two, they have fuel tanks, which diminishes the need for stabilizer trimming authority by adding weight. We might even add the enhanced avionics that make for more precise autopilot pitch control. Third, the stall speed doesn't increase with altitude, what increases is the groundspeed that you need in order to maintain the correct reference IAS. In other words, if at sea level, calm wind and standard pressure your IAS is 145 kts, your groundspeed will be the same. At 9300 ft., your IAS of 145 kts will be achieved at about 170 kts. groundspeed. Finally, the smaller tailplane is efficient enough, as is proven by the tailstrike incidents caused by pilots who perhaps used to the DC-10 and contradicting the manual, used elevator control instead of engine power to arrest descent during the flare.
      Do I agree on something? Yes, the MD-11 is a demanding (unforgiving is a bit too much for my taste) aircraft and flight crews need to be present and aware. Comparing it to the DC-10 is like comparing a nervy stallion to a placid mare. But you can have great rides on both horses, and this crew, calm, competent and secure, shows how to land a loaded MD-11 9300 ft. up in the sky without a blip. Kudos to them.

    La Paz is neither the Capital of Bolivia, nor does it have a major airport. That would be 'El Alto', a city in its own right. I landed - and started - in Quito (a local name meaning The Face of God) at least 50 times. Never had any problems, Braniff, Lufthansa, Avianca, Lacsa, Taca... Pilots of excelence, at Taca as well Lady Pilots. I remember a hairy landing in Guayaquil, Captain beeing a Lady, announcing that we would have severe trouble making it to the ground because of bad weather. She approached two times, two times choose for a go around and then set us safely on the runway. That was Tame (Transportes Aéreos Militares del Ecuador). Thank you again, M'am, for that trip.
